5 out of 5 stars Stellar performance.......2007-07-14

I can't say enough good things about this CD. It has everything that makes SmypnohyX stand out above the crowd....incredible song writing, virtuoso musicianship and unmatched vocals. This has been my favorite SymX CD all the way to Paradise Lost which is totally different but equally as stunning. You won't go wrong buying this CD, it's a classic.

5 out of 5 stars Songs make the Album.......2006-12-07

Following The Divine Wings of Tragedy Symphony X had a hard act to follow. And they did it extremely well. While the album has a similar feeling to their previous albums, they create a new standard. Only their 2002 album The Odyssey came close to replicating their success with this album. The power metal riffs and the wailing guitars somehow blend well enough to create catchy refrains. This is one of the few albums by any heavy metal band that I found myself humming to along in the car even when the album wasn't playing. The tone of the album shifts at various points, and is capped by the exotic "Lady of the Snow" which is a nice cornerstone to the album.

While it is an excellent album overall the songs seem to blend into one another. Each song seems to be produced under the same formula that was perfected in their previous albums. While there are really no standout songs on the whole album, except for the slower "Through the Looking Glass" and "Lady of the Snow" every song tends to blur together. However the strength of the album lies in the overall cohesiveness of the album and not in the individual songs.

The hidden gem in this album is in the singing. While I wouldn't Symphony X as a "singing band", the voice on Twilight in Olympus dovetails the album nicely. Allen's voice is haunting, but never needs to scream, he actually sings his way through this album. Even if you're not a huge heavy metal fan, check out this album, you'll be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Inviting.......2006-09-06

I have 4 Symphony X albums, and I believe I have found their best music. Twilight in Olympus is my least favorite of the 4 (V The New Mythology Suite, The Odyssey, and The Divine Wings of Tragedy being the other 3), but it is still good enough to warrant a 5 star rating. Symphony X makes lots of amazing music. I heartily recommend all 4 titles that I mentioned. They are all very full and rich, and will engage your brain. Very entertaining.

4 out of 5 stars Symphonic band at its best.......2006-02-01

I think that although they had a new drummer in this album it still made a pretty good impact. Russel Allen had one of the best vocal performances I've ever heard in the song "Lady of the snow". It is a good album but far from my favorite. Anyone who appreciates classical music or metal should appreciate this album.

5 out of 5 stars Continued brilliance in power progressive metal.......2005-11-01

THE BAND: Michael Romeo (guitars), Russell Allen (vocals), Thomas Miller (bass), Jason Rullo (drums & Percussion), Mike Pinnella (keyboards).

THE DISC: Released orginally in 1998. 8 tracks clocking in at approximately 53 minutes. Recorded at Trax East Studios in South River, NJ. The new digipak contains digitally mastered sound as well as a screen saver and band interview (from a 2003 session - most of the time spent reflecting on first concerts, touring in Japan and pressure to release albums; says Allen, "We can't pump out 3 chord rock records as quickly as AC/DC." There is an 18-page booklet containing band pictures, lyrics, song credits and thank you's. This is the band's 4th major release. Label - Inside Out Music.

COMMENTS: This was the 2nd disc in my collection from this progressive/power/metal New Jersey band. In my collection, I rank "Olympus" 3rd behind "V-The New Mythology Suite" and "The Divine Wings Of Tragedy". Since their self-titled release and their sophmore effort ("The Damnation Game"), I feel Symphony X has come a long way. Their first two albums were average at best (average song writing and below average production). Something happened when lead singer Russell Allen came on board. The band really showed their chops with their 3rd release (1997) "Divine Wings Of Tragedy"... and they continued with "Olympus". Songs thrust you into a perilous new world of rock music filled with magic, power, the Gods, dreams and destiny. In my opinion, Symphony X ranks as one of the top heavy progressive rock music acts out there. It truly escapes me why Symphony X receives little or no air play, little or no promotion, and limited touring (at least in the southwest). The band has a huge following in Europe and Japan. Romeo's blistering work on the guitar is high quality stuff (Yngwie Malmsteen would be proud) and he has very few equals. Russell Allen's voice is beautiful - and he's a singer, not a screamer or growler. Miller, Rullo and Pinnella are all equally talented on their instruments. Some great songs in the 9 minute "Church Of The Machine", my favorite up and down 13 minute "Through The Looking Glass (Parts I-III), and the wonderful power ballad to close the disc "Lady Of The Snow". Check out their website at www.symphonyx.com ... Great disc.

4 out of 5 stars better than expected .......2005-02-20

Before this album, I had never bought a String Quartet tribute album and tended to overlook them as I normally do with tribute albums. I had been familiar with them through their full album tribute of Radiohead's OK Computer which I've heard and was very impressed by. However I still never bought anything by them as from observation they seemed to pay tribute to both some of the best artists in this generation (The Smiths, The Cure, Radiohead, Sonic Youth, and Elliott Smith for example), yet also some of the worst (Simple Plan, Godsmack, P.O.D., Linkin Park, etc. etc. etc.) and that made me feel less able to judge them as a whole.

However when I saw this album in a store how the Pixies being my favorite band, I bought it without giving it a second's thought and I listened to it immeditely when I got home. After my initial listen I found the album to be very interesting and enjoyable. The songs they selected (mostly from Surfer Rosa and Doolittle) are for the majority all are the best known Pixies songs that you'd find on either on of the best of compilations or hear at one of the reunion shows. The only expection to that is the presence of "Bird Dream of the Olympus Mons" from Trompe le Monde which will stick out jarringly in the track listing to any non casual listener of the Pixies. However, it transforms very well into a classical piece and I would include it along with "Debaser", "Where is My Mind?", and "Velouria" as the best covers on the album.

On the opposite, this album does have it's share of negatives, and it's unfortunate that most of them are from sloppy errors not within the music, but on the packaging. First off the track listing displayed on the back cover and 2 times in the booklet is wrong. I assume this has to do with a last minute change to the track listing after the packaging has been printed. Whatever the case may be (being too cheap to reprint it?), this error is very unprofessional. Also on the back cover the album description states "as virtuous string players cut to the edgy essence of 'Bone Machine'" when Bone Machine isn't even on the album. Besides those frusturating unforgivable errors, my only complaint musically is that the original track by the quartet on this album "Burned for Good" while good in it's own right simply doesn't fit in here and lessens the feeling of the album as a whole. These "original compositions" appear to be on every quartet release, so I guess it's just something that the band enjoys to do regardless of the result. Another semi-complaint is that there isn't more songs from albums besides Surfer Rosa and Doolittle or songs that are lesser known but favorites of devoted fans. "Levitate Me" would have been great in my opinion in this classical form. As well as "Is She Weird?", "No. 13 Baby", and "Into the White". So in summary I say that no matter if you're a new or casual Pixies fan whom the Wave of Mutilation compilation was your first Pixies release, or a hardcore Pixies fan and you don't completely hate classical music, I think you will enjoy this album.

Here's the correct track listing...
1. Here Comes Your Man [Doolittle]
2. Gigantic [Surfer Rosa]
3. Caribou [Come on Pilgrim]
4. Debaser [Doolittle]
5. Cactus [Surfer Rosa]
6. Velouria [Bossanova]
7. Gouge Away [Doolittle]
8. Bird Dream of the Olympus Mons [Trompe le Monde]
9. Wave of Mutilation [Doolittle]
10. Monkey Gone to Heaven [Doolittle]
11. Where is my Mind? [Surfer Rosa]
12. Burned for Good (original composition)

5 out of 5 stars Malfunkshun Rocks.......2007-05-13

If you are into Pearl Jam, Nirvana, SG, AIC, etc...you should seriously consider this CD. Malfunkshun was one of the bands that helped really define the "Seattle" sound along with the UMEN and Green River. From the ashes of Malfunkshun came Mother Love Bone and Then Pearl Jam. Love this CD

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST "LOST" ALBUMS EVER.......2006-06-22

Wood's vocals are flat out incredible on this record. I dont think there are 3 songs in a row better than " until the ocean, wanna be your daddy, and winter bites on very many records. Its a little harder to get through the songs 3-6 though. Your not getting the powerful ballads like Wood later did with M.L.B. such as Chloe Dancer or Man of Golden Words. However his voice seems more powerful here. His brother can hit you with some sweet change of pace riffs and great solo's on winter bites. Well worth the purchase.

1 out of 5 stars What a bleeping shame!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-11-09

This album and others like it are the reason people make fun of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. I really got into MLB and considering I don't like most Seattle music. MLB is one of my favorite bands. Now this disc is atrocious. This is the kind of production that should have been left on the cassete after it was recorded in the garage. Tucked away and hidden in the closet.
I have tried and tried to make it through this disc for nearly twenty years. I just can't do it. I have tripped over my guitar in the middle of the night and heard better playing. This is the true definition of Cacophony. Junk. And since when does putting white poweder all over your face, sticking your tongue out and grinning like you have popsickle up your but make you cool. Horrid. I have thousands of Disc's I MEAN thousands. Unless you listen to crap like boy bands and such. This is the worst album that ever graced the face of the planet. It says FAG all over it. I cannot find anything creative about. I am only giving it one star because the site won't let me rate it any lower.

2 out of 5 stars Recorded too late.......2005-08-26

When it comes to Malfunkshun, the earlier the material the better. Their tracks on the Deep Six compilation album (circa 1985) were very cool; sounded like T Rex meets Discharge. But this later stuff... this sounds like "random glam band" meets "suck." Still much better than anything Mother Love Bone ever did, though. I saw a track listing somewhere that seemed to indicate that there were over 20 tracks on this disk, but apparently this version only has these 13. These 13 aren't worth it, but there maybe an expanded version with the older stuff tacked on.

1 out of 5 stars Good CD for your collection...BUT DON'T LISTEN TO IT!.......2004-05-26

This is really an awful bunch of songs, but I'm still glad Stone Gossard's Loosegroove label went to the effort to release it. What you have here is early Andrew Wood, showing a little bit of the future genius that would be fully realized in Mother Love Bone (especially on "Apple"). I think what drags this disc down the most is Kevin Wood's guitar "playing". No, the songs aren't quite there either, but the Metal Method school of guitar playing (Lesson 1) is really terrible. All that aside, if you're a true Andy Wood fan, you've GOT to have this CD to complete the collection.

1 out of 5 stars dream theater wannabe's.......2005-04-09

Dream theater is a hard act to follow and Syphony X is doing their best.Musianship is more than great, but feeling is not coming to them as naturally as it does to DT.We all loved Malmsteen when he burst onto the scene with FBTS,but not much has changed since then, other than vocalists.Symphony X is heading in the same direction if they don,t broaden into more atmospheric horizons.Listen to some Pink Floyd guys for christ,s sake.

5 out of 5 stars Diversity!!.......2004-02-14

I just wrote a review in which I gave 3 stars to V because of one thing: Although each individual song is amazing, V seriously lacks diversity because all its songs sound the same. TiO is quite the opposite. While not as heavy as V, DWOT, or The Odyssey, it's diversity and variety is what makes this album my favourite (I have them all, of course). The composition and musicianship are astounding and it is their most solid album. Church of the Machine, Orion, and Through the Looking Glass are wicked pieces. I believe too much credit is given to their other albums because this is truly a masterpiece. (The others are great too...) But what's with the boring cover art???

5 out of 5 stars Good Prog.......2001-11-22

I have most of the CDs of this band, but I would say that this one is by far their most superior with the track "The Church Of The Machine" a standout for me.

For Prog to hold a listener's interest ( with its tendency to long songs ), tracks have to be tuneful and melodic. For me this is by far the most melodic CD from Symphony X. 'V - The Mythology Suite' ( their last CD ), being the one that suffers most from meandering twiddly-ness and lack of tunes.

But check out this CD ( 'Twilight In Olympus' ), I am sure you will find something to like and sing along to.

4 out of 5 stars A very good album.......2001-11-19

The four stars are because this album, although it is very good, it is not a masterpiece. Church of the machine, through the looking glass, the relic and lady of the snow are really masterpieces, but orion the hunter really is a let-down. it is still a good song, but not a Symphony X good song. Despite that, the album is great. Michael Romeo's guitars are excellent (specially the relic), Mike Pinniella's keyboards are awesome and Russell Allen's voice is just great. Thomas walling's drums are not as good as Jason Rullo's, but still good. Thomas Miller's bass I haven't heard very much, because I'm not into bass guitars, but the other Symphony X albums have great bass. Get it if you can!

5 out of 5 stars Another masterpiece from the best band around.......2001-08-25

Symphony X is my favorite band...period. No other band combines mind boggling technical ability with absolutely awe-inspiring songwriting. From the fast and furious Dragon's Den to the epic composition Through the Looking Glass, Symphony X has no equal. This cd continues the high standard set by The Divine Wings of Tragedy. The only slight drop off is in the drumming...Jason Rullo is missed. The new drummer is quite good...he can play fast and handle the intricate rhythms, but he doesn't quite have the power of Rullo. The rest of the band has remained the same. Russell Allen turns in another epic vocal performance while Michael Pinnela continues to show that he is not only one of the most technically proficient keyboard players out there, but also one of the most exquisite with phenomenal yet tasteful solos. Michael Romeo IMHO is the best guitarist around right now. His rhythms are incredible, and his solo playing makes other shred guys look silly. Thomas Miller does not do a lot of solos, but his bass playing is very audible, and he is definitely a virtuoso on the instrument. There is absolutely no filler material here, but I would say Church of the Machine, Dragon's Den, Looking Glass, and Orion are at the top.

5 out of 5 stars THE HAPPIEST MUSICAL THIS SIDE OF HEAVEN . . . . . .......2006-08-14

This one is a hoot!

Don't ask me to explain the plot of OLYMPUS ON MY MIND, for as some character in some show once said, "It defies description." Barry Harman (book and lyrics for ROMANCE, ROMANCE) received Drama Desk Award nominations for Outstanding Direction of a Musical and for Outstanding Book, "suggested" by Heinrich von Kleist's play of 1807, "Amphitryon," which may or may not have been "suggested" by Moliere's earlier version of the Greek myth. (The plot is as complicated and as convoluted as the previous sentence.) At any rate, Jupiter lusts after the beautiful mortal Alcmene and poses as her husband, Amphitryon, in order to seduce her. Mistaken identities abound and double-entendres fly freely, aided and abetted by Harman's witty and literate lyrics and Grant Sturiale's ". . . bubbly score, which suggests Rodgers and Hart with a pop-rock undertow." (Stephen Holden, in his review of the 1986 Original Off-Broadway Production) When Amphityron arrives home from the war, not knowing that Jupiter has just spent the night with his wife, Alcmene sings "Back So Soon?" and then proceeds to tell him in great detail how "Wonderful" he was last night, rather like poetry, ". . . especially the fourth and the seventeenth time." The slave, Sosia, having been barred from his own house and bed by Hercules, in the guise of Sosia, declares to his master,""It Was Me." And Delores only needs the mention of a constellation to break into "A Star Is Born" big production number. "Big" being relative, considering the size of the cast. Great fun.

(Holden) "From its firecracker-like opening number, 'Welcome to Greece,' in which a smirking Greek chorus of three men - 'Tom, Dick and Horace' - and a doll-faced, out-of-step chorus girl, 'Delores,' arrive to set the scene, the new musical OLYMPUS ON MY MIND percolates with an old-fashioned sense of naughty musical-comedy fun. Delores's ineptitude, it turns out, is part of the merriment. Periodically throughout the evening, she models the wares of the show's fictional producer, Murray the Furrier, whose name glows in lights at the rear of the stage." Opening night saw the marvelous Ron Raines (LEADING MEN DON'T DANCE) in the dual roles of Jupiter & Amphitryon, Emily Zacharias as Alcmene, Jason Graae as Hercules, Peggy Hewett as Charis, Lewis J. Stadlen as Sosia, and Faith Prince as Delores. By the time the recording was made in October, 1987, the equally marvelous Martin Vidnovic (Tony Nominee, 1981, BRIGADOON; 1984 Drama Desk Award Winner for BABY) was Jupiter/Amphitryon; Susan Powell, his wife; Nancy Johnson, Charis; Frank Kopyc, Sosia; and Joyce De Witt ("Three's Company"), Delores. Only Jason Graae remains from the opening night cast.

David Abers of the Bristol Riverside Theatre calls OLYMPUS ON MY MIND "the happiest musical this side of heaven," and he may well be right. Hal Serra's wonderful "stringless" orchestrations and the small cast of 10 make the show an excellent choice for community theaters and small colleges. I can't imagine anyone, except for the very prudish, not having a great time on OLYMPUS.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A CD to be Heard.......2000-06-24

To be honest, I purchased this thinking that many tracks would be the same as on the main albums, Track 4 is my favourite, catching a dark eastern atmosphere, followed by Black Elk. There are some tracks which don't quite hack it like track 2, sounding like an Arabic budget fairy tale series theme. It's all orientated to middle eastern new age, as you would expect, with spot-on cover art. A good mix of tracks are here giving a 'different' atmosphere - definately one for fans of new age or for unusual backing music. Some of these tracks could have easily been used in films like 'The Mummy'.

4 out of 5 stars All Hail the Symphony.......2005-02-26

I only want to rate this one and Mythology Suite because these are their definitive releases , in opinion. Twilight has beautiful melodies wonderful arrangements and fantastic singing.
This proves that metal is not just about playing fast and singing about death and destruction. Metal can be thought- provocative.I believe that the creators of meatal( Sabbath)
were very intellectual in their topics in that at the time, all were talking about love and peace they wanted to do something different. Symphony X also wants to do the same.

2nd best release from these guys, Mythology suite comes in at first because of it's completeness and Twilight has some weak point and that is why I give it 4 shining stars

5 out of 5 stars Heaven to my ears!.......2003-11-05

I have every Symphony X album. As another reveiwer stated, this album is just as good as any of the others are far as the songs go. The production is not quite as sharp as Divine..V...and Odyssey, but the songs are awesome. Michael Romeo shows that he is world class player. Check out his amazing solos on Smoke and Mirrors, Church of the Machine, and Dragon's Den. His playing is incredibly clean. I still do not see the similarity with Malmsteen. Romeo plays with a lot more emotion and is more melodic, plus he does a lot more sweeping and tapping than Yngwie, and their tone is nothing alike. There are a lot of classical influences on this album, which gives it a more power than prog feel. But there are still plenty of time changes to keep you on your toes. Each song is supreme, but Smoke and Mirrors, Church of the Machine, Into the Dragon's Den, and Orion- The Hunter are my favorites. This album is beloved to all true Symphony X fans. This album is a good choice after your hear V, Divine, and Odyssey. You won't be dissappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Good.......2003-10-22

Some great riffs on this one, Smoke And Mirrors and The Relic have KILLER riffs, great, very creative.

4 out of 5 stars killer!.......2003-09-17

Just in case you didn't quite realize that Michael Romeo is the best electric guitar player, he lets you know right from the get-go. Symphony X are a fantastic band but they are occasionally guilty of repeating themselves; thus, if you've heard the other Symphony X albums, you already have a pretty good idea of what this one sounds like. The production is not quite as thick as it was on Divine Wings but the material is just as good as anything they've ever done. It's a shame drummer Jason Rullo isn't on this; he's one of my favorite skinsmen in metal. Everyone in the band is in top form; but this is particularly an electric guitarists' romp in heavy metal heaven. I like it better than V myself, but not quite as much as The Odyssey.

4 out of 5 stars A good disk, but V and Wings stronger.......2002-09-24

After having worn the gooves (?) off my CDs of V and Divine Wings of Tragedy, I decided to try another SymX. This one is also quite good, though not as stunning as either of the other ones. Church of the Machine is very strong, though, with lots of church-organ-y keyboards, and some unexpected twists and turns.

So if you have V and Wings, go for Twilight, otherwise, what are you wating for, get the other two!

2 out of 5 stars Historical document for 90s Seattle scene fans........2005-05-31

Probably more valuable from a historical perspective than anything else, Malfunkshun was one of the early bands in the Seattle scene that gave birth to grunge music. Featuring the late vocalist Andrew Wood (legendary for his place as the vocalist of Mother Love Bone, featuring future Pearl Jam members Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament, and subject of the tribute Temple of the Dog project, the band played a sort of post-glam/grunge sound-- closer in line with Queen than anything else, the band's hard rock songs revolve around the strength of Wood's wide-ranged tenor and brother Kevin Wood's metal-styled guitar playing (with more in common with Eddie Van Halen than anything in the later grunge scene).

Like many legendary bands, its not quite as great as one would hope-- Wood was clearly a talented singer and the music is decent enough, but the execution is rather poor. Add to this somewhat degraded sound, and you've got something thats really not entirely listenable. On the other hand, this is a collection of demos, not an "album" per se, so this is probably not a big surprise. One wonders had the band kept going what they would have produced (or for that matter had a producer been around to inject some more taste into the music and soloing). There's some decent material here (the theatrical rock of "My Only Fan", melodramatic and brilliant piano ballad "Until the Ocean" and grungey "I Wanna Be Your Daddy" come to mind), this is largely unessential.

4 out of 5 stars A must have album for every 'Seattle Sound' fans.......2001-06-28

This album is a great record! This is the ONLY Malfunkshun album ever recorded. Every recording on this album are pretty much like "early" Mother Love Bone demos. This record is also pre-Devilhead and pre-Satchel. This is way before Pearl Jam existed. Track 6 is the live version of Ted Nugent's "Wang Dang Sweet Poontang". The bonus track on this album which is Track 33 is the live version of "With Yo' Heart, Not Yo' Hands". Tracks 13 through 32 are just that "annoying" blank CD like the Nine Inch Nails 'Broken' EP. I highly recommend this album to every Pearl Jam fans, old or new. Every Pearl Jam fans MUST have this album even if it may be difficult to find. It's worth the hunt though.

5 out of 5 stars Return To Olympus is a great album.......2000-02-22

If you like Andrew Wood and Mother Love Bone, you'll love this album. This album is a classic!

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular roots of the Seattle sound!.......1999-12-27

If you want to hear the band that spawned the 'Seattle sound', you can't get much better than this. It's pre-Mother Love Bone...pure, unbridled L'Andrew at his early best. Don't miss this one, a MUST HAVE for Mother Love Bone fans.

5 out of 5 stars You shouldn't miss it!.......1999-09-23

Well, Seattle, Mother Love Bone, Seattle, Andrew Wood, Seattle... it's enough, I think. You shouldn't miss this CD, it's a cult.
