The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.

Monsoon Wedding is Mychael Danna's second collaboration with film director Mira Nair, (Kama Sutra was the first), and he has again compiled a winning soundtrack. Danna explores a wide range of emotions, from solemn to celebratory, through different generations of Indian culture. The contemplative "Good Indian Girls" and "Hold Me, I'm Falling" feature Danna's trademark piano ambience over traditional Indian instrumentation, and the vivacious "Baraat" sounds like a Punjabi variation on Dixieland, while "Delhi.com" ventures into dreamy ethno-techno territory. Sukhwinder Singh's "Today My Heart Desires" serves up lively bhangra rock, and Laxmikant Pyarelal's "Today the Weather Plays Tricks on Me" (performed by Mohammed Rafi) swoons with strings and male vocals. I just saw the movie MONSOON WEDDING and I absolutely loved it! Of course, I just HAD to have the soundtrack, so I bought the Cd recently and loved it too! WOW!

The Cd will leave you in a happy mood... Wonderful up-beat songs, many are so danceable and hipnotic. I've been playing this Cd all week ...I just wish it were longer because I would love to have more Cds like this in my Cd collection.

This is an excellent soundtrack from an excellent movie. The music is fantastic - makes you want get up and move your feet! It's got such a happy, wistful, exotic flavor throughout the CD. I think this will probably be one that I wear out from listening to it so much!

I just love this CD. I'm preferential to the work of Mychael Danna and this is another awesome work of his. There is everything from old Indian love ballads to the popular Bollywood music of today, with some very beautiful instrumentals in between.

I'd recommend seeing the movie too. As well, I'd check out Danna's music for another Mira Nair movie, "Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love."

Above I listed some words that first came to mind when I thought about this cd.
It is very Culture rich and soaked in Indian flavor. It's colorful and makes you happy with a laugh or two; as it seeks to portray the traditional music typical of a Punjabi wedding in Delhi, India.
You want to dance with most songs and sit quietly to reflect with others. I listed appreciate because we often don't sit back to appreciate the richness that other cultures provide. My 2 year old appreciates this music in her broken wanna be Hindi mimic.
She dances as does my 6 year old to this music. It's really a great CD but I would recommend seeing the movie first.

Long Island's Soul for Real is in the tradition of bubblegum soul groups from the Jackson 5 through New Edition to Immature. The title track of Soul for Real's debut release, Candy Rain, broke through as a top-five pop hit and is symptomatic of an album full of bouncy, catchy melodies buoyed by sweet, skillful singing. Every Little Thing They Do.......2006-12-21

Is mad hot and very well done. It was easy to see from the very first note that Soul For Real had the goods and delivered them. With finesse, class and style no bumping and grinding or suggestive lyrics were needed. Just a heartfelt longing and sincerity that they brought into each and every song. Obviously "Candy Rain" was where it all started for these 4 brothers and they let everyone know that Soul For Real had arrived and could get down with the best of them. It's amazing to have someone that young with the vocals that Jason delivers in this song. The next hot joint being "Every Little Thing I Do" which had a very dancable beat to it and featured a SFR member taking the lead vocal reins this time and doing it with a cool and confident swagger with another well done video. The guys showed folks that werent some one hit wonders out for a quick buck.

With other very noteworthy tracks like "All In My Mind" with a heavy beat that resonates throughout the track and superb vocals once again by the guys. "If You Want It" was another hit off the album as well featuring their sisters-Nicole & Desiree on background vocals and Heavy D providing the hot lyrics this album just kept right on rolling. "I Wanna Be Your Friend", Jason delivers heartfelt vocals letting that certain someone know what they mean to him and the guys providing stellar backing vocals as well, its another not to be slept on track. Most interesting track would be their cover of Bill Withers song "Ain't No Sunshine" but you wouldnt know this because its handled with class and integrity. "Spend the Night" is sung and done well by Andre its a slow burner and adds another element to the cd overall.

"I Don't Know" follows the previous song and again. Its one that you can't skip at all. It's the longest song on the cd but you dont feel that at all. Its just enjoyable to listen to and i do just that. "If Only You Knew" is a cover of the Patti Labelle and i know it bears repeating but Soul For Real handle this song with care and breathe something new into and the vocals well you just have to hear them especially Jason towards the end of the song. You'll know what i mean when you hear it. With "Thinking of You" closing out the song its simple and all but well done brings to a close a stellar CD that still gets mad play by me and a worthy purchase for anyone that didnt get "Candy Rain" for whatever reason.

I remeber back in the spring of 1995, Candy Rain was a huge hit for Soul IV Real. Going to the middle school dances and hearing this song would be the highlight of the night. The follow up song Every Little Thing I Do which sampled The Gap Band was another huge smash, but for some reason their parent label MCA seemed to focus more on Immature.Soul For Real had good production due to Heavy D and Kenny "G-Love" Greene manning the group behind the scenes.

This album is 10 years old and to me, it STILL sounds good. I remember when I first heard "Candy Rain" on the radio. I was deeply drawn to it. For one thing, I liked the beat a lot, knowing was Tribe Called Quest's "Check The Rhime" beat. The lyrics were real sweet and I loved it. Then "Every Little Thing I Do" was released as their next single. I remembered how nice the video was, with the people on skates, skating around them as they sang. One of my favorite songs off of this album in addition to the two above is "I Don't Know." This song is soooooo pretty. This album will always be a classic to me.

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

The Whole Thing.......2007-05-10

If there's an earlier 'Peer Gynt' recording that's complete (as opposed to just the 'suite') I've never heard of it. This is the entire incidental music to the play, not just the usual 'Dawn', 'The Hall of the Mountain King' 'Solveig's Song', etc.
Jarvi's reading is smooth and incisive and the choral parts are wonderful. I've never heard a scarier version of HOTMK. I never even knew that there was a solo vocal part for Peer himself, but here it is.

My only complaint-and it's a tiny one-is that the selections are not in the order that they would appear in Ibsen's play. But that's picking a very small nit indeed.

Hauntingly Beautiful.......2007-03-11

Conductor Paavo Jarvi does a masterful job of leading the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra plays with great emotion and precision creating an exciting and almost hypnotic effect. Although Beecham's version is very good, his Peer Gynt does not come close to matching the sheer beauty of Jarvi's.
The soloists on this album are outstanding. I consider baritone Peter Mattei to be the most talented baritone of his type today and his rendition of Peer Gynt's Serenade is nothing short of incredible. Soprano Camilla Tilling as Soveig has a lovely ethereal sound to her voice which is used to great effect in her songs. Tilling has the loveliest female voice I have ever heard. Mezzo Charlotte Hellekant has also grown on me as Anitra. Many of these vocal songs are not included on other versions of Peer Gynt, which is a great shame. The choir, something I don't usually enjoy, is very impressive.
I would rate this CD as by far the best version of Peer Gynt and perhaps my favorite CD of all time. The sound quality of the recording should also be mentioned because it is absolutely stunning.

Good-enough readings but outstanding sound.......2007-02-21

I don't find that Paavo Jarvi and his Estonian forces have much to say in the familiar numbers from Peer Gynt. You must turn to Beecham for sheer delight in famous numbers like In The Hall of the Moutain King, Morning, Anitra's Dance, and so on. Where this recording scores is in the unfamiliar numbers; Peter Matteo's excellent rendition of the little-known Peer Gynt's Serenade is one highlight, as is the convincingly crude folk fiddling that begins half a dozen numbers.

Secondly, there's the sound. The engineers have achieved quite exceptinally clear, open sonics that I've never heard the like of in Peer Gynt. Even when Jarvi's conducting is ordinary and his Estonian musician ae playing at far less than virtuosic level, the gorgeous sounds coming out of one's speakers remain alluring. As far as completeness goes, the Ruud 2-CD set from Bis is unchallenged.

Passionate.......2006-08-18

The story line gives the listener a guide to follow the music, but the score leaves out the connections for the listener to only imagine the performance. The music is passionate and descriptive and introduces the listener to the singing voices of parts of the presentation that are left out in the "Suite." I appreciate hearing it over and over.

Maybe this is THE (one disc-) Peer Gynt album to own ..........2006-02-15

... to keep closely beside the gorgeous, incisively intelligent and deeply concentrated performance (also on 1 CD) with Esa-Pekka Salonen conducting the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and Barbara Hendricks singing the role of Solveig (Sony Classical).
Together with the recordings by Neeme Jarvi (27 cues; DGG), Marriner (only 12 cues; EMI), Tate (17 cues; EMI), Blomstedt (19 cues; Decca), Dreier (the first truly complete recording of all of the original music (1978); 32 cues, including 'Bridal Procession', 'Solveig's Song' and three 'Norwegian Dances' all of them n o t originally written for the play; Unicorn UKCD + NKFCD) and Ruud (the first complete recording with 29 cues plus all of the dialogue, making a total of 51 cues, coming up on 113 minutes; BIS), these two (1-CD) albums by Paavo Jarvi and Esa-Pekka Salonen are as complete as can get concerning this so called 'incidental' music for the Henrik Ibsen play of Peer Gynt. Nowadays, Peer Gynt is Norway's No. 1 national epic, thereby giving this music extra significance and poignancy. Originally, there are in all some twenty-six numbers of incidental music for the play: almost ninety minutes of music, as can be learned from the booklet-essay. And according to the booklet, twenty of those are on this album; No. 5, 10, 11, 14, 18 and 24 are left out of this recording. 'Solveig's Song' wasn't originally written for the stage play but nonetheless included as such on this CD, so actually 19 original pieces from Peer Gynt, op. 23 are on this album, and not 20. But anyhow, such 'criticism' would amount to nitpicking ;-)
Here I would like to warn the reader that this will be a somewhat one-sided review, as I have only ever heard the Peer Gynt-recordings of Esa-Pekka Salonen, Per Dreier (freshly inspired, very natural performances) and this newest one of Paavo Jarvi. So this review is, for what it is worth, a personal and somewhat subjective approach, leaving out many other alternatives ...

Anyhow, as for the one-CD albums of Peer Gynt, op. 23, the merits of the Salonen/Oslo Philharmonic album (aside from the artistic ones, which are huge, as well as spot on as far as the 'Nordic' atmosphere of the music is concerned) lie in the fact that - up to now - it has been as near 'complete' a rendering of the music for Peer Gynt - as much as fits on one CD - as one might wish, covering the whole dramatic arc of the play from beginning to end (but without any of the spoken dialogue). I believe that this new recording with Paavo Jarvi is even more complete - as could be fitted on one disc - and gives the listener an even better feel of the drama of the play, if only because there is more singing here, namely by Peer Gynt (in the delightful 'Peer Gynt's Serenade'). Also, one hears here seldomly recorded, but wonderfully evocative pieces, such as 'Peer Gynt and the Woman in Green', 'Peer gynt: you can tell great men by the style of their mounts', 'Peer Gynt at the Statue of Memnon' (similar to 'Prelude Act III: Deep in the Coniferous Forest' on the Salonen/Oslo Philharmonic album. Actually it is the same piece, but it was never intended as the prelude to act III) and 'The Shipwreck'. Simply delightful, all this! As are all the soloists - truly, the best one could wish for! - singing in this recording. If I may steal a quote from Tim Ashley, The Guardian, May 13, 2005: "Peter Mattei is the swollen-headed Peer, Camilla Tilling a dignified, unsentimental Solveig and the incomparable Charlotte Hellekant a camp but lethally seductive Anitra." But although Camilla Tilling's Solveig is superb, IMHO she is not as completely involved-sounding or as convincing in the projecting of the troubled mind and heart of (especially the elderly) Solveig as does Barbara Hendricks for Esa-Pekka Salonen.
Even more than Esa-Pekka Salonen's performance with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, this recording offers the listener a more 'true to the letter-performance', as the music is here performed as heard during the play, as witnessed by 'Solveigs vuggevise' ('Solveig's Cradle Song'), where her singing is interlaced with the 'Whitsun Hymn', which, to the ears of this listener, only heigtening the sense of drama and storytelling.
All in all a fantastic album, I believe, and one that brings into focus the drama even more than other recordings of this music. Even though the orchestral playing of the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra is maybe a (slight) nodge below that of the Oslo Philharmonic under Salonen and missing out on the deepest or finer layers of melancholy and dramatic tension (which are indeed touched upon by Salonen, I think), it is warmly sympathetic and more lush (as is the acoustics of the recording venue).
The really adventurous or Peer Gynt-completists (and once taken this step, the all too brief Suites will never be an option again!) should really go for Dreier or Ruud - this last one is said to be simply magnificent (music as well as acting) - but this generous one disc album, with some of the most gorgeous playing and singing, is warmly recommended (at least, in my opinion) to anyone who loves this wonderfully evocative music. Delightful!

Every now and then, a band releases a best-of album that makes the previously unimpressed see what they've been missing all along. On Like the Deserts Miss the Rain Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn of Everything but the Girl have created a personal blend of big hits, obscure b-sides, album tracks, and remixes that amounts to the best record of their 20-year career. We may know that they began as lefty student bossa nova interpreters, grabbed unlikely success as Sade-for-bedsits with 1984's "Each and Every One" single and 1988's Idlewild album, and went successfully house and drum & bass with "Missing" and Walking Wounded in the mid-1990s. What we perhaps missed is how subtly and powerfully they've developed their style, how even the most MOR moments have contained some kind of edge--a vocal yearning here, a rhythmic muscularity there. Thorn's lyrics are a particular revelation--defiant, angry, funny and true--and her moving expression of sisterly love on "Protection" sounds more at home here than on the Massive Attack album of the same name. In short, this is a deep and entertaining pop record that shows exactly why they've survived and thrived for so long. --Garry Mulholland

Best of/greatest hits compilations are a hit and miss with diehard fans of a particular group or artist. There is always someone who thinks that the artist/band missed a particular song. Then there are artists who will include one too many previously unreleased tracks/b-sides/remixes which detracts the whole concept of greatest hits/best of albums. Neither is the case here on Everything but the Girl's "Like the Deserts Miss the Rain" cd, a compilation of the duo's past hits as well as remixes. "Like the Deserts Miss the Rain" is has everything on this cd that will please most EBTG fans. The flow of the cd is smooth and effortless. This is a perfect cd to listen to on a Sunday morning while drinking a cup of coffee and reading the Sunday paper. The fusion of airy acoustic guitars, laid back trip hop grooves, and Tracey Thorn's warm vocals makes this cd such a joy to listen to. I especially enjoy listening to "My Head is My Only House Unless it Rains", "Rollercoaster" and "Protection". I used to not like the much overplayed Todd Terry remix of "Missing" but I actually can enjoy the song now since I haven't heard it in years. Overall great compilation. The only minor flaw with the album is that I would have liked to have heard a track or two off "Temperamental" otherwise I was not disappointed in it

Why mess with success?.......2007-02-07

While I think that it's great that the band picked out what they thought were their best tunes, why did they alter them? Some of the changes are subtle, and some are overt, but all of the changes take away from the originals charm. I wanted what I had heard before, not what you wanted to record differently the second time around. If they had been released in this version, they would not have been hits. I'm still a fan, but remember that it's not cool to fool us.

From my point of view...............2007-06-05

I discovered Jessy from the UltraTrance:2 cd and DVD set. Her video is entitled "Look @ Me Now" and it is the second video on the DVD (There is another version of this video as well.)

I was instantly hooked on the song. Although I have downloaded most of her songs, I still wanted to have her cd, as in, a REAL cd and not just songs put together from here and there.

I work as a photographer for some Tampa Bay Area Djs and I get to listen to the hot new stuff before it hits the stores and I get asked for my honest opinions and now, I shall do the same for Jessy:

Buy Jessy's album. Seriously. It's a great album and it showcases her voice on different rhythms/beats and she does a stellar job.

Her voice is "different." It is not really that high pitched. It has this, "mellow" tone to it and that is fine.

One of the problems that I found with this cd is that there were no remix tracks. Most, if not ALL of the songs here are begging to be remixed into hard trance/house/Florida Breakbeats tracks. I know that "Dancing In The Dark" has some dance remixes floating around but the original ballad is one of the best that I have heard in ages, and I do not listen to "slow songs" at all, but this one here, really takes the cake.

I really do not know what else to say. All I know is that I love the cd, she is great artist and I wish her the best. And I heard that her live shows ROCK.

Now that, I would love too see;)

I still flog this album after 2 years........2007-05-31

The testing of a great album is how much you play it in a couple of years and I still play this all the time! I loved Jessy's work with The Mackenzie and her solo stuff is even better. Jessy's time is still comming!

Complete disappointment.......2006-10-23

If you are a 14 year old raver this cd is great and I highly recommend it.
If not, dont waste your money, or time looking for that "one good track", because its not there.

I bought this album because of the great reviews given on amazon. I love vocal trance music but this album just didn't do it for me. It lacks something. The music is not catchy. It's boring and her voice is quite terrible, really terrible.

It's summertime which means new, FAST, music for a good time... I bought this album on a whim, and you have NO idea how ecstatic I was when I listened... Her vocals are crisp and raw, while the bass and music just complement her voice perfectly.

I always thought the "I Wish It Would Rain" album was one of the Tempts' best work.Every song on the album was strong as steel.My favorites were; Cindy, I Could Never Love Another, Please Return Your Love To Me,and He Who Picks A Rose(that's darn near all of the album!).That's my point.The album is solid from beginning to end! "In A Mellow Mood",while a decent effort from the Tempts,was more a commercial album that attempted to capitalize on their crossover appeal.The Tempts do a lot of covers on this one.One of the notable efforts is "Old Man River",with Melvin's resonant bass spearheading the tune.A great addition to any Tempts' fan's collection.

Odd Coupling.......2005-03-28

According to the liner notes, the Temptations line-up for both these albums was David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks and Otis Williams (tenor vocals), Paul Williams (baritone vocal) and Melvin Franklin (bass vocal), but by the time The Temptations Wish It Would Rain had come out in August 1968, David Ruffin had left the group and gone solo to Motown the month before. Dennis Edwards had already taken his place on stage and may be present on some of the more recent of these recordings. Mostly produced by Norman Whitfield, the album was to yield four singles in the US, the UK or both, including the memorable I Wish It Would Rain, the first Motown single to include sound effects and a US Top Five hit. It came out in December 1967, preceding the album by nine months, and appears here at a four-second foreshortened 2.42.

Like its follow up, I Could Never Love Another (After Loving You), also with one of David Ruffin's most heartfelt vocals, the lyric to I Wish It Would Rain was written by Roger Penzabene, who was vividly experiencing the emotions he wrote about in his songs for the Temptations and Gladys Knight and the Pips (End Of Our Road) from this time, and who was to commit suicide before he could benefit from their success.

Former regular producer Smokey Robinson contributes two songs; Cindy, which could easily have been a single had Norman Whitfield allowed it, and the cheerier up-tempo Fan The Flame. Gonna Give Her All The Love I've Got is their version of the song Norman Whitfield had already given Jimmy Ruffin a hit with. He Who Picks A Rose was later covered by the Carstairs and Rare Earth, and by Edwin Starr on the B-side of his hit War. The Henry Cosby-produced I Truly Truly Believe was led by Melvin Franklyn and was an R&B hit in its own right after appearing as the B-side of I Wish It Would Rain. The album closer had a classic Motown sound and groove. No Man Can Love Her Like A Do had a rare composer credit for Eddie Kendricks and was co-written with Norman Whitfield and Motown-mainstay Eddie Holland.

This was to be the last album in the classic Temptations style as the next release debuted their new acid soul sound. This was even more startling given that the album that had preceded this one was a selection of Broadway standards.

Berry Gordy, the label boss, always had one business foot in the more sophisticated (i.e. square) adult (particularly white adult) mainstream market, and a number of his acts found themselves recording live albums at the Talk Of The Town or the Copa, or in the studio for a glitzy collection of jazzed-up standards, and the Temptations were no exception.

In A Mellow Mood is an odd coupling as it was full of show tunes like Hello, Young Lovers (from The King and I), Somewhere (from West Side Story), Try to Remember (from The Fantasticks) (perhaps inspiring Gladys Knight), Who Can I Turn To (from The Roar Of The Greasepaint, The Roar Of The Crowd) and Ol' Man River (from Showboat).

On Ol' Man River, for which Melvin Franklyn sings a bass lead, they wisely use the less racist lyric revision by Paul Robeson, who originally sang it. The Frank Sinatra song book is raided for That's Life, For Once in My Life and The Impossible Dream (the latter from Man Of La Mancha), and Gilbert Bécaud's popular What Now My Love? is aired along with several others.

The oddest track is a reworking of the Holland-Dozier-Holland tune I'm Ready For Love, a hit for Martha and the Vandellas the year before. It retains its traditional bass line and tempo but a jazz element has been added. This sits uncomfortably at first both with memories of the original and with the rest of this album, but becomes addictive after a couple of listens and then seems far too short. The Motown house band does an absolutely fantastic job throughout, showing they can be play in any style with ease, whilst the Temptations show that they are equally adept in the harmony department, though one does wonder what these outings did for their credibility and positioning as spokesmen for the hip radical left

A few more tastes of honey before the grit took over!.......2001-08-16

By the late 1960s, R&B music was changing towards a grittier, more socially conscious sound courtesy of cutting edge artists like Sly & The Family Stone, James Brown & George Clinton (even though he had only released the single "I Wanna Testify" with the Parliaments at the time). While a lot of R&B acts were changing with the times, Motown Records was still a bit set in its ways by 1968. The emphasis was still on music smooth enough to make the pop charts, which it often did. Occasionally, a song or two would reflect the more modernized sound of R&B on a Motown album, but one group had been slowly working towards the rougher sound for a few years by 1968, and they were the Temptations. They had recently enlisted the production team of Norman Whitfield & Barrett Strong after Smokey Robinson quit working with them full-time. Whitfield & Strong's approach to recording was something more rootsy than the polished sound of Smokey. So just when it seemed the Tempts were about to lose their momentum, the new sound was a kick in the pants for them. But before they truly adopted the funkier soul sound on 1969's CLOUD NINE, their previous two albums were still in the smoother vein of their past work, but a few hints of the future were evident.

1968's WISH IT WOULD RAIN was just like any other album from a Motown group, one that basically followed a single or three, with some pleasant filler in between. But this album I think was one of the Tempts lesser-known hits, which is why I'm reviewing it before all the others. The title track opens with a gospel-sounding piano that eventually gives way to the rough-but-honey-sweet vocal of David Ruffin on a song that in fact managed to top the R&B charts and peak at #4 pop. Once again, the high position belies the fact that this song isn't one of the Tempts' better-known classics. Probably because it doesn't get more requests than "My Girl". The album's other two hit singles deserve some attention. "I Could Never Love Another [After Loving You]" contains the stately strings that so defined Motown's golden age, also with another great lead from David Ruffin, who would leave the Tempts shortly after this album. This song topped R&B again, but missed the pop top 10. It's a shame, because it really deserved to do better. But with Ruffin's days numbered in the Tempts, the last hit single from WISH IT WOULD RAIN, "Please Return Your Love To Me", had the boyish falsetto of Eddie Kendricks singing it. Of course, this was one of those good-but-not-great songs, but the fact that it made only #26 pop shows that either radio thought it wasn't a surefire seller, or that Motown thought the same & decided not to promote it vigourously. If you thought Eddie sounded good on "Just My Imagination", his vocal on "Please Return" is not far behind. Elsewhere, the album contains some lesser-known songs that whether or not they're good depends on the listener themselves. But some are notable, however. The Tempts' former producer Smokey Robinson returns to write & produce two great-as-expected songs, "Cindy" & "Fan The Flame". While "Get Ready"'s failure to become a big hit lead to the end of the Tempts' working with Smokey, those two songs prove the old magic hadn't been lost in the meantime. "I Truly, Truly Believe" should be noted for it being sung by Melvin Franklin, the bass voice of the Temptations. Most often, bass singers are relegated to the background, but that song proves Franklin should have been given more leads like this. The only thing wrong with "This Is My Beloved" is that it barely lasts two minutes long & could have paid to be fleshed out a bit more. Finally, the closing "No Man Can Love Her Like I Do" was co-written by Eddie Kendricks, which is strange considering Motown's legendary Svengali-like attitude toward its acts. Most often, the singers sang & the writers wrote, but not necessarily both. A song like this proves maybe there were times when Motown allowed a little more creative freedom for its acts.

All in all, WISH IT WOULD RAIN was a good album from the time when the Tempts were still making music easily palatable by pop music fans as much as soul. With Sly & The Family Stone coming into their own, they probably realized they needed to keep up with the times, so either they or at least Whitfield & Strong decided to steer the Tempts in a more modernized direction from then on. While the music would soon be more ambitious & cutting edge, WISH IT WOULD RAIN is a good last gasp for the smoother brand of R&B that had brought the Temptations their first acclaim.

Eric Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops have done it again. This is a spectacular collection. It makes you feel like getting dressed up with a lot of glitz and glam and going dancing. Though I must admit that Fredrica Von Stade's rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" will definitely touch your heart.

When your brood's in a mood, tell 'em (as Duke Ellington surely would've) it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing. Maria Muldaur's Swingin' in the Rain is just the ticket to perk things up and get those kiddos shuffling off to Buffalo rather than to the time-out corner! With a generous helping of horns, along with guitar, bass, and keyboards, Muldaur puts her sweet and lively spin on swing with revamped renditions of yesteryear's pop. "Aba Daba Honeymoon" is a zingy little number sure to get the gang singing along between giggles and "If I Knew You Were Comin' I'd've Baked a Cake" is pleasantly sassy. "Animal Fair" is a welcome inclusion sandwiched by the nonsensical "Mairzy Doats" and "A Bushel and a Peck," a tune for tuning up the old shuffle-ball-change and waltz-clock combinations. --Paige La Grone

You'll be dancing along with this throwback........2007-05-13

I bought this album for the song "A you're Adorable" and was pleasantly surprised by all of the other songs that I remember hearing as a child ("Jeepers Creepers" and "A Bushel and a Peck"). My daugher always wants me to pick her up to dance when these songs come on our playlist. This CD links today's kids to the former generations with timeless music. This would be a great nostalgic gift to/from a grandparent to enjoy with their grandchild. I don't think Maria Muldaur has the greatest voice, but it's a good voice for kids and I haven't seen too many great compilations like this on one CD. I highly recommend anyone add this to your collection.

Family strengthening experiences through shared enjoyment!.......2006-09-03

I can recall back in the 70's when our daughter was a little girl, watching Sesame Street with her. While the program was clearly targeted at kids, the wit and double-entendre of much of the content made it immensely enjoyable to me as an adult. As a consequence, we watched it together because we BOTH enjoyed it. As a therapist often working with families, I frequently am on the lookout for activities that the parents can do together with the kids - not just because it seems like a good idea to spend time with them, but because they BOTH can really enjoy whatever the activity is. In this way, not only the time is shared - but so is the pleasure; thereby deepening the experience for everyone. This was my Sesame Street experience with my daughter, and I believe that this would be yours if you (as a parent) were to listen to this album of Maria Muldaur's with your school-age children. It is marketed as a children's music CD, but is clearly enjoyable by adults as well!

Maria Muldaur is an interesting character. When I first saw her, it was at a small coffee house in Cambridge, MASS in 1965-66 called the "Club 47." At that time, she was Maria D'Amato and was singing and playing -of all things- the fiddle as the only female member of the Jim Queskin Jug Band. Later she married their (appreciably talented) guitarist, Geoff Muldaur and while their marriage did not endure, she kept the name.
Over the ensuing years, her voice has matured and she has developed into a contemporary bluesy chanteuse - a local icon in Marin County, CA, whose talents came fully to public attention years ago with the production of her now famous tune "Midnight At The Oasis."

This particular album, first produced back in 1998 by "Music For Little People" contains many tunes that my contemporaries will recognize from their own childhoods - done in Maria's trademark warbling bluesy style. The play list includes:

Again, enjoyment for parents and kids TOGETHER!

My children love the songs on this CD. They are older songs that I also love to listen to. We have lots of fun singing and listening to this music together!

Mama... I want to hear SWING!!!!.......2004-09-01

My toddler love, love, LOVES this CD!!!! It's been on (almost) constant rotation since we got it 5 days ago. It's the 1st thing he asks, er, demands to listen to in the morning. Thankfully, the music & singing are top-notch, as are the songs chosen. The songs are cute, sweet, and easy to sing & dance along to. As a former swing dance instructor, it was important to me to find a good CD of swing music for kids with excellent musicianship & one that didn't "water down" the music. This CD is excellent for both adults (a requirement in our household) and children. It's VERY danceable & I foresee many, many hours of dancing the 20's Charleston to this CD.

Maria Mulduar selects great musicians and eclectic, memorable songs as she not only delights kids but we grown ups too, and teaches us Americana through her taste in old time music. If you are old-you'll be reminded of singer Red McKenzie and his Mound City Blowers [Benny Goodmans little group recording under s a different name, or if young you can relate to the Sqirrel Nut Zippers. So...put on your Raccoon coat and get ready to Charleston. 23 Skidoo and cat's meow, vo vo dee oh doe and oh you kid!
