Banjo player Bela Fleck has a world-class set of chops and a willingness to follow his muse wherever it takes him. The band ranges far and wide once again on the The Hidden Land it opens with a Bach Fugue, delves into swing, has a bit of bluegrass, does progressive rock, and jets to several other locales. But the everything-and-the-kitchen sink concept is still considerable more streamlined than 2003's Little Worlds, an overproduced and under-focused three-CD set. Highlights here include Fleck's pickin' on a progressive country stomp called "Weed Whacker" and the playful "Couch Potato," which has a hyper edge that doesn't match the sedentary implications of the title. The band's telepathic interaction is highlighted on the Middle East-influenced "Chennai," where musical lines are played in unison or tossed back and forth, making the song crackle with energy. The broad aesthetic and restless sonic changes might be a bit much for some, but a patient survey of this album will be rewarded. --Tad Hendrickson

5 out of 5 stars Fresh, Innovative, Fleck.......2007-02-21

The band started to get carried away with guest appearances (Outbound, Little Worlds, etc.) that it was almost unbearable and overwhelming. Their compositions suffered because instead of something designed for specifically the Flecktones, other things came out of the woodworks (not to say that all of it or any of it was bad, but it was almost too much).

When I listen to this album, not only does it feel more original and fresher than anything I have heard Bela and the Flecktones do (at least after listening to their older albums for long spans of time), but this album just has a more intimate and naturally revealing side of the Flecktones. This is an album that will make you think, "Wow I was not expecting that! I kind of like it! Give me more!" and the more you listen to it, the more you feel like you are on the same page as them. This is a more mature album, not one for someone who does not already know how Bela Fleck speaks, so please do not listen to this as a novice listener, it sends a false first impression. The music is more jazz-like than before, and all of the songs flow together. The Flecktones take the listener on an epic adventure like none of the albums have really done before. With the major peaks (in my opinion) being the transition from Fugue to P'lod, Labyrinth, Weed Wacker>Couch Potato>Chennai, this album hits hard from the getgo.

I have always wondered, what will they do next? Bela plays guitar on here, Futureman plays a lot more acoustic drums (which is soooo refreshing), Jeff plays the flute quite a bit, and Victor is always amazing. This album keeps the Flecktones in my top five best bands of all time; The Hidden Land is indeed another album that leaves the listener wanting much more, just like the others. Although, I really like this style the most, I hope they produce more of this gold.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable listening........2006-12-09

After several Flecktones albums (including 2003's ambitious triple CD Little Worlds that found the act collaborating with all-star guests including Derek Trucks, Branford Marsalis, and Bobby McFerrin), the group chose a back-to-basics approach for its latest release "The Hidden Land".
The disc solely features the Flecktones quartet, comprised of bassist Victor Wooten, percussionist Roy "Future Man" Wooten, and saxophonist Jeff Coffin. Together, the band expertly hones its trademark combination of bluegrass, jazz, funk, and rock influences within a more spacious and stripped-down environment.
The band has been together for 17 years, always trying to find the right next thing to do and not repeat themselves.
Having a lot of guests playing with them was an incredible amount of fun, but if they were to continue along that path, they would become very predictable.
Banjoist Bela Fleck hooks back up with his longtime backing group The Flecktones featuring longtime electric bass stalwart Victor Wooten. Their music is a mix of Americana, funk grooves and jazz and makes for pleasant if unchallenging listening. After opening with a brief Bach classical composition, the group moves into "P'lod in the House" which kicks the tempo up with pulsating electric bass and funky drum breaks. Wooten's bass is an active presence in almost every performance on this disc, especially on "Labyrinth" where it underpins pensive sounding flute and saxophone solos while scatted vocals bubble just underneath the surface.
There's a brief acoustic interlude on "Who's Got Three" with unamplified banjo (fingers scraping quite audibly on the fretboard) and clarinet taking center stage. Funky bass moves back into the forefront with the upbeat "Weed Whacker" with some quick pickin' and bouncy saxophone. "Subterfuge" gets a little more adventurous as the band jumps the rails of its comfort zone with an electric guitar solo, before ending things on a back-porch note, pickin' the banjo and tootin' on the flute for "The Whistle Song." Jam band fans will find a lit of grooves to like here, and while I found myself wishing that they took a few more chances, the album does make for pleasant if unchallenging background music.

1 out of 5 stars A Great Imitation of Their Own Style.......2006-11-18

Reading between the grooves, it sounds like there was a contractual obligation to produce a new album. Great playing. Innovative compositions. It's hard to pinpoint why these great musicians somehow just didn't manage to get this bird in the air. However, nothing about it really inspires, entertains or surprises.

5 out of 5 stars Pleasant (newly defined) mix of genres.......2006-11-02

This was my introduction to Béla Fleck and it served me very well. It's supposed to be very different than previous albums (more jazzy) and this is absolutely well done. I find it magnificient! You should have a (at least small) taste for jazz sounds, otherwise, "Hidden Land" won't work for you.

Not all songs are good, but what do you expect? I like most: Rococco, Kaleidoscope, Weed Whacker and The Whistle Tune.

Buttom line: In my view, Béla Fleck's sound and melodies have evolved for the better in the past years. It's getting more unique every time. I like it!

2 out of 5 stars Flashes of greatness........2006-09-25

I have to say that this is without a doubt their most uninspired and unoriginal album yet. The first few tracks are really bad, as bad as "The Ballad of Jed Clampett" (I thought they got all that out of their system?). Maybe it will grow on me, but I think with repeated listens I will become more and more bored with it. I will say that as the album moves on, it gets better and "Misunderstood" is definitely the high point on the album (Too bad it takes so long to get there). I have a really hard time recommending this album especially considering their ridiculously strong output leading up to it. Here's to hoping their following is looking better for the mighty Flecktones.

Look for _Outbound_ or _Little Worlds_ instead.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful and helpful!.......2006-04-09

The Quiet Thoughts CD, 1 of 4 audio CD's in the Mental Medicine Collection, gently guides me to focus and slow down my thinking. Her calming voice explains how to quiet my mind and how to be present with my environment. My entire body is relaxed as this occurs. It is truly a soothing and calming experience. I highly recommend it for anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Quiet Thoughts: The Mental Medicine Collection.......2006-02-21

I've ordered all four of the audio CD's in the series - Sacred Moment, Sleep Ease, Non-Thinking and Quiet Thoughts. Described as " ... to heal and slow down a busy mind'. My reviews of each are similar in their praise and satisfaction. They are 4 terrific guided meditations. I've personally found it difficult to meditate without some assistance and rarely have time to go to a meditation center, many of which have limited sessions. What I was searching for was a guided meditation that could guide my positioning and mental focus and then provide soothing music to sit with. There are two components to each CD, talking with background music and then a period of just music. I've tried other similar CD's but didn't use them for long because, for some reason, I just couldn't get relaxed by the audio portion. That was not the case with these CD's. Pakvilai's gentle soothing voice is so beautiful and relaxing, I never tire of listening to it. The timing (about 30 minutes) on each CD is perfect for the morning before work and before going to bed at night. These CD's will work well for both beginners and experienced meditators. The music background on each CD is different and truly relaxing.

Quiet Thoughts focuses on learning how to slow down your thinking. It starts with basic guidance and flows into how to be present with what you are doing and your surroundings and how to quiet your mind and keep it at ease. She guides you on how to relax your entire body. As she speaks, she pauses just long enough for you to digest what's she's said and then moves on.

Non-Thinking focuses on learning the freedom of non-thinking. Pakvilai varies her introduction and guidance enough so that each CD is different and refreshing. In this CD she focuses on your mind and how to follow your thoughts at they arrive and leave, then how to focus on non-thinking - by focusing on breathing, your body feelings and the present moment. She guides you on how to detach from your thoughts during meditation, just by letting your thoughts gently flow in and out of your mind as you observe them arriving and leaving.

Sacred Moment focuses on finding present moment awareness. It starts with basic guidance and flows into a wonderful description on how to bring your focus to the present moment and keep it there when thoughts arise. She guides you to think about each moment as being sacred and how to feel still, calm and free.

Sleep Ease is all about getting you so relaxed you fall asleep. The introduction is different in that you are instructed to lay on your back. This CD focuses t getting you to relax your entire body. Pakvilai gets you to the point of feeling like you are as light as a feather and floating on a cloud. She slowly guides you to focus on your entire body, part-by-part, from head to toe. I've found this particular CD invaluable on those days when I'm under a lot of stress and can't easily fall asleep or sometimes when waking up in the middle of the night with a monkey mind, I listen to it to put me back to sleep.

4 out of 5 stars Great movie, better soundtrack.......2007-05-19

I just recently saw this movie and the only thing I could think about afterwards was that I had to get this soundtrack. I'm not usually a big fan of movie soundtracks, but this cd is unlike any other out there, soundtrack or not. The use of strings and carnaval type instruments is completely unique and makes this a must by for any fan of music.

5 out of 5 stars great collection of unusual music.......2007-05-07

Rented the movie on reccomendation from Netflix, it was pretty good. But the music was the star of the show. The soundtrack follows the course of the movie pretty closely, it's kind of like listening to the movie. Each track brings to mind a specific scene in the movie. One of the highlights is the ecclectic treatment of Burt Bacharach's "Close to You". Most will remember the super-sweet Carpenter's version, but this interpretation was the main reason I bought the music. Unusual augmented chord progressions and almost minimalist format (complete with the mechanical background sounds made by the female jack-in-the-box-like, life-sized, mostly metal toy dressers) make the tune as captivating as in the movie when they 'convert' the trapped Helena into the black princess. Great music to play while relaxing, too.

5 out of 5 stars Supurb.......2007-03-08

This soundtrack is truly a delight to listen to. It ranges from quirky circus music to deep and melodic mysterious tunes. It is a great CD to relax to and to use as background music for most any relaxing time hanging out with friends.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2007-02-24

This is a very good soundtrack to a very good movie. The music is amazingly composed and is nice to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2007-01-17

This CD is excellent! All the music from the movie in its entirety, all the songs are complete songs, and the songs are all top notch compositions.

Great for massage and energy work... Clients love it. They are zzzzzzzzz in moments.

5 out of 5 stars In a state of languid contentment.......2007-07-07

If you know the name Gandalf, you've probably seen the Lord of the Rings films. Or perhaps you're a longtime fan of Tolkien's tales of Middle Earth. Chances are, though, that unless you've been following the New Age music scene, you've never heard of Heinz Strobl.

He's one of several musicians from the 70's and 80's that grew up with Tolkien and took his musical persona from what until Star Wars came along was the most popular fantasy "franchise" in the English language. And so we have David Arkenstone, still active today and named after a mystical gem; Shadowfax, one of the first groups to record for Windham Hill and named after a sorcerer's horse; and Gandalf, the sorcerer himself.

Like the wizard for whom he is named, Austrian Heinz Strobl has a masterful command of the elements, which he employs to great effect on his latest recording, Lotus Land. Featuring nine original compositions, the album is a literal one-man show, with Strobl playing acoustic nylon and steel string guitars, electric pedal-guitar, bouzuki, saz (a kind of lute), electric sitar, piano, keyboards, percussion, and programming.

Conjuring blissful images of tranquil gardens, or perhaps a heavenly realm of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, Lotus Land is a collection of serene, languid melodies suitable for either. Half the compositions are performed without rhythmic accompaniment, and of those with percussion two are so understated as to be missed. Even so, the melodies themselves have enough rhythm and movement to accompany a yoga workout.

Six of the album's eight tracks clock in at over 6 minutes, giving the artist plenty of space to develop his themes. Most of the songs begin with light synth effects, creating the aural canvas on which the lead instruments paint their pictures. Among the highlights are the piano climax of Love Opens the Gates, the synthetic choral effects on Mystic Voyage (that might remind some of Randy and Pamela Copus' 2002), and the charming interplay of sitar and oboe on Life is Love.

Lotus Land is Gandalf's 19th release in a professional career that began 26 years ago as a prog-rock hippie. While time may have softened his approach, his sorcerer-like instrumental and production skills are still as sharp as ever, if not better and more refined. I look forward to a monumental 30th anniversary release in 2011.

Embark on a musical journey into the mysterious and forbidden land of vampires, werewolves and witches. This powerful, eerie and darkly romantic soundscape offers 21 tracks of symphonic orchestrations, gothic choirs and haunting sound effects, inspired by Bram Stoker's classic novel, Dracula.

5 out of 5 stars NOX ARCANA THE ULTIMATE MOODLIFTER.......2007-06-27

Theres not enough words to put down on what this group means to me....I wirte some of my best works by their music.

4 out of 5 stars Vampire country.......2007-05-10

Books don't usually have soundtracks. "Dracula" definitely didn;t.

But when listening to Nox Arcana's "Transylvania," all I could think of was Bram Stoker's quintessential vampire, and the hauntingly creepy atmosphere of the book. The band forms plenty of rich neoclassical tunes, around a hazy storyline about (what else?) vampires.

It opens with a creepy organ, some smooth violins sweeping up from behind. A deep voice intones, "Darkness descends upon the land, wrap the world in night's black embrace... the restless dead stir within their ancient tombs, and creatures born of shadow rise to quench their savage hunger..." Imagine Bela Lugosi rising from a coffin.

It's followed up by some warmup songs -- the darkly enticing "Voyage," which expands out into an epic, eerie sweep, and the ghostly piano of "Gossamer Mist." The songs that follow are just as richly imagined -- ghostly fast-paced strings, magnificently dark organ and grim gypsy music, laced with church bells, shimmering vocals and ghostly little breezes.

Listening to "Transylvania" is like walking slowly through a cobwebbed, shadowy castle, and listening to Dracula playing a pipe organ in a dusty ballroom, with his brides singing accompaniment. It's not too hard to imagine that you're Jonathan Harker, after hearing songs like "Echoes From the Crypt."

Their music is an lush dusty tapesty of gothic instrumentation. Rich, hollow organ, shimmering harp, strings both windy and rapid, fast-moving percussion, a delicate piano, and some dark shimmers of keyboard all blend together into haunting slow-turning melodies. And as if that weren't good enough, they sprinkle the music with the flutter of bat wings, church bells, ghostly murmurs, and delicate music-box tinkles.

Fortunately Nox Arcana doesn't wreck all this eerie atmosphere with typical singing. Instead we get the occasional deep-voiced intonations, sort of like the introduction. And there are some delicate female vocals -- they murmur softly one minute, only to rise into echoing, wordless solos the next. It's absolutely stunning.

Nox Arcana's "Transylvania" does a brilliant job of capturing the ideal vampire-gothic atmosphere -- creepy and beautifully refined, with no kitschiness. The ideal soundtrack to Bram Stoker's classic (not to mention Halloween).

5 out of 5 stars This soundtrack drains your blood dry, it's that awsome!.......2007-01-28

I have this one, its great. It's not only good for Halloween but its good for when you go to sleep at night, it actually puts you into another realm of dreams and nightmares. It helps you sleep and not only that, it gives you something to relax your body with. It's very good for one of those stormy and rainy or snowy nights. I am an artist and I use it to create monster theme pictures and other creepy drawings. It helps me put myself in that state of mind were I can listen to this and let my imagination flow. If you like this one you will really love the CARNIVAL OF LOST SOULS, WINTER KNIGHT. I still have to get the winter knight one. These soundtracks are classics, not that many peopl listen to them. They are for the soul purpose to escaping the real world and entering another of the bizzare and strange. They are just good to listen too, when ever you feel like it. But this is a good tool for some people who have trouble sleeping at night. But if you listen to the children of the night, and what lovely music they made, you will deffently get your money's worth on all 3 cd's Translyvania, Winter Knight, Carnival of lost Souls... It's worth it.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Halloween Fare.......2006-11-01

You can hear a constant improvement in the musical quality of Nox Arcana's CD. This one, particularly, is a big step over Necronomicon. Not that Necronomicon is bad, but Transylvania is really good.
I'm glad I found Nox Arcana (quite by accident, I did a search for Halloween on Amazon and this was one of the hits) they are a treasure.

5 out of 5 stars Yet another great album!.......2006-08-11

Nox Arcana is truly a original band for the era. The music is never boring and you always find something new when listening to it that you may not have heard before. Vargo is a very gifted artist in all the work he does and I for one am glad he formed his own band. The creative work behind the cd's really comes through not just in the music but in the album designs. Midnight Syndicate lost one of the most creative person's behind their success, but by starting the band Nox Arcana at least none of the fans are suffering. Keep up the great work and I look forward to the next album.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-10-29

This CD provides practical instruction for walking the razor's edge of the present and developing present moment awareness, essentially turning every activity into a meditative state. I alternate between this CD and the "No Thinking" CD on a regular basis. As I mentioned in my review of "No Thinking" -- I like to let the CD run its course... and when it's finished, I usually continue to meditate for another 15 or 20 minutes, embracing the silence around me.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful and helpful!.......2006-04-09

The Sacred Moment CD, 1 of 4 in the Mental Medicine Collection, helps me to concentrate on finding and experiencing my awareness of the present moment. The author does an amazing job of describing how to reach an awareness of the prestent moment and how to remain there. She gently portrays each moment as being sacred. She also does a wonderful job of explaining how to be calm and free.

The music background on each CD is different and truly relaxing.

Sacred Moment focuses on finding present moment awareness. It starts with basic guidance and flows into a wonderful description on how to bring your focus to the present moment and keep it there when thoughts arise. She guides you to think about each moment as being sacred and how to feel still, calm and free.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Salute to America.......2006-07-27

Very similar in quality and music to I Love A Parade and a very upbeat reminder of why we are a patriotic nation. The arrangements and quality of the songs are great.

4 out of 5 stars A good choice but..........2005-06-29

It is not the best CD that I have bought but it is an honest one. The orchestration is good, the choice of tunes is excellent and the tunes are well played. As you know, it is always difficult to say : I like it or I hate it because hearing a CD is a question of personal point of view. In my case, I may not say that I like it or I hate it, I prefer some other orchestration but it us a good CD.

2 out of 5 stars Ho-Hum.......2005-06-08

I wanted some rousing marching music. This album is half asleep. The sound quality is poor. Apparently Mr. Williams writes better music than he conducts.

5 out of 5 stars "Boston Pops".. Alway's do the Job!.......2001-10-03

John Williams/Boston Pops.. Salute to America.

And they do! They salute America! This is a wonderful C.D
Battle Hymn of the Republic, is great..

New York, New York, will bring tears to your eyes!
12 renditions in all..

All these are performed wonderfully, and well worth the money!

I would recommend this to anyone who loves patriotic music, it will stir the heart and soul of Americans....

5 out of 5 stars Full-Spirited.......2000-09-02

I'm a classical music/opera person for the most part. But I find this CD entralling. Even the organization of the CD is ideal-almost like a symphony--with the rousing Candide Overture and the musical medleys at the beginning, the patriotic songs as the B section, and the Dixieland and other music from American musicals to finish up. And I particularly like the orchestration of the medleys. A wonderful CD.

4 out of 5 stars Mill. Classical review.......2007-05-13

This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.

4 out of 5 stars classical music for the unitiated.......2007-04-01

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

4 out of 5 stars Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

5 out of 5 stars A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-03-08

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

In some ways, singer-songwriter Patti Smith seems an unlikely choice for a full-bore anthology. After all, she's had only one charting single with "Because the Night." Even at that time, most people probably were more familiar with Gilda Radner's spot-on parody of her on Saturday Night Live than with Smith herself. Yet her influence both on the fledgling NYC punk scene and as a protofeminist poet renders her something of an American counterculture icon. As such, Land (1975-2002) serves to frame an uncompromising career spanning four decades. Split over two discs and featuring 31 tracks and almost two-and-a-half hours of music, Land begins with a survey of Smith's studio albums, relying most heavily on 1978's Easter. All the greats are here--"Dancing Barefoot," "People Have the Power," "Gloria," "Rock 'n' Roll Nigger," "Frederick," and of course, "Because the Night," plus a newly recorded version of Prince's "When Doves Cry," one of two songs cut specifically for this collection. The second disc is where fans--who were solicited for track selection input via gigs and the Web--get the goods. Early demos, among them 1974's coveted "Piss Factory," plus two other pre-Horses recordings, "Redondo Beach" and "Distance Fingers," kick things off. What follows is a batch of previously unreleased live recordings--"Dead City," "Spell," "Boy Cried Wolf"--most captured during a 2001 tour through the U.S. and Europe, and studio outtakes. Smith herself helped remaster the recordings while stacking the accompanying booklet with fans' photos and the like. Land probably won't spark a Smith renaissance, but loyalists can marvel at an artist who's never turned a fast buck by easing up on the sweat, tears, hunger, and integrity that inform every one of these tracks. --Kim Hughes

4 out of 5 stars Album review.......2007-07-13

Aside from the occasional song on the radio this was my first real exposure to Patti Smith and I have been impressed. Disk 1 is especially good, disk 2 is more out there but is worth a listen.

4 out of 5 stars Nice concept; good set of songs.......2007-05-20

Patti Smith burst onto the rock and roll scene in the mid-1970s. Her album "Horses" created a sensation, just as "Easter." The concept for this album is rather intriguing. CD # 1 is a standard set of "greatest hits." CD # 2 is replete with demos, live performances, and alternate versions of songs, adding an interesting dimension to the 2 CD set. Smith has a unique voice and style; if one's eyes were blindfolded and one of her cuts was played, you would know who was singing, without having to depend on looking at the CD being played. Some reflections on the collection:

"Gloria" is a great Van Morrison song, but Smith makes it her own. Among the earliest lines is the great set of words:

"Jesus died for someone's sins--
But not mine."

Her unique voice makes this a fascinating cover. When she spells out "G-L-O-R-I-A," the effect is compelling.

"Because the Night" (a Smith-Springsteen song) is one of her more accessible songs. The backing instrumentation is terrific. Some great lines:

"Because the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to us. . .
Love is an angel disguised as lust."

"Ain't It Strange" features nice guitar work. Her almost hypnotic voice holds the listener's attention well.

"When Doves Cry" features some interesting lines, such as:

"The sweat on your body";
"They feel the heat between you and me";
"Why must we scream at one another,
This is what it sounds like when doves cry."

The simple instrumentation makes this cut awfully effective in counterpoints to Smith's singing.

The demo version of "Redondo Beach" is kind of neat. The version isn't quite the same as the final recorded effort, but it is nonetheless interesting. Some poignant lines:

"A girl washed up on Redondo Beach.
Poor little girl, everyone cried,
She was a victim of sweet suicide."

Not uplifting, but an intriguing, dark song.

There is also a live version of "Birdland." The spare instrumentation works well; the song lasts over 9 minutes but the time moves by quickly.

Finally, there is a song that does not show up in the printed material. The Broadway song, "Tomorrow," is sung for Smith's mother. An interesting live version that is simply lots of fun.

So, all in all, a worthwhile 2 CD set. One gets to listen to some of the best of her standard works, as well as live versions and demo versions of others.

4 out of 5 stars Patti Smith: Punk, Poet, and Pee Fetishist.......2007-04-24

No compilation could ever serve as a substitute for Horses (1975) and Easter (1978), Patti Smith's two masterpieces. But since her work has been spotty in the nearly three decades since the release of the latter, the 2-disc collection Land: 1975-2002 is very much welcome. Rock fans are right to revere Smith for the quality and influence of her early work, but just as right to be skeptical of most of her other records. Still, an artist such as her could never really make an entirely bad record, so her releases between 1979 and 2000 are sprinkled with quite a few worthy tracks.

Not surprisingly, Horses and Easter are the best represented discs on Land. In a few cases, however, the tracks are presented in demo or live form. The most effective use of a live version is that of "25th Floor", which was recorded in the same year that its parent album (Easter) was released. The many other live tracks on Land are from 2001 shows, and originally appeared - with the exception of "Birdland" (from Horses) and "Notes to the Future" - on her late-90s and 2000 albums. Among the highlights from her lesser studio albums are Radio Ethiopia's "Pissing In A River", Wave's "Dancing Barefoot" and "Frederick" (dedicated to her beloved Fred "Sonic" Smith), Dream of Life's "Paths That Cross", "Summer Cannibals" from Gone Again, and "Glitter in Their Eyes" from Gung Ho. Of particular interest is Smith's 1974 debut single "Piss Factory". This is a worthy inclusion for its historical value, but equally so for its musical quality. On the other end of the spectrum is a new studio recording, "Higher Learning", a lengthy but solid jam featuring fine clarinet work by Smith. Other noteworthy inclusions are a new cover of "When Doves Cry", the U.K. B-side "Come Back Little Sheba", and "Wander I Go", featuring Tom Verlaine and Jeff Buckley on electric and acoustic guitar, respectively.

Overall, Land ably covers Patti Smith's first 27 years as a recording artist. As with any collection, fans and critics can bicker over what is and is not included. My only complaint is in the latter category: "Walkin' Blind", from the excellent Dead Man Walking soundtrack, would have been a nice addition to the second disc. But even though the second disc lacks this song, and even though Disc 2 consists of lesser-known songs, the fact is that both discs are equally worthwhile. To forgo Easter in favor of Land would be a mistake, but to forgo Horses would be a crime. Once one has those, however, Land can pretty much bring the listener up to speed. (And just so you know, her 2004 release Trampin' was her best album since 1978.)

5 out of 5 stars Why Must We Pray Alone? So Sings Patti..........2007-03-08

A great flowing retrospective with enough for the newcomer and the veteran...like myself, seeing Patti many times in the early days of Piss Factory with John Lennon and her Avery Fisher Hall dates etc. as Horses 1st hit New York.
Disc 1 Patti says was chosen by the listeners, collecting great tracks throughout the albums with the addition of 'When Doves Cry" that "song" popularized and written by Prince.
The 2nd disc is another matter collecting Piss Factory, demos
and live tracks making it a necessary get for fans.
The booklet, photos, are all grand making this a + experience and a good initiation to her entire catalogue.

The search for solace involves a difficult reconciliation of conflicting emotions, pitting one's need to grieve at odds with a heavy-hearted realization that life, however diminished, must go on. Using an audio palette of grays and dark blues, Michael Hoppe offers Solace as a balm for the soul during such times, "where the dark clouds in life give way to the glow of eternal hope and peace." The clouds never fully lift during the 12 tracks of Solace, which appear to progress in a stages-of-mourning manner. The effect can be moving, even lovely (particularly the grand orchestral opener, "The Majestic Land," one of four splendid selections involving the Prague Symphony -- recorded remotely via an Internet link, of all things). The prevailing mood is melancholy but not quite maudlin; two angelic arias ("Pie Jesu," which Hoppe had written for the memorial service of his wife's mother, and "Lachrymosa") are tearless, reverent expressions that aspire to the divine. The closing moment of "The Parting," a retooled but otherwise ordinary composition from 1986 that involves Vangelis, finally yields a sense of closure. For those in a state of bereavement, Hoppe's Solace may offer you comfort. --Terry Wood

First track could be a county's anthem, very nicely performed. The remainder of album is inspiring, and much like Hoppe's other works.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Music to Work and Meditate to.......2006-10-19

I am seldom so overwhelmed with the beauty of a piece of music that I'm moved to tears. This does just that to me. Each track is as meaningful and beautiful wrought. Powerful stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Heartbreakingly Beautiful.......2006-09-16

Michael Hoppe is a treasure. From his earliest recordings until his latest, Requiem, I have never been disappointed. Solace does not have one track that you will skip over. The soloists, where there are vocals, are superb and speak straight to the heart. Occasionally we are given a musical gift that lasts us a lifetime. This is one of those gifts.

5 out of 5 stars A New Age Gem.......2005-09-05

This is a beautiful collection of New Age music that should please fans of the genre. Perfect for listening alone or with others. The music is soothing at times, but at others, is fervent and burning.

The first piece of this recording ("The Majestic Land") is like a throwback to "The Big Country." This being my first impression, I thought every other piece was going to sound like movie soundtracks. But no, the second piece proved me wrong. "So You" was like an unworded song of love, eternity, and promise. By the time of the third piece, you'll be burning with the passion and desire of the strings in "Romance for Violin and Orchestra." The pieces afterwards more or less delve into that rich and sometimes otherworldly territory that is New Age, reaching again into a certain height with "Jude's Theme" and "Nimbus," then coming into a prayerful respite in "Pie Jesu." These pieces are what really make up the theme of "Solace."

The last piece called "The Parting," is a very good piece for dispersing all that left-over burden we accumulated in a day's time. The first time I heard it, and afterwards, I felt like I was in the calm, sunny waters of the Greek sea, and swimming among majestic whales!

There is something for everyone in this recording. Solace does not necessarily mean to be alone, and the music here proves that it can be listened to in the solace of lovers, or a dear friend.
