A Beautiful and Haunting Look at War.......2006-08-25

This is an amazing CD- a glimpse into the personal tragedy of the death (in Iraq) of a young American Marine. The music takes listeners from the final days of Private William Henry, to his loved one's wondering "What do I do now?" We are allowed into his private thoughts and fears, his memories, then his death and journey home. We grieve with his family, and in the end are no closer to understanding why we still send our children off to war. This is not an overtly political CD; it doesn't tell us to impeach the President. It only reminds us of the horrors of war, and the shattered lives it creates. Falling Water River should be listened to by any one who thinks war is an acceptable solution to anything, and those who know better.
An extraordinary and beautifully done CD.

This CD takes an amazing look at the human toll of war. Whereever you are politically really doesn't matter since you can not escape the heartfelt emotion that resonates throughout each and every song. Americana at its finest! BRAVO! Every Switchback album has it's own heart, all worth listening to over and over again.

Sparkling. From the creative detail of the jacket design to the gift of a moving sonnet between tracks 10 and 11, "The Fire That Burns" has a huge amount to offer music lovers everywhere.

On this CD, Switchback's original sound fuses together American, country and many other flavours of music. This is music to sing to and music to dance to. Every time I listen to this CD, I love discovering something new in it. Whatever your musical influences are, "The Fire That Burns" is definitely worth opening your ears to again and again.

Vibrant and energetic through to gentle and sure, these 11 tracks take us on a remarkable musical journey through a whole range of the emotions we all feel at some time in our lives.

Look out for great vocals, amazing electric cello and mandolin playing, gutiars, drums, accordion and much, much more.

Give your ears a treat. Get "The Fire That Burns" and tell your friends about it. They'll love you for it.

True original.......2003-03-14

I generally judge a CD by the length of time it spends in my CD changer. This one's been in there since the night I got it, and I don't see it geting bumped out anytime soon. One of those albums that you can listen to over and over, and never have to listen to a weak track.
I can't really compare it to anything, because it draws from so many influences. Certainly well within the realm of "alternative country". Lots of traditional Irish (the rowdy pub variety). Bluegrass perhaps. Maybe even a touch of pop, but I mean that in a good way... You can dance to it. Mississippi Blues? A little Cajun maybe? You'll hear dueling guitars, accordion, dobro, steel guitar, and an incredible electric cello. The best mandolin playing I can remember. Heck, I don't know what it is. It's just very good, and quite refreshing.
This is a complete album. Well produced and focused. Life, Love, loss, and the stuff that baffles us in between. Get it, and if you figure out what to call it, let me know.

Donald Erb: "Concerto for Contrabassoon and Orchestra" (1984) "The concerto's one movement is divided into three sections, each resembling the corresponding movement in a traditional concerto. The first section is a little march-like in character. In this sense it represents a departure from the conventional concerto. This runs directly into a slow 'Night Music' section that presents the solo instrument in a more lyric light. The melodies played by the contrabassoon frequently contain jazzy bends, and the soloist is also called upon to play in the very high register. The last section makes use of the very lowest register of the instrument, which can sound quite earthy. This earthiness, which at times may even seem funny, is in keeping with the historic nature of the scherzo." D.E. * Marga Richter: "Blackberry Vines and Winter Fruit" (1976): "This piece is a one-movement work in four closely related sections. I have attempted to express the feelings engendered by the lonely beauty of a Vermont winter landscape. The following lines from Thoreau provided an added dimension and also the title."
