As a veteran of Alison Krauss & Union Station and the Lonesome River Band (not to mention countless country and bluegrass recording sessions), Dan Tyminski had certainly paid his dues before his spot on the O Brother soundtrack brought him worldwide acclaim. The erstwhile Soggy Bottom Boy frontman issued his solo debut a few months before the soundtrack hit, and it features a wide and impressive range of current and former bandmates (including Krauss on a pair of tracks) plus several other A-list instrumentalists. The result is a deftly executed survey of the bluegrass table circa 2000, a menu that includes melodic pop, rousing gospel, hard-driving instrumentals, new compositions in a traditional style, and revived old favorites. --Marc Greilsamer

Dan assembeled a great group of bluegrass musicians!.......2007-07-29
Jim Mills, Tony Rice, Allison Krauss and more make this a must for anyone likes bluegrass from any of the above musicians.
Dan Tyminski.......2007-07-04
Fantastic album. Dan shines alone with his own album. If you like bluegrass, you eill like this album.
A great singer and picker.......2007-05-11
I love it and give it 5+ stars and all I've heard are the samples. I'm going straight up this page and putting it in my shopping cart. Can't wait to get it. And now I'm going to listen to some more of his albums. Just might buy them too.
half good.......2007-02-10
I was disappointed with this cd. Some of the tracks are quite good in the bluegrass tradition with a bit of a modern edge. While other tracks are better described as contemporary country. In the end about half the cd, the bluegrass half, was quite good. Still, 50% is a big 'F'.
Magnificent!.......2006-01-09
One of my absolute favorite CDs I've ever owned. Dan is a magnificent musician and person. I have seen him perform many times and have met him as well. This cd is one that is always in my cd player. He is an all around talent!!

The Doobie Shea breakthrough.......2003-09-09
A good friend of mine's family happens to own Doobie Shea records, so needless to say Dan's been around alot longer than "O ' Brother Where Art Thou". I Do have to say that "Carry Me Across the Mountain" envokes traditional bluegrass gospel and does not slack on musical talent. I would suggest this album, and many more under the Doobie Shea label, to any bluegrass fan.If you wish to check out more artists signed by Tim Austin at Doobie Shea, check out ... . And Please support you local musicians.
Bee-You-Tee-Ful Bluegrass.......2003-06-21
Dan is emerging as a leading voice in the Bluegrass scene. His musical inclusion of "Man of Constant Sorrow " from the movie "O Brother, Where Art Thou" catapulted Dan into the limelight and greatly widened public awareness of him and Bluegrass Music.
My only criticism of the CD is that the tracks move from "kick-ass" high energy bluegrass to slow romantic bluegrass ballads then back again. Too mood swingish! Otherwise, I highly recommend this CD for anyone's Bluegrass collection.
In my top 5.......2003-06-01
One of the CDs that never stays behind. Every CD has at least one song I have to skip - in this case, it's Please Dear Mommy but the rest of the music is top-notch in my opinion. There are 4 or 5 in my case that get played over and over and over... this is one of them. When Dan comes out with his #2 CD, I'll buy it sight unseen and tune unheard.
Disappointed.......2003-05-12
As a big fan of Union Station and O Brother, I had high expectations for this CD. Boy, was I disappointed. Most of the songs are either trite, sappy or too religious (not traditional gospel). Big, big disappointment.
The Future of Bluegrass Is In Good Hands.......2002-10-07
Since joining Alison Krauss's band Union Station in the late-Nineties, Dan Tyminski's star has been on the rise. With the release of "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" Tyminki's stock went through the roof. [In case you've been living in a cave for the past couple years, its'sTyminski's vocal on "Man of Constant Sorrow."] This album was released just months before the relase of the OBWAT? soundtrack, and it's filled with wonderful traditional bluegrass music. Tony Rice lends support on a couple tracks as does Alison Krauss along with all the members of Union Station. Favorite tracks include the gospel number "Praise the Lord" (co-written by Tyminski) and the Louvin Brothers cover, "Tiny Broken Heart." With artists like Dan Tyminski to carry the bluegrass torch into the 21st Century, the future of bluegrass looks bright indeed. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Album Description
NYC-based vocalist/guitarist O'Connor's songs are elemental and emotionally charged, but also suffused with humor and the kind of melodic invention that transcends the underground rock 'n' roll thing. Her influences are artists with a fresh take on self-awareness, from Destroyer, Silver Jews, Aimee Mann, and Smog, to Dylan and Petty, as well as Jay Z, Kanye West, and Dizzee Rascal. Featuring the bass stylings of James McNew (Yo La Tengo), the album also showcases Al Weatherhead on guitar, with keyboards and backing vocals by Kendall Meade (Sparklehorse, Helium), and the occasional backing vocals of Britt Daniel (Spoon). "Her music is laid back and literate...she often draws comparisons to Elliott Smith and old-school Liz Phair, and it's easy to see why. Her songs are simple, melodic, and direct, and her voice is raw and real" - Venus.
Customer Reviews:
God keeps us guessing and I've been guessing hard.......2006-09-06
I've been waiting for Jennifer O'Connor 's new album since I saw her open for Hotel Lights earlier this summer (7/15/06 @ The Flying Anvil; Greensboro, NC). She was a gracious, talented and touching musician who played alone on the stage that particular performance and impressed the hall of a couple dozen as the crowd built. By the end of her performance everyone was paying heavy attention, worried they missed too much by underestimating her.
Afterward, she was equally sweet and unassuming. She happily signed a poster for my daughter and chatted with Darren Jesse, who seem genuinely comforted by her presence on this first date of the short tour up the east coast.
Now I can sit among the rainy windows and take in her new album with all of its bare honesty and telling rhymes. She's a singer-songwriter in the best sense- i.e., it's a sense of her own. The album is perfectly produced, which is to say it isn't over-produced and instead showcases an intimacy that nearly produces a feeling of her breath from the speakers, as if she was singing over your shoulder (particularly on tracks like "Today").
I'd be remiss to not comment on the content of the album, and you know what, I think I'll risk just being remiss. (Pitchfork liked the LP and covers this subject if you're interested.) Suffice to say that in terms of lyrics this album speaks to loss in the same personal and nuanced way that the Eels' Electroshock Blues did. But this album isn't about what we think of Jennifer's life, it's about what we feel when we listen to her express herself.
And I find it beautiful.

Album Description
Errol Morris' adroitly assembled documentary film "The Fog of War" examines the career of Robert S. McNamara-- United States Secretary of Defense during the Kennedy and Johnson Administrations and whose tenure includes the Vietnam War and the Cuban Missile Crises. Combining excerpts from 26 hours of interviews with McNamara, archival footage, filmed recreations, as well as newly declassified White House recordings Morris' filmmaking illuminates a national past that ominously parallels the contemporary political present. Morris reveals what previous biographies failed to investigatethe relationship between McNamara and the infamous United States General Curtis LeMay and their involvement in the firebombing of Tokyoalong with 67 other Japanese citiesin 1945. Errol Morris states "The easy thing to say would be McNamara is a bad guy, he did all these bad things...the story is more complex and far more interesting than I imagined. The disturbing thing is that this was a man with real ethical dimension who did something terrible."
As with music previously contributed to Morris' films, Philip Glass' score to "The Fog of War" effortlessly supports and enhances the film. The music, at times lyrical and at other times intense, deepens the horrifying images of war, highlighting the ambiguities of McNamara's characterand the consequences of his actions. Glass' music reinforces Morris' effort to understand the difficult ethical questions about governing and power raised by "The Fog of War".
Album Description
The acclaimed composer's score to the 2003 documentary by Errol Morris, their third collaboration. The film is subtitled ''11 Songs From The Life of Robert S. McNamara. Orange Mountain Music.
Customer Reviews:
(G)lassy.......2007-07-28
Some people hear things others never do. Of these, a few write them down. Of these, a small number create a theme and variations upon it that cohere and enthrall.
Philip Glass belongs to this minute group of human beings. Fortunately for us, recorded music exists to make his work available to all and at any time. His soundtrack for the Errol Morros documentary on Robert McNamara is a lesson in how to create film music that unobtrusively ups the ante of the film it graces.
Glass' score both intensifies and accelerates the movie. It is nearly impossible for one not to experience a quickened pulse when Glass pulls together--of all things, a snare drum, a bit of low brass, and a flute.
Ah, that flute. It floats in and out of track after track, bereft of its customary vibrato, a penetrating, entrancing reminder that something serious is going on in the film. It is a masterful use of a small, metal pipe. At the command of Glass, the humble flute and its younger brother the piccolo punch considerably above their weight.
Who could write such a work? Probably only Philip Glass.
The movie's pretty good, too.
Excellent.......2006-08-09
Intriguing historical account of MacNamara- what he was thinking, what he did not say during two administrations involved in the Viet Name war. Use of film footage and Philip Glass' eerie and ominous soundtrack further developed the power of this film.
The film was great, but the score made it outstanding. .......2004-08-05
Ever thought about what it would be like to watch a film with no muscial score? I have and I did for this documentary. Believe me when I write this, there's no way this film would have been as good without Glass' melodic brutality looming in the background.
Glass does something wonderful with this score; he gives war, uncertainty, doubt and fear a musical element, an audible personality that captures each bomb, burnt building and ominous threat in complete perfection, leaving your ears and your mind in a state of disbelief and amazement, thinking to yourself, "Wow, that music fits this segment like a glove."
The Thin Blue Line score made me an instant Glass fan but this score made me borderline Glass fanatic.
In my opinion, he surpasses Carter Burwell in the category of most unflinching film composer.......by a long shot.
A Great Soundtrack for a Great Film.......2004-05-24
Errol Morris is the best documentary film maker ever and The Fog of War is his crowning achievement. The film explores the complexity of war and how it evolves. There is no political bias or agenda here...just plain truth and facts. Great work. Equal to the task is Phillip Glass's soundtrack. The music is haunting and eerie.
ANOTHER GREAT GLASS SCORE!.......2004-03-31
I'll keep this review short, just like the length of the pieces on the CD. This is yet another great score by Glass, and superbly recorded as well. Glass uses his classic strings and percussion to great effect and oftentimes great surprise as well.
This score has more variety than Glass's score for another Morris film, "The Thin Blue Line". By the way, will "The Thin Blue Line" ever get released on DVD?
The pieces are all short ones, which makes it an easier listen for Glass newbies I would imagine, but I would have preferred a few longer pieces- all the short pieces make it sound like "Glass fragments"- on some pieces once Glass gets going he has to come to a stop.
Still, I wholeheartedly recommend this wonderful CD!

Great vocal virtuosity.......2005-04-07
This is a great recording, by two great artists. Carole Farley is the ideal singer for Ned Rorem's songs. She spell out every
word and every nuance, giving each song and every poem their full character. The songs are a revelation. I recommend this recording without hesitation.
Christoph (Berlin, Germany)
Confuzzled.......2004-01-03
While these song are GREAT...I cannot get over Carole Farley; her voice is so affected (kind of like a sprechstimme; overly dramatic...). I love the fact that Rorem himself is playing the piano, and as a singer, the catalogue of songs is good to have...but cant say I could ever manage getting over Farley's affectation. There are far superior recordings out there.
An American Composer of Art Song.......2003-04-02
American popular song, whether standards, show tunes, jazz, blues, or rock, is one of our country's most visible artistic achievements. American classical (or Art) songs are much less known. Ned Rorem (b. 1923) is probably the greatest American composer in this unfamiliar medium. Rorem is sometimes dubbed the "American Schubert."
This disc features 32 of Ned Rorem's songs for voice and piano. Soprano Carole Farley is the accomplished singer, and Ned Rorem himself plays the piano. The disc is special because it features settings of the works of American poets. The CD begins with 9 settings of poems by the mid-twentieth century poet, Theodore Roethke, and concludes with settings of 5 poems by Walt Whitman. The disc also includes settings of poems by William Carlos Williams, Gertrude Stein, and Paul Goodman, among others. Thus the disc combines in a special way American creative effort in poetry and in music.
Rorem's songs are declamatory in style. Typically, the voice line delivers the text of the poetry in a sort of chant. The relationship between the voice line and the piano is far from Schubertian. Generally, the piano takes a separate line and accentuates the voice by means of large chords or by runs or by other comments and punctuation on the voice. The texts are well set and the music is effective. There are some unusual harmonies with jazz and blues influences. Rorem's piano accompanyment on this disc gives the recording a sense of authenticity -- we get a good idea of how the composer wants his songs to be conveyed.
The disc includes excellent program notes and texts of all the songs. Naxos has received deservedly high praise for its "American Classics" series which makes much music written by Americans available on CD at a low price. This disc includes some lovely, little-known songs. It is an excellent introduction to the American art song and to the music of Ned Rorem.
more German than Rorem.......2002-07-20
I've been a Rorem fan since hearing a highschool friend perform some of his work in her college recital. His startling, atonal songs were an instant revelation. For years there were few reliable CDs of his vocal work. A scandal considering his reputation rests more on his art songs and chamber music than on his orchestral pieces. This Naxos entry of a wide overview of his best songs is thus quite welcome, due largely to its availability, wide distribution and professional packaging (he's had some shoddy issues before with incorrect liner notes, etc.; the challenge of the low budget).
I can't call myself an unalloyed fan of soprano Carole Farley however. Her delivery here recalls the speak-singing style of German 12-tone composers (a specialty of hers), and can sound melodramatic, especially when she rushes the more delicate passages.
I prefer Rorem's softer, more melodious French side, the one that descends from Impressionism and is more warmly emotive. While Farley loses the shading of some of the more fragile songs, she is well-suited to the longer, more forceful pieces. I've heard many readings of "Early in the Morning" (one of Rorems most popular songs) by male and female vocalists, and its tale of wistful nostalgia is muted by Farley's direct approach. However, she nails "My Papa's Waltz," a fractured setting for a Roethke poem about a frightened child forced to dance with a drunken father. Here her acting skills come to the fore, and she perfectly captures the tipsy madness of the song. Rorem can be quite theatrical himself on occasion. She does almost as well with "See How they love me," a ballad with a regular pace that allows her assertive style to breathe.
At any rate it's great to hear these lovely songs in a recent (2000) recording, accompanied (rather emphatically, but perhaps he's matching his theatrical singer) by Rorem himself.
The similar Susan Graham album is more to my taste, but this is a more than competent bargain set.
delightful art songs.......2002-01-02
rorem's songs are amazing, and naxos has done well
to group them by poet. the complete settings of roethke
are particularly compelling and edgey.
carole farley's voice is lovely, but her phrasing
and willingness to push her voice seems
a big departure from the styling of art songs i've
heard by poulenc and somers.
this takes some getting used to- at least 3 or 4 complete
listen-throughs in my case. her voice is almost jazzy,
kind of like early recordings by holly cole.
anyway, rorem accompanies her on piano so obviously
this reading fits with his intent; his playing is also delightful.
one small quibble- although there are 32 songs, the CD is
57 minutes- brief by naxos standards.

Customer Reviews:
Just plain old good music with a beat from a great age........1998-09-29
An excellent recording from a great era of music that never gets dated. A nice lively spirit lifting experience for those who love brass and small town bands the way they used to be.

Album Description
Raging bombardment in the vein of COMBATWOUNDEDVETERAN, TRAGEDY, BORN AGAINST, and FROM ASHES RISE (with a tip of the hat to Eighties punk & Japanese thrash)! Blistering! Abrasive!
THM is the new band founded by Dan (a.k.a. Ponch) from COMBATWOUNDEDVETERAN & members of THE BLACKOUT TERROR!! Over the course of CWV, Dan shifted between bass and vocals- in THM, he fills both roles full time!! Recorded by Mark Nikolich at Atomic Audio (FLOOR, COMBATWOUNDEDVETERAN) ...so you know it's brutalicious!!
Evocative artwork jumps off the cover and smacks innocent bystanders, courtesy of Steak Mtn (Chris / CWV)! They even cover CRASS and ANTI-CIMEX! Includes all of the songs from their 12" and 7", plus two extras! Insanity!!
