Editorial Reviews

From the Artist
I was inspired to record this album after being influenced by some of my favourite music artists such as Pink Floyd, Moby, Yanni and Jim Brickman. This album is dedicated to my best friend Stephanie Baker of Burlington, Vermont. This album is something anyone can relate to who needs to break away and get their peace of mind.

Product Description
PEACE OF MIND is an album consisting of great musical instrumentals inspired by several artists such as Yanni, Moby and Pink Floyd and was completely composed, arranged, mixed and produced by DJ Dobbie. Work on this album began in March 2004 and was done completely by computer. DJ Dobbie never stepped foot into the doorway of any recording studio. DJ Dobbie originally released the single "Peace of Mind" in April 2004.The single consisted two versions of "Peace of Mind" (Single Edit and LP Version), "City Streets" as well as a remix of "Peace of Mind". Over 240 copies of this single were sold locally around the West Los Angeles, West Hollywood and Culver City areas as well as over 120 copies to various parts of Massachusetts (where DJ Dobbie is originally from), Vermont, Iowa and Illinois (the three other states where DJ Dobbie was previously a DJ). These 240 copies were sold during the first 4 weeks from the album's release date. The first half of this album (tracks 1-8) features relaxing instrumental music whereas the second half of the album (tracks 9-13) features some club-style dance music. The final track (14) is a closure song featuring melodic piano and rain sounds.

    Album Description

"Transforming the solo piano into an instrument of healing, Steven Halpern's latest CD is a masterpiece of inspired Zen impressionism. It transports you to the place of peace we all seek." -- Leading Edge Review

"Steven Halpern is one of the Top 12 most influential keyboard artists of the last thirty years who changed the way we listen to music." -- Keyboard Magazine

Ideal for meditation, relaxation, and aural pleasure. Sure to please long-term fans and new audiences alike. Includes an "Inner-Peaceful" arrangement of "Amazing Grace." All-new material recorded in audiophile format. Over thirty-five years ago, Steven Halpern began developing a new tonal vocabulary for the piano that allows the higher harmonic overtones to speak as eloquently as the notes themselves. There is spiritually uplifting energy that comes through his music, which many listeners notice immediately. Peace of Mind makes it easy to "get in the gap"--the space between notes and thoughts. Deepak Chopra and Wayne Dyer elegantly describe it as a space of pure potential and connection to the divine. These performances were completely improvised and recoded in one continuous flow that lasted almost two hours. Peace of Mind is a must-have for all Halpern fans, piano lovers, and anyone who seeks to nurture body, mind, and spirit with the healing power of sound. Steven Halpern is an award-wining composer and recording artist whose music has touched the lives of millions. His recordings carry an energy of light, love, and healing, and are heard in leading spas, yoga and massage centers, and homes around the world.

5 out of 5 stars Peace of Mind is a masterpiece!.......2003-12-21

Right after the first two or three times of listening to this album, I was almost ready to weed it out of my collection. After seeing it on used cd racks for years and finally picking up a copy, I figured maybe this album was just a flop. For some reason, though, I kept listening to the cd. Over the past year, I've listened to Peace of Mind many more times than Breathe's brilliant debut All That Jazz. I'm not really sure how Peace of Mind became so habit-forming for me, but I will say this album was a very audacious effort by the group. They certainly took a risk, and it arguably paid off (at least from an artistic viewpoint). Except for "Does she love that man?", which was a lame attempt to have another smash hit power ballad", Peace of Mind is more cohesive and atmospheric than its predecessor. The only track that sounds discontinuous from the rest of the album is the remix of "Say a prayer". Personally, I like the remix better. Besides being almost danceable, the remix is also...... well, mixed better. Maybe it's just me, but I think the vocals could have been mixed better with the instrumentation on the original. Besides "Say a prayer", I think the album was mixed and produced well. Musically, the biggest difference was more bluesy lead guitar work, and less horns. That aspect first annoyed me, but the guitar work really enhances the songs. The biggest commonality with both Breathe albums is David Glasper's outstanding vocals. Glasper extends himself even more on Peace of Mind, singing each song with passion and conviction. Peace of Mind has some hidden classics, too, such as "Say hello" and "Without your love". "Woman" and "Where angels fear" are also very strong tracks. To anyone who hasn't heard this album or got rid of it without giving it a fair chance, I'd recommend buying a copy. Even though Peace of Mind is available used at low prices, it's still a brilliant album!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best kept secrets of the early 90s.......2003-07-15

This is one of my most cherished CDs and perhaps one of the best albums ever recorded. Though brutally wiped out of most people's memories over the years, Breathe is one of those few bands out of the 80's that I still carry the torch for. If you remember and enjoyed Breathe's 1987 `All That Jazz', you will be blown away by their 1990 release `Peace of Mind', a terribly overlooked, but highly outstanding work of art. (Sadly their last album.)
Quite a shift from `All That Jazz', which consisted of jazzy fun-boy pop tunes and soulful ballads, `Peace of Mind' validated the band's maturity and is a superb demonstration of their strong musical potential. Yes, the boys are all grown up on this one. Gone are the songs about deceptive girls, monkeys, and hollywood stardom. If words can describe this second album, the music here is a smooth, jazzy, sophisticated, insightful, soulful, and impressive blues splendor. Ingenious lyrics and David Glasper's immaculate voice will take you on a journey through the good times and the bad, which in turn will leave you wanting to hear much more than the 12 tracks provided. It's really quite amazing how these guys were only in their early twenties when they came out with this stuff.
Though I thoroughly enjoy all of the songs on this CD, the following are my favorite tracks:
    -I Hear You're Doing Fine
    -Does She Love That Man?
    -Will The Circle Be Unbroken?
-Got To Get By (Talk about ethereal!)
-A Perfect Love (This is where you go into a trance.)
The only complaint that I have is with the "Say a Prayer-Remix". It's actually one of the better remixes I've heard of that song, but a very LOUD one. This comes right after the calm and peacefulness of "A Perfect Love". Talk about a rude awakening!
All in all though, I would say this album deserves more than 5 stars. 'Peace of Mind' may have been terribly underrated, and unfortunately is now out of print, but though over 10 years old, it does not sound outdated. Help yourself to a copy via online auctions or Amazon Z-shops. You won't be disappointed. It will have a magical way of remaining glued onto your CD tray for a long time to come.

4 out of 5 stars Pop soulful passion.......2003-07-03

After the pop perfection of All That Jazz Breathe members David, Ian and Marcus decided to pursue a different direction. Here they pursue a deeper perhaps more spiritual and introspective journey through joy, heartache and loss. There are more down tempo songs and less traditional pop tunes giving the listener more time to relax and ponder what's lies inside of them. The standout song for me is "Does she love that man?". It is down beat and heartfelt and truly beautiful, a song about love lost and regret. It conveys honesty rarely matched in modern music. Here as through the whole album David Glasper's voice shows nuance without being sappy and range without being extreme or harsh. The story told is part of the human condition that I think all of us can relate to. "Does she love that man" is one of my favorite Breathe songs. At first when I heard Peace of Mind I surprised that it wasn't all out like Breathes debut album All That Jazz. Initially I was disappointed but with each listen the album revealed itself to me and I was able to appreciate it for what it was. The song that took me the longest to warm up to was Mississippi Water. The lyrics at the beginning are to me the weakest Marcus and David have ever written. For over a year after I got Peace of Mind I couldn't listen to more then 30 seconds of the song. It just didn't work for me. One day I was working out to Peace of Mind and couldn't skip the song like I usually do and to my surprise the song takes an unexpected turn in the middle and that moment instantly became one of my favorite Breathe moments. I truly do miss Breathe. The colors they presented to the world are varied and unique. I pose the same question that all Breathe fans pose. Where are you David Glasper? Marcus is working in web development and Ian has passed on to the after life for some much deserved rest. As a musician I have been inspired by Breathe and even with the loss of two original members would love to be inspired again.

5 out of 5 stars Something about it..........2005-09-27

There's something about Aeoliah (and this CD in particular) that I find particularly relaxing, soothing, even euphoric. I have a rather large collection of "new age" music, and it's rare that any of it affects me the way this music does. When I put on the headphones and listen, I find myself not so much listening to the music as absorbing it. Soon, I'm in a sort of twilight state where the concerns of the world are left behind completely. I can't emphasize enough how rare it is that music affects me this way -- it need not be listened to "actively" the way a lot of music requires in order to enjoy it. I do recommend headphones for this music -- just put them on, and (although best listened to while relaxing in bed or on a comfortable chair/couch with no distractions) there's no need to concentrate on the music. Just relax and allow Zen Peace to carry you away.

My highest recommendation -- 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Music of the people.......2005-04-23

On Eagles Wings is most definatly inspired.... Latin Music is great if you understand itm but I have not heard any conversations in Latin lately. The most important aspect of liturgy is the participation of the assembly and if the assembly (or most of it) does not understand what is being sung or said What's the use? Catholic Tradition is great kept alive on CD for those who want to walk down memory lane but it is a Vatican 2 church......deal with it or get out and join one of those rougue churches that say mass in Latin and stop trying to move backwards. There is nothing more powerful than a singing actively participating church.......let's not stiffle the voice of the Body of Christ.

3 out of 5 stars Good But Not Haunting Or Mysterious........2005-02-27

Hello, this music is good but it is not haunting, mysterious,Otherworldly,or timeless like Gregorian Chant or The Latin Mass now all I can say is that we as catholics threw out 1400 years of beautiful music for junk like "On Eagles Wings".Though To the person who said they prefer this to the pre-vatican 2 dirge music you are very close-minded and devoid of art and beauty and judging by what you said you are part of what I call the weak generation of Catholics who are only catholic on paper and have no sense of history for your very beautiful and mysterious church. Most people from that generation see the catholic church only after vatican 2 and you forget about the past councils and teachings of the Catholic church and it's history,I mean there is a reason they kept it so long it was for it's goodness(if it was bad it would not lasted 1400 years) as a priest on EWTN said to those who say "That is so pre-vatican 2" "So was Jesus." You see Latin Is very Beautiful and Mysterious language and it is a very catholic thing I mean whats more catholic then Gregorian Chant or the Latin Mass it's timeless like the church itself we as catholics need to start reclaiming are heritage from the likes of liberal priest and bishops of the 60's generation regardless of what they say there do as you please Mass is not in the spirit of Vatican II which allowed the use of vernacular in the Mass but it did not intend for Latin and Gregororian Chant to disappear it said to preserve it and give it, it's proper place that is what has been the intention of every pope since including this one they have all encouraged the use of Latin and Gregorian Chant in the mass.
How can anyone one not like it,it's very beautiful and it's been around for 1400 years how can one say that singer songwriter stuff which no one will remember in 50 years be better then this it's like seeing heaven and saying you prefer the world(alot of people unfortunatly do this.) Though to ansewer the question of it being to sad yes it is very somber and mournful but thats because the sacrifice of mass is a very solemn ceromony it was never meant to be celebrated in rock or jazz or polka or any other abuses by certain clergy. If alot of these ignorant catholics only knew what took place at the mass they would understand. You know you should be proud of the fact you are catholic because we have many gifts the protestants don't have(In the sacrements, the liturgy, the art and the music.) So I say to you now even you prefer the vernacular have respect and appreciation of what came before you in are Holy Catholic Church. Oh by the way I am 19 about to be 20 and Vatican II was a good thing it retouched are faith as Cardinal Francis Aziz said. Though I believe many people misinterpret it.
I suggest watching EWTN alot or really studying your faith and I like both Novus Ordo And Tridentine Rite.
More of a rant not a review but these songs have there moments and there are many Vernacular songs I like.

    Dominus Vobiscum.
    Et Cum Spirtu Tuo.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Traditional Hymns.......2004-05-30

It sounds like you are in Church, and that is what I was looking for. I especially like the Ye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones, Peace is flowing like a river, and Let There Be Peace on Earth.

Some of the other songs were better done by other artists. Like Shepherd Me is done better by the original Marty Haugen. This version is good, but not as good as Marty's. And I was not particularly fond of this version of Amazing Grace.

Overall I would recommend you buy a copy for your collection. The songs which are good, are very good.

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2004-04-01

This CD was not at all what I expected. It sounds just like you are in Church. Every song is accompanied by an organ and most of them sung in soprano. The tempo of all the songs is very slow too! I was looking for something I could sing along to, not put me to sleep! On the positive side, there are some beautiful songs, I just wish they were sung more "up beat".

4 out of 5 stars Yes, these are great Catholic songs.......2004-02-07

I grew up with the music of the St. Louis Jesuits and this CD is a good representation of the BEST. In the spirit of Be Not Afraid, I am Near You, on Eagles Wings are all songs I loved in high school, college, and adult life. We sing most of these songs regularly at Mass. These are pleasant renditions of inspirational songs that uplift - in my opinion they are far better than much of the dirge music pre-vatican II.

Wow. Talk about old memories. When Terry Croshure left the group in '69, Bob Angelucci hired me as the guitar player. I used to room with Bill, Jim and Tom. We played Ceasar's Palace in Vegas and dozens of other great venues. I remember playing along side Chicago at West Chester college - talk about intimidating! Those of you who were fans remember well I'm sure. It's nice to know that "Blue eyed soul" still lives on in baby boomer hearts and minds.

    5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING!!!.......2007-03-20

I went to college in Harrisburg in 1967 when I first heard of the Mag Men.
I saw them a couple times live and was just blown away. I have wondered many times over the years what become of them. I was very excited to hear that Bob Angelucci has a band featureing his wife on lead vocals and that they do a show in York called the Clas of Sixty Somethin. Gonna try real hard to catch the next one. I have three of their albums from the sixties. I bought this CD and am trying really hard to wear it out.

I have known David Bupp for many years. His beautiful voice is so enhanced by the CD release. I listen to the CD all the time which brings back such beautiful memories for me. Also, on the ( Class of '60 Somethin' ) CD's, out of the 4 produced, the 2nd CD is truly memorable, and David is absolutely terrific. Several truly beautiful songs. Brown Eyes.

Listening to this CD takes me back to another time, when life was carefree and nothing else mattered except for great music, girls and dancing. The performances on this CD equal or are greater than the groups of the Sixties that hit the top ten on the pop charts and R&B charts. The Mag Men just needed a better promo man. Hearing Buddy King hit the high notes on "Misty", Dave Bupp's soulful rendition of "Peace of Mind", and the great harmony on "I Could Be So Happy", is pure ecstacy. If Amazon sold a CD with only the group's "All My Loving" on it I'd pay $10 for that single song. I guess you had to live the Mag Men era in PA to understand these feelings. I bought a second copy of this CD and placed it in my safe deposit box to be sure I will always have a copy of my favorite CD. By the way, Bob Angelucci, drummer for the Mag Men has a fantastic band called "Class Act (with Rita)". Jim Seville is also in it.

Saw them in Asbury Park many, many years ago (Springsteen was still playing the local Hullaballo clubs). They were on the bill with the Four Tops and Temptations (the originals)I believe. They were announced as "our blue-eyed soul brothers...". My favorite tune is "I Can be so Happy". Get this cd and you'll become a fan.

I liked his work with the rippingtons but he was under the influence of Russ Freeman who didnt let him shine. This CD shows his work as a songwriter and player. It puts him at a new level. His songwriting is excellent and his playing is on par with contemporary players like Euge Groove, Dave Koz, and Walter Beasley. His best work on this CD is where he uses a full ensemble of musicians and stays away from drum programming. This is a great album to listen to from cut one to the end. The best cut by far is "Stride", and he does a cover of "Never Gonna Get It" with fellow sax players Kim Waters and Steve Cole which is a good listen as well. I enjoy this album alot and it has been steadily in my CD player for quite awhile.

    5 out of 5 stars Quickly Became a Favorite.......2004-12-05

Jeff Kashiwa has quickly become my favorite smooth jazz artist and "Peace of Mind" has quickly become my favorite Jeff Kashiwa CD.

Kashiwa, formerly of the Rippingtons, has a unique and pleasing sax style. This is the finest of his post Rippingtons works. It didn't take long for "Peace of Mind" to land on the top of the list of my favorite smooth jazz CDs.

5 out of 5 stars His 5th album...It is the Best Yet !!!!!.......2004-10-07

Although I am unsure about the singles which have been selected for airplay, it has been my observation that Jeff was partly doomed that his 3rd CD with Hyde Park (the "ah, oooh" song) may have been his best. Not so. This CD is fantastic. I think this project demonstrates more depth than all his prior releases. It certainly doesn't hurt that so many of his peers have colloborated with him. Particularly refreshing was his reunion with Former bandmate and Rippington founder/leader Russ Freeman. My personal favorite(tune) is Ecstasy. A guitar ripping sax inspiring tune co-written by Ron Jenkins and Jeff. It includes Jeff Lorber and Brian Bromberg(who also shares production credits). Of course, many fans will appreciate the bonus track done by the sax pack which consists of Jeff, Kim Waters and Steve Cole. Dare I mention that Several of Kashiwa's Rippingtons bandmates also compliment this project. Dave Hooper on drums and current Brittney Spears keyboard player Dave Kochanski. Also, when you get this CD, be sure to check out Track 9 - STRIDE..

5 out of 5 stars Jeff does it again!.......2004-09-09

Just when you think that Smooth Jazz is dead you get a brand new record from saxophonist Jeff Kashiwa. I purchased his other two records and I loved them both, but I was surprised to find he had a brand new record, and wouldn't you know, it was the best one of the three! It has some great special guests like Russ Freeman, Jeff Lorber, Chuck Loeb and the phenomenal Brian Bromberg who also produced a couple of songs. All in all, this is Jeff's BEST WORK YET and I highly recommend you pick this one up for your collection!

    Album Description

Peace of Mind" was intended to simply introduce Julie's music to American tastemakers. Instead, it struck a chord deep within America's burgeoning soul music scene. The combination of Julie's classical and jazz training, and her lovers' rock reggae roots, created a sound that was both classic and modern. "Peace of Mind" provided a glimpse into the future of soul music. Released less than a year ago, it has inspired an international grass-roots cult following which includes the biggest names in modern soul music. From the breathtaking lyrical journey of "Ketch A Vibe" to the freestyle call and response of "Sweet Melodies of Jupiter" to the percussive rapture of "Burning," "Peace of Mind" takes listeners on a mind-blowing adventure into the depths of retro-modern soul.

Julie Dexter is unique, sultry and one-of-a-kind. Her voice soothes and excites at the same time!!! What a talent!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Burning...........2003-08-06

Julie Dexter's Peace Of Mind is an excellent EP. Seven Songs deep there is no room for filler here. Now I don't know too much of the background on her and pretty much bought the album on a whim but it was a great decision. There's something other-worldly about Miss Julie Dexter. Her songs are filled with that different kind of soul and originality. It's definitely music to play when you are chilling with your significant other...ya know nothing to aggressive but not sleep inducing either. If you want some real soul to digest than I definitely suggest this EP. No need to name the best songs...they are all great. Invest today in this hidden goldmine.

    5 out of 5 stars It's definitely a 5 star CD!!!.......2003-03-28

Now this is a real surprise! I was recommended her CD by Amazon and it completely blew me away! Even though it's only around 20 something minutes in length, all of the songs are quality and beautiful. There's really nothing you can say bad about the songs that are on here. "Peace of Mind" is an absolute gem. "Ketch a Vibe" and "Burning" are masterpieces as well. All of the songs are nice and Jazzy and a little bit of Reggae flavor can be heard on 2 of the tracks. If you like R&B, there is no reason this CD shouldn't be in your collection. One of the reviewers said because of it's length, they wouldn't give it 5 stars. However, when a CD full of great songs come along like this, you have to call it like you see it. ... This is a reason to always take a look at what Amazon recommends for you!

    4 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised.......2003-01-26

Sometimes the reviews in Amazon are better than the music. I was very pleased that I took a chance on this EP. I would never have bought this unless Amazon had suggested it.Well, it was great. Now we want a full album!

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent Music.......2002-11-25

This CD is excellent. It is not full of sappy lost love music, but it is uplifting and get you in a good mood. The music is great, the vocals are great. I give it 4 stars because it is too short. At about 25 minutes playing time I've had samplers longer than this.

Originally released as a series of 78 rpm recordings for Capitol in the late 1940s, this set collects the work of Dr. Samuel J. Hoffman, the leading theremin virtuoso of his age. After adding theremin to a number of successful films (most notably, Spellbound, The Lost Weekend, and The Day the Earth Stood Still), Hoffman (a podiatrist by profession) teamed with British composer Harry Revel. The result: three albums that introduced this oddly provocative instrument to the world. On Music Out of the Moon, the tone is optimistic futurism with Hoffman guiding his instrument through dramatic swoops across the universe while an enthusiastic chorus oohs and ahhs at the wonder of it all. With tracks like "Lunar Rhapsody", "Mist O' the Moon," and "Radar Blues", Moon may be the most unintentionally hilarious disc in the set. The second disc, Perfume Set to Music was, according to the liner notes, inspired by "world famous perfumes." The music, of course, is as ridiculous as the concept. The chorus remains on Perfume, but the mood is a bit more sedate, stepping away from futuristic jazz and utilizing more string arrangements. On Music for Peace of Mind, listeners are instructed that "This music has a message, if you will open your mind and heart to receive it. Turn down the lights, relax in an easy chair, and listen. Then, for a few stolen hours, perhaps you will warm to happy memories and blissful hopes." Oh, you will, all right, you will. --S. Duda

4 out of 5 stars Les Baxter, too!.......2007-04-25

This is a package of 3 discs, each with its own sleeve, which replicate the very brief original 1947-50 albums.

Much of the music here is fairly tame cocktail stuff - all of it composed by Harry Revel and nothing at all like the film work Dr. Hoffman had done in Hitchcock (and Dali)'s SPELLBOUND or would be called upon to do in the 1950s. The collection was a disappointment to me in that regard, but as I'm a Baxter fan and 2 of the 3 original albums were Baxter/Hoffman projects, I enjoy the opportunity to hear some of Baxter's pre-Nat Cole work.

The first album, MUSIC OUT OF THE MOON, is mostly doo-wah pop vocals. The theremin might double the vocal line or take an occasional solo. This album reminds me a bit too much of the "Wake the Town and Tell the People" type of Baxter.

The second album, PERFUME SET TO MUSIC, is unquestionably exotica in spirit. There's far more variety of sound and mood and Dr. Hoffman's theremin is put to better use. His solos are more free - anticipatory of the vocalise for which Baxter would become renowned in the 1950s with Yma Sumac! Nice! I know that at least one of these tunes, "Jet", was released on 45 at the time of this recording (on RCA Victor), billed as "Orchestra and Chorus under the direction of Leslie Baxter / Samuel Hoffman - theremin" since I myself have it. Its B-side was another Revel ditty entitled "Struttin' with Clayton" which is not included here - no great loss actually, but cause to wonder whether more might be out there somewhere.

The Billy May album MUSIC FOR PEACE OF MIND may be my favorite of the three. The theremin is front and center from the outset. The ensemble playing is better. It's a good big band rather than the cocktail orchestra of the Baxter recordings. The piano work is stronger. Also, the sound is opened up - not so squelched as in the older Baxter projects. The whole thing is vigorous, if not quite as enchanting as the Baxter PERFUME recording.

This is a nice collection. For those out there who might not necessarily care about having the mini versions of the original album covers, the very same music is also available as a single disc entitled WAVES IN THE ETHER. Consequently and fortunately, if one DOES prefer this 3-disc presentation, the appearance of that alternative on the market has significantly decreased the price of this earlier-released product.

4 out of 5 stars Good For A Trip To The Moon.......2004-07-23

I will be the first to confess that this is not the type of music that I would generally listen to on my own accord. The theremin is a peculiar instrument and it is used to good effect here. A word of caution though, if you are looking for a CD showcasing the theremin for the "spooky sounds" it is capable of, do not buy this CD. This is very melodic theremin and vocal jazz from the 1950s. All three volumes are very structured and emphasize harmonies. This is a strangely absorbing CD set, and I bought it for a very quirky reason.

I am an airline and former Air Force pilot, and Neil Armstrong has been my hero since childhood. When he went to the moon on Apollo 11 he took with him a tape of "Music Out Of The Moon", which he played in the tape player he shared with Buzz Aldrin and Mike Collins. He took it because it had long been a favorite of him and also his wife, Jan. He played some of the peculiar sounds over the NASA downlink at one point on the way home as a private message to Jan, much to the confusion of the flight controllers. Ever since I read the story I wanted to hear this recording and was not disappointed, although it isn't exactly what I expected, either. For more information, see "First On The Moon", by Armstrong, Aldrin, and Collins. Since the time of these recordings many other artists have experimented with the theremin, including Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin.

If you like music from the 1950s you will like this. If you like experimental music you will like this. I only gave it four stars as a value statement: the set is rather expensive and contains three CDs, yet there is only about an hour of material total, which seems a bit excessive. A better package would have had all three volumes on one CD, but then nobody would pay thirty dollars for it I suppose.

Bottom line: give it a listen. If it's good enough for Neil, it's good enough for me.

3 out of 5 stars Unique & rewarding, but for hardcore fans only.......2004-05-22

Be warned, most of your money spent on this so-called "box set" will be paying for the gatefold-style casing, paper disc sleeves and the accompanying 28-page booklet. Each of these albums clock in at under 20 minutes, combining for a total of only 54 minutes of music across all three discs. Nonetheless, this is truly vintage; embodying the rapid, dashing orchestral sounds of WWII movie previews and Warner Brothers cartoons. Whenever my wife's friends hear this music, they always get a crooked face and say, "This sounds like an old Disney movie."

The first two discs, "Music Out Of The Moon" and "Perfume Set To Music" (arranged by Les Baxter), sound like a game show orchestra tuning in some otherworldy sounds; Hoffman's theremin flirts alongside a piano, harp, strings, and even a vocal choir (not quite the Ray Conniff style if that irritates you). The great Billy May conducts the last disc, "Music For Peace Of Mind". The expressive song titles on this disc indicate the gentle mood that is intended, emphasized by wavy flutes and strings. The first track, "This Room Is My Castle Of Quiet", swallows my thoughts up and takes me away every time I hear this. Hoffman restrains himself with the theremin; most of the songs have small passages where he is buried deep within the orchestra or not heard at all.

The aforementioned booklet details the theremin's origin, as well as an explaination of Hoffman's induction into music (he was a chiropodist by trade). A couple of these tracks have appeared on Volume 3 of the Capitol Records Ultra-Lounge series, and I recommend buying that as well if this disc really excites you. I enjoy this box set but I would endorse it more for fans of lounge music than for fans of the theremin.

      5 out of 5 stars Delightful!!!.......2002-03-23

Beautiful light orchestral compositions in the classic post-WW2 style, featuring the Theremin as a solo instrument. If you're looking for spooky sci-fi Theremin sound effects, this ain't it. (For that, check out the DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL soundtrack.) Discs 1 and 2 were orchestrated and conducted by the great Les Baxter, disc 3 by Billy May, when both were only in their late 20s. I bought this set to add to my extensive Les Baxter collection, and am very glad I did! As to why 3 discs when all the music could've fit onto one, I wondered that too until my set arrived in this morning's mail. Each disc comes in its own little sleeve that reproduces the cover art and liner notes from the original 78rpm album, plus an excellent accompanying booklet with more notes. A perfect collector's item!

1 out of 5 stars WORST CD I HAVE EVER PURCHASED BAR NONE!!!.......2004-12-17

This is awful stuff. I love all sorts of music and have many fine performances of Beatle covers. The arrangements on this CD, such as they are (if you can even call them arrangements),sound as though they were done by a demented monk. The music starts and stops for no apparent reason. Do not buy this unless you want to punish yourself...it is not only depressing but annoying, how did this get released? I have never listened to something so poorly performed, John Lennon would roll over in his grave if he heard this. If the rest of the the String Quartets efforts are of this caliber, I think they should be hung with the strings of their own instuments and good riddence! Once again, don't buy this unless you really want to make yourself ill...

      5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous!.......2003-03-20

These are great String covers, they chose the songs well. Sadly, there's very little material on here (at least it feels like it). If only they filled the disc with classic Lennon songs.
