A must have for any P-Funk lover........2007-07-24

This in my opinion along with Earth Wind & Fire's Gratitude album is the best live album ever recorded. George, Bootsy, Eddie and Bernie put it down sho nuff on this one. I remember when this album first dropped in 77 and i was in love with the whole P-Funk mania. I was a youngin' then, but i remember it like yesterday. This is one live album you must have in your collection.

If U have never been to a Parliament concert, this CD will definitely paint a visual 4 U.
The tracks R bumpin' the grooves R thumpin', and Geaorge Clinton moves U through song by song with funky precision joined by the late Glen Goins on vocals (Children Of Production, This Is The Way We Funk You, and Swing Down, Sweet Chariot).

and it's time to tear the roof of the mothersucker...Famous words that will never die for this time and space by Parliament/Funkadelic. I purchased this the same time that Funkentelechy vs The Placebo Syndrome came out and was determined to collect each and every Parliament/Funkadelic album that I could on a $5.00 a week allowance (don't laugh,$5 was big money for a 12 year old in the '70s)! In any event, this is a classic LP of the greatest Funk/Rock/R&B band of all time! They were inducted in the Rock-N-Roll Hall Of Fame a little too late for my taste yet, they made it! If you were too youg to go to a PFunk concert as I was or you weren't born yet, You need this album! The Funk mob is ever flavorful and tight. The recording is what it is but if you crank it just loud enough and put all your bass in on your stereo, close your eyes and open your mind---You are there in the midst of a superfunky concert with The good Dr. Funkenstein, The Clones, Starchild and the rest. Jerome Brailey is rockin' the drums so tuff that it is no wonder called "Bigfoot". Glenn goins,The Parliaments and Gary Shider are all rockin' the vocals with those wonderful,wonderful ladies! George is his usual--Tearing up the house as the MC/Ringleader/Dr Funk. This was and still is a very enjoyable album. I just think that "Dr. Funkenstien " lost it's appeal after the first 6 minutes but, a good album--Buy It and Go to the Concert!!

Welcome to the Mothership........2006-06-05

Parliament was a very uneven band, but they really pulled it together for this set of live shows recorded in Oakland and other places. An incredibly upbeat set of tracks filled with infectuous grooves, great rhythms and all the hallmarks of modern-day hip-hop. George Clinton and Bootsy Collins anchor the P-Funk All-Stars, which included Maceo Parker on saxophone and Bernie Worrell on keyboards and synthesizers among many others. Their shows were extraganzas of sights and sounds that had everyone singing and dancing in the aisles. This is the place to start when it comes to exploring funk music in the 70's. It really doesn't get any better than this. My only qualm is the lack of liner notes and the microscopic print when it comes to noting the band. Parliament really does deserve to be treated better than this on CD.

Rock solid pop music is alive and well.......2002-06-11

After having seen the band several times live and having their past c.d.'s in my collection, it was no surprise that their new disc sounded this good. The band keeps improving with every new release and continues to show a talent for writing some of the best crafted pop tunes that are out there in todays market. Being fed up with the same spoon fed endless droning on of todays manufactured slop that passes for pop music, THIS ISLAND EARTH proves to be the best of todays true music talent. I recommed not only this disc for fans of pop music, but also get your hands on their back catalog as well and do your best to see them live. This is when they truly show what they can do! Also out there is bootleg acoustic preformances of thier early radio appearences. The d.j. who has these tapes is sitting on a gold mine!

Change your life.......2002-03-14

Don't buy the albums of this group unless you want your brain haunted by their great lyrics and melodies and by their great delivery. They opened for 10 Thousand Maniacs at Patchogue NY Theater a couple of years ago---it was fantastic!

This Island Earth's latest release, "Welcome to the Merry--Go-Round" is nothing short of superb. I purchased their last CD "Home Sweet Home" a while ago and thought it might be hard to improve on that one. With this latest CD, they not only show greater range, but continue to write incredibly catchy and memorable songs that are fresh and original. These guys obviously listened to a lot of music growing up, and their command of different styles shows. Hell, just buy it!

Sounds great in my walkman or home stereo...Heard them left of the dial and found the disc here. Worth the price of admission, pick it up...

A Great British collection.......2005-10-05

This CD features several particular composers who have written pieces of music that are quintessentially British: Jeremiah Clarke, George Frideric Handel, John Stanley, John Eccles, Henry Purcell, William Corbett, Edward Elgar, Arthur Sullivan, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Gustav Holst and Thomas Arne. The pieces here are triumphant, celebrating that particular period of Empire when the British ruled vastly such that the sun never set upon it - one of the key elements of such triumphant music-making, particularly for the time, was the use of brass and trumpet. Some of the later composers included here draw on inspirations from these earlier times.

One of the featured performers on this collection is John Wallace, who was principal trumpet of the Philharmonia Orchestra since the 1970s; he founded the brass ensemble, the Wallace Collection, ten years later in 1986. In 2002, he became principal of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, Scotland, and the Wallace Collection gave their last performance shortly thereafter. However, the Wallace Collection lives on in performances on CD such as this one, performed with William Boughton and the English String Orchestra. Other tracks are performed by Scottish Chamber Orchestra conducted by Alexander Faris and the English String Orchestra conducted by Stephen Darlington.

Pieces here are very familiar to anyone with an interested in British national composition -- pieces such as the Water Music by Handel are very famous, as are Holst's 'Planets' and Sullivan's (of Gilbert & Sullivan) 'Pinafore'; other pieces, such as Clarke's 'Trumpet Voluntary', are similarly famous even if their composers did not achieve the 'brand recognition' that Handel did. All of the composers here came from the period spanning the late 1600s to the late 1700s, when music was as often written for music halls and public performances as it was for royal events and commissions.

The performances here are uniformly upbeat and well played, with little by way of blemish save the occasional drop and surge in levels (as often becomes the case when recording music with sharp brass elements).

One can envision theatres full of people waving Union Jacks while this plays, and many of the pieces have a quality about them that speaks directly to the time and place of Britain.

If you like Baroque music, buy it; it is excellent.......2005-06-29

If you like Baroque music, buy this 2 CD's BOX SET; it is excellent. Clarke, Handel, Purcell, Corbet and so on are very well played. The orchestration is very good, the quality of recording is excellent. Remember that Baroque music uses mainly a single trumpet, few other brass instruments, some woodwinds and very few drums. It is very easy, elegant and pleasant to listen. When I got married in 2003, I have chosen only Baroque music for the ceremony and the banquet because Baroque music is so lovely, so delicate and so sweet. Even if you have never heard or you think that you have never heard Baroque music, buy this CD; I tell you, you will not regret your choice because it is really an excellent CD. You have my words.

Heaven and Earth was a disc that picks up where Take Me to God left off. The music is instrumental dub. Listen to the sounds as Jah Wobble and company take you on a trip to
the lands of Heaven and Earth. Spiritually uplifting musical soundscape that'll keep your faith in enlightenment. Just listen to this disc, all is content with the universe. The pop music scene is a much nicer place with musicans like Jah Wobble and the Invaders of the Heart. Oh Nama Shivah.

Highly recommended.

An impossibly hard to find album that was deleted quite some time ago. This is almost certainly a pan-cultural album, citing both Eastern (Asia), and western influences...a focus on less tracks and stronger compositions is the template to which the stunning epic opener of "Heaven & Earth" with it's oriental gong's, flutes, guitar (acoustic), and quintessential Hong Kong melodrama evokes the film score from "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", and its instrumental brilliance is only matched by its ambition. The first vocal track "A Love Song" neatly encapsulates Jah wobbles strongest attributes...coaxing inspired vocals from collaborative vocalists (in this case female singer "Natacha Atlas"), who lends a tremendous singing performance in her native tongue. By the time the epically changing "Gone To Croatan"...a 15 minute orchestral worldbeat track with legendary bassist "Bill Laswell" performing, or the western percussionist flavoured "Hit Me" with the very subtlest elements of deft turntable scratching (with Turntable virtuoso "Rob Swift") bring things a to a extremely satisfying conclusions....you'll no doubt be in agreement, that this is unarguably Jah Wobbles greatest (solo) album.....truly captivating.

If you only buy one Jah Wobble album, this is the one!.......1998-07-05

Contrary to the gloom-and-doom persona of his earlier works, Jah Wobble has fashioned a uniquely upbeat musical vision on Heaven and Earth. Despite the "World Music" label that has been stuck on his latest endeavors, Jah Wobble doesn't strike the listener as someone who is "cashing in" on a fad, instead Natacha Atlas' impassioned vocals on "A Love Song" strikes a chord deep within all of us, her national origin is not of concern so much as hers was the right voice for the job. And even though "Om Namah Shiva" was featured on an earlier EP, it's appearance on this album doesn't sound "slapped together" as one might come to expect otherwise. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

Almost the Real Thing.......2003-05-12

This cd is a nice addition to the Sounds of the Earth collection. The sounds of birds and water is relaxing and soothing. It kind of makes you feel like your at a private beach and you're lying down in the chair listening to the natural sounds around you. A small downside is that the sounds of the animals get a bit too loud. It sounds like they are right above your head and it sometimes breaks the solitude. But other than that, this is a fine cd.

great album as well as a live show!.......2000-03-31

This a great album with catchy songs and melodies you'll wake up humming. At a club I worked at (and TIE played at) we liked the album so much that we put their eponymous first album in the between set rotation. It was the perfect choice to keep the crowds energy up and a good vibe in the room. This new album is a step up in songwriting and production. Their live show is one of the most entertaining around and all the guys are friendly and as unpretentious as they come. Buy this album and you won't be disappointed. P.S.- I've just read that TIE has signed on to record their next album with Goo Goo Dolls producer Armand Petri. Keep your eyes peeled for it!

Classic music for the 90's.......1999-07-27

Now here's a band that will save the deteriorating landscape of rock if they get the chance. Home Sweet Home delivers a sweet little collection of pop/grunge tunes (think of Weezer but different) so catchy and perfectly constructed I was amazed these songs were never written before (Well, okay, "Up and Down" seemed like filler, but even that was better than most). Recommended+++

The album kicks off rockin' and continues with great pop/rock hooks and harmonies. As far as I know, this is the band's second album, can't wait for the third

Rock/Pop Tunes That Stay In Your Head.......1999-06-10

This album, ``Home Sweet Home'', from This Island Earth moves from one rocking hook to another. the album opens up with a high tempoed song called ``Dry Well''. The second song, ``Edge of Tomorrow'', oozes with emotion and the choruses explode with guitar and counterpoint string lines. Three part harmony blends perfectly on the bridge. ``Rainy Day'' and ``All I Want'' also stand out on this disc. I reccomend taking a shot on this one.

This album, an EP, has a very live feel, like your at a show but unlike some live sounding recordings, the production doesn't suffer. the hooks are very catchy and you find yourself humming them right after the first listen or two... ``Edge of Tomorrow'' is a radio ready stand-out single.
