being a lover of good music i was surprised to see this cd. i listened to some of the selections and decided this was an excellent piece for my parents. being of japanese descent i am always looking for music from japan to enhance my cultural appreciation. my parents truly love this cd.

I would not rate this the very best James Galway CD but it does contain the best song I have heard him play. Cut #3, Nakasendo (The Old Road) is worth the price of the CD alone. While Hietsuki Bushi (Love Song) and Song of the Deep Forest are also excellent, I never tire of listening to The Old Road. Hiro Fujikake on synthesizers combined with the flute of James Galway makes this a very pleasing collection of music.

I don't DISLIKE this cd, but really it is a poor interpretation of Japanese flute music. It sounds more like an uninspired Enya clone than traditional Japanese music. No matter how many times I listened to it, it never could really interest me enough to be more of my life than another cd in my scrapped CD's pile.

Yes, a real country singer.......2007-01-04

I have always loved Chris Ledoux for singing about what country music should be, but I have found another favorite in Royal Wade Kimes. He has a real country sound and the subject of his songs is similar to that of Marty Robbins. I have even corresponded with Mr. Kimes via email; how many of your favorite artists have you had any contact with? Seems like a great guy!

Royal Wade Kimes is a real country singer, easily surpassing all the fluff on country radio. He sings old-fashioned, true-blue country music, and his voice is amazing and unique. If there were any justice in the music business, he'd be a star.

Do You Remember Bay City Rollers?.......2004-11-12

when BAY CITY ROLLERS sung "The Way I Feel Tonight" in 1977 was felt too mellow and sweet even for teens.(I was 16 in 1977).
but MIGHTY ECHOES version of this is simply heartful and beautiful for over 40 man like me.
and another great Acapella version of "Morce Code Of Love"(originally recorded by CAPRIS)is the best tracks I think,but all songs has becoming more wonderful by their soulful voices.very highly recomanded.

Brilliant Singing!.......2002-01-04

Sumi Jo displays again her remarkable voice on this album dedicated to Johann Strauss. These arias and vocal arrangements are ideal for Jo's voice, giving her the opportunity to display her technical mastery in singing scales, stacatto and brilliant high notes. Of the vocal selections, there are two who are particularily stunning: "Spiel'ich die Unschuld vom Lande" from DIE FLEDERMAUS (with great vocal acting, pinpoint stacatto singing and two dazzling high Ds)and "Fruhlingsstimmen Op. 410" (with effortless vocal display and charm). The reason I give four stars is because of the excessive number of orchestral selections. Yes, the Wiener Volksoper Orchestra conducted by Rudolf Bibl is in excellent form, but the CD is mostly advertized as a vocal recital. Instead of having the FLEDERMAUS overture, it would have been great to have Sumi Jo singing instead the other soprano arias from the same work, Adele's "Mein Herr Marquis" and Roslinda's Czardas. Nonetheless, this is still a brilliant CD of Johann Strauss at its most sparkling.

Sumi Jo gives an absolutely fabulous performance on this CD. The CD overall is odd because singers now-a-days don't release solo recordings of just Johann Strauss' vocal music. They might include a few selected songs, but not a whole album like here. I guess this makes the CD all the more desireable. The "Weiner Blut" is particularly good. I can't say that I've heard any vocal renditions of this song...so I was thrilled and surprised to hear Sumi sing it. She adds character to the piece "Mir ist auf einmal so eigen zumute", she provides a very effective interpretation.

An Extraordinary User-Friendly Multimedia Dvorák Biography.......2004-04-28

I have followed with interest the series of CDs explaining popular operas by Jeremy Siepmann, an American musicologist long resident in Britain. Each of those is a single CD with a spoken text interspersed with longish excerpts from the opera in question. This 4-CD set, though, is something else again. It is a combination of music/audio CDs with superimposed CD-ROM material (on the same discs). One plays the audio portion on your regular stereo equipment. When put in your PC or Mac CD drive, the CD-ROM portion of the discs brings up an extensive set of hyperlinked text materials as well as links to the CDs from which the musical examples are taken (all from the Naxos music recordings library, of course). Also included in the CD-ROM material is the full text of Siepmann's detailed biography of Dvorák. There is also a thick booklet that includes cast lists (various actors playing various important people in Dvorák's life), an extensive essay about the sociopolitical and cultural conditions extant during Dvorák's life, an longish essay about his major works and their significance, a graded listening plan, an article outlining recommended reading, biographical snippets about each of the important people in Dvorák's life, a chronological calendar of Dvorák's life, and an extensive glossary of musical and other pertinent terms.

Siepmann's four-and-a-half-hour exploration of Dvorák's life and works is in his wonted polished, often witty, prose. It is read gracefully by Siepmann himself. Dvorák is played by the suave-voiced British actor, Sean Barrett. The musical examples are extensive, often including complete movements, arias, etc., and are placed expertly within the flow of the text. Production values for this budget-priced set are quite high.

I will admit that I had a particular interest in this production as I grew up in a rural Oklahoma town settled by Bohemians (Czechs) and came to love some of Dvorák's music before even that of Bach, Mozart and Beethoven. I've already recommended this set to the public schools and town library in my hometown.

I am not quite sure who the intended audience for this set is. Presumably there are those, like me, who are insatiable when it comes to increasing their knowledge of classical music, its composers and their sociocultural milieu. One also imagines that even in these days of decreasing support for music and music appreciation courses in our schools, there are teachers who could make wonderful use of this material for their students. Whoever the audience is, I cannot imagine a listener coming away from this set without a great deal more information and appreciation for the genius of Antonin Dvorák.
