One Stormy Night.......2007-06-08
I purchased this way back when on a 33 1/3 record and had always wanted to get the CD of it. Listening to the CD brought back all the old memories of how relaxing and great the music was. I think the recording level could have been better as much of the time you are only listening to the rain fall and when some of the orchestra selections begin it is nearly impossible to hear it without turning the sound up (then down).
Still, a great CD!!
The rain, the train and other things.......2007-03-12
ONE STORMY NIGHT was a landmark album. Released in 1965, this was a first time attempt to blend music and nature sound effects, specifically, a California thunderstorm. The album was a great success, and spawned a whole series of MYSTIC MOODS LPs over several decades. Another "first" this one can lay claim to is the earliest use of a fully transistorized mixing board.
At various moments throughout ONE STORMY NIGHT, thunderclaps, cloudbursts and other sounds blend perfectly with the tone of the songs. The orchestrations are appropriately restrained and pensive. A sound collage of freight train and rain is quite effective, as well. This is still a most lovely set of easy listening music, and is highly recommended.
Incredible Innovative for Time.......2007-02-16
First heard this music in the 60's -- it is still wonderful and
innovative and emotional. I never tire of listening.
nighttime.......2007-01-16
old album but the best mood music ever i still love it even if it is 30 yrs old
One Stormy Night- Great Plains Nostalgia.......2007-01-12
"One stormy Night" captures the essence of the nostalgic side of life on the Great Plains in the 40's and 50's. The audio backdrop is a slow moving thunderstorm enhanced by the lazy, soft music of the Mystic Moods Orchestra
punctuated by occasional loud claps of thunder and enhanced by the distant barking of a hound and the lonesome wail of a steam locomotive's whistle.
The theme is versatile- solitary relaxation, romantic background music, or
the last sounds before dropping off for a nights sleep. It's an essential element of anyone's collection.

This Shouldn't Be Getting Good Revues.......2007-01-03
All my revues are strictly from a listeners point of view, and this CD is not good from a listeners point of view. I haven't seen the show, and I feel other revues of this CD are based on having seen the show, which isn't fair. This CD isn't complete for one thing. The London cast, although I don't own it, nor have I ever listened to it, at least has the full score. But the main horror are the singers on this CD. They are just bad. People are turned off musical theater from CDs like this. I urge you not to buy this CD unless you are a collector, or have seen this show and want to hear a bad version. This is not for new listeners or even mature listeners looking for new musicals... this is not good. I don't know why people keep giving this CD more than three stars. The lyrics are decent, cute and funny, but the singing is unforgivable. Favorite song (only because I put one in every review): "Poor Sweet Baby"
I love the music.......2005-02-21
I got to see a one day benefit with Sutton Foster, Hunter Foster, ANn Harada, Christian Borle, Jennifer Cody and Deven May. That cast far outclasses this one AND the London one. Both casts are awful. The music is adorable, but that cast is so bad that it majorly brought down this rating. Buy the London one because it has more songs but if you buy either version, be wary of the awful casts.
Not to sing an old tune but..........2004-07-26
I have to be boring and agree with nearly everyone else. These are not the best versions of the songs. I recently saw the Snoopy Musical in the New Players Theatre, Charing Cross, London and it blew me away. Yes, it's light humour and couldn't possibly be described as deep, but it is still thoroughly enjoyable. I would give the show 5/5 stars and the London singing 6/5 stars. This recording is amusing and has most of the best songs, but the singing isn't quite up to scratch (and isn't even "singing" in parts). Good, but sadly not great.
Snoopy is good, but London's is better........2003-06-22
As a theatre teacher, I have both versions of Snoopy! I recommend the London Version because there are more songs on the recording that are now in the show. Its a good cd if you are looking to hear the original but this cd has piano accompanment only! London's has a band.
From a SNOOPY Expert.......2003-06-20
I'm one of the few lucky (?) souls that have had the opportunity (?) to be a part of SNOOPY: THE MUSICAL. I was Linus, complete with blankie and wisdom beyond my years (?). Yes, praise me, praise me, I endured SNOOPY...but I also bought the CD. Perhaps only a nerd would have the constitution to participate in and then buy an everlasting reminder of this schizophrenic little show.
Still, it's a sweet, subtle production with no social relevance and little ability to inspire anyone. It's nothing more than a vaudeville of Charles Schultz characters that is supremely difficult to be successful with. I mean, please, how plausible is a quintet of 5-year-olds singing about "Edgar Allen Poe" anyway? Still, once you've hurtled the point of annoyance, it's suddenly easy to appreciate the delicious rhymes employed and the hidden maturity of the themes and, sometimes, of the characters (cough cough, Linus).
Why only three stars? Because this recording is inferior to the London recording. I've only heard the other once, but it's an instanteous reaction: realizing that only a rethinking of the original can improve the whole. First, this CD only has piano accompaniment vs. the other's small band. It's surprising how different (and more entertaining) a small ensemble can make of this show. Also, this CD omits "The World According to Snoopy--Reprise" and "Snoopy's Song" for no good reason. The performances aren't particularly appealing either. I found Snoopy's unrefined, wobbly voice unsuited for the dry character and almost cowardly (believe it or not). Linus isn't all too great (I should know, remember?) and suffers from the same lack of confidence that Snoopy does. Not even the famous Pamela Myers could redeem this recording for me: she's too much of a screamer even for the caustic Peppermint Patty. I did like Sally, but she has little material to sing, unfortunately.
So, yeah. Buy the 1983 London recording (it even has some extra songs written for it!). It really is a quaint, lovable little piece that is perfect for children and children-at-heart. Just think...a musical about characters we all can't help but loving. Almost brings a tear to my eye.

Customer Reviews:
One of America's great songwriters.......2001-03-09
Amid the Cole Porters, Irving Berlins and George Gershwins of the world, Harold Arlen tends to be forgotten. And yet, when the greatest song of the 20th century was recently voted on by a distinguished panel of critics, whose song came out on top? Mr. Arlen's (Over the Rainbow). Here is a superb cross section of Harold Arlen songs by a cast ranging from Judy Garland to Bing Crosby to Ethel Waters, spanning decades and spanning a wide range of styles, from jazz to ballads, poignant to funny. Although the sound is not ideal, as many of the recordings date from the 30's and Pearl's objective in remastering has always been to achieve the fullest musical sound rather than to reduce surface noise, this is a minor complaint given the rich and mind-opening selection of great music found here.

Album Description
I focused on my favorite places across North Carolina and traveled there for inspiration. Using my guitar, Celtic whistles and piano I composed 14 songs. Later other layers of instrumentation were added including cello, violin, hammered dulcimer, flute, saxophone, bass, organ and percussion by a group of outstanding musicians.
Next, I took a digital tape deck and returned to many of these spots and recorded natural sounds that reminded me of these treasured locations. I have woven together many of these sounds into the fabric of the songs. Sounds of waterfalls, rushing rivers, tin roof rain, migratory songbirds, tundra swans and distant trains add a vibrant thread of realism to the melodies.
What a warm and "Peaceful Journey" this has been for me! Thank you for traveling with me for sojourns at Ocracoke, Montreat, Kanuga, Lake Mattamuskeet, Bath, Roan Mountain, Roaring Gap, Morganton, the Roanoke River, Grandfather Mountain and other locations.

Truly a peaceful musical journey.......2005-05-06
A beautiful piece of work and such a wonderful representation of North Carolina. With each play, you hear something you did not hear previously. The combination of music and natural sounds sets a mood that is very unique. Bill Leslie is known to us in North Carolina as a trusted reporter and native of our great state. He is also a very talented artist. A Peaceful Journey is a unique experience.
Peaceful Journey is incredibly soothing........2004-12-13
"Peaceful Journey" by Bill Leslie is one of the most pleasant, soothing and melodic albums I have ever heard. Integrating natural sounds with original tunes written for flute, acoustic guitar, cello, violin, piano and hammered dulcimer, Leslie has created a masterpiece honoring the North Carolina landscape he loves so much. This CD is a perfect companion for a long road trip or a peaceful evening at home.

There are many positive reasons for getting the complete Peer Gynt music, as opposed to just the two suites. In the first place, if you like singing, you get the vocal parts. There's also a lot of really fine and exciting music that's not included in the suites. On the other hand, if dialogue in Norwegian makes you crazy (there isn't really that much of it), you might want to stick with the more traditional excerpts. This performance of the complete score is excitingly detailed, and extremely well played and sung by all the participants. I enjoy hearing the music in both forms, depending on my mood; perhaps you will too. --David Hurwitz
Amazon.com
This 1988 account from Herbert Blomstedt and the San Francisco Symphony is rich and dramatic. Here is a conductor with a real feel for the music, and in his hands Grieg's multimovement score shows its emotional depth. The reading is well paced and brilliantly played, and London's crew provides a high-impact recording, very forward and with excellent detail. --Ted Libbey
Customer Reviews:
A must for Grieg fans.......2001-06-04
Because Grieg is one of my favorite composers, I was delighted to get the complete incidental music to Ibsen's play and not just the standard Suites 1 and 2. Blomstedt and the San Francisco Symphony do a fine job of conveying the many moods of Grieg's masterpiece. Listeners need to be prepared to hear singing and dialogue in Norwegian, but its inclusion gives the performance an operatic feel. For those of you familiar with Suites 1 and 2, give a listen to "Peer Gynt Hunted by the Trolls", a highly dramatic work;then, listen to the solemnity of "Blessed Morn" and "Solveig's Cradle Song". I think this CD will enhance your enjoyment of Peer Gynt all the more.
I fell in love with the voice.......1999-04-28
Not much of a vocal fan (I'm into Bach & Mozort intrumental) I was scanning through the titles of this CD for the well know Mountain King part. It's all good & very professional, but when I heard the voice of Mari-Anne Haeggander in the track Solveigs' Song I was bowled over and very much reconciled with vocal music.
She mix's a perfect technical mastery with a just enough human touch to make it reall. The tiny imperfections when her voice goes up a big interval make it just perfect. Ceclia Bartoli (singing Mozart) was my favorite, but now Mari-Anne is.
I'm now urgently looking for more of her recordings, without luck so far. Pleas help.

Failed Ideas.......2004-12-09
Maureen McGovern is a national treasure. Her Naughty Baby CD to me is the 2nd coming of Christ. By comparison Out of this World is quite disappointing. Mostly either Harold Arlen or MM's uninspiring interpretations and/or Renzi's arrangements don't seem to suit MM on this CD. The drums and percusion are sometimes schlocky. The screechy sax is always terrible. Also not working for me are the electric keyboard/synthesizer, the electric guitar and the cello. Even Renzi's piano playing is sometimes a let down. Jay Leonhart's great bass work seems to be the only thing that you can depend on here. Did MM do this to herself or is Renzi mainly responsible? Spend your money instead on: Naughty Baby, The Music Never Ends, The Pleasure of his Company and Christmas With MM. All wonderful music.
Simply Exquisite.......2003-12-01
I'd forgotten what a beautiful, supple vocal instrument McGovern has. Here, she sings blues- and jazz-flavored tunes, torchy ballads, and more--all Harold Arlen--including "It's Only a Paper Moon," "Over the Rainbow," "Let's Take a Walk Around the Block," "The Man That Got Away" and "Come Rain or Come Shine." Her "Optimistic Voices" (from The Wizard of Oz) is worth the price of the entire CD. It is simply exquisite, like a fine jewel, polished and gleaming with feeling.
