I'm not overly familiar with Manhattan Transfer's catalogue but I've liked a number of their songs over the years. I settled on this collection because it included their 90s song I always liked "The Offbeat of Avenues". However, it's not the album version of the song that I remember but the version from their "Symphony Sessions" album. But it's an interesting interpretation with the orchestra so I wasn't disappointed. The track list Amazon supplies is very off so don't use that to make your final decision. Here's the correct track listing:

The tracks listed on Amazon.com currently (Jan. 2007) are not correct -
7 tracks listed here do not actually appear on the CD set. They are:
Ray's Rockhouse, Body And Soul, Helpless, Love For Sale,
Down South Camp Meetin, Sing Moten's Swing, and Stompin at Mahogany Hall.
In their place are 4 newer songs from 1997-2006, along with Popcicle Toes,
So You Say (Esquinas), and Why Not (Manhattan Carnival).
For me, the loss of Body & Soul and Ray's Rockhouse (both among their 15 "Greatest Hits") made this set a throwaway. Hold on to your old 2-CD box "Down In Birdland" from Rhino.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Ibert Collection.......2005-01-20

This is a great collection of music by Jacques Ibert. The disc begins with the Elizabethan Suite, composed for a production of A Midsummer's Night Dream. The pieces are neoclassical stylizations of the music of period composers John Blow, John Bull, Henry Purcell and Orlando Gibbons. The music has a Shakespearian sound but is for a modern orchestra without any attempt to include period instruments. The orchestration is for percussion, winds and strings, except for cellos and basses, with a woman's chorus. There is a Chasson de fees for soprano that is well sung by Lynne Vardaman. The music successfully imitates the 17th century and each piece is more enchanting that the one before it.

The Concerto for Flute is a competition staple of flautists. It was written in 1933 and beautifully displays the colors of sound and the technical brilliance of the flute. Eugenie Zuckerman negotiates the technical difficulties marvelously and provides a great performance of the concerto on this CD. The Symphonic Suite - Paris is one of my favorite pieces by Ibert. It is cast in 6 short movements describing places (Ibert provided a detailed program) in the city: the Metro, the Faubourgs, the mosque with its influence of North Africa, a restaurant in the Bois de Boulogne, the Ile de France and a holiday parade. It is not a typical view of Paris and the music was actually composed for a play in 1930. It is a colorful work presenting in music a personal picture of Paris. Among the scenes couples dancing a Charleston; the Ile de France section, a view of the city through the window of a shipping company and the bustle of the Paris metro at 8 in the morning..

The Capriccio, composed in 1938, is a colorful work that includes jazz syncopations. This is a wonderful short work filled with engaging music that when it ends you wish it were longer. The selections are well-performed by the Manhattan Chamber Orchestra. If you have an interest in French music, and Ibert in particular, this is a must have disc.

    I must admit that I enjoyed this sampler CD introduction to the musical world of Alan Hovhaness more than the other reviewer. These are peaceful and lovely recordings and renditions of these works. It was refreshing to hear a more varied collection of Hovhaness' sound than the repetitiveness that he is often criticized for. One of the criticisms of Hovhaness was that he was trying to be like Vaughan Williams in every piece (which is not true). He had a specific spiritual "vision" that lent a characteristic sound to his music like many other composers.

    My one problem with this affordable disc is that the track listing is incorrect for the pieces: Mountain Idyll and Sonata Fred the Cat (both solo piano works). They are listed as having multiple tracks (#5-7) and (#9-12) when in actuality they are on the CD in single one track movements, so the CD comes out actually having 8 tracks (1 per work sampled). For a while I thought I had the wrong CD or it was defective. Then I figured it out by putting it in my CD Rom and it displayed the actual track listing with titles through Windows Media Player.

    2 out of 5 stars Hovhaness needs more maturity.......2005-02-02

    I was very dissapointed when I heard this album. The sound is tinny, strident, and unbalanced. I can imagine how hard it is for unfunded orchestras to make recordings, but this sounds like a scraggly bunch of pickup players who play with no soul. Hovhaness demands a fuller, burnished tone. Even worse than the poor sound quality and sketchy intonation is the lack of a sense of flexibility and nuance. The hollowness of the playing would not be so offensive if there were a feeling of expansiveness, languidness, or generousity. I can't help thinking the composer would be very saddened by this effort. I hope Mr. Clark's realizes someday that music is not something that can be hammered out like a wall street stock deal. The kind of crassness on display here is better suited to commerce or (lamentably), politics.

      I've had the pleasure of hearing Kevin Gallagher and Antigoni Goni perform live, and they blew the audience away.

      This CD is just as stunning as their live performance, capturing all of the passion and nuance that makes the Manhattan Guitar Duo the best guitar duo working today.

        I'd listen half of the songs and is without doubt a nice album.
        Other reviewers complains that only 2 themes were composed by our beloved keyboardist; but no one said if he's the performer of the others. Could anyone clear up this confusion?

        I enjoyed this album. Only two works are KE according to liner notes. One is from the soundtrack from Inferno and the other is from Honky. I have been unable to track down the albums from the other artists. Do not purchase if you own the other albums except to sample a few other keyboardists of unknown origins. The other songs are classical and new age in nature with some jazz influences similar to Kitaro and KE.

        It's more than a little deceiving to tout this as a Keith Emerson album, becuase there are only a few tracks by him. Also, some of his selections that appear here are available on other Keith Emerson albums. So, with that caveat, it's still not bad music. If you're into new age, piano based music, then this will fit the bill. It's good background music for the office. But don't expect the unique Keith Emerson sound that his fans are accustomed to.

        Keith Emerson is my #1 influence! This album is a scam! Two songs from Keith (which I remember nothing about)! Six other poorly recorded, terrible new age songs from nobodies. Somebody wants your money! (It came out 20 years ago, I don't know where they dug it up.) I'd give it no stars but they won't let me.

        An album Keith Emerson fans have been waiting for! Keith at his finest. Keith Emerson is without a doubt the best keyboard player ever. A MUST for all ELP fans.
