Put together by Abba's own Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! manages to cram over 20 of the Swedish supergroup's songs into a threadbare plot. It goes a little like this: Young Sophie is getting married and she's trying to identify which of three men is her father. That's about it. Wisely, the musical doesn't mess around with the songs, save for the insertion of some dialogue or for having some of them performed by a man (it works amazingly well). Abba fans will jump on this import of the London production, but traditional fans of musical theater should consider it as well. After all, Andersson and Ulvaeus's songs have always felt as if they were more than isolated pop gems and actually belonged to a longer narrative. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:

A vibrant tribute to MGM's legendary confluence of brains, talent, hard work, ambition--and dare we say it?--massive egos, Singin' in the Rain long ago took its rightful place among the first rank of the studio's dizzying catalog of film musicals. This double-disc, 46-track 50th-anniversary edition features all of the film's familiar songs, as well as numerous outtakes and extended versions, many culled directly from the film's original recording masters. Its second disc also chronicles the film's clever--if studio imposed--self-referential musical gambit of recycling a slate of Arthur Freed/Nacio Herb Brown songs from Metro's first decade by including 14 of the originals, including performances by Jeanette McDonald, Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, and Freed himself. Featuring a dozen previously unreleased recordings and an illustrated booklet containing the insightful reminiscences of the film's original writers, Betty Comden and Adolph Green, it's the ultimate musical companion to one of cinema's magical, enduring masterpieces. --Jerry McCulleyAlbum Description
The complete 50th Anniversary Edition and a bonus disc featuring the original recordings that inspired the 1952 MGM classic! Includes 12 previously unreleased tracks 'Would You?' (duet) (unused version), 'Beautiful Girl' (unused original version), 'Singin' In The Rain' (alternative vocal), 'Should I' (unused instrumental), 'You Were Meant For Me', 'All I Do Is Dream Of You', 'Broadway Rhythm', 'You Are My Lucky Star', 'Would You?', 'Dancing On A Rainbow' plus 'Broadway Melody Ballet' (original version). Listeners in the thrall of the great Cole Porter's lyrical sense and legendary melodic finesse probably don't need to be prompted to pick up an album featuring new piano-trio interpretations of 14 of the master's gems. The good news though, is that Nashville pianist Beegie Adair's Dream Dancing: The Songs of Cole Porter holds up as a first-rate piano-trio record on more than just the strength of Porter's melodies (this is equally the case on her Nat "King" Cole Collection, Frank Sinatra Collection, and even her Love, Elvis set of the King's ballads). An elder stateswoman of the Nashville music scene who's backed her share of country and pop performers over the years, Adair displays a formidable technique and a sensitive soloing style that may surprise even seasoned piano fans. She's helped by her regular rhythm team of bassist Roger Spencer and drummer Chris Brown, both of whom play behind Adair as if they anticipate her every dynamic shift and nuance before it happens. They bring life to everything from the bluesy groove of "I Love Paris" to the gentle swing of "What Is This Thing Called Love." Dream Dancing shows Adair putting her technique in the service of these great songs rather than running all over them--so much so that even her interpolation of John Coltrane's "Giant Steps" during Porter's "You're the Top" seems only to enhance that classic melody. --Ezra GaleCustomer Reviews:
Not Just "Dinner Music".......2007-01-05
Dream Dancing: Songs of Cole Porter by Beegie Adair.......2006-11-07
Surprising Disappointment.......2006-10-18
In this CD, Beegie seems to run rampant with the music to the point that one can't follow the lyrics, either in your head or aloud. It seems a bit egotistical to me to do so, and I would compare this CD with her wonderful "I'll Take Romance,: where Beegie seems to worship the songs she plays. In "Dream Dancing," it's more of a battle.
The final track "Begin the Beguine" is just painful, a slow funeral dirge of a song that can be a great self proclamation.
Not recommended.
Definitely among the short list of great jazz pianists.......2006-07-18
On Deam Dancing, Beegie Adair and her trio present the great songs of Cole Porter in a, yes, "romantic" and "easy on the ears" format. Intentionally created for dinners, candlelight moments, and those oh-so-grand times of canoodling with your heartmate.
This in no way dismisses her from inclusion among Bill Evans, George Shearing, Erroll Garner, Oscar Peterson, Tommy Flanagan, Gene Harris, et al. Still a sceptic? Go see her live concerts. I've attended dozens of them, and I have every single recording she has made (23 to date).
Again, her recordings are great, no doubt. Her live performances are beyond great. Hear for yourself.
Beegie Adair once more with her exceptional interpretations.......2006-02-22
Her choice of chords (harmony) is also very nice.
If you like Gene Harris, Oscar Peterson, George Shearing, McCoy Tyner, Bill Evans or Ray Charles you will appreciate her fine interpretations.

The Dream World of Postwar Ballroom Dancing, Reborn.......2004-10-12
run-don't-walk to the nearest audiologist.
Now sure, as a trumpet player, Ray Anthony wasn't Harry James (who else WAS for Godssakes?), but what he HAD he sure could USE...No, this isn't "jazz," it's scintillatingly-arranged commercial big-band-and-strings, with jazz inflection...But taken on its own terms this disc is an unabashed pleasure from start to finish.
DREAM DANCING is the more famous of the two LPs resurrected here, and it's a jewel.
Still, the earlier LP, DANCERS IN LOVE (1957 ? ), is one of those sweetly, pungently recorded Capitol albums of the late mono era: everything is perfectly focused, and if it's possible, "better than stereo."
If you can't recreate a big-band ballroom or install a revolving mirror-ball in your own abode, then at least have a few old friends over to your patio, porch or deck; serve some hors d'ouevres, light some lanterns, pop open some bubbly, and play tracks 1 thru 12...By the time "Blue Champagne" is over, you'll think you see Marilyn, in that green & white-print summer dress she wore in SOMETHING'S GOT TO GIVE, smiling at you from the edge of the patio..."Sure, why not, you silly old thing."
