The first thing that strikes you about Randy Crawford's performance on Feeling Good is the soulful ease with which she moves through the songs, whether sh''s bluesily channeling Nina Simone on Billie Holiday's "Tell Me More and More and Then Some" or recasting Fred Neil's "Everybody's Talking" as a bouncy confection. The second thing that impresses you is how well she plays off the spare but supple acoustic piano of Joe Sample, who contributed the lively arrangements and co-produced the album with Tommy LiPuma. Nearly 30 years since she teamed with Sample and the Crusaders on the hit, "Street Life," both artists have left any stylistic excesses behind to deliver one of their breeziest efforts. Though the material is nothing if not eclectic--the Leo Sayer hit, "When I Need You," the Newley-Bricusse Broadway classic, "Feeling Good," and the jazz standard "But Beautiful" are also in the mix--Crawford's gospel-fed strength and not-to-be-underrated jazz phrasing hold the center. In bassist Christian McBride and guitarist Anthony Wilson, she has two name jazz players behind her, in addition to studio veterans Dean Parks and Ray Parker Jr. on guitars and Steve Gadd on drums. --Lloyd Sachs

Album Description

Randy Crawford and Joe Sample's new collaboration is certain to impact the world as did their first collaboration, the international hit "Street Life." The CD, produced by two (2) time Grammy winner for Record of the Year, Tommy LiPuma, is an amazing duet between Randy's incredible voice and Joe's impeccable piano. The songs, all classics in their own right combine older standards such as "Feeling Good", "All Night Long," and "But Beautiful," with the more contemporary "When I Need You" first recorded by Leo Sayer, and Peter Gabriel's "Lovetown" from the movie Philadelphia. Steve Gadd-drums, and Christian McBride-bass, round out the trio.

4 out of 5 stars Randy & Joe Cruisin.......2007-07-27

This album is one in which hits every mood, like a long drive's theme. Randy has taken old songs and put them together with the music & style of Joe Sample, all you need is a glass of wine. You will not be dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars "Feeling Good" Randy Crawford/Joe Sample .......2007-07-13

In general, I am always very pleased with music by Randy Crawford, and this CD which has her paired with Joe Sample is superb. It is a blend of previous recordings and new songs which have all be arranged by Sample. I cannot say enough good things about this CD. Any money spent to purchase a copy is money well spent!

5 out of 5 stars Feeling Good in Istanbul.......2007-07-13

I attended their concert last night in Istanbul, Turkey. They played their songs from this album and expectedly, Street Life, and some other tunes. I had a great time and the music was a feast. The crowd was enchanted by Randy's voice, and Mr. Sample had a very good connection with the audience. My favorites were her interpretations of Feeling Good and Tell Me More and More. I hope she sings a lot more in the years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Jazz at its finest........2007-06-17

I am a big Randy Crawford fan and a big Joe Sample fan. However, I did not know they had collaborated previously. I was first introduced to Randy while on a business trip to Anchorage just prior to the release of the Cajun Moon album. I was listening to a smooth jazz station while returning to my hotel from dinner, when this absolutely captivating song came on. I sat in the hotel parking lot till it finished in the hopes the station would tell me what I had just heard. Alas, it was Cajun Moon. I have subsequently bought all of her albums, and not one disappoints.

Although I had heard Joe Sample previously, I really became a big fan while listening to WJZZ in Philadelphia while on another business trip. They played X Marks The Spot from the Pecan Tree album, which I ran right out and bought.

As I have continued to listen to these two stellar performers I have always hoped they might one day do a project together. When I found Feeling Good on Amazon.com recently it was like a dream come true. This is truly jazz at its very finest. Silky smooth from beginning to end. For anyone not familiar with the work of these two fine performers, here is your chance to hear the very best the world of jazz has to offer.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent combination.......2007-06-11

I have played this CD until I will probably have to buy another one. Randy and Joe really compliment each other. I look forward to more CDs by them.

"When Your Life Was Low," one of this album's four writing collaborations between former Crusaders keyboardist Joe Sample and pop's hack-for-hire Will Jennings, is typical of this CD's low aim and artistic laziness. The vague expression of friendship in "Life," voiced listlessly by the technically adept but boring Lalah Hathaway, is perfect for the office-ready smooth-jazz radio format and little else. Hathaway's appearances on 7 of The Song Lives On's 11 cuts are a blessing only in that they break up the monotony of Sample's in-one-ear-and-out-the-other noodlings; her extremely unnecessary version of "Fever" and a dull-edged remake of the Crusaders/Randy Crawford classic "Street Life" are résumé fodder and little else. --Rickey Wright

I have bought this CD 5 times since 1999 because my friends fall in love with it every time I introduce it to someone. This is a beautiful CD and one that has remained in my rotation for the last 7 years. If the Amazon reviewer didn't like this, I really want to hear what he considers to be good music.

You have probably heard Joe Sample and the Crusaders; however, "Spellbound" is nothing like it.
Much better; it is probably Sample's finest recording until this date.
Joined by Al Jarreau and Michael Franks on Vocals; Omar Hakim on Drums and Marcus Miller on Bass; JS delivers a distinctive and amazing groovy Crossover, Soul Jazz album.
How wrong can you be adding this CD to your collection?
Highly recommended.

Joe Sample is my all time favorite Keyboard player Ever. I love his Runs&his signature sound.this album has a nice blend of styles&Versatility that is always a trademark of Joe Sample's sound&Musical Complexity. i always enjoy the build up, the spacing&overall timing where Joe Sample's music is concearned.

5 out of 5 stars Absolute Treasure.......2006-06-24

I don't know if I've ever heard a better collection of songs!
Joe Sample is a masterful pianist-composer. Now I know why Eric Clapton had such a difficult time trying to play with these guys, which he was honest enough to admit (and we all know Eric is no slouch). Seven Years of Good Luck is an incredibly complex, yet beautiful and haunting song all at the same time. U Turn is a treasure also with outstanding vocals and probably the best ending to a song that I've ever heard. You can't say enough about this album. And don't pass by Michael Franks on Leading Me Back To You and Joe's piano solo. Quite simply, this is music at it's best. I'll never forget the first time I heard this - I was blown away.

5 out of 5 stars spellbound is a classic.......2006-04-07

I HAVE BEEN LISTENING TO SMOOTH JAZZ FOR OVER 20 YRS AND I AM THE KIND OF GUY THAT WOULD TRAVEL OVER 800 MILES FOR A CONCERT. WHERE I LIVE WE MIGHT GET ABOUT 2 OR 3 GOOD JAZZ CONCERTS A YEAR AND I MEAN MAYBE. WHEN WE DO HAVE THEM YOU CAN COUNT THE CROWED ON ONE HAND AND I THINK THAT IS VERY SAD.ANYWAY I HAVE A VERY LARGE COLLECTION OF JAZZ AND SPELLBOUND IS MY FAVORITE COMPLETE CD. WHAT I MEAN IS SOMETIMES I CAN BUY A CD AND 3 OR 4 TRACKS OF A 10 SONG CD MAYBE OUTSTANDING, BUT SPELLBOUND IS A CD THAT YOU DONT HAVE TO SKIP TRACKS, JUST SIT BACK AND PLAY IT THROUGH AND THROUGH. THERE ARENT MANY CD'S LIKE THAT,THERE MAYBE A FEW BUT NOT MANY. MY SAYING ON MUSIC IS "GOOD MUSIC BUILDS GOOD CHARACTER" AND THIS CD FITS THE BILL. GOOD BANDS ARE HARD TO FIND NOWADAYS, REAL MUSICIANS NOW ARE AGING AND MUSIC IS NOW OFTEN BEING REPEATED OVER AND OVER BUT THIS CD SOUNDS JUST AS FRESH AS THE DAY I FRIST HEARD IT. ITS,(TIMELESS) AND WAY AHEAD OF ITS TIME... CAN YOU FEEL ME?.

5 out of 5 stars Joe does standards and the result is absolutely beautiful!.......2004-08-30

We are all Joe Sample fans because of a distinctive style of
piano playing that is catchy, charismatic, and sometimes
remarkably impressionistic with his gift to musically illustrate
the places and memories that have most affected his life.
In this album, we are delighted to hear him appreciate standards,
his acoustic piano woven with some of the most beautiful
orchestration I have ever heard. This is the album to make
you feel good, relaxed, the one for the Sunday afternoon, or
the cozy late night in front of the fire with favorite people.
All of the selections are wonderful, the album is first rate
from beginning to end. I have just rediscovered it again,
and am totally mesmerized by it!! Outstanding!!

5 out of 5 stars An Invitation To Listen To Joe Sample At His Very Best.......2003-11-21

"I extend to you an invitation of timelessness, classicism,
and an insight into the great gifts of those who have come and gone,
and those who continue to give. The bond is eternal,
the gift is everlasting, and it is godliness." ~ Joe Sample

This wonderful CD has a special spot in my smooth jazz collection, along with "Carmel." All the melodies are great and truly remarkable that only a great jazz pianist such as Joe Sample can interpret with such an extraordinary artistry and elegance. This is unparalleled piano playing at its utmost best!

My personal favorites include "My One And Only Love," the title track "Invitation," "Stormy Weather," "Come Rain Or Come Shine" and "Summertime." My special mention goes to the second track "A House Is Not A Home." His interpretation of this Burt Bacharach/Hal David classic (with meaningful lyrics) is so poignant that it moved me to tears just listening to it! They say that there is a song for every experience in life.

This is one CD that will make you want to listen again and again. It's a must-have for all smooth jazz lovers. FYI: Joe Sample was nominated for Keyboardist of the Year 2003, and Male Artist of the Year 2003 in the 2003 National Smooth Jazz Awards. Congratulations, Mr. Sample!

5 out of 5 stars Great Standard Tunes.......2002-05-28

If I want to "chill" as the young folks say, this is the CD I play.

For one thing, the songs are Joe's interpretation of some of the greatest standard tunes. The title track is my favorite ("Invitation") with "My One And Only Love" a very close second.

Joe has a way of putting you and "another world" by the way of his piano. Take me away, Joe!!

5 out of 5 stars Recommended Therapy.............2002-05-25

to ease those tensions at the end of a day. It's about as good a mental massage as one can get......to take time out for a little introspection and complete relaxation while listening to this excellent selection and beautiful presentation of these standards ( from Gershwin to Bacharach, Ted Koehler, and Johnny Mercer to Horace Silver and John Lewis). That's quite a spread in one cd!.....and it all comes off well!

I listen with deep appreciation to Joe Sample's piano artistry, but I also have to give kudos to the orchestral arrangements and conducting by Dale Oehler......and probably the recording and mixing engineers for providing such great great sound.

Build yourself a drink, put this on your sound system, kick back and listen......you'll feel your petty worries and concerns drifting away.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Contemporary Jazz ahead of its time.......2005-06-16

If you've ever cruised the California coastline and experienced
the breathtaking Monterey Bay are where Carmel thrives, you will
truly appreciate how Joe has captured its essence and its
spirit. Armed with spikey chord punches, impressionistic
harmonies and storytelling melodies, the listener is taken
on an exhilarating journey with support from backup musicians
that lay down wonderful contemporary grooves while Joe spins
his distinctive piano solo style. I love every tune on
this album, especially the love song quality of "More
Beautiful Each Day" and "Midnight and Mist". Also fun is
the barrelhouse blues quality of "Cannery Row". I only
wish the entire album was re-recorded with the modern
digital technology of today, I believe it would sound
even more remarkable!

5 out of 5 stars "More Beautiful Each Day".......2005-03-08

"A spectacular greeting of the land and
sea erupts into one of the definitive
parallels of human and environmental life.
She reflects the joys and tragedies of life
through her evolving existence.

She's a thousand love songs in one,
as beautiful as a thousand women, a thousand
infants and a thousand old folks. She's a
symphony of life. Here's a song for Carmel
and her sisters throughout the world." ~ Joe Sample ~ "Carmel-By-The-Sea"

Joe Sample is not only a great jazz pianist and composer but also a creative poet. This is my first Joe Sample album that turned me on to his wonderful music way back in the eighties. I upgraded it to a CD in the nineties when it first came out. This is one of his bestselling recordings and a tribute to the city of Carmel. Listening to this CD makes me want to visit Carmel again. Carmel-By-The-Sea is one of the most beautiful places in California. It has a lot to offer for visitors to enjoy - - its pristine and virgin Carmel Beach, its lovely cottages, its parks and trails and there's the Sunset Center Theatre, which is the venue of many jazz, classical and cultural performances.

The seven tracks in this recording are all Mr. Sample's original compositions. To me, all the tracks are highlights and they're all magnificently performed by Mr. Sample and his back-up musicians. You'll love the bubbly melodies of "Carmel" and "Sunrise," the tuneful melodies of "Paintings" and "More Beautiful Each Day," the lovely rhythm of "A Rainy Day In Monterey," and the contemporary grooves in "Midnight And Mist," featuring Hubert Laws on solo flute.

A must-have not only to all Joe Sample fans but also to anyone who enjoys mellow jazz at its very best!

5 out of 5 stars This was My first classic CD, please make it one of yours........2006-03-10

There are not many words that can tell what this album means to me. This album was a milestone in my life, thats how good it is. I bought this album in 1991, while I was in college. I have been a Jazz music lover since the age of 6 or 7. At the time I was not aware that Joe Sample was a part of the group, The Crusaders. At the time I was experimenting with new artists in an effort to broaden my collection and come across some new groups. See, trial and error was the best way to find out about stuff that your peers were not versed in. Keep in mind this was the pre-internet years. I will admit, I chose to buy the album because of the art on the album cover, other than that there was not much to go on because this name was new. But I will say, that was a gamble that paid off. From the first time I listened to that album, I was amazed. I could not believe that an album could have so many songs that were consuming. Out of the 9 songs on this album, I found myself mentally caught up in the Piano (the instrument that JS plays)on 7 of those songs, the other two songs were just plain fun. This album is the best album by a Jazz pianist I have ever heard. And ever since 1991, I have been telling everyone that can hear, Joe Sample and Ashes to Ashes is the best.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding work!.......2005-08-22

Joe Sample is a master to his own. His inspiration motives are always enrooted in the joy of living; that's why his interpretative freshness and constant innovation. As he states in the inner pages of the album: "In the ashes of the endangered species, the only way out is rebirth."
All the CD is mesmerizing. With special emphasis on the tracks: Ashes to ashes, The road less traveled, the dreamy Phoenix and obviously the exquisite I 'll love you.
A must in your personal collection.

5 out of 5 stars Musical storytelling at its finest.......2005-03-05

Joe Sample is a one of a kind storyteller. His albums
are built on a theme to which he weaves a tapestry of
beautiful melodies to soothe, inspire, and take you away.
Regardless of some opinions, this is not bland smooth
jazz. At the core of his collection you still hear the
Crusaders' sound: the funk, soul, rhythm and blues of
Joe's Texas roots. The earthy grooves are still there.

Though this album is a smoother confection of his
academy, you can get a earthier version of Joe from
"The Pecan Tree", a introspective pared down (trio)
version in "Old Places, Old Faces", full strings and
orchestra on "Invitation", and of course the vocal
collaboration of the still top selling "The Song Lives
On" with Lalah Hathaway, where Joe proves just how
wonderfully lyrical his piano melodies really are.

Joe remains my favorite contemporary pianist, and I
am a music teacher and pianist myself. I look forward
to the day I can see him in concert!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best albums ever made!.......2004-10-30

This is the album that turned me on to Joe Sample. The 2 opening tracks set the mood for the album which continues through the last track. Joe Sample is one of those artists who can really convey his heart and feelings in songs, even though they are instrumentals.

Is it jazz? I'm not sure what to call it. Why do we have to classify music? To me the music on this album has a Soul/Quiet Storm/Jazz feel. I mostly listen to Quiet Storm, Soul, Smooth Jazz & some Oldies. This album fits very well in my collection.

Depending upon the day, this album alternates as my #1 favorite album of all time with others like "Do You Love Me" Jonathan Butler; "Another Sun" Yutaka; "20/20" George Benson, "Posh" Patrice Rushen, "With A Lot Of Soul" Temptations & "Floy Joy" Supremes (no I'm not kidding on the last one!)

Anyway, put it on & relax!

3 out of 5 stars Unfortunately Mediocrity.......2004-06-17

Yes, I said it. I found this album to be mediocre. Joe Sample is reknowned for his style, composition, and music to relax, move, or whatever his music leads the listener to do. But for some odd reason, this is an album that lack spirit. It seems to fall flat for some unknown reason. It's something that I can't seem to get into, to this day. It's not like how I feel about Norah Jones (soporific unless you hear it on a rainy day), I cannot get into this album, even after the years in which I had it. It has it's moments every now and then ("Phoenix" is one track that I listen to quite often) but for the most part it misses the soul the Sample is known best for.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Joe Sample.......2005-10-07

Excellent CD and selection of songs. Joe Sample features a terrific beat and music easy to get into.

5 out of 5 stars Sample an American Treasure.......2005-04-18

I'm not a piano player but this music makes me want to learn. There something magic about the chords and rhythms Joe weaves throughout his music. The song Spellbound is an excellent example of this. It's what got me excited about getting into Joe's music after the many years since buying 'Carmel'. Summertime is one of the most haunting renditions I've heard. There's really so much to recommend.

If you don't have any of Mr Sample's recordings, this is an excellent one to get. Each song is absolute gold. Beautifully and subtley executed by stellar performers like Abraham Laboriel, Steve Gadd, Paulinho De Costa. Listen and enjoy an American Musical Treasure. This music can be a springboard into other projects by Joe Sample. A truely special collection.

4 out of 5 stars A Smooth Survey of Joe Sample's Distinctive Style.......2005-03-02

For those not familiar with Joe Sample's briiliant and distinctive keyboard style, this collection is a smoother
selection of his most popular compositions. I always prefer
the original albums that these selections were taken from,
and I highly recommend "Old Places, Old Faces" from which
"Black and White" and "Hippies on a Corner" were derived, for
his pared down and tasteful trio sound with bass and drums.
If you like the fully orchestrated strings effect, the
"Invitation" album is a gem, from which his interpretation
of "Summertime" was taken. "Ashes to Ashes", "Road Less
Travelled" are from his "Ashes to Ashes" album, which
is probably more smooth jazz than anything else he has
recorded. Street Life is priceless in its original
recording with the vocals of Randy Crawford, and can
be found on the Crusader's album of the same name,
after all, the group was partially founded by Joe Sample
and is indeed, the Joe Sample sound in its earlier making.
It's hard to please everyone on a collection album, because
the overall effect of the album is weakened in its attempt
to cover all the versatility of style of the artist.
But as a sampling of this keyboard master, I recommend
to those who want an introduction to his world. Don't
stop here, and check out "The Pecan Tree" while you are
at it, as well as "Rural Renewal" which is Joe Sample's
reunion album with the Crusaders. Down home meat and
potatoes bluesy R&B, great grooves!!

4 out of 5 stars one of the piano masters.......2005-02-09

I was familiar with most of the songs on this disc before I bought it, except Mystery Child, Summertime, and Black and White. I was especially moved by "Summertime" - Joe Sample plays it so beautifully with an excellent backing ensemble. Although these songs are all quite good, I'd recommend buying something other than "Best Of" because this is something pre-chosen for you, and you might like something better than "Best Of". There are very often overlooked pieces that don't make it to "Best Of" compilations, and this is certainly the case here. Try his Invitation disc.

5 out of 5 stars Cool, smooth,funky with class........2003-12-16

Its all about taste and recognition of great talent...this type of music is ideal for me especially on Sundays or lets say weekends....all of his music is 5 star rated.

5 out of 5 stars Old sounds, Old Melodies.......2007-02-20

Released in 1995, "Old places, Old faces" is the coolest, smoothest and most relaxing Jazz album Joe Sample ever produced so far.

All tracks are mostly acoustic with JS. emphasizing on his original melodies, backed by Jay Anderson on bass, Ralph Penland on drums, Dean Parks on Guitar, Charles loyd on Tenor Sax and Lenny Castro on Percussion.

"Old places old faces" Original sound and melodies; one thing for sure, this is a very pleasing and a well memorable album for this great artist.

Highly Recommended

5 out of 5 stars A must have.......2007-02-12

In my opinion this is the best album that Joe has done thus far. I have almost all of his music and this is the pinacle of his talent. A must have for any collection of jazz. This album is truly great.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful jazz album that flows.......2006-12-10

I've had this album for a long time, just listened to it again last night. I was amazed how the songs flow together and that every track on the album is memorable and listenable.

Starting with the simple clean piano on "Free Yourself", with the percussion and bass flowing in, and ending with "Angels on my Mind", again clean piano chords and lead, with it's somewhat somber, somewhat hopeful tone, this album should be listened to straight through over and over.

My favorites are "Hippies on a Corner" which always gets me moving (and has a great background story that Joe tells in concerts before he plays it; the refrain is great in this song) and "Black and White" with it's single note melody opening.

Fantastic album, recommended for jazz fans, piano fans.

5 out of 5 stars Music review.......2006-03-09

I was so pleased to be able to purchase the above mentioned CD, I'd been looking for it for quite sometime until someone told me about AMAZON.Com. I listen to a special jazz radio station and they play the best music, so when I heard this particular CD again on the air, I decided to give AMAZON>com a try and I wasn't disappointed. Thank you very much---------PHYLLIS McNabb

5 out of 5 stars A collector's item.......2005-11-13

With this album Mr Sample sets the standart so high many could only dream about. Though many superlatives can be used to define how good this album is, they will not be able to convey pure elation of the listener. My heartfelt congratulations also go to Mr Anderson and Lloyd who put out their best to bring about this masterpiece. It is quite emotional even you can hear mumbled exclamations in "black & white". This cd also doubles up as a great demo which can be played to unearth the weaknesses and strengths of your two channel. A must-have for an audiophile! Period.

4 out of 5 stars A Classic!.......2007-05-12

This album (CD)is a classic product of the period between 1969-70 and this
man has a voice to knock your socks off. But he doesn't sing of typical
song subjects- he inspires you to think about the core meaning of life and love. He has a three-and-half octave range and the ability to use his
breath to sing in a way no one else in rock can. And this album rocks, too! I've been waiting years for it to be released on cd and now I'm enjoying it like never before. You have to hear it and all of his others, especially the earlier albums.

5 out of 5 stars POSITIVELY WITHOUT PEER!!!!!.......2007-03-09

I have waited a very long time for this - my very favorite Shawn Philips album - to see the light of day in digital format. I was not disappointed. The mastering is without equal, the sound actually as "warm" as it was on vinyl. The acid test of this is the incredible instrumental track, entitled CHORALE. In a word: WOW!

I won't bore you with minutiae about how every song on this album is spectacular, but they are!

Suffice to say that - put to the old "what 10 CDs would you bring with you if you were deserted on a desert island?" test - Shawn Phillips FACES album is at or very near the top of the list.

But here's the corker: every dime from the sale of FACES goes to the SAVE THE CHILDREN fund! So, you win TWO WAYS when you buy this Cd. You'll get some of the most beautiful music you've ever heard, and you'll be helping children the world over.

Go! Do it! Buy FACES now!

5 out of 5 stars after all these years, still a masterpiece.......2007-01-28

having recently started replacing LP's dating back to 1968 (300 give or take dozen or so)taken in a home invasion, i just received "faces". what a treat !! the musicianship is superb, shawn's soaring vocals are a delight. it awes me that this is over 30 years old and still so enjoyable.
shawn is a musical genius, when i bought this decades ago i knew i liked it but at that time was not truly appreciating the layers of instruments, it's like a truly fine wine. also appreciated is shawn's willingness to not limit his music to one form. before purchasing this, i acquired his greatets hits and found myself enjoying all of the tunes and the variety of music types it represents. i would heartily recommend any of his works to anyone who can appreciate layers and layers of instruments and an astounding vocal range. i saw shawn in concert in the early 70's and plan to repeat the experience as soon as he starts touring north amemrica again.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Smooth Jazz Compilation and Great Sound Quality!.......2005-11-11

I took a risk getting this album as I had never heard of Joe Sample before but I knew that I would be getting good sound quality from a GRP recording and boy was I pleasantly surprised! This album comes from a digital master and hasn't been remastered but sounds a lot better than many of the so-called remastered cds that are out there. Also, I've discovered just how good Joe's playing is and this is one of my favourite smooth jazz albums in my collection. Highly recommended and I'm glad I stumbled across this gem!

5 out of 5 stars Classic Collection.......2005-05-16

Joe Sample is My All time Favorite Keyboard player. He signature sound&Groove is timeless to me.this Collection showcases His Genius&the way he works chords with His Rich Arrangements.I ain't even talking about his Classic Material with the Crusaders.this is a Must have Collection for the Joe Sample Fan.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the 70s.......2004-04-23

This compilation of the some of the best tracks of Joe Sample's career (at least as of 1978) greatly show the expanse of his repetoire. His usage of construction, complexity of chords, heavy-handedness (a staple for Sample), and masterful improvisation are shown ten fold in this CD. "Night Flight," "Carmel," and "Rainbow Seeker" (songs one would instantly consider upon hearing Joe's great name) are of course in this collection. These are reason enough to purchase the CD. Along with other favorites of the past like "Oasis" and "Burning Up the Carnival," the casual listener will fall in love and try to play catch up with the brilliant artist with a nearly 50 year career. When your career lasts this long, you have to be good. Here are some of the examples.

4 out of 5 stars joe sample........genius!.......2004-01-15

Joe Sample has quite simply made some of the best jazz ever alone and, as well as with "The Crusaders". This CD just doesnt cover the extended versions of these, especially "Night Flight".
This has to be indeed the best jazz instrumental song he made during the 80's. There was plenty room left on the CD for more.
But for the music of Joe, I'll take what i can get.
