There's nothing like a breakup to focus your muse. This follow-up to the stunning, multi-platinum Fallen was penned as singer Amy Lee's troubled romance with bandmate Ben Moody was spiraling out of control, impelling her to craft an anxious record full of recriminations, revelation, and self-flagellation, as she questioned everything that kept her whole. It's a fascinating journey for the listener as she ventures into her own personal heart of darkness, her stricken, perfect voice suspended on an unsteady precipice between breakdown and breakthrough. Despite the loss of two members, including guitarist Moody who left mid-tour in 2003, the album has a maturity, sophistication, and a singular vision that wasn't found in their earlier work. Stately and as exotic as Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti, with its intricate instrumentation, disturbing imagery, and disembodied chorus, The Open Door shows exactly what this band is capable of. "Snow White Queen" is a goth-y alternative to Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together," equally anthemic, but with much more grit and pain. --Jaan Uhelszki

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-07-24

Wasnt as good as the first one, but its got a few decent songs on it .

5 out of 5 stars ...Wow.......2007-07-19

I've always heard of this group but never heard any of their songs until a few months ago. I heard Sweet Sacrifice. Going through a hard time with my boyfriend, it felt good that someone else was belting out my pain and frustration. I even downloaded some older songs later like Going Under and My Immortal (Okay, not a hard rock song but beautiful all the same).

3 out of 5 stars Not as solid as previous efforts.......2007-07-17

This CD is not bad, but it does not reach the same level as 'Fallen'. There are some interesting musical ideas in evidence (such as Lacrymosa), but they do not quite succeed in execution (the obvious looping of the background Lacrymosa clip is extremely distracting.) Overall, the songs seem to lack a certain balance in execution that makes them both interesting and disappointing at the same time.

5 out of 5 stars The best album ever?.......2007-07-16

The very best album in my rather extensive Rock collection, which goes back as far as Cream. Nothing less than outstanding from first note to last, it just goes to show that some of the best music every made is being produced today (albeit in smaller quantities than the '70's).

Strongly recommend buying all three Evanescence albums to date! With original albums like these, no need for a "Best of" compilation.

5 out of 5 stars worth the wait.......2007-07-12

This album was completely worth the wait . Amy lee covers all points on the spectrum and her voice is amazing to say the least.from Sweet sacrifice all the way through to good enough, thers not a bad song on this cd in my opinion.

Essentially a live showcase for their mega-selling breakthrough Fallen, this CD/DVD combo set chronicles Evanescence in peak form during a subsequent tour stop in Paris. The performances here lean early on the crunch of guitarists John Lecompt and Terry Balsamo (reaching a peak on the the band's potent cover of Korn's "Thoughtless"), but ultimately revolve around the melodramatic, goth-rooted vocal charisma of singer Amy Lee. It's on stripped-down, yet still larger-than-life takes of "Bring Me to Life" and "My Immortal," as well as the shadowy grace of "Breathe No More," that Lee stakes her claim to the alt.diva throne. Taken as a whole, the forceful renditions here argue that this live recording was hardly premature, instead well documenting the band's more direct musical tack and considerable live chops. The CD contains the appropriately named, previously unreleased studio track "Missing," while the DVD supplements its crisply shot and edited concert performances with four videos and an hour of documentary footage and interviews. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

Evanescence's "Anywhere But Home", captures one night of the magic as cameras entered The Zenith in Paris to capture the phenomenon. The two-disc DVD/CD features Evanescence's sold-out European tour and is offered in both 5.1 and two-track audio mixes. In addition to the live concert DVD, which was directed by Hamish Hamilton (U2, Peter Gabriel), "Anywhere But Home" also includes a CD of the concert presented in a two-track mix, and the previously unreleased studio recording of the composition "Missing." The DVD features the band's four music videos, an hour-long behind-the-scenes program, and some special surprises in addition to the concert film. The special surprises will be discovered by the viewer as they navigate the menus designed exclusively for this special release.

4 out of 5 stars Even a 40-something mom will enjoy this.......2007-07-30

I've been searching for the "real" version of "Bring Me To Life" ever since I heard the bubble gum version on Kids Bop. For me, I enjoy music that features good vocals backed up by instrumentals -- particularly piano. Amy Lee definately has that. She reminds me of an Annie Lennox with a more modern edge. I guess I'm also drawn to darker sounding music in minor keys.

I bought this CD because I couldn't find the original album of Fallen where "Bring Me to Life" originally appeared. While this is a live album (which generally I'm not as fond of), the songs definately give you a good sense of what Evanescence is about and whether you will "bond" with them. Now I can't wait to get the other CDs and glad to have found this group and add them to my cadre of anguished chicks.

If you like Annie Lennox and/or Alanis Morisette, then you should like this group. And you will have the added advantage of not being accused of only liking bands from 1985 by your kids...

4 out of 5 stars Three songs not on "Fallen" (or "The Open Door").......2007-07-16

Top-notch for a live album, not intoxicated and the sound quality is pretty good. Three songs not on "Fallen"! "Thoughtless" is as good as any single "Fallen" track, and the live concert footage on the DVD actually excited jaded 40-something me. Plus VH1/MTV videos, which some of us have never outgrown.

My highest recommendation is to buy all three Evanescence albums to date.

4 out of 5 stars A great set for an Evanescence fan!.......2007-06-19

What's better than having a live Evanescence concert on CD? Having a DVD to go along with it! This set is sure to please any Evanescence fan.

So what's to like about this CD/DVD set? Let's start off with the CD first. The setlist is the same as any concert during this tour. I personally saw the band perform these songs when they did a show in Florida. It's great to hear the same songs you know and love sung differently. Most of the songs on the band's first album, Fallen, are on here except for "Hello". The two other songs that you may not recognize are "Breathe No More" (a ballad) and "Farther Away" (a harder song complete with an awesome drum and guitar-heavy intro). Both are songs that were written before the band's first album. You also have a cover of Korn's "Thoughtless" (which I personally think is better than the original) as well as "Missing", a track that was recorded pre-Fallen. "Missing" is a beautiful song presumably about suicide. No songs from the band's second album, the Open Door, are on this disc as this was recorded before that album was released.

Now let's move on to the DVD. The DVD contains the live performances of each of the songs included on the CD. It's great to see an entire Evanescence concert with your own eyes (especially for those people who haven't had the chance to watch a live Evanescence show). Highlights include the audience singing the chorus of "My Immortal" and the intro to "Haunted". You then have all four music videos for the singles that were released from Fallen, "Bring Me to Life", "Going Under", "My Immortal", and "Everybody's Fool".

The best part of the DVD is the bonus footage. Highlights include bloopers (on stage as well as press stuff), pranks (mostly from the band's last concert from this tour), and a ton of behind the scenes footage (on the tour bus as well as pre-show stuff).

Now onto the negatives. As for the cd, Amy's voice could be better. There are some pitchy spots that make me cringe but that is expected as most of the band's songs consist of Amy holding out notes and singing in full voice. Other than that, I have no problems with the cd. As for the dvd, the quality of the actual concert is iffy. There's a lot of special effects that take away from the show and way too many shots of the audience.

If you're a big Evanescence fan (or even a casual one), pick up this set. The behind the scenes stuff is worth the cost alone.

4 out of 5 stars CD/DVD Combos.......2007-06-05

I wasn't sure how many stars to give this. I do give the live performance on the CD five stars. But the DVD performance of the setlist was horrible. I couldn't even finish it. The cuts annoyed me horribly and I could only get through one song. I don't what it is, but do the people today have that short attention span. I know for myself I can watch a band for about 2 hours. I'm 21 years old and I couldn't keep up with the cuts that the director decided to use.

Anyway, I suggest just getting the CD of this combo off of a friend or iTunes. Amy Lee has an excellent voice live and has energy. I love this band and I can't wait to see them on the Family Values Tour this summer. At least I don't have to deal with the horrible editing.

5 out of 5 stars enlightening.......2007-06-03

I really enjoy this purchase, but I'm a fan too. I enjoyed the music videos, the concert footage, the music, the singing, and the behind the scenes look at their life on the road. I really think this is worth having in your collection, if you like Evanescence.Anywhere But Home (w/ bonus DVD)

Though Rockpile managed only one, nigh-perfect album at the height of the '80s new wave boom, its members--Dave Edmunds, Nick Lowe, Billy Bremner, and Terry Williams--had played together in various incarnations, in some instances for over a decade: Edmunds and drummer Williams had been in the '60s power trio Love Sculpture; all had played on Lowe's '78 album Jesus of Cool and Edmunds's '79 collection Repeat When Necessary. But Seconds of Pleasure became their most complete and satisfying pop statement--if their ironic swan song, as well. This newly remastered collection features the complete original album, as informed and vibrant a tribute to American rockabilly and R&B roots (with an amped-up take of Joe Tex's "If Sugar Was as Sweet as You" and inviting reworkings of Gene Chandler's "Teacher Teacher" and Chuck Berry's obscure "Oh What a Thrill") as any contemporary group has ever managed--especially considering three quarters of the material is either Rockpile originals or contemporary compositions, like "Wrong Again" by Squeeze songwriters/mainstays Difford and Tilbrook. The generous slate of bonus tracks features all four acoustic, live-in-the studio tracks from the Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds Sing the Everly Brothers tribute EP distributed with initial pressings of the LP; two fine live BBC recordings from '77; a cover of Graham Parker's "Back to Schooldays"; a band original, "They Called It Rock"; and a blistering live rendition of Parker's "Crawling from the Wreckage" from one of the band's last appearances together at the Concert for Kampuchea. Though Lowe may now downplay them as "a posh bar band" who "specialized in playing Chuck Berry music four times faster than anyone else," Rockpile was truly one of the great rock bands of their--or any--era. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars One of the best CDs ever recorded!.......2007-05-12

I have heard songs off of this albums since it came out when I was only a school boy. I never putt it together that this was a super-group or even that these songs were on the same album. When I was old enough to put this together it then became impossible to find this recording. Now that I have and I have it, I realize it's even better then the few songs that infected me earlier in life. I love the up-beat rockabilly songs like "Heart", "Teacher, Teacher", and "Play That Fast Thing", but I also love the less rocking numbers as much. Add to all of this the bonus material now available on the CD and "Seconds of Pleasure" now translates into hours of pure listening pleasure!

5 out of 5 stars Great Pop Music! .......2007-01-15

What happens when you merge the incredible talents of Dave Edmunds and Nick Lowe, 2 of the seminal Pop music artists of the '70's-'80's-'90's? Happily, you get great pop music that creates a party atmosphere anywhere it's played. Along with the fun melodies and beats are witty tongue-in-cheek lyrics that have you laughing while you are dancing. Seconds of Pleasure is a classic CD that deserves to be discovered by new generations of music listeners for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars pub rock's supergroup.......2006-03-20

This record holds up really well, and as an example of accomplished musicians playing music that they obviously love, drawing on influences ranging from Chuck Berry to the Everly Brothers, and putting egos aside (at least temporarily) so as to function as a true group, in which each member contributes much, with fantastic results. The end result here is a wonderful, warm, deeply catchy record that rocks steadily; they called it rock, indeed!

4 out of 5 stars +1/2 -- Swansong from legendary UK rock 'n' roll quartet.......2005-09-28

When first issued in 1980, this was the culmination, and ultimately the final statement from a quartet that had variously backed Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds on their "solo" albums. In a large sense, this album is the pay-off on both Lowe's and Edmunds' years as producers and artists, deftly combining Lowe's pub-rock and basher-pop esthetics with Edmunds love of retro-rock and R&B. The band's history as a power stage act also pays dividends in the live feeling they gave to these studio recordings. The result is a celebration of all things rock 'n' roll, with a joyous tone that belies the apparent turmoil that was destroying the group as they recorded this swan-song.

I've gone back and forth on this LP. I found it disappointing upon first hearing it, feeling it didn't compare favorably to Lowe's "The Jesus of Cool" or Edmunds' "Tracks on Wax 4." But over the years I've found the songs to grow on me, and though the CD reissue (and perhaps the original LP) has a somewhat pinched, barely-stereo mix on many tracks, the performances and arrangements hold up. Columbia's Legacy reissue sweetens the original eleven tracks with seven worthy bonuses, including the essential quartet of Everly Brothers songs that were included on a 7" with the original LP. An additional trio of live tracks ("Back to Schooldays" "They Called it Rock" "Crawling From the Wreckage") show how powerfully sloppy the band was as a live act. 4-1/2 stars, if allowed fractional ratings. 5 out of 5 stars Still a great big pile of rock (and then some).......2005-09-13

Who said all rock'n'roll tragedies have to be fatal? One of the greatest is the dissolution of Rockpile in 1980, just as they were on the cusp of something really, really big. Four musicians who knew what they were doing, two gifted songwriters (Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds) with encyclopedic knowledge and big names of their own, most of them working together for years on Dave and Nick's "solo" albums before the big break came -- and then it all fell apart. At least The Everly Brothers, whom the dynamic duo so lovingly paid homage to, eventually reunited.
What was puzzling to outsiders about the Rockpile breakup was that it was such a contrast to the upbeat, almost joyous music on their only album under the band name. They rumbled out of the gate with that catchy "Teacher Teacher," with Nick singing in that distinctive British wise-owl voice of his (I never knew it was a Gene Chandler tune), straight into Dave and his high-pitched Welsh warble belting out Toe Tex's "If Sugar Was as Sweet as You" as another sing-song soul raveup. And save for a couple of speed bumps, they kept up the pace for a full album, with the high point being the pure, unadulterated, full-on, boyish "Heart," sung in high spirits (and high register) by bassist Billy Bremner. And along the way, there are also the bar-band bounce of "Play That Fast Thing (One More Time)" and "You Ain't Nothin' but Fine," Edmunds driving home the rock'n'roll grind of Difford & Tilbrook's high-rev "Wrong Again (Let's Face It)," a very Berry remake of Chuck Berry's "Oh What a Thrill," and the overreaching heartache of "Now and Always," a tune that wouldn't have been out of place in Buddy Holly's record collection. "Seconds of Pleasure" was one great big lovable pile of rock when I bought it in college and played it over and over, and 25 years later, it still is. The only things that have aged are the musicians and their fans.
And the bonus tracks make it all the better. The live cuts are OK (all said, I wish they could've licensed their version of "Little Sister" with Robert Plant from the Kampuchea album), but the inclusion of the "Nick Lowe & Dave Edmunds Sing The Everly Brothers" EP, a limited-edition four-song 7-incher from the early pressings of the LP, is just plain wonderful. They paid loving tributes to Phil and Don without trying to ape them, and just to have pristine versions of their incredibly sweetly sad versions of "Message to Mary" and "Crying in the Rain" is worth the price of the CD.
Y'know, every time I hear or see Nick Lowe these days, I get this feeling of sadness. These days, he kills us quietly with his stellar writing and his acoustic guitar. But I remember too fondly the days of Rockpile -- of this album and previous clever Nicktunes such as "Cruel to Be Kind," "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding," "They Called It Rock," "American Squirm" and "Rollers Show" -- and just wish for one more bit of that Rockpile magic. And having the enhanced CD brings back the very same feeling.

3 out of 5 stars 5 stars for technical brilliance, 2 stars for musicality.......2007-07-16

Jeff Beck is definately one of the greatest guitar gods ever, and he definately proves this here his riffs are hard hitting and his solos are fast and brilliant. However, one thing this album does not succeed in is giving a musical experience. Most of the songs are hard rocking but steady giving a heavy load kind of feel and the softer songs are less spectacular because of the mechanical keyboad "orchestras" backing jeff up.

Amazing playing, but if you want a musical experience check out Blow by Blow or Wired

5 out of 5 stars Five Stars are not Enough!!.......2007-06-27

From the holy trinity of Beck, Clapton, and Page; this work has to be considered among the best of the best. A must for any fan of the three. Beck's best by far.

3 out of 5 stars Technically flawless, but..........2007-05-10

Jeff Beck is often compared to his two fellow Yardbird alumni, Messrs Clapton and Page and frequently gets (deserved)credit for having surpassed them in his vision of what a guitar can do. While I'm not familiar enough with Page's work, other than the better known Led Zep material, to speak to his accomplishments, I'd have to say that Clapton, at least as it appears, has deepened in ways not evident on Jeff Beck's Guitar Shop. Sure, there are great grooves and intense playing and of course, amazing guitar solos. But the auto garage metaphor here works more than perhaps the musicians knew. The album is mostly pure, metallic testosterone. Barely any subtlety or warmth. Big, powerful and unapologetically beefy, Guitar Shop is an engaging disc but you're more likely to sit in wide-eyed appreciation of it than be moved or touched by it. It's shiny, but cold. Want to hear Jeff Beck more in touch with his "feminine side?" Check out his recent duet with Kelly Clarkson that aired on the American Idol charity benefit (available on itunes). He's restrained, sensitive and lyrical. And almost 20 years older!

4 out of 5 stars Another gem from the the Dalai Lama of the guitar!.......2006-09-04

You can't go wrong with a trio as versatile and talented as Beck, Bozzio and Hymas. "Behind the veil" is worth the price of admission alone. Also "Savoy" and "Two Rivers". Let's face it. This guy is the best. Noel Redding (Hendrix's late bassist) confessed in an interview that Beck was his favorite. Heck, you needn't interview me for me to say the same. My favorite album of his is "You had it coming". If you're in doubt, go with that CD. And do consider "Who else". In my opinion "You had it coming" is his best. Oops, did I neglect to mention "Blow by blow" and "Beck-Ola"? Excellent illustrations of his outstanding talent.

4 out of 5 stars Hard, metallic, and rough.......2006-04-26

I really like this album, but I am not sure it is quite a 5 star classic. Released in 1989, the CD is 39 minutes long and the sound quality is very good.

The great thing about Jeff Beck is that he is always experimenting and pushing the boundaries. The difficult thing is that you never know what you are going to get with a Jeff Beck CD. You might love one of his styles and hate his others. Many people who like Beck's pop music (especially the days he was with Rod Stewart) or his jazz fusion, hate this CD.

This is a trio of Beck, Terry Bozzio (from Frank Zappa and Missing Persons) and keyboardist Tony Hymas. The music has a very hard and rough edge to it, but it isn't heavy metal or hard rock.

There are vocals on two tracks, but it isn't singing. It is like a manic rap. It is strange and very addictive. It is similar to the ending of the Tube's What Do You Want From Life.

Like Beck's Rough and Ready and Blow By Blow, I find the music very atmospheric and absorbing. It is the type than can transport you to a different reality where you completely lose yourself in the music. Your head is spinning when the CD is over.

I can't quite give this 5 stars. There are some sensational tracks, such as the "vocals" Guitar Shop and A Day in the House. The tracks in the middle are also very stunning, getting the most of the keyboard and guitar interaction. But, some tracks are just merely good. Two Rivers is a just mundate New Age type jazz number. Behind the Veil and Sling Shot are fusion type numbers that Beck has done much better in the past.

If you like this, you have to get Jeff Beck Live at BB King's.

If you want to try something along the same lines but a little more melodic but spacy, with longer compositions, check out Francis Monkman Jam.

5 out of 5 stars The seed of memory.......2007-07-17

I courted my wife to the music of this LP the better part of thirty years ago. It was, and is still one of finest collections of ballads and truth's recorded.

5 out of 5 stars Where was I when this came out?.......2007-05-13

I bought this cd because I heard 3 of the songs in Rob Zombies horror movie "The Devil's Rejects." Excellent movie. Now I grew up in the 70's, and I never heard of Terry Reid. But the songs in the movie were pretty good, good enough that they really caught my attension in a horror film. I looked this guy up on amazon, and discovered that the 3 songs I was looking for were on this one record. I ordered it.
I still don't know what to say. I thought, I'd heard just about everything. I'm a musician, and a music history buff. Where was Terry? This album is FANTASTIC! Sorrowful, jazzy, country like blues influenced, with one or two rock songs thrown in for measure. It is one of the most unique and beautiful albums I've ever heard.
It is truly an honestly wrought piece of work about what it was like in the mid seventies.
You know...I'd pay 100.00$ for this record and it would still be worth every penny. An album like this you'll own it forever. I'd like to thank Terry for putting this on the earth for us. He did more than he will ever know. A standing ovation. 5 super stars!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect album!.......2007-01-02

This cd is his shortest cd, but his best one by far. The songs on this album were simply amazing. If you like crosby, stills, nash, and young, you will adore this cd! This album has a very chill mood to it that makes it an instant favorite. Every song on here is a classic. Terry Reid has a mildly raspy, amazing voice. I think Terry Reid is one of the best singers and song writers out there. His singing is powerful yet suttle. And you will highly enjoy this album.

5 out of 5 stars Terry Reid:The best kept secret in Rock !.......2006-07-16

Seed of Memory by Terry Reid is a delightful collection of tunes... Think "California nites with a bottle of wine & trusted company"... The entire cd is solid, with standouts being the title track- Seed of Memory,Brave Awakening, and by far the finest track- To Be Treated Rite ! Terry's voice, along with producer Graham Nash adding vocals, David Lindley playing slide and an uncredited appearance by Joni Mitchell in certain spots- make this perhaps one of the finest records to come out of the 70's- BUY it proudly and Pass on the Knowledge !!!

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!!.......2005-08-21

I've only recently become aware of Terry Reid. I was watching "The Devil's Rejects" and really liked the songs on the soundtrack, not knowing that Rob Zombie used 3 Terry Reid songs. I picked up the soundtrack and after listening to it ad nauseum for weeks,I decided to try to find some Terry Reid stuff. Boy am I glad I did! "Seed of Memory" has not left my CD player since I got it. EVERY SONG IS GOOD. There is not one song on this CD that I skip over. I play it over and over and over again obsessively. I just wish I was around when his music came out initially. I'm 29 and "Seed of Memory" was released the same year I was born (1976....a GREAT year!LOL!). Why can't today's music sound as cool as this?

Stanley Kubrick's demanding perfectionism in all aspects of the filmmaking process has led to some of the most memorable soundtracks of the modern era. Kubrick's taste for the classics led to his scrapping Alex North's original score for 2001: A Space Odyssey in lieu of the "temporary" tracks he had used for editing, turning Richard Strauss' Also Sprach Zarathustra into an unlikely 20th-century pop icon. For his 1971 adaptation of Anthony Burgess's cautionary future-shocker, Kubrick once again turned to the classics. Malcolm McDowell's protagonist Droog Alex's taste for Beethoven is given a nice tweaking by Moog pioneer Walter (now Wendy) Carlos's synthesized take on the glorious Ninth Symphony. Some have complained that the now-primitive electronics involved give it a dated feel. Disturbingly--and effectively--other-worldly is more like it. Kubrick also imbues repertory standards by Rossini and Elgar with dark, frequently hilarious irony, and makes Gene Kelly's sunny reading of "Singin' In The Rain" the underscore to an all-too-accurate prediction of societal nightmares to come. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Prisoner 6 double-five 3-2-1.......2007-03-16

The soundtrack album of CLOCKWORK ORANGE, even with it's simple (and supposedly) outdated Wendy Carlos recordings, holds up far better than the actual film has over these 36 years. This story takes place in the 1990s, and we all know that today's world is nothing like Anthony Burgess' dismal and nightmarish vision . . . don't we?

Most of the CLOCKWORK ORANGE soundtrack's classical selections are by Herbert Von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic. These spirited Beethoven and Rossini interpretations remain some of the very best ever recorded.

The excerpt of Wendy's "Timesteps" is the most compelling piece here. In the film, this stark aural collage is background to Alex's behavior modification. In order to shorten his prison sentence, the violent sociopath is made chemically ill while forced to view scenes of rapine and bloodshed. His sickness can only be arrested by replacing his natural criminal urges with passive thoughts.

It's hard to listen to "Overture To The Sun" without recalling the spotlighted naked girl who tempts an on-exhibit Alex into a state of unwellness that he likens to "wanting to snuff it." His freedom to choose brutality has been taken from him forcefully, through violent reprogramming. The subsequent events that precipitate Alex's restoration into a fully non-functional member of society beset him in a fashion ironically similar to the chaos he once left in his violent wake.

The stark images and perversities of this movie tend to stay with a person. Perhaps watching Kubrick's CLOCKWORK ORANGE has in some way "programmed" the viewer, too, by desensitizing us to the madness that is all around. Maybe this film holds up better than I thought. I must have a glass of choko moloko and reconsider . . .

5 out of 5 stars Kubrick At His Best.......2007-01-11

This is a fantastic Kubrick movie. Based on a novel of equal respect, this movie details troubled youth, violence, and sex in a modern-yet-more-so world. The slang of the young men in the movie is a mixture of British and Russian slang terminology created by the book's author. A must-see for the Kubrick fan out there.

3 out of 5 stars Good soundtrack.......2006-02-20

I own this on vinyl and yes an exellent soundtrack from an exellent movie

4 out of 5 stars Easier to experience than the movie!.......2005-08-17

Having purchased this soundtrack along with its respective CD score (by Wendy Carlos), it is a wonderful installment to any soundtrack fan/buff. The awesome sound of classical music, contained in the CDs, in which director Stanley Kubrick chose for the picture, is so juxtaposing it is brilliant. Even if one does not know a lick of classical music, one can easily suggest this soundtrack as a useful introduction into the genre. Though the film may not be as easy to experience as the music contained inside, the soundtrack stands as a milestone for music in film perhaps only beaten by the director's previous work in '2001 A Space Odyssey'.

5 out of 5 stars Horrorshow Lomticks of Music to do the old Ultra-Violence By. .......2005-07-28

Bolshi Yarblockos, my droggies. Viddy thou this incredible soundtrack from the film A Clockwork Orange. Cued from the novel by Anthony Burgess, the musical selections mainly focus on the Beethoven obsession of the main character Alex, however Carlos's deep knowledge of the classical repetoire and Kubrick's neurotic perfectionism combine to fill out this album. I love most of the tracks here, and have listened to them since 1972.

My personal favorite is the title music of the film, Henry Purcell's "Funeral Music for Queen Mary," a piece so appropriate to the film that Purcell must have been channelling the future when he wrote it in the late 17th century. Carlos's interpretation of this Purcell piece is astounding in its forboding textures and alientating timbres. Electronic tympani have never sounded better - and were never used like this before. Ring modualtions, filter sweeps, phased sawtooth angel trumpets and resonate devil trombones - oh bliss!

I also liked the strange music Kubrick chose - "I want to Marry a Lighthouse Keeper," and "Anthem to the Sun," both obscure and perfect.

Carlos's avant-garde composition "Timesteps" appears in abbreviated form here, and for most listeners this abridgement is enough.

The concluding ironic use of "Singing in the Rain," is wonderful, and after an album (and film) full of electronics, classical music, and weirdness, a standard is shocking enough.

There is a new version of the soundtrack put out by Carlos herself, which includes only her work. Some tracks composed but not used in the film appear here, as do some track used, but not appearing on the OST as well. Timesteps in its 13:37 form is also on this album.

For those fans of Prog rock: Viddy the film when Alex visits a record store: Notice the Vertigo swirl above the main desk, also in the wrecked foyer of Alex's highrise, one of the figures on the vandalised mural has "Suck it and see" written on it, also the name of a Vertigo music sampler of the same era.

5 out of 5 stars Good Old Fashioned American Rock and Roll.......2007-04-11

I saw Terry and the Pirates play at the old Winterland in San Francisco and I was mesmerized. Later I learned that the band was composed of guys from other bands like Quicksilver, Van Morrison, Steve Miller & more who got together for the pure love of the music thus the name - Pirates, behind the songwriter Terry Dolan. The band has a disticntly Western American sound - but NOT country - this is pure Rock And Roll at it's best. Check it out.

5 out of 5 stars Either You Know or You Don't.......2007-03-25

If you're a fan of John Cipollina (and if you ever saw him play live or listened to one of his CDs, then you are a fan - no exceptions,) then you already have half of this CD under the title of Silverado Trail.

If you're a fan of John Cipollina, then you know that it is well worth spending $24.99 for a new CD's worth of material that has been appended to the original CD. Therefore, you have probably already put this in your cart before going on to read my one, lonely review.

If you've had no contact with John, then what are you doing on this page? However fate brought you here, you now have a chance to rectify a great wrong that has been done to you. Order this, listen to it, and like Paul on the road to Tarsus, your life will be changed forever. You will turn into an obsessive, tracking down what little there is generally, commercially available. Amazon has John's Raven (buy the one with the colorful cover as that also has extra tracks) and 1 copy of Problem Child. The easiest stuff to get will be the first 3 Quicksilver Messenger Service CDs: self-titled, Happy Trails, and Shady Grove. There's 1 decent track each in the next two then nothing worthwhile until Solid Silver and an old live show called Lost Gold and Silver. Under The Dinosaurs get Friends of Extinction.

Fate won't bring you here, though, unless your Karma is particularly good. If you're on this page you already own everything I've mentioned. Just in case, though, be prepared for your husband or your wife to start wondering why you are spending all of your time scouring the internet for things nobody else ever heard of. Why you suddenly discovered peer-to-peer downloading. Why your right hand starts vibrating back and forth when playing air guitar, rather than up and down holding an imaginary pick.

How do we get people to link to this? John was the living, breathing essence of Rock and Roll incarnarted in a human. I turned that into a tag and I'm sticking it on everything relevant.

You. You. Who do not know. Your eyes will never see but your ears can still hear. If you don't have problems breathing after it sinks in what you are hearing, then you have no feeling for Rock.

Apologies to Terry and Nick who are great, criminally underappreciated songwriters who gave John some of his best material to work with. And to Nicky, Link, Greg, Gregg, Doug, Roger, Al, and all of the great musicians - especially the criminally underrated Gary Duncan - who supported John in his reach for the stars.
John, who didn't seem to have an ego, always pointed out his co-players to me and he sincerely admired their work. As well he should have. While he did play occasional sets with some less than stellar friends as favors (did I mention what a flat-out NICE person he was?) he also gathered around him the best of the best.

3 out of 5 stars He Needs Stronger Material.......2006-04-18

Tony Terry can blow his head off, but the problem is that this cd lacked hits. 2 out of 9 tracks is terrible. The man deserves better material than that. I would love for him to work with Babyface, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, & R. Kelly. He has a voice that should be making platinum, not lackluster crap.
With You And Everlasting Love are the only two songs that I really appreciate. Oh, wait, I also love Come Home With Me!

He should be dropping hits, not s***!

4 out of 5 stars Tony Terry.......2006-02-27

You won't believe this, but I saw Tony Terry perform with Roberta Flack on Martha Stewart's TV talk show this week. It proves that he's still out there today. Singing with Roberta a classic star in her own right! Which brings me back to this review. Terry's 1990 album is solid R&B at its finest. He had such a beautiful song in With You, a wedding favorite and a well sung classic that stayed on the music charts for 40 weeks or so in 1991. The other numbers are such dynamic songs with Terry singing so superbly. I suggest you get this album soon!

I've been having this album for several years now...I fell in love with Tony Terry's music after I heard him sing I believe it was on Soul Train yeeeeeeeeeears ago! His voice is so perfect-sounding to me...he's definitely been blessed with a annointed talent --- I think he needs to come out with a soul-reaching Gospel cd.....that would probably be the Gospel album of the year! This album offers beautiful love ballads & timeless songs that have never been replaced since the album's release!!!

I STRONGLY recommend this album!!! [seriously]
