There's nothing like a breakup to focus your muse. This follow-up to the stunning, multi-platinum Fallen was penned as singer Amy Lee's troubled romance with bandmate Ben Moody was spiraling out of control, impelling her to craft an anxious record full of recriminations, revelation, and self-flagellation, as she questioned everything that kept her whole. It's a fascinating journey for the listener as she ventures into her own personal heart of darkness, her stricken, perfect voice suspended on an unsteady precipice between breakdown and breakthrough. Despite the loss of two members, including guitarist Moody who left mid-tour in 2003, the album has a maturity, sophistication, and a singular vision that wasn't found in their earlier work. Stately and as exotic as Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti, with its intricate instrumentation, disturbing imagery, and disembodied chorus, The Open Door shows exactly what this band is capable of. "Snow White Queen" is a goth-y alternative to Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together," equally anthemic, but with much more grit and pain. --Jaan UhelszkiAlbum Description

Essentially a live showcase for their mega-selling breakthrough Fallen, this CD/DVD combo set chronicles Evanescence in peak form during a subsequent tour stop in Paris. The performances here lean early on the crunch of guitarists John Lecompt and Terry Balsamo (reaching a peak on the the band's potent cover of Korn's "Thoughtless"), but ultimately revolve around the melodramatic, goth-rooted vocal charisma of singer Amy Lee. It's on stripped-down, yet still larger-than-life takes of "Bring Me to Life" and "My Immortal," as well as the shadowy grace of "Breathe No More," that Lee stakes her claim to the alt.diva throne. Taken as a whole, the forceful renditions here argue that this live recording was hardly premature, instead well documenting the band's more direct musical tack and considerable live chops. The CD contains the appropriately named, previously unreleased studio track "Missing," while the DVD supplements its crisply shot and edited concert performances with four videos and an hour of documentary footage and interviews. --Jerry McCulleyAlbum Description
Evanescence's "Anywhere But Home", captures one night of the magic as cameras entered The Zenith in Paris to capture the phenomenon. The two-disc DVD/CD features Evanescence's sold-out European tour and is offered in both 5.1 and two-track audio mixes. In addition to the live concert DVD, which was directed by Hamish Hamilton (U2, Peter Gabriel), "Anywhere But Home" also includes a CD of the concert presented in a two-track mix, and the previously unreleased studio recording of the composition "Missing." The DVD features the band's four music videos, an hour-long behind-the-scenes program, and some special surprises in addition to the concert film. The special surprises will be discovered by the viewer as they navigate the menus designed exclusively for this special release.Customer Reviews:
Even a 40-something mom will enjoy this.......2007-07-30
I bought this CD because I couldn't find the original album of Fallen where "Bring Me to Life" originally appeared. While this is a live album (which generally I'm not as fond of), the songs definately give you a good sense of what Evanescence is about and whether you will "bond" with them. Now I can't wait to get the other CDs and glad to have found this group and add them to my cadre of anguished chicks.
If you like Annie Lennox and/or Alanis Morisette, then you should like this group. And you will have the added advantage of not being accused of only liking bands from 1985 by your kids...
Three songs not on "Fallen" (or "The Open Door").......2007-07-16
My highest recommendation is to buy all three Evanescence albums to date.
A great set for an Evanescence fan!.......2007-06-19
So what's to like about this CD/DVD set? Let's start off with the CD first. The setlist is the same as any concert during this tour. I personally saw the band perform these songs when they did a show in Florida. It's great to hear the same songs you know and love sung differently. Most of the songs on the band's first album, Fallen, are on here except for "Hello". The two other songs that you may not recognize are "Breathe No More" (a ballad) and "Farther Away" (a harder song complete with an awesome drum and guitar-heavy intro). Both are songs that were written before the band's first album. You also have a cover of Korn's "Thoughtless" (which I personally think is better than the original) as well as "Missing", a track that was recorded pre-Fallen. "Missing" is a beautiful song presumably about suicide. No songs from the band's second album, the Open Door, are on this disc as this was recorded before that album was released.
Now let's move on to the DVD. The DVD contains the live performances of each of the songs included on the CD. It's great to see an entire Evanescence concert with your own eyes (especially for those people who haven't had the chance to watch a live Evanescence show). Highlights include the audience singing the chorus of "My Immortal" and the intro to "Haunted". You then have all four music videos for the singles that were released from Fallen, "Bring Me to Life", "Going Under", "My Immortal", and "Everybody's Fool".
The best part of the DVD is the bonus footage. Highlights include bloopers (on stage as well as press stuff), pranks (mostly from the band's last concert from this tour), and a ton of behind the scenes footage (on the tour bus as well as pre-show stuff).
Now onto the negatives. As for the cd, Amy's voice could be better. There are some pitchy spots that make me cringe but that is expected as most of the band's songs consist of Amy holding out notes and singing in full voice. Other than that, I have no problems with the cd. As for the dvd, the quality of the actual concert is iffy. There's a lot of special effects that take away from the show and way too many shots of the audience.
If you're a big Evanescence fan (or even a casual one), pick up this set. The behind the scenes stuff is worth the cost alone.
CD/DVD Combos.......2007-06-05
Anyway, I suggest just getting the CD of this combo off of a friend or iTunes. Amy Lee has an excellent voice live and has energy. I love this band and I can't wait to see them on the Family Values Tour this summer. At least I don't have to deal with the horrible editing.

Though Rockpile managed only one, nigh-perfect album at the height of the '80s new wave boom, its members--Dave Edmunds, Nick Lowe, Billy Bremner, and Terry Williams--had played together in various incarnations, in some instances for over a decade: Edmunds and drummer Williams had been in the '60s power trio Love Sculpture; all had played on Lowe's '78 album Jesus of Cool and Edmunds's '79 collection Repeat When Necessary. But Seconds of Pleasure became their most complete and satisfying pop statement--if their ironic swan song, as well. This newly remastered collection features the complete original album, as informed and vibrant a tribute to American rockabilly and R&B roots (with an amped-up take of Joe Tex's "If Sugar Was as Sweet as You" and inviting reworkings of Gene Chandler's "Teacher Teacher" and Chuck Berry's obscure "Oh What a Thrill") as any contemporary group has ever managed--especially considering three quarters of the material is either Rockpile originals or contemporary compositions, like "Wrong Again" by Squeeze songwriters/mainstays Difford and Tilbrook. The generous slate of bonus tracks features all four acoustic, live-in-the studio tracks from the Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds Sing the Everly Brothers tribute EP distributed with initial pressings of the LP; two fine live BBC recordings from '77; a cover of Graham Parker's "Back to Schooldays"; a band original, "They Called It Rock"; and a blistering live rendition of Parker's "Crawling from the Wreckage" from one of the band's last appearances together at the Concert for Kampuchea. Though Lowe may now downplay them as "a posh bar band" who "specialized in playing Chuck Berry music four times faster than anyone else," Rockpile was truly one of the great rock bands of their--or any--era. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

+1/2 -- Swansong from legendary UK rock 'n' roll quartet.......2005-09-28
I've gone back and forth on this LP. I found it disappointing upon first hearing it, feeling it didn't compare favorably to Lowe's "The Jesus of Cool" or Edmunds' "Tracks on Wax 4." But over the years I've found the songs to grow on me, and though the CD reissue (and perhaps the original LP) has a somewhat pinched, barely-stereo mix on many tracks, the performances and arrangements hold up. Columbia's Legacy reissue sweetens the original eleven tracks with seven worthy bonuses, including the essential quartet of Everly Brothers songs that were included on a 7" with the original LP. An additional trio of live tracks ("Back to Schooldays" "They Called it Rock" "Crawling From the Wreckage") show how powerfully sloppy the band was as a live act. 4-1/2 stars, if allowed fractional ratings. [©2005 redtunictroll at hotmail dot com]
Still a great big pile of rock (and then some).......2005-09-13
What was puzzling to outsiders about the Rockpile breakup was that it was such a contrast to the upbeat, almost joyous music on their only album under the band name. They rumbled out of the gate with that catchy "Teacher Teacher," with Nick singing in that distinctive British wise-owl voice of his (I never knew it was a Gene Chandler tune), straight into Dave and his high-pitched Welsh warble belting out Toe Tex's "If Sugar Was as Sweet as You" as another sing-song soul raveup. And save for a couple of speed bumps, they kept up the pace for a full album, with the high point being the pure, unadulterated, full-on, boyish "Heart," sung in high spirits (and high register) by bassist Billy Bremner. And along the way, there are also the bar-band bounce of "Play That Fast Thing (One More Time)" and "You Ain't Nothin' but Fine," Edmunds driving home the rock'n'roll grind of Difford & Tilbrook's high-rev "Wrong Again (Let's Face It)," a very Berry remake of Chuck Berry's "Oh What a Thrill," and the overreaching heartache of "Now and Always," a tune that wouldn't have been out of place in Buddy Holly's record collection. "Seconds of Pleasure" was one great big lovable pile of rock when I bought it in college and played it over and over, and 25 years later, it still is. The only things that have aged are the musicians and their fans.
And the bonus tracks make it all the better. The live cuts are OK (all said, I wish they could've licensed their version of "Little Sister" with Robert Plant from the Kampuchea album), but the inclusion of the "Nick Lowe & Dave Edmunds Sing The Everly Brothers" EP, a limited-edition four-song 7-incher from the early pressings of the LP, is just plain wonderful. They paid loving tributes to Phil and Don without trying to ape them, and just to have pristine versions of their incredibly sweetly sad versions of "Message to Mary" and "Crying in the Rain" is worth the price of the CD.
Y'know, every time I hear or see Nick Lowe these days, I get this feeling of sadness. These days, he kills us quietly with his stellar writing and his acoustic guitar. But I remember too fondly the days of Rockpile -- of this album and previous clever Nicktunes such as "Cruel to Be Kind," "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding," "They Called It Rock," "American Squirm" and "Rollers Show" -- and just wish for one more bit of that Rockpile magic. And having the enhanced CD brings back the very same feeling.

You can't go wrong with a trio as versatile and talented as Beck, Bozzio and Hymas. "Behind the veil" is worth the price of admission alone. Also "Savoy" and "Two Rivers". Let's face it. This guy is the best. Noel Redding (Hendrix's late bassist) confessed in an interview that Beck was his favorite. Heck, you needn't interview me for me to say the same. My favorite album of his is "You had it coming". If you're in doubt, go with that CD. And do consider "Who else". In my opinion "You had it coming" is his best. Oops, did I neglect to mention "Blow by blow" and "Beck-Ola"? Excellent illustrations of his outstanding talent.
Hard, metallic, and rough.......2006-04-26
The great thing about Jeff Beck is that he is always experimenting and pushing the boundaries. The difficult thing is that you never know what you are going to get with a Jeff Beck CD. You might love one of his styles and hate his others. Many people who like Beck's pop music (especially the days he was with Rod Stewart) or his jazz fusion, hate this CD.
This is a trio of Beck, Terry Bozzio (from Frank Zappa and Missing Persons) and keyboardist Tony Hymas. The music has a very hard and rough edge to it, but it isn't heavy metal or hard rock.
There are vocals on two tracks, but it isn't singing. It is like a manic rap. It is strange and very addictive. It is similar to the ending of the Tube's What Do You Want From Life.
Like Beck's Rough and Ready and Blow By Blow, I find the music very atmospheric and absorbing. It is the type than can transport you to a different reality where you completely lose yourself in the music. Your head is spinning when the CD is over.
I can't quite give this 5 stars. There are some sensational tracks, such as the "vocals" Guitar Shop and A Day in the House. The tracks in the middle are also very stunning, getting the most of the keyboard and guitar interaction. But, some tracks are just merely good. Two Rivers is a just mundate New Age type jazz number. Behind the Veil and Sling Shot are fusion type numbers that Beck has done much better in the past.
If you like this, you have to get Jeff Beck Live at BB King's.
If you want to try something along the same lines but a little more melodic but spacy, with longer compositions, check out Francis Monkman Jam.

I still don't know what to say. I thought, I'd heard just about everything. I'm a musician, and a music history buff. Where was Terry? This album is FANTASTIC! Sorrowful, jazzy, country like blues influenced, with one or two rock songs thrown in for measure. It is one of the most unique and beautiful albums I've ever heard.
It is truly an honestly wrought piece of work about what it was like in the mid seventies.
You know...I'd pay 100.00$ for this record and it would still be worth every penny. An album like this you'll own it forever. I'd like to thank Terry for putting this on the earth for us. He did more than he will ever know. A standing ovation. 5 super stars!!!!!

Stanley Kubrick's demanding perfectionism in all aspects of the filmmaking process has led to some of the most memorable soundtracks of the modern era. Kubrick's taste for the classics led to his scrapping Alex North's original score for 2001: A Space Odyssey in lieu of the "temporary" tracks he had used for editing, turning Richard Strauss' Also Sprach Zarathustra into an unlikely 20th-century pop icon. For his 1971 adaptation of Anthony Burgess's cautionary future-shocker, Kubrick once again turned to the classics. Malcolm McDowell's protagonist Droog Alex's taste for Beethoven is given a nice tweaking by Moog pioneer Walter (now Wendy) Carlos's synthesized take on the glorious Ninth Symphony. Some have complained that the now-primitive electronics involved give it a dated feel. Disturbingly--and effectively--other-worldly is more like it. Kubrick also imbues repertory standards by Rossini and Elgar with dark, frequently hilarious irony, and makes Gene Kelly's sunny reading of "Singin' In The Rain" the underscore to an all-too-accurate prediction of societal nightmares to come. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
Prisoner 6 double-five 3-2-1.......2007-03-16
Most of the CLOCKWORK ORANGE soundtrack's classical selections are by Herbert Von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic. These spirited Beethoven and Rossini interpretations remain some of the very best ever recorded.
The excerpt of Wendy's "Timesteps" is the most compelling piece here. In the film, this stark aural collage is background to Alex's behavior modification. In order to shorten his prison sentence, the violent sociopath is made chemically ill while forced to view scenes of rapine and bloodshed. His sickness can only be arrested by replacing his natural criminal urges with passive thoughts.
It's hard to listen to "Overture To The Sun" without recalling the spotlighted naked girl who tempts an on-exhibit Alex into a state of unwellness that he likens to "wanting to snuff it." His freedom to choose brutality has been taken from him forcefully, through violent reprogramming. The subsequent events that precipitate Alex's restoration into a fully non-functional member of society beset him in a fashion ironically similar to the chaos he once left in his violent wake.
The stark images and perversities of this movie tend to stay with a person. Perhaps watching Kubrick's CLOCKWORK ORANGE has in some way "programmed" the viewer, too, by desensitizing us to the madness that is all around. Maybe this film holds up better than I thought. I must have a glass of choko moloko and reconsider . . .

Horrorshow Lomticks of Music to do the old Ultra-Violence By. .......2005-07-28
My personal favorite is the title music of the film, Henry Purcell's "Funeral Music for Queen Mary," a piece so appropriate to the film that Purcell must have been channelling the future when he wrote it in the late 17th century. Carlos's interpretation of this Purcell piece is astounding in its forboding textures and alientating timbres. Electronic tympani have never sounded better - and were never used like this before. Ring modualtions, filter sweeps, phased sawtooth angel trumpets and resonate devil trombones - oh bliss!
I also liked the strange music Kubrick chose - "I want to Marry a Lighthouse Keeper," and "Anthem to the Sun," both obscure and perfect.
Carlos's avant-garde composition "Timesteps" appears in abbreviated form here, and for most listeners this abridgement is enough.
The concluding ironic use of "Singing in the Rain," is wonderful, and after an album (and film) full of electronics, classical music, and weirdness, a standard is shocking enough.
There is a new version of the soundtrack put out by Carlos herself, which includes only her work. Some tracks composed but not used in the film appear here, as do some track used, but not appearing on the OST as well. Timesteps in its 13:37 form is also on this album.
For those fans of Prog rock: Viddy the film when Alex visits a record store: Notice the Vertigo swirl above the main desk, also in the wrecked foyer of Alex's highrise, one of the figures on the vandalised mural has "Suck it and see" written on it, also the name of a Vertigo music sampler of the same era.

Either You Know or You Don't.......2007-03-25
If you're a fan of John Cipollina, then you know that it is well worth spending $24.99 for a new CD's worth of material that has been appended to the original CD. Therefore, you have probably already put this in your cart before going on to read my one, lonely review.
If you've had no contact with John, then what are you doing on this page? However fate brought you here, you now have a chance to rectify a great wrong that has been done to you. Order this, listen to it, and like Paul on the road to Tarsus, your life will be changed forever. You will turn into an obsessive, tracking down what little there is generally, commercially available. Amazon has John's Raven (buy the one with the colorful cover as that also has extra tracks) and 1 copy of Problem Child. The easiest stuff to get will be the first 3 Quicksilver Messenger Service CDs: self-titled, Happy Trails, and Shady Grove. There's 1 decent track each in the next two then nothing worthwhile until Solid Silver and an old live show called Lost Gold and Silver. Under The Dinosaurs get Friends of Extinction.
Fate won't bring you here, though, unless your Karma is particularly good. If you're on this page you already own everything I've mentioned. Just in case, though, be prepared for your husband or your wife to start wondering why you are spending all of your time scouring the internet for things nobody else ever heard of. Why you suddenly discovered peer-to-peer downloading. Why your right hand starts vibrating back and forth when playing air guitar, rather than up and down holding an imaginary pick.
How do we get people to link to this? John was the living, breathing essence of Rock and Roll incarnarted in a human. I turned that into a tag and I'm sticking it on everything relevant.
You. You. Who do not know. Your eyes will never see but your ears can still hear. If you don't have problems breathing after it sinks in what you are hearing, then you have no feeling for Rock.
Apologies to Terry and Nick who are great, criminally underappreciated songwriters who gave John some of his best material to work with. And to Nicky, Link, Greg, Gregg, Doug, Roger, Al, and all of the great musicians - especially the criminally underrated Gary Duncan - who supported John in his reach for the stars.
John, who didn't seem to have an ego, always pointed out his co-players to me and he sincerely admired their work. As well he should have. While he did play occasional sets with some less than stellar friends as favors (did I mention what a flat-out NICE person he was?) he also gathered around him the best of the best.
