Celestial Navigations, Chapter V, The Connection.......2006-08-02

If you are a Celestial Navigations fan you will enjoy Chapter V.

CN's best album since Chapter III.......2006-07-22

I've been a Celestial Navigations fan since 1989. The huge delay between the release of Chapter IV and this album, had almost caused me to believe that Chapter V would never surface. Thankfully, that fear was unfounded, and I thought Chapter V to be the best CN release since Chapter III.

One thing that differentiates Chapter V from almost all the rest, is the backing music. Mr. Lewis's signature voice is in solid, if somewhat elderly form, but the music is largely cinematic in quality, with string orchestration and other additions which show how far CN's production ambitions have come since the synthesizer-laden classic, Chapter I.

Which is not to say that synth never appears on this album. "Arranger 5" is both amusing and classic, in that it features Mr. Lewis' quirky wit and nothing BUT synthesizer. But other tracks, such as "Sub and the Bull" and "Letters from the Revolution" feature backing music that seems to be pure orchestra; and much appreciated pure orchestra at that.

As with previous CN albums, Lewis is not pulling any punches, in terms of loving the American Experiment or infusing tracks like "Santa" with an honest adoration for Jesus Christ. Far from New Age, Chapter V is more like a return to the country age, when neighbors sat with neighbors on the front porch, communities pulled toghether for the good of the community, and one could place his hand over his heart and recite the Pledge without being accused of warmongerism, jingoism, nationalism, or any of the other tired -isms.

Touching, thought-provoking, Chapter V is thoroughly in the spirit of the previous four albums, and all I could say after hearing this one is, "I can't wait for Chapter VI!"

Review - Celestial Navigations.......2006-02-01

Just as with their other albums, CN hits the spot with their newest offering. I know of no other spoken word albums with such vivid and descriptive passages.

The fourth album lives up to its previous ones. Absoulutly fantastic! Its blend of storytelling and music never cease to amaze me. I have all the Celestial Navigations stories on tape and now wish to obtain them on CD. They can be listened to over and over and never grow tired of how each story is woven together. My favorite ones were "The Sniper", "Home" and "The Window". It is in the best interests of everyone that these stories and the others before them be made available again. I have loved Geoffery Lewis and his stories since watching them on the Smother Brothers Show. I have worn out and given away my past tapes and CDs. I have used the stories to illustrate stress management to micro management. Celestial navagations are the best stories, for adults, I have ever come across.

This is an experience of storytelling beyond any I have heard...and I have heard in excess of a hundred storytellers. The versatility of the artist is uncanny with the different kinds of story lines and character portrayals. And for anyone with a metaphysical, spiritual, or mystical orientation, there is plenty of material along those lines as well. Mr Lewis takes the listener from the common everyday experience of a vietnam vet to the passion and heat of the chance meeting of lovers, to the heartwarming friendship of two strangers on a train, and on to the mystical realms. He is absolutely amazing. He touches a place inside me that I have longed to find in the storytelling experience. To have the variety of musical accompaniments as background for the stories is an ingenious idea and only serves to further enhance the depth and breadth of the listener's experience. Whatever circumstance that brought you to this page is a fine example of fate working its magic. Celestial Navigations is, without a doubt, one of the greatest experiences that you will ever have in your life. Buy this CD, lie down, turn off the lights, and be amazed at the places and emotions it will take you to. I have introduced Celestial Navigations to almost every person I know, and 100% have been affected in some way or fashion. I don't know how to adequately describe their mix of storytelling, music, and effects. But I do know that you will be blown away by the compelling stories they weave.

Celestial Navigations III - Ice will warm you up!.......2003-06-03

Being a fan of Celtic music, one day I wandered through the local B&N (sorry Amazon) and found this treasure hidden between utterly mediocre music. I took it home, slipped it into the CD Player and was immediately dismayed because it was storytelling. I nearly changed it into a coaster for my nightcap, but was disuaded by an act of caprice.
Six months later I was in my apartment looking at some moderately boring work that needed doing, and wondering how I was going to survive it when my roving eye caught this disk sticking out of the pile of unused CDs in the corner. For the fun of it, I put it on.
It didn't take long for me to realize what an error I had made half a year ago. The haunting title track takes your breath away. The Back Porch will tighten most throats with its beauty and simplicity. The bonus track (be warned) is randy, but hilarious. The prude in me (and I am quite the prude) couldn't decide whether to blush or belly-laugh. In between these three tracks are stories that will tickle your fancy, touch your heart, or stroke your funny bone. To be sure, I described this album to my boss as one performed by "Libertarian Rednecks." Whatever. Regardless, you will enjoy this marvelous treat. Pick it up today!

affected for life!!.......2001-12-30

This is something a friend played for me on a tape in 1993.. I haven't heard it since then until now however, this work actually affected my life profoundly..How many times can you say that about a story? Thank god for the internet or I would have never found it again. The story "Back Porch" has inspired me through many "moments" of my life. The "Intervention" is so visual and humorous, It's very much like having a movie in your head..The music, especially in the last cut, is moving and brings these stories to life in a way that emerses me into the world in the story and never fully lets go!!

A great collection of stories.......2001-01-31

Celestial Navigations: ICE Chapter III is a great collection of stories....which continues the rich tradition of the first two installments. The fusion of music and story-telling is in top form on this CD. War Babies, Rock and Roll are great tracks...the narratives and music paint a great picture...perfect for listening on a long commute....The track ICE is haunting.... the music and script will transport you to a bleak and forbidding place.....don't be suprised if you get a chill listening to this track....

I thought this was going to be more new age along the lines of ENIGMA, Steven Halpern, or Merlin's Magic. Imagine my disappointment when I learned "Celestial Navigations" were cowboy/trucker stories. Monotone speech with barely discernable backround music.

Very, Very, Unique.......2000-12-13

I first heard a cut from this album in 1989. I bought the cassette a few months later and then lost it.It took me 11 years to get another! Listening to this album is a great way to relax. Just put your feet up, and place yourself in the stories that are being told. Guaranteed to make you think, whether it's happy or sad!!!

You may be in luck.......2002-09-24

I agree with the adulation by other reviewers. I have the first three CDs and wouldn't part with them. There may be help for others trying to find these CDs, however. Celestial Navigations does have a web site, (www.celestialnavigations.com) where they list all CDs as being available. And you won't be price-gouged by dealers selling used copies. Good luck!
UPDATE - 1/30/2005: Checked out the website for Celestial Navigations the other day. They now have CD "packages" that group the entire series together at a discounted price. Essentially, the per-CD price drops to $12. Well worth it to buy directly from the source instead of greedy Marketplace sellers. In addition, all four of the titles are available, as well as a live CD, which I haven't ordered yet, but will.
