5 out of 5 stars An Unheralded Classic.......2005-10-24

Though not as adventurous in time signature explorations as the other recordings the classic Brubeck Quartet made in their series of "Time" recordings, this album is nonetheless a sublime gem. On this session, one of the most cohesive groups in the history of jazz exalts in its ability to swing mightily while retaining an intimate, hushed atmosphere. Dave's compositions, while seemingly simple compared to earlier pieces like "Strange Meadowlark" and "Unsquare Dance", and the later "Crescent City Stomp", belie the group's deftness at negotiating the considerable challenge of transforming the simple to the sublime. On "Softly, William, Softly" and "Forty Days", two of Brubeck's most beautiful themes, Desmond carves out solos so perfect, each note so carefully chosen and executed, yet so bursting with pure spontaneity, that they stand alongside anything composed, edited and honed by the best of jazz composers. It sounds so effortless it's easy for a casual listener to either write it off as facile or assume it had been worked out in advance. Neither is true. What is true is that this is a beautiful, overlooked masterpiece which I have come back to time and again since first owning it on LP 35 years ago. It never fails to satisfy. One of the most beautiful and significant works of art I've ever encountered.

4 out of 5 stars A fine recording.......2005-07-08

Although some critics have erronously claimed "Time In" signals the decline of the Dave Brubeck Quartet, others have rightfully noted that this 1966 session is a testament to the band's solidarity and capacity for growth. They sound comfortable with one another, even during the most startlingly difficult passages of music; and their improvosations are more fully realized here than they are on the famous "Time Out" and "Time Further Out" recordings. What's more, Teo Macero's production features a clean, open sound that allows the piano to emerge as a remarkably diverse instrument: at times, Dave's percussive chords suggest a wall of color more brilliant than an entire horn section; other times his single-note melodies are precise and angular.

The whole ensemble shines, but the session's most notable assets are the compositions themselves: the title track, performed as a trio, sans Desmond, captures the listener with its charming melody and tour-de-force piano feature, where Dave superimposes a waltz on a foxtrot; "Softly William, Softly" is a gorgeous slow-tempo tune with one of the most memorable choruses; "Travelin' Blues" and "He Done Her Wrong" boast the band's blues-swing capabilities; and"Lonesome" showcases some of Dave's richest piano passages, where there is as much Rachmaninov in his playing as there is the Duke...

While "40 Days," an excerpt of Dave's full-scale religious music, doesn't spark, the album's closer, "Cassandra," reminds us that the quartet could still pack some serious heat in its swing.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars 2 great London cast albums make their CD premiere!.......2004-12-22

This fabulous CD from Sepia presents 2 great (ultra-rare) London cast albums on compact disc for the very first time.

WISH YOU WERE HERE had been a success on Broadway (mainly for the novelty of featuring an actual pool onstage), and a charming score by Harold Rome. It played for 282 performances at the London Casino. Most recognisible from the cast is Shani Wallis, immortalised oncreen as the tragic Nancy in OLIVER!, here playing the pert secondary female lead. Elizabeth Larner and Bruce Trent play the central couple. Standouts in the score are "Ballad of a Social Director", "They Won't Know Me", "Where Did the Night Go?" and "Could Be". Shani Wallis delights with her playful "Shopping Around". The original Broadway cast album of WISH YOU WERE HERE (on the RCA label) has been out-of-print for a while now, but the London cast is more than ample compensation.

PAINT YOUR WAGON had been a sound success on Broadway for it's composer and lyricist (Frederick Loewe and Alan Jay Lerner), offering fine roles for James Barton and Olga San Juan as father-and-daughter Ben and Jennifer Rumson. The London production was very interesting because it offered the dynamic of a real father and daughter in the roles. Bobby Howes was joined by his lovely daughter Sally Ann Howes (in her first big role). She's a smashing Jennifer, though the recording (originally made to fit 4 sides of a set of 78's), denied Howes the chance to lay down her rendition of "What's Going On Here?". Nevetheless fans of Sally Ann will find this recording indispensible. Bobby Howes (in one of his last great performances) is a fantastic Ben.

This CD is filled out by Sally Ann Howes' performance of "I Love Him As He Is" from the original London cast of BET YOUR LIFE (the rest of the album can be found on Sepia's `Julie Wilson in London with Friends' ). Also included are 6 numbers from GUYS AND DOLLS recorded in 1953, performed by Jerry Wayne and Lizbeth Webb (who played Skye Masterson and Sarah Brown in the original London production).

Excruciating. Ray Brown is one of my all-time heroes but even he can't redeem this appalling travesty. Kiri Te Kanawa should be prevented from ever attempting this repertiore again by any means necessary.

If you want a good example of how great jazz with a singer can be, buy "John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman" or Charlie Haden "The Art of Song" instead.

5 out of 5 stars "A lesson in laid back CLASS".......2004-10-14

Here is the most beautiful rendition of "Never Was You" ever with the restrained vocal purity of Kiri and the awesome chords of Andre's piano...a real gem. Ray Brown and Mundell also contribute their world-class talents to this unique UNPRESSURED album. A treasure that will please music lovers for many years. GRAB IT WHILE YOU CAN!

5 out of 5 stars Kiri does it again!.......2004-04-26

Wonderful! As is everything the inimitable Kiri does. No, she does not sound like other jazz singers but adds the Kiri touch that has made her one of the most listened to of all performers, whether of opera or jazz. This CD made my ears very happy. I'd advised the disgruntled writer to hold on to her CD--there is only one available on the entire internet and the seller is asking for $75.00. An unmistakable message--it appears that Kiri lovers don't want to part with Kiri CDs. Also advise other viewers to get the VHS from which this CD was made. Inexpensive now but it'll not be for long. It's called Kiri & Andre: The making of Sidetracks. It has the best closeups of Kiri that I've ever seen and shows what a happy-go-lucky gal she is. Also recommend her Kiri! on VHS (her 50th Birthday Concert) It is one of the best musical recitals ever made--period. Sorry, the price is out of sight.

5 out of 5 stars Admirable playing of an odd mix of music.......1999-05-28

Some programming courage was required for this disk, including this odd mix of Beethoven,Granados and Cardew all under one roof. Golan's playing is admirable and it's a shame she doesn't record more. There is no shortage of music. Cardew(who died mysteriosly in a road accident in December 1981) had an intimate realtionship with the piano,he played and recorded frequently himself. These pieces here are excerpts from his fascinating 1973 "Piano Album" a piece of conceptual subversion intended as materials to be played at political functions rallies, mass meetings and "duus" or parties.Cardew limited his imagery to Chinese and Irish revolutionary material to either arrange or impart original commentary. It is indeed a revolutionary idea in music to create in this way."Father Murphy" refers to a priest when the French occupied Ireland around 1789,he was a sympathizer and Cardew has a simple B-minor melody that is put through one single virtuosic variation of broken triadic triplets. "The Croppy Boy" refers to the young Irish revolutionists who closely cropped their hair,as a symbol of their rebellion, not unlike the spiked multi-colours today, here the music has gorgeous rolling chords from the lower depths, where the melody slowly emerges from these thick blankets of sound. These pieces are like miniature tone poems. Golan's Beethoven is well refined, and again it is odd to have this mix."For Cornelius" again was a in memorium piece by Alvin Curran, an American now living in Italy. This is Satie-like,almost as if Curran had lived in the north of London for a while to absorb the strong influence of Satie and Morton Feldman, prevalent amongst British composers.
