5 out of 5 stars superb album; his best overall effort by far!.......2005-12-07

Having heard of all of Greg Trooper's recordings, I have to say that this is his best overall effort....

there is absolutely no filler and most of the songs are superb...

admittedly, I have the original issue, so the bonus tracks are not part of this review......

an album worthy of the "desert island" cliche....

enjoy!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Trans-Genre Musicianship.......2004-02-13

Montreux is a remakable, if somewhat eclectic group of musicians that were one of the highpoints of the 80's musical scene. Composed of Barbara Higbee, Darol Anger, Mike Marshall, Andy Narell, and Michael Manring, there was no lack of talent. Treading lightly on the boundaries between new age, jazz, country, and sheer inventiveness they drew many fans and accolades over the years, many of them are still actively recording.

It isn't easy to pin down their style to any one genre or sound. The presence of Darol Anger on violin provides unexpected blue grass effects in the middle what would otherwise be mainstream new age. Infectious and ingenious rhythmic approaches abound. In the midst of upbeat acoustic stylings, electronic choruses will put in opportune appearances. As with all good albums, repeated listening reveals fine details of musicianship and texture.

Whether you like upbeat works like Skywriting or To Be, the melodic style of Sweet Intentions, or more experimantal pieces like Sign Language and Jacob Do Bandalim there is a lot to listen to. None of which is 'typical' fare. If you like pleasant surprised, stop here a while.

My entire family loves this CD. The songs are fun for all ages and you will not be disapointed!

5 out of 5 stars Very Catchy Music.......2006-04-01

The lyrics in all the songs are very catchy and my 2 year old has added several words to her vocabulary. The interactive songs allows my daughter to "touch her toes," and "put her paws in the air!" Even my husband and I go around the house singing Anne's songs. It is definitely a family friendly CD and your kids will especially love to dance and sing to it--you will NOT be disappointed.

    5 out of 5 stars BOOGIE DOWN!.......2006-03-30

This AMAZING music is for young and old alike, but most especially our little "critters" who love to sing and dance. Moms, Dads, Grandmas, Grandpas won't be able to resist the temptation to join in. The artists lyrics, music, and sounds, make this CD come alive. My 2-year-old granddaughter has this permanently placed in her very own player and never misses a beat. Fun to "sign" as well as "sing" along. Great for exercise and definitely "toe-tappin" music. I rate this a MUST HAVE...and a must GIFT-GIVER!

I cannot think of a single band that is more underrated than these guys. By pure luck, I stumbled across their music a few months ago and have since fallen in love with it. While vivacious and lively, their songs somehow manage to also emit a mellow, soothing sentiment to its listeners.

Like the user reviews before me have said, you will not regret checking Bugs in Amber out.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome and refreshing musical talent..........2000-12-11

I've been listening to Bugs in Amber for a few years since their first album, Trafalmadorian (sp?) Philosophy and I can honestly say that this is a great band. I even hung out with the members of the band one great summer a couple summers back. They have refreshing musical talent and Sonny's lyrics are nothing short of genius. Friend or Foe has been a favorite song in my arsenal since their self released EP Friend or Foe, but I was pleased to hear that the other songs have taken on even more depth and beauty. The dynamic of the whole band together and the individual sounds of seven different musical instruments is magical. I would definitely recommend this album to anyone who enjoys Radiohead, Modest Mouse, Built to Spill, and my favorite, Smashing Pumpkins. Try it out...you won't be disappointed! You can see more about them on bugsinamber.com if you're interested.

5 out of 5 stars Finally! Something great to listen to!.......2000-04-28

Bugs in Amber have been penned as an orchestra pop band...but they are so much more than that. After reading great reviews of them I decided to check them out live and without a moment's hesitation bought their cd. From "factory paradise" (an anthem for anyone who has been stuck under their supervisor's thumb) to "noon" (I have never even imagined something could sound like this!) to "rockin' chair in the country" (makes you want to jump in a lincoln and drive just 400 miles down the road)...this 7 piece band is unlike anything else out there. I couldn't even choose a favorite song for this review because they are all great! The cd rocks like no other and will become an underground classic without a doubt.

Great songs with intelligent lyrics, written and performed by a talented musician with a beautiful voice. Blues-based with a Louisiana flavor, this is music for grown-ups that's way too hard to find. If this kind of music started hitting the air waves, adults would start listening to the radio and buying CDs again.

Confessions of a Spiritually-Wretched Mind would be a good title for Real Panic Formed if it were ever made into a movie (with Philip Seymour Hoffman playing the rebellious but always lovable Jeff Suffering, no doubt). In other words, this album is full of honesty, the blunt kind rather than the courteous. It's almost as if Suffering ripped out his heart, Indiana Jones Temple of Doom style, and stuffed it into a CD case for all the world to buy, open, and partake in the bloodied organ that is his soul.

Now, I know I'm on a metaphorical role here, but I need to stop for a moment to clear something up: Jeff Suffering is not a Nick Cave clone. Despite that Suffering calls his backing bad "the Hideous Thieves" (sounding suspiciously similar to "Bad Seeds"), despite that both Jeff and Nick know how to summon the darkest spirits from their souls, and despite that the photographs for Cave's No More Shall We Part and Suffering's album here look very much alike (reminding me of a Backstreet Boys photo session gone freaking mad), Jeff Suffering is NOT mimicking Nick Cave.

Okay well, maybe just a little bit. Suffering would be the first to claim Cave as one of his heroes. If there's anything in Real Panic Formed that will give a Cave veteran familiar flashbacks, it's probably intentional and more tribute than plagiarism. So, having got that off my chest, let's move on.

The album begins with All My Friends Are On Prozac, which pretty much sums up the lyrical themes presented here: Depression and suicide. When Suffering isn't dwelling on these themes, he's either rotting in jail ("Lonely Tonight") or confessing more about his sexual life than most of us would be comfortable knowing ("The Other Side of the Moon," "Sex Is Dead").

While Jeff's raspy, off-key (and often horrible) voice perfectly suites the material he's singing about, the songs in themselves are beautifully orchestrated and played. The contrast between the vocals and melody make for an interesting, even artistic, effect. It makes Suffering sound like even more of a lost-in-the-desert, thirsty wretch when he's surrounded by the string arrangements of "Cure Violence With Violence" or "Ugly" (a song that almost had me in tears because of its beauty). Only in "My Black Heart Infection" does the chaotic rhythm match Suffering's primitive screaming.

So, pull up a chair and drink some of Jeff Suffering's latest blood. It's stirred to perfection, as dirty as it looks on the surface. Mmmmm, tasty.

        5 out of 5 stars Absolutley amazing.......2002-06-24

I saw suffering and the hideous thieves open for a hardcore show a year ago and to say the least, I was not impressed at all, I thought of it as emo art music. Today, after a much more open mind, I appreciate the music that they make and hold it in high regard as completely and utterly AMAZING! Such a change came over my impression of this band when I saw them the second time, I was totally awestruck by their perfomance and satisfied with their recording presented here.

        5 out of 5 stars you can't cure violence..........2002-03-31

first of all, one must realize exactly how many people are in this band. the delicate balance between vocals and guitars, guitars and piano, piano and violin (you get the point) is an intricate display of the sadness found in everything beautiful. i waited for two months for this record, from the time i first saw this band until its release. totally breathtaking, the record is only half as good as the visceral live performance by Jeff Suffering (i recall a particular show at the Paradox in Seattle, watching a silent film in the background of a candle-lit stage, every player in perfect harmony with one another... amazing). the record helps bring back those moments some of us have forgotten, pushed aside in order to continue on with our day to day... tracks like "cure violence with violence" or "my black heart infection" are the perfect balance between all that is ugly about your soul, and all that is genuinely beautiful about it at the same time. "all my friends are on prozac" brings me a little chuckle ("this song's not about me, it's about my friends!") when flashing back to a show in MountLake... this is what i get out of this record, anyway... buy this record!!! support local live music!!! go see Suffering and the Hideous Thieves!!!
