Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars GREAT for kids and parents, too!.......2007-04-13

I rarely write reviews, but just had to write about this amazing CD. It's not your typical kiddie-fare. My three kids (ages 4, 6, and 8) listen to this one over and over again, and my husband and I are hooked, too. We are not into jazz at all, but the songs here are so catchy and fun. It's cool enough that you could even play it at an adult function, and everyone would like it. In fact, I'm buying it for my mom, who is 64, because I know that she'll be singing it around the house in no time at all -- just like we do!

4 out of 5 stars cute for kids.......2006-08-13

I bought "Nicky's Jazz Lullabies" before my baby was born and loved it, so I decided to purchase this CD. My baby is a little young for it yet, but it fun to listen to while we play. The songs are cute and catchy, and I'm sure she'll love it eventually. I'm a jazz lover and hope to introduce her to some of the greats. Plus, in my opinion, this beats those cheesy kids songs any day.

5 out of 5 stars Everybody listens when they come to my house.......2006-07-25

This is a delightful program of songs that will please everyone with a garden of word-tune delights. My family and I loved it. We've played it over and over again for our friends. I bought it for several other children I know. They loved it. One 4-year-old is determined to learn every song. And that means learning lots of words, rhymes, syncopation, from great artists of American jazz culture. A verbal infusion for the young that is great fun.

5 out of 5 stars A gem!.......2006-01-23

I rarely write reviews, but I need to comment on how fantastic this compilation is. I have a four-year-old and an eighteen-month-old, and this CD is in heavy rotation at our house. My husband and I love the music at least as much as they do -- it's stylish and sets a great mood as we're making dinner and doing dishes. The kids love it too, needless to say. My four-year-old's favorites are Three Blind Mice (she loves when the farmer's wife squeaks that she'll give back the tails) and the final track by Peggy Lee (where she says the word *poop*, as in "party poop" -- endless laughter ensues). Ella Fitzgerald's A-Tisket, A-Tasket and Chew, Chew Your Bubblegum are priceless. All in all, I highly recommend this CD -- everyone will be happy to hear it again and again.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most under rated cd's on the market.......2005-05-03

This cd has won awards and delighted anyone who has listened. Why it isn't a requirement for kids learning about music, especially in the US where Jazz became Jazz, is beyond me. Perfectly charming songs from the best of the best who made Jazz, lots of passionate Jazz.

4 out of 5 stars A great stand alone CD.......2005-02-05

Like other folks, I got interested in Friedemann after hearing "Indian Summer." After reading the only other review in here on this album, I felt I had to write something to give Legends of Light a fair shake. While not as consistent in delivering spellbinding melodies like his first album, Friedmann shows a maturity and sophistication in this well-constructed assortment of tracks, some of which reach the almost euphoric peaks of Indian Summer. The best track on the album, in my opinion, is Sunday in Alsace, which to me is the best melody to come out of the region since "Is Paris Burning?" There are no real disappointments on the whole disc, and the rich assortment of instruments blend well into some deep and mystical musical journeys. Several songs move through multiple phases, providing the listener with a feast of musical transitions, not a style not so different from the master of this method, Chris Spheeris. I simply loved the exotic blend of instruments, comparable to something Andreas Vollenweider might do, with everything from saxophone to accordian to congas. Cloudy and mystical introductions give way to catchy rythms and haunting melodies. This disc is definitely not money wasted, and I'd prefer it to a number of better selling performances by musicians churning out redundant performances that fail to live up to early accomplishments. Take this one home, and if you don't like it, email me and I'll buy it back from you! No, just kidding. But pop this in right before you sit down and pour the wine and light the candles, and you'll get your full value out of this wonderful recording.

1 out of 5 stars The final flop of a sad career.......2005-01-02

It's probably way too late, and the shelf life of this CD has expired, but I want to note (for the record) that this CD was one of the most embarrassingly awful productions I ever had the privilege of previewing and then not buying. And as such, an occasion for sorrow and bewilderment.

Sorrow, because Friedemann Wojtecka is a gifted guy, yet could only prove to be a one-disc wonder. And bewilderment because "Indian Summer" (the one-disc wonder) was SO good, one stands in shock that the composer-arranger of that masterpiece seemingly had nothing else in him after that!

The setting: It was in the early 90s. I was a thrilled owner-listener of "Indian Summer" which even now, in 2005, knocks me out, and I was a somewhat bemusedly disappointed owner-listener of "Aquamarine", when this CD popped up. Having noticed a huge drop-off in quality (meaning "uninspired") from "Indian Summer" to "Aquamarine", followed by a huge gap in time to this one, I thought (wisely) "Uh-oh. How long does it take to go really far down hill?" Answer: about four years.

If it takes someone four years to come up with something like this, their fifteen minutes of musical fame is surely over.

This poor ol' CD shows the poverty of our Herr Vojtecka and his musical imagination. There's no there there. Nothing melodically or harmonically or instrumentally or inspirationally going on. The melancholic uplift of "Indian Summer" stayed with that disc, and the inspiration dried up thereafter. And I don't get it. Friedemann is a great recording engineer and producer; he's worked on the CDs of a lot of good artists, and he's got a good ear. Why did he put this out?

Well, you probably either ducked and ran when this came out, or you bought it and either feel protective or ripped off. It's too late to warn you, but if nothing else, you can see that one quasi-fan of Friedemann is still listening to the best, and lamenting the fallout.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A must-have for collectors........2002-09-28

This numbered collector's set includes a concert video DVD, a music CD, and a biographical book. And while the video and sound quality is nowhere near as good as "Magician's Birthday Party" or "Legend Continues" or "Acoustically Driven", if you are a Uriah Heep fan, this is still must-have material. However, I would not recommend it for the non-fan or casual listener. The glossy book is interesting, but if you are a UH fan, you likely already know everything in it. It also contains some nice photos. All this is done with high-quality materials and assembled in a very nice book-like package.
