It's difficult to fault Marc Broussard's intentions in releasing this collection of mostly covers as the follow-up to his 2004 breakthrough Carencro. He's intent on showing his roots in the uplifting soul music that he clearly loves. However, it's too early in his nascent career to be going the Rod Stewart route. Broussard's committed, grainy voice works well with these R&B standards and obscurities, even if the arrangements generally stick close to the originals. Yet he can't help but come up short singing timeless classics such as Marvin Gaye's "Inner City Blues," Otis Redding's "I've Been Loving You Too Long," and Al Green's "Love and Happiness." Broussard is more convincing uncovering hidden nuggets such as Bobby Womack's slow dance "Harry Hippie," Rance Allen's gospelized "Let the Music Get Down in Your Soul," and the frisky funk of Stevie Wonder's "You Met Your Match." He also dusts off Blood, Sweat & Tears' "I Love You More than You'll Ever Know," sweating out the tune's inherent soulfulness. Toby Lightman swings into Tammi Terrell's part for a peppy, finger-snapping take on the sweet Gaye/Terrell duet "If I Could Build My Whole World Around You." Not surprisingly, Broussard's sturdy self-penned ballad "Come in from the Cold" pales somewhat in this heady company. It does, however, show his songwriting abilities haven't diminished, even if he apparently needs more time to compose another album's worth of his own material. --Hal Horowitz

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Old School Soul from awesome singer.......2007-07-30

Marc Broussard's got the best voice in blue eyed soul alive right now. He's what Taylor Hicks is only posing for. Marc's Carenco disc is in my top ten discs and I own over 1400 - it's a stellar collection of originals without a bad song on it. That said, this is a disc that really didn't need to be made other than it's always good to keep these classics in the cannon of great american songs and it's nice to hear some lesser known, but solid songs get a second chance. While I love Marc's deep throaty growl and his raspy falsetto, he only matches the originals at best not really adding anything new. Like seeing a really great R&B band in a bar, it takes no effort to love these songs but they fall short of amazing me like his earlier two studio discs did. Worth owning for sure just for his voice but I'm patiently waiting for a new batch of originals.

An added bonus is Toby Lightman on duet and back-up - also one of the best voices of her generation. She's got all the soulful subtlety and nuance that Joss Stone Lacks, but it would have been nice to hear her belt out something better than Tammy Terrell.

5 out of 5 stars Soulful and Timeless.......2007-07-29

Marc Broussard has a soulful voice that matches all of the songs on his latest release "S.O.S.: Save Our Soul". I love listening to these classics being sung by one of the most talented artists of today. His raspy and gritty voice is wonderful as he portrays the struggles and hope in every song he sings. My favorite tracks off the album include "You Met Your Match", "Let the Music Get Down In Your Soul", and "Inner City Blues (Makes Me Wanna Holler)". This album never gets old, and captures my emotions everytime I listen to it. It's a must have for all music lovers!

3 out of 5 stars Yes, Classic Soul Is The Best Music!.......2007-07-29

It's nice to hear this classic music being revived and I know how someone like Marc Broussard feels when he listens to the junk that's passing as "music" today. I feel the same way. Marc has chosen some great songs here and I don't mind that he has stuck close to the originals. Putting a hip/hop spin on these songs would have ruined them.

Only Aretha Franklin, in her heyday, could have taken all of these tunes and made them greater than the originals. This album just makes it more clear that good music (especially soul) is sorely missed in light of what is happening today. Young black "artists" have all but abandoned classic soul for the watered-down dum de dum stuff that's all over the airwaves and it's difficult to tell one record from the next. It doesn't take much talent to sing hip/hop. It appears that people are being taken right off the street and into recording studios...to me, it's that bad.

People like Bettye LaVette are still singing the classic stuff and packing houses all over the world. We don't see European music groups trying to imitate hip/hop, it's classic soul they want to emulate because to their wise ears, it's America's BEST and most valued export.

3 out of 5 stars SOSO---I'll give it a 3.5.......2007-07-11

What drew me to Marc Broussard's "Carencro" was the authenticity of his music. Something happens when he sings his own stuff that takes you there.

I'm not saying he's not good doing this album of all but one cover songs, but he's stuck so close to the original arrangements that it's a waste of his talent.

"Come in from the Cold" is Broussard's only original song on SOS and it's a lovely ballad.

My suggestion is to buy "Carencro" and stick to the original singers of this wonderful soul music.

5 out of 5 stars Marc is the Best!.......2007-07-10

Ever since my sister lent me her CD and I saw Marc Broussard in concert. I have been in love (some would say obsessed.) Carencro is a great album and I have listened to it thousands of times. It seems like we have been waiting for years for his next album and I couldn't be more excited that it is finally here. I am in love again. My favorite track is Harry Hippie and I don't know why, just do. The CDs are great, but if you haven't seen him live, run, run, run to catch him on one of his tour dates. It is an amazing experience that even if you have never heard his music before, you will enjoy!

While his friends were cramming economics, science, and business, Jon McLaughlin was studying piano, and his major-label debut confirms that the Indiana-bred singer/songwriter finished at the top of his class. Three years after his self-titled debut, which was the result of a competition triumph at his music school, McLaughlin meshes his upbringing with his adult-life influences (Billy Joel, Ben Folds) for an ambitiously crafted and extrovertly performed album of piano-led rock and balladry. Essentially a memoir for the twenty-something artist, Indiana wanders through admissions and opinions about love, conviction, close acquaintances, and familial bonds. McLaughlin's classical ties are rarely missing and most evident in songs like the good-natured "Industry," the yearning-for-home title track, and "Amelia's Missing," where he shamefully asks, "I can't find my wallet, so how in the hell am I supposed to find the one that I love?" The latter is the kind of heart-on-the-sleeve, fingers-on-the-ivory sincerity that has garnered McLaughlin a loyal contingent wherever he plays--one that's likely to breed as these 13 songs hit the street. --Scott Holter

Album Description

This Amazon.com exclusive version of Indiana includes a 3-track bonus disc, "B-Sides from Indiana", featuring the songs "Conversations" and "Throwing A Line." The bonus disc is also enhanced with the live performance video for "Industry."

Through its emotional ups and downs, its sweeping, hooky and earnest piano-pop, Indiana finds the 24-year-old, Indiana based singer working through romantic tests, and even finds him candidly discussing the status of his young career. "There are songs about relationships, girls, faith, friends, family, and there are even some songs about the music industry," he says. "It's a debut album. Nobody knows how the album's gonna go, I don't know how my career is gonna go, so some songs are about that--me trying to venture out into the big world, and make it work." It's also an album about taking stock of all that's good and bad in your life. McLaughlin dubbed the album Indiana during a point when he was in California and away from his Midwestern hometown for the first time in his life for an extended period of time -- at a time when he was better able to recognize what's beautiful and easily taken for granted in small town America. In the song's sly stanzas, the title track pays homage to his home state, via a string-laden piano ballad. But the songs on Indiana deal in emotions as prevalent in Timbuktu as they are in the heartland: "After all, we're only human," McLaughlin sings in the chorus of the ultra-catchy jewel "Human."

5 out of 5 stars A Great Discovery.......2007-07-28

One day, as I was flipping through the T.V. channels, I came across Jon McLaughlin performing in Texas. I was so impressed by him that I immediately went and bought his CD from Amazon. He has a really nice voice, plays the piano beautifully, and is very appealing. I am so glad that I discovered his music.

5 out of 5 stars Won't be unknown for long.......2007-07-18

What a fantastic CD!! I heard one amazing song, "Beautiful Disaster", and decided that I had to hear song samples of the rest. After that, I was sold. The CD is a absolute must!

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing and Emotional.......2007-07-16

I thoroughly am enjoying this disc. John is in my eyes very comparable to Gavin DeGraw in that you have an immediate emotional tie to his music. You know that he is truly an artist, and not just someone out there singing a song because he can. I would reccomend this to anyone looking for a new disc to buy.

5 out of 5 stars An Indiana Treasure for sure!.......2007-06-08

Jon McLaughlin is an amazing artist which you will find out very quickly after listening to any of his songs. He has an awesome sound and if you get the chance to see him in concert don't pass it up!

5 out of 5 stars Saw Jon in Concert in Savannah, GA.......2007-06-06

Had'nt heard of him before a couple of nights ago. He opened up for Jonny Lang at the historic Lucas Theatre. He was fantastic. AND after he played he hung out in the lobby posing with fans, signing autographs etc. Just bought Indiana.

Welcome to Ralph's World represents indie-minded musical magician Ralph Covert's leap to the bigs--the bigs, in the kids' game, meaning Disney. Worry not, though, Ralph fans: instead of steering the world-class story spinner behind such all-ages gems as "Kid Astro" and "Old Red No. 7" in a clumsy corporate direction, the label elected to distill 16 of his best and brightest tracks from the six previous Ralph's World discs. Thus we're essentially treated to a greatest-hits package: "Surfin' in My Imagination," "At the Bottom of the Sea," "Sunny Day Rainy Day Anytime Band," and "The Coffee Song" all make the cut, and they're as zippy-joyful-plucky as ever. A few future classics--"We Are Ants" and "What Can You Do with Your Baby Brother"--are left off, but time won't rub the sheen off them; they'll just become something for new fans to eventually "discover." Because this wouldn't be a Disney disc without a bonus, Welcome also packs a multimedia one-two punch: six danceable, throw-your-hands-up videos dot disc two. --Tammy La Gorce

I love this cd- WE ALL DO! I find myself listening even when the kids aren't around!

4 out of 5 stars Ralph's World.......2007-07-23

If your children enjoy Ralph's music, this is a good CD/DVD combo. I gave it 4 stars only because I wish it had a few more songs on it. The music on Ralph's World is very easy for parents to listen to.........does not get annoying like some children's music.

5 out of 5 stars My kids love this CD/DVD!.......2007-07-14

This is a great value because you get the CD plus the bonus DVD. My kids love the songs and dancing to the music. The DVD is one of their favorites. The songs are cute for the kids and definitely more "grown-up friendly" than some other children's performers.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-06-24

Having seen Ralph's World clips on the Disney Channel, I decided to give this cd/dvd a go. As soon as I popped the dvd in, both my children were mesmerized. My one year old stared through the first two songs (she doesn't care for tv usually) then hopped up and started bouncing and dancing. My four year old made me repeat the dvd 4 times! The songs are catchy and fun without being annoying. My husband and I catch ourselves singing the songs even when we aren't listening to them. My only complaint is that I wish the dvd was longer. The cd is nice to listen to at home or in the car, and I can listen to every song unlike many other children's cd's I own. This is a great buy!

2 out of 5 stars nice song-writing, but the voice?..........2007-06-07

Too bad talented song-writers don't always recognize that their voice / singing do not do their songs the best justice. Whenever we play this, someone loses it and turns it off within two songs. It's just that annoying. Too bad, the songs are really good.

Considered to be one of the finest singers in the world, Raul Malo has always crossed cultures and blurred musical boundaries, breaking new ground with his distinctive balance of vintage sound and contemporary attitude. Born in Miami of Cuban parents, Raul is best known as the founder and frontman of Grammy-winning, multi-platinum band the Mavericks. Formed in 1990, the Mavericks were one of the decade's biggest country bands, recording seven albums, including their 1994 breakthrough, What a Crying Shame, and twice being named Top Vocal Group by the Country Music Association.

This is Raul Malo's first solo Christmas album, which features Raul's beautiful and unique interpretations of beloved holiday tunes. Some songs are distinctly stylized, some traditional, others sung with a hint of humor, but all very nostalgic.

The members of Lynyrd Skynyrd played by their own set of rules. Fiercely defensive of their Southern heritage, Ronnie Van Zant and company reflexively lashed out when they thought they'd been slurred. Hence "Sweet Home Alabama," their retort to Neil Young's shame-on-Dixie "Alabama." (Young loved Skynyrd's screed, even though it lambasted him by name.) On the other hand, "Saturday Night Special" took on handguns; it's hard to imagine a contemporary band with a redneck-rock following taking a similar pro-gun-control stand. This two-disc overview presents a band with a broader agenda than one might imagine. Yes, this is state-of-the-'70s electric boogie, but it's three-guitar-strong rock with genuine subject matter. Fans will already have the likes of "Free Bird" (here presented in studio and concert settings) and "I Know a Little," but baubles such as the previously unreleased "Comin' Home" and the rare B-side "Mr. Banker" add to this collection's appeal, as does the lengthy liner essay. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars Metellica vs Skynrd?.......2007-07-22

Why are people writing about Metallica and Skynrd. I bought Kill 'em All on vinyl the year it came out...love it. LA/Bay Area and the South are worlds apart. If you like Skynrd, then this is a great collection. If you don't, why even bother rating the product? Don't be the ignorant fool who says you either like the Beatles or the Stones. Music isn't a mutually exclusive descision. I won't say that someone who rates Appetite for Destruction and Nevermind as the worst albums ever is an idiot, but they are an idiot.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it, Loved it, Loved it !!!!.......2007-01-09

I didn't think I was a Lynyrd Skynyrd fan but after listening to the CD I'm hooked. Free Bird (studio and the live version) was just awesome.

With all the hits it has on it, it is a great CD to have.

5 out of 5 stars One of the BEST!!!.......2006-08-28

This is one of the best Skynyrd cd's out there. If you like Metallica then that explains you ignorance! Then again I'm sure you can't be older than 18. FYI...a true music lover loves ALL music, you're just a little boy who likes music.

4 out of 5 stars A must for those just starting out on Lynyrd Skynyrd.......2006-08-16

This 2-disc compilation of Lynyrd Skynyrd's library of songs is a very good collection of tracks for those just starting out on this most American of rock bands. Though Lynyrd Skynyrd may not have had the virtuoso guitar playing that The Allman Brothers band had (and which band does) or the heavy, southern blues-rock sound of Creedence Clearwater Revival, what they did have was the songwriting of its great frontman Ronnie Van Zant.

Lynyrd Skynyrd took the dueling lead guitar style pioneered by Thin Lizzy and perfected by The Allman Brothers Band's Duane Allman and Dicky Betts, and did them one better by having three lead guitarists in Allen Collins, Ed King and Gary Rossington. This gave Lynyrd Skynyrd a distinct overdriven blues-rock sound that when mixed with true Southern rock style made the band the definitive Southern rock band. This compilation includes their classic track "Sweet Home Alabama" and one of the most played power ballads (Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" being first and foremost) in "Free Bird" (both the album and even longer live concert version). Other tracks I'd like to point out are "The ballad of Curtis Loew", "Comin' Home", and "Simple Man".

This collection really doesn't have a bad track to it. It's a very good starting off point for anyone just starting to listen to this great Southern Rock band. Those needing to listen to the bands other songs would then be free to check out their full albums.

I'm curious about the decision to place the "explicit lyrics" designation on this product. What's the rationale?

5 out of 5 stars Really Magical in effects.......2005-02-21

I have used this CD in a huasca ceremony here in Brazil. I must say that the latinamerican shamanism of this CD is really authentic. The magical effects (in the light of huasca) were very strong, so much as the alive songs that we call "chamadas" ("callings") we use to conduct in the session. Absolutely amazing!

    5 out of 5 stars mythical wonderment.......2003-05-31

Wondrous, mythical harmonies from the audible equivalent of Venosa's magical art.

Will take you places in your dreams...

4 out of 5 stars True sound of the jungle.......2003-01-29

Icaros are songs that have been given to an apprentice shaman by the spirit of the plant or animal that is the focus of his/her attention and journey. The Icaros on this CD are very well done, and highly recommended for anyone interested in researching traditional use of Yage in a native context. The singers voices ring with the truth and innocence of children, reminding us of who we really are. note: the lyrics are by no means explicit, quite the opposite as they cleanse the enviornment in preparation for sacred work. I found myself singing along, and still hum the very catchy icaros long after hearing them.

    Album Description

I love the tradition of live releases. To me, it's a document of a time

and place. Songs always morph a bit when you take them on the road and

every musician brings her/his own magic to the mix. That's what inspired

this little release of Amy Ray and the Volunteers.

    We recorded a show in

Knoxville, from top to bottom with a 4 tracks of computer magic. We

would have had more tracks, but the equipment failed us at the last

minute. For this reason, it's really "live"-no fixes and barely any

separation. We skipped a few songs that are best left in the ether

sphere and some babble that was probably better left unsaid. Other than

that, what you hear is what we played -songs from both solo

    releases-Stag and Prom.

It was the last show of the Rocktober 2005 tour

and slimly attended. The energy was in the intimacy of the crowd and the

fact that we knew we wouldn't get to rock again for a while. After the

show, we loaded the gear into the trailer and without much fanfare,

celebrated at an all night Pita joint. There's nothing less glamorous

than a college town that shuts down early. The Volunteers went on their

way. The drummer Will Lochamy went back to Alabama, where he splits his

time between music and managing a bar. Les Nuby, the guitar man, dropped

by his home in Alabama, long enough to hang with the gang and then

headed out to L.A. to do session work, playing drums. Tara Jane O'Neil

went back to her life as a roving songwriter, singer, rocker, and visual

artist. Our fearless tour manager Carla landed an impressive job working

with the family pop/rock band, Laughing Pizza. I am living the high life

as an Indigo Girl and writing for the next Aray solo record. Written by Amy Ray

Amy rocks once again, as usual sounds as good live as in studio - a must have for any fan.

4 out of 5 stars Amy Ray out on her own.......2007-06-27

While Ms Amy Ray is one half of the dynamic duo: The Indigo Girls do not expect an Indigo girls type recording. Ms Ray has stripped down to the bare rock basics of two guitars, bass and drums. She has recreated the great tradition of the garage band (think neil Young and Nirvanna). Not only that but the music and playing shows that she is having a really good time doing it! I saw her in washington, D.C. and she broke a string. normally not a problem she just hands the guitar to a techie and gets a new one to carry on. well, this time she told the audience to talk amongst yourselves while she went and got another string and replaced it on stage! I have not seen that since high school. That is a bare minimum tour and she rocked out! this recording truly captures the spirit and sound of the tour. What we heard is what is on this recording. I recommend this recording to anyone who remembers great live recordings such as the James Gang and The Who.

    5 out of 5 stars A wonderful journey.......2006-02-17

The guitar performance is as good as it gets. Every track could have been recorded as a solo performance and worked very well. The percussion and saxophone enrich the context and move the performance into something more than just music. After listening you feel like you've just enjoyed something wonderful and at the same time you've been educated without realizing it! After listening you understand something about Latin American music that you didn't before.

5 out of 5 stars my introduction to the classical guitar technique.......2005-05-22

The Journey to the Amazon does just what the title suggests, taking you on an melodious adventure of guitar and local instruments and rhythms. This disc was my introduction to the sound of a classical guitar, and I found that the path Sharon Isbin took from more classical repertoire suited her style well. I may not have liked the sound of classical guitar at all if I had first listened to it in a more traditional genre.

    5 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing!!.......2004-02-29

This CD was my first exposure to Sharon Isbin, and I am absolutely mesmerized by it!! The music is beautiful, lyrical and moving. You can close your eyes and feel transported to a lovely other-worldly place full of graceful Latin/Brazilian rhythms.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond beautiful, a wonderful work.......2003-09-08

This recording was one of my early exposures to Sharon Isbin on CD. I had the pleasure of experiencing her live performance prior to the purchase of this CD. As a fan of heavier guitar music, (i.e. Steve Vai and Eric Johnson), I never believed I would enjoy a classical guitarist. I was so completely moved by the performance Ms. Isbin gives on this CD, that I promptly purchased "Dreams of a World" and most recently "Baroque Favorites for Guitar". I highly recommend this CD if you want to hear a guitarist whose work defies traditional categorization. I give it 10 stars! Please try to see Ms. Isbin live in recital if she comes to your area; you will experience a remarkable performance.

5 out of 5 stars As enjoyable as their live performance!.......2002-05-28

I had the good fortune of hearing these performers live and relished every moment. Rarely does a CD live up to a live performance, but this is one that does and more. A must buy!!

1 out of 5 stars Get the Rhino double-CDs while you can.......2007-05-26

It's true that these latest re-re-[re-, etc.]issues are not being forced upon anyone who already owns other copies of the albums. But for those of us who don't, it's frustrating that the most widely available editions of Costello's albums are now inferior to the previously released ones, which will no doubt become pricey and more difficult to seek out once they're out-of-print and the last lingering copies have been bought up. I've liked EC's music for a long time, but since he's an artist whose work can be heard in popular media, and since I own much of his music in one form or another, I've never felt compelled to go out and buy his albums, title by title, as they've been reissued. Now I feel obligated to buy the Rhino reissues while they're still available.

So, yes, it does suck that there's no incentive to buy these Universal re-releases other than the fact that they're what's in-print. The sound quality is nothing new, and there are none of the incredible bonus tracks that made the Rhino reissues so great. Maybe someday Universal will reissue them *again* with a track or two added to what was released by Ryko and Rhino, so they can shake as many pennies from fans' pockets as possible.

Until then, I'm getting the Rhino CDs while I can, and I recommend them to new fans or others who are buying the albums for the first time.

1 out of 5 stars No-one in their right mind would buy this........2007-05-20

Up until now, the repeated re-reissuing of EC's brilliant catalogue has been a delight and a thrill, with pleanty of new material added to the Ryko reissue, and then staggering amounts of it in the Rhino releases. But who in their right mind would buy any of these new reissues? How moronic does Hip-O think Elvis's fans are? I don't even buy the line that they are suitable for new EC fans. All fans, new and old, should own the Rhino reissues. This set doesn't even cover the Warners albums. I'm a long time, tragic EC fan, but he should be ashamed to sanction this latest reissue program, at least so far. The plans for later release of new material, and a deluxe MIAT look much more worthwhile.

1 out of 5 stars Elvis should have followed his own advice.......2007-05-19

When Elvis burst on the scene in 1977, he told an interviewer that he was going to quit after three LPs and that artists go on too long in their careers.

Amen, Elvis! Now why didn't you follow your own advice? You'd have been a classic and never have inflicted on the world "Punch the Clock" and the Brodsky Quartet recording of the Juliet Letters. Has any artist EVER suffered such an artistic decline? Well, yes, probably, but you'd have to think hard to come up with one.

As others have pointed out, this is a pointless re-re-re-re-compilation. Apparently it's for really busy people. You know, the ones who can't take the time to click the ORDER button several times for individual purchases. If there really are people like that purchasing this, I predict they won't make it through listening to the whole set. Again, they're too busy.

      5 out of 5 stars DON'T DO IT!.......2007-05-19

All of us audiophile/EC fans are fighting hard to resist these digipaks. It's comforting to know that so many owners of the Rhino 2-disc reissues feel the way I do about this new set - absolutely unnecessary. Put 'em out in SACD format and maybe I'll buy the catalog again.

2 out of 5 stars It's About Time These Have Been Re-Issued!.......2007-05-09

There seems to be a bit of a tug-o-war between fans who have bought the originals, re-issues and re-re-issues and those who mark the re-re-re-issue as something noteworthy. I fall into the former category and find that it makes sense (from Costello's accountants' point of view) and doesn't make sense (from the point of view of any consumer who already owns three copies of "Tokyo Storm Warning"). Personally, I'll wait until the Starbucks re-re-re-re-issue in 2010.
