5 out of 5 stars A good value.......2007-05-17

I wasn't expecting to have 4 discs for this price, and the music is a quality selection of film music, giving a good scope of the genre, and a very listenable transfer.

4 out of 5 stars The Sound Track Since Bernard Hermann.......2006-07-25

This collection is bound to capture your heart and evoke a tin ear on successive tracks. I found much to like and some duds - easy to skip over.
Very good value.

For the price, this CD is a great bargain. The musical selections, as you might expect, are mixed in quality ranging from extraordinary to so so, the balance being worthwhile and interesting. Sonically the CD is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Ah, the early nineties.......2006-01-21

Heh. Anyway, if you can get past that, the music on this album is pretty good, especially Keep The Candle Burning and That's The Way It's Meant To Be. Again: Highly Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Sing your songs, Point of Grace!.......2005-04-14

It's a fact: Some CDs simply never get old. Count Point of Grace's LIFE, LOVE & OTHER MYSTERIES among these classics.

After nearly 10 years, Point of Grace's third album still remains their best and most timeless creation. Here, the girls have created a diverse sound that explores pop, rock, gospel, soul, and tender ballads.

The album's title track opens with a simple, beautifully-harmonized reminder of God's omnipotence. The soulful, gospel-tinged "Keep the Candle Burning" reminds listeners to remain faithful during times of hardship. Catchy "That's the Way It's Meant to Be" affirms the awesomeness of God's plan.

Also well-harmonized, "Gone Are the Dark Days" and "You Are the Answer" are a powerful, soaring pair of songs that rejoice in God's redemptive powers.

Point of Grace also manages to create gentle, moving ballads. "Jesus Doesn't Care" is a reminder that forgiveness is always available to humanity. "God Forbid" exalts God's power and urges His children to fear and respect Him. Point of Grace pays tribute to Jesus's faithful disciples in "Any Road, Any Cost." The album's final track, "Circle of Friends," celebrates the day when friends can meet in Heaven.

Consider LIFE, LOVE & OTHER MYSTERIES a worthwhile investment. After all, how many CDs never lose their novelty after 10 years in a CD player?

5 out of 5 stars "YOU ARE THE ANSWER AND THE MEANING OF LIFE".......2004-04-19

Point of Grace has been a staple in Christian music since their debut in 1993 and with faith hope and the love of God they continue to be one of the most powerful Christian bands of all time and still continues to be a favorite among young and old alike. On their third cd life love and other mysteries Point of Grace shows their affection and love of God through their souls out to their fans. The cd's rock fused title track {which recieved limited airplay on christian stations} tells us that not only if you believe in yourself and no other person God will be your friend and help you in times of need. Then comes the powerful Keep the candle burning which is a beautiful ballad about even though some goals are hard to achieve you have to believe with a steady heart. Be sure to listen for the aweome guitar solo. The album's third single You are the answer {The first song i liked from life love and other mysteries} is a Clay Aikenish type song with inspirational lyics and a message that tells us that if we can believe in anything God will be the answer to all our questions {You are the answer is the song where the title of my review is from}. In addition to more great songs not to mention a GREAT cover of Earth wind and fire's sing a song there is also a advertisement for Mercy Ministries a charity that provides homes and money for poor children and family in a space of their own for free and also a order form to order Point Of Grace merchandise. The follow up cd Steady On is very good but it doesn't compare to life love and other mysteries.(...)

5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD!.......2004-01-14

A former girlfriend gave me this CD (without it's case or artwork) 2 years ago. I put it in my CD player & it was great! The group really swings on every song. In other words there's not a bad song on the whole CD. In fact I liked it so much I bought every CD the group has made since including this one as I wanted the CD artwork.

Yep, this CD is a definite winner. I always play it all the way through. You want a group that praises the Lord? Then get this one. You won't go wrong.

5 out of 5 stars Life, Love and Other Mysteries.......2003-09-30

I love this album. They have beautiful voices. My favorite songs are "That's the way it's meant to be", "Any road, any cost" and "Life, love, and other mysteries." They really have a genius for creating songs that touch you where you are! Oh, and the song "God forbid" was especially beautiful. There were only one or two songs I was disappointed with, "Gone are the dark days" and "Sing a song".
In short, I recommend this album to anyone who likes beautiful harmonies and sometimes fun, sometimes very emotional songs.

On their second album, the Mysteries of Life accomplish a remarkable feat: every song sounds instantly familiar and immediately hummable. It's almost as if Jake Smith were channeling some ancient pop tunes from the collective unconscious, and what makes the whole thing doubly special is that, even after repeated listens, the songs still sound fresh. Though individual songs are a little less memorable than on the band's debut, Keep a Secret, there are still plenty of winners here: the earnest pleading of "Kiss Me Goodnight," the sweetly rendered heartache of "Wish You Well," the revenge-minded "Your Face Betrays You," even the haunting, Howard Jones-ish ballad "That's How Strong My Love Is." It's not just the melodies that make the Mysteries of Life one of the best pure pop bands around--it's their ability to convey a full spectrum of emotion while keeping your head nodding. --Randy Silver

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not Quite a "Secret".......2002-11-28

Indiana-based The Mysteries of Life followed up their amazing Vulgar Boatmen-esque debut album "Keep a Secret" with a sophomore effort, "Come Clean," which is not quite a strong but still has some very fine moments. The Mysteries are a pure guitar pop rockers unfortunately laboring in a era dominated by grunge, boy bands and shock rappers. Nevertheless, few artists are able to produce songwriting hooks so effectively.

The albums high point is "Kiss Me Goodnight," which is a dead ringer for The Vulgar Boatmen. Other standouts include "Let it Slip," "Year Ago Today," and "Tell Me." Though there are not as many standouts as on the debut album, there are no outright clunkers either.

Overall, a strong sophomore effert from an overlooked band that deserves a much wider audience.

4 out of 5 stars Come Clean/Mysteries of Lide.......2001-06-10

This CD immediately gets your attention! Their unmistakable melodramatic sound is such a fresh change. The songs are well thought out and nicely done. I especially like "Your face betrays you" as it easily relates to everyone that has been there/felt that. Come Clean, the opening and title track is a great opener. This is the type of CD that you would want to put on, open the windows and just take in that lazy sunny weekend. You won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Really a mystery why these guys are not better know..........2000-08-22

I really like this record. Simple yet completely engaging. Fans of Silos, Vulgar Boatmen, mellow Marshall Crenshaw, and lovers of "pure pop" music will appreciate this one, which grows more engaging with every listen. Hope they're still together...

5 out of 5 stars the greatest thing in American music you've never heard of.........1999-04-04

Once in a great while you hear a collection of songs with which you instantly identify. They make your life a little richer; they become the soundtrack to your conscious hours. You play this collection of songs for everyone you love, because you care for them and you want them to know this wonderful secret. "come clean" is such a thing. i am concerned that i can't find the superlatives to convey its simple wondrousness. the mysteries of life have given me a gift and i'm damn grateful to them

5 out of 5 stars Why on Earth arn't they famous?.......1999-03-04

Actually I know why. They're music isn't a fast as some would like it. Even so, Downhill, Tell Me, Let It Slip and Fingerprint are incredibly good. All the songs grow on you after repeated listenings. It is only a matter of time before they break it big.

5 out of 5 stars Seductive Sensual Music .......2005-04-23

This CD contains seductive ambient music, created by the rhythmic beat of either a pony drum, congas, talking drum or tom toms, which captures the conscious and unconscious mind weaving a spell of contentment and deep primal awareness in the listener. Additional instruments in each track add subliminal satisfaction to capture the listener's every emotion and transform the energy into deep wells of universal potential.

"Elusinian Blue" composed by Jai Uttal starts with an ancient primival tom tom beat which then has the ethereal Indian sitar-like or santur plucked instrument added ... creating a mysterious Asian aura to which male vocals add a distant powerful instinctual magnetic appeal. "Labyrinth" is a soothing combination of balaphone (an African hammered dulcimer-like instrument), pony drum, and occasional harp ... where the melody meanders into a delightful path of extraordinairily natural pleasure. The music flows like a babbling brook. It delights the senses like watching a natural waterfall ... All of the music on this CD creates a milieu of primival energy and sound that is highly seductive and hypnotic. The magnificent array of instruments combine to create a connection to nature's source of energy. The listener remains surrounded by a sense of contentment long after the CD finishes playing.

4 out of 5 stars The sacred drums of trance.......2003-03-09

_Luna_ is an album of music by a small instrumental troupe. Drums are the most prominent instruments; there are also winds, a bit of bass, an occasional human voice, and some synthesizer. When I first heard the album, I felt the tracks were too repetitive. But upon further listening, I realized _Luna_'s repetitive rhythms had their own charm. This is a CD to listen to as you meditate or do some sort of ritual. It makes me want to dance, and to get out my own drums and play along. It also makes good background music when I want something pleasant and ambient that won't distract me the way music with lyrics can.

My favorite tracks are "Persephone's Song" (pretty and lyrical with lots of winds), "Seducing Hades" (very strong sexy beat, bass guitar, and human voices making moaning sorts of sounds toward the end of the song), and "Labyrinth" (trancelike, with a marimba part that evokes the unrolling of Ariadne's famous thread). "Luna" is the only song I'm not particularly fond of, and that's just because the bouncy synthesizer noise repeated several times is the exact same noise my old Nintendo made whenever Mario jumped. A little distracting.

4 out of 5 stars If you love drums..........2002-07-31

I ran into this CD on accident through a friend, and immediately fell in love with it! The drums are awesome, peaceful and full of power. The entire cd is good to listen to for meditation or long drives, although some tracks are a little bit cheesy. I look forward to buying Gabrielle Roth's other works soon. As you can see, they are all on my wish list. :)

5 out of 5 stars This is my favorite!.......2001-09-18

There are some CDs about the Moon, but this is the one that manifests her. Nice to celebrate Nights.

4 out of 5 stars Voodoo Ambience.......1998-05-19

Very organic, whooshing, whirling sounds never quite touch the quiet swamp rhythms. This music is a dance.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR STUDY OF LIVING GREGORIAN CHANT.......2007-02-27

Although Gregorian Chant is very carefully tied to particular times and seasons, and therefore recordings of the living chant always feels odd out of season and captured and pinned on display, like fascinating irridescent butterfly wings on cotton under glass, please play this disk and live and breathe a little easier, in peace and in rhythm and in unity.

Gracefully directed by Dr. Marier, this recording wonderfully captures the greatest living Gregorian choir fully active in the United States of America, at the Abbey of Regina Laudis, which daily and nightly maintains the true cycle of Gregorian chant, completely, in the living of the Rule of Saint Benedict with all of the liturgical hours fully chanted as ever through the centuries, per saeculum saeculi. The best way, then, to experience in union this true and living and breathing chant is to spend as much time as possible on retreat at the Abbey in still rural Bethlehem, Connecticut. Lacking that ability, live with this disk, and let it play day and night until it becomes a part of your bones and you sing with it without yet quite knowing it.

I strongly recommend this disk for anyone who fully and deeply wants to know Gregorian Chant, as chanted by a contemplative community of devoted and committed women in America. Hear also their recording, also with Mr. Marier, of the Festal Celebrations of the Virgin Martyrs and Our Lady of Sorrows, which includes the founding Abbess Mother Benedict's blessing.

Please note in particular the most important Marian hymns are included on this disk, for anyone seriously interested in learning the most important Gregorian Marian tones. FOr instance you find here a solemn version of the Magnificat, the greatest hymn of Mary directly from the Gospel of Saint Luke, which is chanted every day at Vespers without exception by any monastic choir worthy of the name. We also may find here Regina coeli and the wonderful seasonal hymn, Salve Regina. Please look closely at the play list and you find nearly every traditional Marian hymn you can recall. Within this collection are scriptural meditations beautifully read by Mother Dolores Hart, an actress who was on her way to becoming the next Grace Kelly (who had then abdicated her throne to take on the throne of Monaco) but entered Regina Laudis monastery instead, filling its readings with the depths of her trained and restrained and profoundly emotional voicings. We are very fortunate she is so well recorded here, and regret she never made at the height of her powers an audiobook of the entire Holy Bible, or at least the Psalms, or Gospels . . .

In other words, what more can you possibly ask for?

Please note the photograph on this product, the Mysteries in the Life of Jesus, Son of Mary, is of the new Abbess, Mother David, who is currently directing the choir in a fresh recording of the hymns of Christmas, a new recording which may be available come Christmas of this year. In the mystery of Bethlehem, that will be well worth adding to your music library, for anyone serious about studying the true Gregorian chant as it is lived and breathed daily by this now too rare and precious choir.

Please also see the soon-to-be-released biography of Mother Benedict from Ignatious Press. Let us learn to cherish our American saints and study from them how to live in peace and loving Catholic community in this quadrant of the hemisphere.

Please see all of the Abbey's rare recordings at their website.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent recording of Gregorian Chants.......2002-04-09

I bought this recording a few weeks ago and it has quickly become a favourite. While Gregorian Chant has become popular, especially with the recordings of Santo Domingo de Silos, it is easy to lose sight of the fact that Gregorian Chant is sung prayer. In hearing the nuns of the Abbey of Regina Laudis sing, you understand that this is something that they experience each day. It is a beautiful recording and is accompanied by beautiful meditations on the life of Jesus read by Mother Dolores Hart, O.S.B.

The first album from an engaging pop group that features the songs of Jake Smith and his wife, Freda Love (ex-Blake Babies, Antenna). Smith's vocals tend towards bright and hopeful, and he almost always sounds like he's experiencing love for the first time--the anticipation of a visit on "Kira's Coming Over," the first-date nervousness of "Hesitate." The instrumentation is just as winning, with Freda Love's Moe Tucker-esque drums keeping the pace behind bass, cello and Smith's optimistic guitar. One of the few groups who can manage an uncynical cover of the Talking Heads' "Naive Melody," which they do on their Focus on the Background EP. --Randy Silver

5 out of 5 stars Pure Pop Nirvana.......2003-09-28

I was at a CD store that was going out of business and I saw a copy of Keep a Secret priced much lower than it's usual retail price. Although I had purchased the record when it came out I bought the copy I saw in the store because if I didn't I knew that I would not be able to find the first copy I had bought. I played the cd in my car player and remembered why I loved this record as much as I did. Hours later I get home and checked my
email and recieved a message from someone who is a friend of Geraldine Hass, who was the MoL's cello player. The very day that I bought Keep a Secret someone went to www.chaoticlifestyles.com and saw that I am a guitarist/bassist who was inspired to study the cello after listening to Keep a Secret. Weird huh?

Buy the record - you'll love it.

4 out of 5 stars solid set.......2002-12-02

"Keep a Secret" doesn't have definitive tracks like "Fingerprint" or "Downhill" on "Come Clean," but it's quite pleasing throughout, and some of the songs only lack a little stronger lyrics to elevate them from "catchy" to "great" - especially "Kira's Coming Over" and "I Guess I'm in Luck." "Hesitate," "Into the Light," and "Shaking" are good fun, and there's plenty more. Four stars because the album doesn't quite reach the standard of "Come Clean," but of course this is some of the best music that's come out of the decade.

5 out of 5 stars Wish I Could Give It More Than 5 Stars.......2001-11-16

This is one of those few albums that defies all efforts to describe in mere words how wonderful it is. Drummer Freda Love started out in the Blake Babies, them moved on to Antenna, where she first hooked up with Jake Smith, whom she ended up marrying. Together Love and Smith formed The Mysteries Of Life (herafter "MOL"). This band definately outshines any of their previous bands' efforts, although the Antenna releases are also quite wonderful. They don't rock as hard as Antenna, but Jake Smith is a more appealing singer than Antenna's John Strohm, and the music is catchier, more Beatles-ish. In addition to Love and Smith the band features two other women, Tina Barbieri on bass and Geraldine Haas on cello. Haas is MOL's secret weapon - the interplay between her cello and Smith's raw, garage-rock guitar playing is magic. Together they evoke a wide range of feelings, from melancholy to pure, unabashed joy! This is one of the best albums of the 90's, or any other decade for that matter.

5 out of 5 stars Going Through Withdrawl.......2001-10-24

I am fron Indianapolis and have had the pleasure of seeing MOL a few times. Last time was at an Art Fair right when their last album was to come out. It never did. I got this album for free through a failed new CD club by one of the big two. This was there thanks. And I thanked them. Going Through the Motions has to be my favorite song. I lost this album and need it bad. It is one of the best albums I have ever had the pleasure of hearing. It's such a shame, that with so much garbage on the airwaves that a great musical couple like Jake and Freda (and their friends in IL) cannot find a real home on the radio. If you can get this - get it. It will be one of those albums you'll own and just have a smug satisfaction knowing that you own it. Out of the thousands of CDs that I own, this curious little one just continues to stand out.

5 out of 5 stars catchy indie-pop rocks!.......2001-06-11

I got this album many years ago (97?) when I was in Columbia House's CD club. Not quite sure what attracted me to it, but am I glad that I did! The unique sound of integrating a cello into indie-rock just works. Mostly acoustic, the songs are extremely catchy and the album definitely has a relaxing groove.

My favorites tracks: Going through the motions, Feel my way, Into the light, I guess I'm in luck

This is one of those albums you just play over and over, it's great!

It's no mystery why this female foursome is so successful. Heather, Denise, Terry and Shelley pack some potent vocal punch into a 40-minute melange. And their third pop release showcases the Grace girls at their creative best. From the acapella intro of the title cut through their rousing version of Earth, Wind & Fire's classic "Sing a Song" to the acoustic lilt of the closing "Circle Of Friends," the uplifting tone here yields positive, feel-good vibes. Adding spice and variety to the mix are producers Michael Omartian, Phil Naish, Scott Williamson, and Blair Masters and a cast of Nashville's finest studio musicians. --Jerry Chamberlain

4 out of 5 stars Life, Love, and Other Mysteries.......2001-09-17

I have had "Life, Love, and other Mysteries," for several years, but its appeal hasn't yet worn off for me. It's a terrific cd, like all the rest of the group's cds, and is pretty nostalgic for me as well. The harmonies are terrific on this cd, and musically there is variety. My favorite songs on this cd are the title track and "sing a song."

I have enjoyed Sharon West's first CD for many months. The CD has a great selection of songs that enable me to do all my office work while enjoying some great music. When playing the CD, I've been asked about the music as it is a very 'ear catching' selection. If you have a small business and/or home office, this is a great CD to own and enjoy! I look forward to what Sharon may do next.
