5 out of 5 stars Garage-rocking brilliance from SoCal!.......2007-06-23

Released after two somewhat dissapointing volumes that focused on the Chicago garage rock scene, the 8th CD installment of the Pebbles series is a welcome return to form. Gone are the mediocre, uninteresting, and occasionally flat-out awful songs that marred the two previous discs-this album is crammed full of fun, exciting, and ultra-obscure mid-60s rockers from Southern California.

Some of these songs are among the best garage rock records ever. The Dovers' "She's Not Just Anybody" should have (and could have) been a chart-topping smash. It is, simply put, a masterpiece, a haunting, emotional burst of chiming guitars and dreamy vocals, bolstered by a relentless river of percussion. The Starfires' tense, throbbing "I Never Loved Her" is almost as good. Same goes for "She Needs Me," a hypnotic fuzz rocker courtesy of the Grains of Sand. The Rumors' "Hold Me Now" is positively anthemic, thanks to its rousing, "Louie Louie"-inspired melody and exuberent vocals. The Cindermen's "Don't Do It Some More" is a relentlessly catchy twist rocker that features a wonderfully off-the-wall guitar solo. Terry Randall's "S.O.S." is a spooky, paranoid protest tune with a subtle, smoldering lead vocal and a churning rhythm. The Gigolos' "She's My Baby" is a storming, double-time punk-rocker with a strong rockabilly influence, and the Humane Society's "Knock Knock" is a fiery, snarling tune with some thorny guitars. The Cloudwalkers' "Sunglasses" is insanely cool, and the Bush provide a fantastic version of "Got Love if You Want It" that features some compact but explosive rave-up sections. The Green Beans' "Who Needs You" is every bit as sneeringly sarcastic as its title suggests, and The Beckett Quintet's "No Correspondence" is a quietly insane bouncer with an anthemic chorus. The Caretakers of Deception close out the album with driving "X+Y=13."

The afformentioned tunes are only a few of the highlights of this spectacular disc, one of the finest entries in the entire Pebbles series. Your garage collection isn't complete without this one.

5 out of 5 stars Yet another compilation of undeservedly obscure rock howlers.......2004-06-06

The PEBBLES series, which doesn't really pick up speed until Vol. 7 (CHICAGO VOL. 2, which Amazon doesn't carry for some reason but is essential listening), continues with SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, gathering together rare 45 singles and acetates of garage bands and high school rock groups from Sacramento to San Diego, with plenty of small towns hit in-between. 2 of the songs, "Knock Knock" by The Humane Society (without a doubt one of the best unheard songs of the 60s) and "Hold Me Now" by The Rumors (which I dare you not to rock out to), are included on the NUGGETS boxed set, but they're surrounded by so many amazing gems here that this volume simply cannot be passed over.

Terry Randall's anti-riot anthem "S.O.S." kicks off the album with a bang; this is one dark little mother of a single, half-sung, half-spoken by an unknown artist. Of the 25 songs, the highlights are: The Starfires' "I Never Loved Her", The Grains of Sand's "She Needs Me", The Cindermen's "Don't Do It Some More", The Colony's "All I Want", The Cloudwalkers' "Sunglasses", The Beckett Quintet's "No Correspondence", The Dovers' "She's Not Just Anybody", Sean and the Brandywines' "She Ain't No Good", The Rogues' "Wanted: Dead or Alive" (the guitar work is very similar to that of "Hey Joe"), The Last Word's "Sleepy Hollow", The Green Beans' "Who Needs You", Limey and the Yanks' "Guaranteed Love" and "Out of Sight, Out of Mind" (a cover of a terrific single by New York City's Bit-A-Sweet, which has never been available reissued) are all singles which should have been national hits, blowing anything by The Dave Clark Five or Herman's Hermits out of the water. Not every song is a bonafide classic, but they're all sterling examples of what makes 60s garage rock a highly sought-after subgenre of classic rock.

4 out of 5 stars Made us all want to move to California.......2007-07-29

I bought one of the first copies of the album at the behest of drummer Paul Dennert's father, a fabulous man who sadly had become nearly totally paralyzed. He found joy in this band and told me they were going to "be big." We in South Bend knew the Buick Riviera with Illinois plates was sitting on a Lake Michigan beach, but we still wanted to believe. I did make it to living on the California beach for part of the next decade. Sadly, I lost that Rivieras album along with my whole record collection to Hurricane Alicia that hit Galveston in 1983. Most were scratched and beer soaked by then anyway. I have replaced some over the years by scouring used record stores and now, the internet. The problem is I find I don't listen to them and one needs to assess the value of nostalgia. The Rivieras did represent an era of innocence and abandon just before our nation plunged into the darkness of racial strife and war. It was to be two more years before I smelled my first marijuana smoke. Surf music by then was being replaced by acid rock.

If You want to hear the Rivieras, the lead singer Marty Fortson still sings that song and many others to this day in South Bend, Indiana. Only now, Fortson has his own band called the "Wildcats." Still the same old Riviera fun, along with some of the original members joining him from time to time. Just some good ol fun time rock and roll.

3 out of 5 stars Lost in the California sun.......2001-06-25

Not the 50s R'n'B group but the Indiana(!) rock band that took the "California Sun" into the top 5 in the 60s. While titled "Best Of...", this CD is actually a two-fer of their two albums with some 45 versions substituted for the album versions. While the grinding organ and hyperenergy of "California Sun" are maintained through most of the tunes (even unlikely ones such as "Danny Boy"), they were never able to capitalize on the success of "Cal-Sun". Instrumentally, they are a progression of the early 60's Johnny and the Hurricanes' sound. Except for scraping the bottom of the charts with a few follow-up singles, they disappeared from the national spotlight, relegated basically to one-hit wonder status. With the freshness of "California Sun" exhausted, and without unique new material, their promising sound couldn't be sustained in the pop charts. Sound quality is reasonably good with all tracks in mono. Includes a comprehensive history of the band in a 12-page booklet. A welcome release by the small indie Norton Records.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars More shiny rocks from SoCal!.......2007-07-12

Even though its not quite as good as its predecessor, the second volume of the Pebbles series to focus on ultra-obscure sixties garage rock from Southern California is still a smokin' collection of tunes, stuffed with mean fuzz guitars and primal vocals, courtesy of a whole buncha bands that just never managed to make it big. A few songs that make this disc a blast o' joy are Ty Wagner's "I'm a No Count," a nasty two-chord outcast anthem that bristles with teenage agression, as well as Thee In Set's stomping caveman frat pounder, "They Say." There's also "Someday You'll Cry," a snotty garage-pop tune from the pre-"Dirty Water" Standells, and the Care Takers' funky soul-shakin' cover of Bob Seger's "East Side Story" (shut up, Bob Seger rules!), not to mention the Velvet Illusions' menacing "Velvet Illusions" (gotta love bands with their own theme songs). The Children of the Mushroom's "August Madamoiselle" is a psychedelic tune that manages to pull of the neat trick of being both dark and whimsical. Great stuff. The David's "I'm Not Alone" is a fuzzy, flailing, organ-propelled fuzz thumper and the Second Helping's "Let Me In" is just plain wonderfully creepy. There are plenty of other highlights (don't even get me started on the W.C. Fields Memorial String Band!), but this set falls a bit short of the five star rating, thanks to the inclusion of a few tunes that are little more than by-the-book garage rock (I'm lookin' at you, "Won't Come Down!"). Still, this is an excellent disc, a really good addition to the Pebbles series, and it deserves to belong in every garage fan's collection.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as VOL. 1, but still has plenty of rockin' tunes.......2004-06-06

The follow-up to PEBBLES VOL. 8: SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA isn't as jam-packed with classic garage soul-smashers as its predecessor, but still has several good songs I'm glad have been released somewhere! Highlights you'll find yourself loving: Ty Wagner's "I'm a No Count", The Caretakers' "East Side Story", The Standells' "Someday You'll Cry", The Magic Mushrooms' "I'm Gone" (yeah, believe it or not, they recorded something else after "It's A-Happening"!), Fenwyck's "IYE", The The Good Feelins' "Shattered", The Gypsy Trips' "Ain't It Hard" (the Electric Prunes' version is better, though), The Nervous Breakdowns' "I Dig Your Mind", The W.C. Fields' Memorial Electric String Band's "I'm Not Your Steppin' Stone" (better than The Monkees' more popular version!), The Velvet Illusions' "Velvet Illusions", Children of the Mushrooms' "August Mademoiselle", The Crumpets' "Mama Baby" (which sounds uncannily like The Chocolate Watchband's "Sweet Young Thing"), The Sounds Unreal's "Scene of the Crime", and The Starfires' "Cry for Freedom" (taken from the only surviving acetate!).

There are too many disposable singles here, unfortunately, but don't hesitate to add this to your garage rock collection. It's often better than previous PEBBLES installments in spots, and despite the inclusion of too much psychedelic pap, it's still essential listening.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome Garage Rawk!!!!!.......2002-05-13

I think this was the first Pebbles volume I found (on vinyl)at a record show. It's still my favorite; I also own #'s 1,3,8 & 13.Great tunes especially "I'm Not Trying To Hurt You","Pretty Girl","Show Me The Way" (no not Frampton!!!), and "The Girl I Threw Away".

5 out of 5 stars Mono recording - but better than half of DPs official releases.......2007-02-01

This album was really a pleasant surprise, and has far exceeded any expectations I'd had. It had all the hallmarks of a 'scraping-the-bottom-of-the-barrel' release, but rest-assured this CD is a safe buy that will be played many times by most fans of quality rock. Deep Purple Mk II fans can be assured that there is no ear-grating screaming or yelling of juvenile rock cliches, which ruin so many DP III and IV live performances, this being recorded live in studio. On the other hand, people wanting to get an idea of Tommy Bolin's genius can get a better idea of this than on, dare I say, even his own two solo albums, good as they are. The sound quality is amazingly good too, considering the recording technology and circumstances of the tape's survival. What this CD reveals is that being forced to play DP songs live destroyed the band. They sounded best jamming on their own compositions, not covering earlier incarnations of the band, which stifled Bolin's playing. It would have been a much better idea to have given up the name Deep Purple for a possible later date and given the band a completely different name. Then they could have played they own material, and would have been guaranteed a lot of record and concert ticket sales anyway, as most rock fans would have known who they were. Or perhaps that should have been done after Ian Gillan left? Whatever, Deep Purple Mk IV was a great band which I don't really think of as Deep Purple but appreciate as a good rock band, and better than Mark III, that unlikely compromise between classical and funk. This album might just be the finest legacy of the ill-fated band. Not listed on the CD cover but track 10 on the CD is a light-hearted version of 'I Got You Babe', which breaks down after a verse when the CD ends. I have been tempted to buy the CD '1420 Beachwood Drive', which has another 30mins or so of these sessions, but at over $22 the album's minute/dollar ratio remains unfavourable.

5 out of 5 stars the most relevent of discoveries.......2005-11-14

This is MK IV as they should have been represented years ago: Bolin playing beautifully, and the rest of the band digging it. It is not a state of the art recording, a fact that works in its favour because it gives the listening experience a unique atmosphere. Sweaty, smokey and UP without the polish (that kinda atmosphere).

It's a shame that there isn't more of it, like much more of it. We will never hear the band jamming to a newly written 'Gettin' Tighter' or 'You Keep On Moving'; but what we have here is both a fantastic insight and an incredible recording.

Personally I always consider the MK IV line up as the Deep Purple incarnation with the potential to be the most musically significant today. The fusion of rock with funk is very common now, and the widespread love of herbal lifestyles should make the colours that Tommy Bolin brought to Deep Purple very appealing. Bolin played with an energy that would have been perfectly fused with this band were it not for his escalating drug problems. Although Purple lossed Blackmore's love of exotic scales when he quit the band, Bolin raises the pentatonic stakes drastically (his blues playing is awesome -- taking in scales from the Mississippi Delta right through to Texas).

The band hit astonishing peaks during these improvisations. Coverdale Ad-Libs the line "If you feel like you're drifting on air, don't let your friends stop you thinking you're there." The overall standard of the jams is on a par live recordings of The Who, Zeppelin and the Stones during the golden.

Basically, if you like to hear an exceptionally talented band jam like crazy for an hour or so, you will love this album. Some trip, believe me.

      4 out of 5 stars don't be fool!.......2003-11-12

don't be foolish to switch this cd to another!

this one is a rare MK IV with Bolin on guitar at that time. After Blackmore left the band, everything has changed but the band still played brilliantly! And The whole set are certainly a good songset not a jamset!

4 out of 5 stars oh I love Tommy Bolin really!.......2002-11-06

      Folks!
I'd grown up with the music, deep purple has composed in the middle of 70's. This rehearsal recordings was taped in june 1975 by the engineer Robert Simon. At that time DP was searcing for the new guitar man, after the legendary Ritchie Blackmore left in that same year. The search on Tommy Bolin's name was on. The materials of Deep purple MK IV rehearsal on that day were absolutely rarities, because they have never sung the numbers such as statesborough blues, Last of the long jam, drifter on stage. Tommy Bolin was ahero in this album, his guitar playing is absolutely grander than grander.
Finally in 2000, Robert Simon gave the original tape to the DPAS chief Simon Robinson in the UK.
PS: A must for all deep purple fans & lovers.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Bolin Fans.......2001-09-18

This is a must-have CD for Bolin fans. He plays with the authority we love him for. The performances are a blast to hear, with some real surprises. I can listen to this all day while working as a web designer, just put the player on repeat and I notice new stuff each time. Don't pass this up.

4 out of 5 stars A Must Listen For Groovies Fanatics.......2000-10-30

I can't believe I'm the first here to review this. I've owned it since it was released back in '95. A great compilation of rarities, live stuff , rehearsal recordings, and demos from the more rootsy rockin' original incarnation(prior to the Cyril Jordan led Brit Invasion retro/proto - power pop era) of the band with vocalist Roy Loney. I was so knocked out by this when I first got it that I must have kept it in my CD changer for a month. A good deal of this material is previously unnissued. The booklet is great also, very informative liner notes by Miriam Linna as well as many never before seen photos. This wasn't released yesterday ! Only criticism of the release itself is a few tracks are a little rough in the sound quality department, but hey these are rarities, so who knows where the tapes have been, especially outtakes like a cover of "I Can't Explain", a neat live version of "Buddy Can You Spare A Dime" and a smokin' "Heartbreak Hotel".The Supersnazz radio promo is just icing on the cake. Priceless.
