A perennial favorite.......2005-07-31
Since I first heard this album in 1994, it's remained as one of the albums that plays as I write, work, and drive. I love the Southwest, and the quiet beauty of the Chaco Canyon area in particular...my wife and I vacation there often. This album provides a taste of the mystery, solitude, and danger that pervades the arid New Mexico landscape. I highly recommend this album.
but it its great.......2005-03-25
you should buy this album because gettels a great guy and a great piano player and hed be really happy to know that you enjoy his music and that he got some money fromm you. and this isnt gettel writing this if youre wondering. but seriously buy it its awesome.
I Don't Know Music, But I Know What I Like.......2002-07-24
I'm one of those people who would select a $500 stereo over a $2000 one. So I've got a lot of nerve writing a review. Okay, so I don't know music and can't tell you about all its nuances, but I know what I like. I like something that I can sing with (not this CD), tap my foot to (often on this CD), allow my mind to wander with (definitely this CD). Unlike a lot of new age kind of stuff (wrong term, I'm sure, but I've already established that I'm not a music expert), this has catchy melodies that kind of inspire your creativity (well, at least I'm a bit creative). It's hummable stuff. You can think to it, or think about it. Not whale sounds. Or discordant (probably another wrong term) notes. The kind of music that people ask, "What's the name of this CD, this music is nice."
Michael Gettel's CDs, The Art of Nature, Places in Time, Intricate Balance, and Return would also get the same review from me. I don't feel the same about the San Juan Suites CDs, though. For a kinda creative-type like me, this music is good for evoking scenes, even emotions in my mind.
Hope this helps you non-experts like me.
A Talented Artist.......2001-05-08
The music of Skywatching relaxing, and enjoyable to listen to. Every song is well composed and allows your imagination to wander. I highly recommend this album, as well as all of Michaels other albums. I had the oppertunity to have Michael Gettel as my music teacher, and have been following his work from the time he first released his first album. Each album he releases continues to get even better than the previous released album! Anyone who passes up the chance to own an album is missing out on music from a very talented artist!
WOW!.......1998-06-13
Michael Gettel is my music teacher, and, wow does he write great music! Recently I went on a two week trip with him to the Southwest, and got to see some of the places that inspired him to write the music for this fabulous CD. My personal favorite is Sipapu. It captures the atmosphere of the Southwest more than any other track. Even If you don't buy this CD, go to a music store and listen to it. I know you won't be dissapointed.

Maybe Pete Droge just isn't for me..........2004-03-15
I've always wanted to get into Pete Droge's music. I think his song "Beautiful Girl" is a great song. I also enjoy The Thorns cd. I also like his song "If You Don't Love Me I'll Kill Myself" from Dumb and Dumber. Also, he has a quick cameo in Almost Famous as Gram Parsons while singing the chorus to "Small Time Blues" that I enjoyed. "Small Time Blues" was enough to make me want to check this cd out and when I read the good fan reviews on Amazon, I went for it.... Wish I hadn't. In my opinion, the music was generic and the lyrics were uninspired. Fans of Pete Droge may really enjoy this disc, but it is not for the casual listener.
Highly recommended disc.......2003-07-24
Pete Droge has finally produced a great album with "Skywatching". While I like his previous albums (though I still don't have "Spacey & Shakin"), none of them are great the whole way through. Droge seems to have learned a bit from working with Stone Gossard on "Bayleaf," as there are definite similarities in some of the vocal lines and delivery here to Stone's solo work ("Hard to Tell You," & "Bring Up the Failure" especially). Overall, the album still isn't a rocker like his album with the Sinners nor "Beautiful Girl," but is a really nice, mellow disc that's not your straight-forward singer/songwriter material. By the way, "Small Time Blues" is just a tremendous song. Anyway, highly recommended to fans of his previous work, Stone Gossard's solo work, or anyone looking for a cool, mellow album. Definitely more staying power and more unique than his album with the Thorns.
Long time coming.......2003-07-20
This is the fourth Pete Droge release, and it is a good one. Well worth the five year wait. Buy the Thorns cd too.
