Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

Please buy it.

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

4 out of 5 stars Music of the people.......2005-04-23

On Eagles Wings is most definatly inspired.... Latin Music is great if you understand itm but I have not heard any conversations in Latin lately. The most important aspect of liturgy is the participation of the assembly and if the assembly (or most of it) does not understand what is being sung or said What's the use? Catholic Tradition is great kept alive on CD for those who want to walk down memory lane but it is a Vatican 2 church......deal with it or get out and join one of those rougue churches that say mass in Latin and stop trying to move backwards. There is nothing more powerful than a singing actively participating church.......let's not stiffle the voice of the Body of Christ.

Hello, this music is good but it is not haunting, mysterious,Otherworldly,or timeless like Gregorian Chant or The Latin Mass now all I can say is that we as catholics threw out 1400 years of beautiful music for junk like "On Eagles Wings".Though To the person who said they prefer this to the pre-vatican 2 dirge music you are very close-minded and devoid of art and beauty and judging by what you said you are part of what I call the weak generation of Catholics who are only catholic on paper and have no sense of history for your very beautiful and mysterious church. Most people from that generation see the catholic church only after vatican 2 and you forget about the past councils and teachings of the Catholic church and it's history,I mean there is a reason they kept it so long it was for it's goodness(if it was bad it would not lasted 1400 years) as a priest on EWTN said to those who say "That is so pre-vatican 2" "So was Jesus." You see Latin Is very Beautiful and Mysterious language and it is a very catholic thing I mean whats more catholic then Gregorian Chant or the Latin Mass it's timeless like the church itself we as catholics need to start reclaiming are heritage from the likes of liberal priest and bishops of the 60's generation regardless of what they say there do as you please Mass is not in the spirit of Vatican II which allowed the use of vernacular in the Mass but it did not intend for Latin and Gregororian Chant to disappear it said to preserve it and give it, it's proper place that is what has been the intention of every pope since including this one they have all encouraged the use of Latin and Gregorian Chant in the mass.
How can anyone one not like it,it's very beautiful and it's been around for 1400 years how can one say that singer songwriter stuff which no one will remember in 50 years be better then this it's like seeing heaven and saying you prefer the world(alot of people unfortunatly do this.) Though to ansewer the question of it being to sad yes it is very somber and mournful but thats because the sacrifice of mass is a very solemn ceromony it was never meant to be celebrated in rock or jazz or polka or any other abuses by certain clergy. If alot of these ignorant catholics only knew what took place at the mass they would understand. You know you should be proud of the fact you are catholic because we have many gifts the protestants don't have(In the sacrements, the liturgy, the art and the music.) So I say to you now even you prefer the vernacular have respect and appreciation of what came before you in are Holy Catholic Church. Oh by the way I am 19 about to be 20 and Vatican II was a good thing it retouched are faith as Cardinal Francis Aziz said. Though I believe many people misinterpret it.
I suggest watching EWTN alot or really studying your faith and I like both Novus Ordo And Tridentine Rite.
More of a rant not a review but these songs have there moments and there are many Vernacular songs I like.

Dominus Vobiscum.
Et Cum Spirtu Tuo.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Traditional Hymns.......2004-05-30

It sounds like you are in Church, and that is what I was looking for. I especially like the Ye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones, Peace is flowing like a river, and Let There Be Peace on Earth.

Some of the other songs were better done by other artists. Like Shepherd Me is done better by the original Marty Haugen. This version is good, but not as good as Marty's. And I was not particularly fond of this version of Amazing Grace.

Overall I would recommend you buy a copy for your collection. The songs which are good, are very good.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2004-04-01

This CD was not at all what I expected. It sounds just like you are in Church. Every song is accompanied by an organ and most of them sung in soprano. The tempo of all the songs is very slow too! I was looking for something I could sing along to, not put me to sleep! On the positive side, there are some beautiful songs, I just wish they were sung more "up beat".

4 out of 5 stars Yes, these are great Catholic songs.......2004-02-07

I grew up with the music of the St. Louis Jesuits and this CD is a good representation of the BEST. In the spirit of Be Not Afraid, I am Near You, on Eagles Wings are all songs I loved in high school, college, and adult life. We sing most of these songs regularly at Mass. These are pleasant renditions of inspirational songs that uplift - in my opinion they are far better than much of the dirge music pre-vatican II.

2 out of 5 stars Great voice, but..........2005-03-28

30 years ago I bought a Jon Lucien album based on what I read about his great voice. I remember liking only one or two songs, thinking maybe it was just a bad album, but yes a great voice and a lot of potential. Then I forgot all about him. So here he is again after all these years...and listenning to his songs here and on other albums, it brings back the same impression I had back then. What a waste of talent! To all of his female fans out there, I apologize. Yes, the voice is amazing, but the songs in my opinion are really bad. I say this only because one song - "When The Morning Comes" - is perhaps one of the most beautiful songs I have even heard. I thought so 30 yrs ago, and I still think so today. It is stunning. Which is what makes hearing the rest of the songs so disappointing. Who was this guy's agent? Bad song selection is one thing - but over an entire career? Sorry, but I would have taken Jon Lucien down a totally different musical path than the one he took.

5 out of 5 stars RED LIGHT SPECIAL !.......2002-02-06

In more ways than 1, my "double entendre" title refers to both the soulful romantic quality of Jon Lucien's voice with the "Caribe meets Brasil" idiom he performs which was perfect musics for the 70s parties that used always wind down to the red light going on, and the "lovers carrying on". Also the fact that this is a "3 recordings on 2" cd "special issue bargain", as like when the red lights go on for "K-Mart" shoppers in the USA! K-tel shoppers never had it so good with their "golden oldies" as you will with this bonus pack!

This cd chronicles Mr Lucien's first 3 recordings in the States, and reflects the musical growth of JL as both performer and composer and musician.

His deep rich vocals are enough to melt the heart(mostly females, hehehe), and his vocal frasing is steeped in the jazz tradition filtered through his island experience(He is born from Tortola, British Virgin Islands) and his affinity for quasi-authentic Brasilian samba, bossa and MPB ,the popular music of Brasil).

The cd features musics from his highly orchestrated and heavily bossa influenced "I am Now"(1st lp), the transitional "Mind's Eye" and the recording that I feel defines Mr Lucien, "Rashida".

His recordings gradually shifted from the relatively "straight" readings of standards (Jobim's "Dindi" and "Insensitez",a bossa version of Cole Porter's "Love for Sale", Ma Cheri Amor...) to the wordless frases that he would use to launch some soaring frase-ology.
For me, though his vocalise charms me especially as he uses "Brasilian style" syllables more often than carribean or scooby-dooby-ooby style jazz vocalise--it is obvious that Brasilian styles have influenced JL immensely).

"Rashida" is all of the 2nd cd, and it is a hidden treasure, a previously lost and Ignored gem.
The cd moves effortlessly from track to track as Lucien glides through the sambossas ballads, and light funk .There is also a hint of Bob Marley or "lovers" reggae styles here and there, but never breaking out into "full reggae" mode..

VERY SUBTLE is the best way to describe Mr Lucien's recordings. A mix between Terry Callier, Michael Franks, Shawn Phillips and Tom Jobim is maybe another way to convey a feeling that the the musics on this cd have.

But the honey rich tones of Mr Lucien's voice are his calling card.

No weak tracks at all--- give a listen to this underappreciated singer/composer/guitarist.

(By the way, his chordal approach to the violao is completely brasilian, both in ritmo and chord voicings, no 3- 4 chord root position triad "strumming" for JL, he comps like a Brasileiro!

Buy the cd, you wont be disappointed for a minute. never enough stars to say..

5 out of 5 stars If You Thought You Were Good.......2007-04-23

This will make you throw your guitar away . Vinnie Moore's first release is still amazing 20+ years later . This raised the bar for everyone when it was new . This is one of the best shredder albums PERIOD .

4 out of 5 stars superior neoclassical shred.......2007-02-24

First of all, I give this album four out of five because I didn't care for a couple of the songs, not for Vinnie Moore's guitar-playing. I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could. This guy smokes, and you simply will not find a better neoclassical player out there--including the great original, Malmsteen. Most of these songs blow the doors off, and that's the strength here: Moore's songwriting ability generally matches his technical skill. Tommy Aldridge supports on drums, and he easily matches Moore's skills with some superior double-bass drumming that, when this album came out, very few on this planet could duplicate. Tony MacAlpine plays keyboards, and, although he's a great guitarist in his own right, his keyboard skills are more-or-less second to none. Overall, a great neoclassical album.

5 out of 5 stars Shrapnels best, maybe the best rock instumental period!!.......2006-01-22

i have owned quite a bit of Shrapnel and other labels' so called "guitar albums", but this may be the best of them all. i am a drummer, which may be why i love this release so much, since Tommy Aldridge shows his masterful chops on this gem. however, the entire cast of players contribute masterfully to this work of art. it will literally give you a chill on certain tracks (musicians know what i'm talkin' about), and leave you in awe. take my word for it, get it now. you will not regret it. this cd is the must have of all must haves (does that make sense?) anyway, check it out. peace.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Neo-Classical Fusion.......2006-01-14

This is the quintessential work fusing classical structure and melody with the energy of metal. It's as if Bach, Mozart, or Beethoven were composing metal music today. Highly technical, but always melodic, intelligent, and memorable, this album's positive energy is contagious and inspiring. Even the rhythm guitar tracks are noteworthy. Moore's genius is evident, and has yet to be duplicated.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Best In The Last 20 Years!!.......2005-10-20

Vinnie is a great guitarist and composer, no doubt about it.. But what makes me think that this is a wonderful guitar album is that, after having forgotten this album on the shelf among many others from the same era for.. say 15 years, i suddenly put it back in the stereo.. and guess what, the melodies are still somewhere deep inside my mind and easily coming out.. Note by note, everything on this record has been written in my brain unlike many other albums from the same era.. what's more, they don't go away.. after listening to this album once, i keep repeating it in my head for another 24 more hours.. amazing.. Let me say this though: This album means a lot to me, as it takes me back to those teenager years when music and guitar were like what life was all about.. But I doubt it will mean the same for anyone else who will buy and listen to it today.. I'm just here to share my enthusiasm and send a special thank you to Vinnie

Oh! I almost forgot to mention Tony MacAlpine's awesome work with the keyboards on this album.. yes.. those who know him as a guitar virtuoso only, will be surprised that his main instrument originally is the piano, and he's %50 the reason i won't miss the Steve Vai+Breed show in Saklikent, Ankara, November 19th 2005!!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Soothing and Refreshing.......2007-07-20

Like the sweet aroma of Grandma's apple pie, Tillman's music subtly flows into the nooks and crannies of our conscious awareness without demanding our deliberate attention. The purity of Tillman's music is like a relaxing massage of our souls. GREAT WORK!

5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2007-03-16

I absolutely love this CD. Have other Tillman as well, he is a master.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful CD from the talented Martin Tillman.......2006-06-04

I love this CD! Those who may be familiar with Martin Tillman from his CDs with Michael Hoppe, The Poet and Afterglow, won't be disappointed with this CD of piano and cello music. Since first hearing him in 1997 on Hoppe's The Poet, I have been waiting for Tillman to record his own CD of cello music. Tillman, a classically trained cellist, plays both piano and cello on this multitrack CD.

The CD features, with the exception of one piece, Tillman's own compositions, and these are varied and interesting. Some are deep and brooding, as in Eileen, while others, bassalino and tangobay, are up-beat with latin rhythms. The piece, bachwards has a Bachian/jazz feel to it, with piano plucked cello and snare drum. My own favorite is white oleander, a very haunting piano and cello duet. Tillman's fine solo piano work is featured in, is it me or the moon passing. The piece february in mazuria was written while on a visit to his wife's native Poland and has a very classical feel to it. Tillman's own liner notes give us insight into his musical journey from Zurich to Los Angelus.

If you are looking for some cello music that is not classical, yet is soulfully brings out the qualities of this most wonderful stringed instrument, then this CD is worth buying. Very highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Best Album Of A Great Band.......2007-02-12

Knowing the story of the Comsat Angels, of their years of commercial disappointment and frustration, it's remarkable that near the end of their career they would produce such an outstanding album as My Minds Eye. At this point, there was little hope that they would ever score a hit single; maybe that's what freed them to just create great music. To those familiar with the earlier Renascent releases, the sound has evolved here; the post-punkness is virtually gone (this album having been recorded in 1991). Steve Fellows' emotive vocals shine through, especially on Always Near, Magonia, and I Come From The Sun. Other great tracks are Shiva Descending, with its slight Mid-Eastern musical hook, and the catchy Field Of Tall Flowers. But then all the songs are good. By all rights, this brilliant album should have been topping the charts and the band showered with acclaim. Consider yourself lucky that you have come across it here...and don't hesitate to buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Ear Pleasing Journey.......2007-07-02

Wow, this is an incredible journey through many different styles of music. Thomas Dolby doesn't disappoint, from the almost primordial sounds, to more modern swing-funk. It also includes a soothingly beautiful love song. This cd offers something for everyone. It has a very cathartic, ending also. The movie is just as good and they go beautifully together or as a separate entity. A must for anyone's collection.

4 out of 5 stars I cant find the dvd... but the music is all I need!.......2005-07-11

I got the cd for free because my dad drinks pepsi.he "bought" it off I tunes and burned it onto a cd for me, thus a b-day present.I really enjoy this cd now. I was surprised that he dosent sing very much in it ( nuvouge is a singer)and i find the beats easy to find and very helpful if you are strugling through Strings class.I really enjoy it now, and like most of his music, I can go to sleep to it.( look at my about me section!)

    5 out of 5 stars I have a word for soundtrack haters..........2004-05-04

Okay. Let's start this off at the beginning. When I was in 3rd grade, I was fascinated with the original "The Mind's Eye" movie. So, naturally, when I figured out there was another, I begged my mom to let me rent it. That is when I fell in love with the music. It was excellent. It enthralled me like no music ever had. I found it to be imaginative, creative, and very pleasing. I wish to address the author of the "This is a "Soudtrack", not a Thomas Dolby album proper..., September 28, 2003" review.
I disagree with everything you said in your review. You are entitled to your opinion, but I strongly disagree. This is a spectacular piece of work. Also, I strongly suggest actually seeing the movie before you dis the soundtrack.

3 out of 5 stars This is a "Soudtrack", not a Thomas Dolby album proper..........2003-09-29

I have confess to have never seen the accompanying video to this, partially because I found the "soundtrack" to be a bit disappointing. Aside from the couple of exclusive Dolby vocal tracks "Nuvogue" and the wonderful "Valley of the Mind's Eye" there is little to get excited about. Uninspiring instrumentals and even more uninspiring tracks with a guest female vocalist are about as packaged and predictable as a McDonald's Happy Meal. This coming from an artist who has produced a relatively brief, but otherwise execellent body of work, is surprising considering his (assumingly) penchant for perfection.

5 out of 5 stars Thomas Dolby in top form.......2001-01-23

The Gate to the Mind's Eye was put together from various computer generated animations. However, the glue that holds these pieces together is Thomas Dolby Robertson's incredible score. Some of his best works can be found here, from the haunting "Voyage of the Mind's Eye" and "N.E.O.," to the techno-ish "Big Bang Backwards" and "Quantum Mechanic," to the wild ride of "Nuvogue." One wonders if the music was matched to the animation or vice-versa: it's that good of a fit. Worth getting for the soundtrack alone.

I was first enthralled with the music from this movie when I was in third grade. It was fascinating to me. The animation was superb, and the music only added to my enjoyment. So, naturally, I wanted to own the soundtrack. But I've never been able to find it. I wrote to Miramar around 4-5th grade, and they sent me back a letter telling me I could buy the soundtracks. I recently discovered that the company was no longer.

      Album Description

Those of you who are familiar with Ms. Gallinger's (gal -in-jur) vocal tribute to Bill Evans in 2000 may recognize the title of her new release as a side ways reference to the landmark 1959 Miles Davis/Bill Evans recording Kind of Blue. Just kidding though, because this project is a 180 degree departure from her Evans tribute. It is in fact, kinda blues, kinda jazz, and kinda rock. A melting pot of many of the influences that helped form Ms. Gallinger's artistic sensibilities. This live recording features Gallinger doing what she does best: entertaining a crowd. The show starts off with an energetic blues shuffle. Followed by a sensual rendition of Peel Me A Grape. Born Under A Bad Sign, one of the great hard luck anthems, is admirably countered by a swinging version of It Ain't The Meat It's The Motion, while a bass ostinato sets the groove on the Bill Withers song Who Is She. Gallinger's Storytelling abilities take us through the hilarious If I Can't Sell It ( I'm Gonna Sit Down On It). Things pick up as she expounds further with I Can't Take You Nowhere. An understated Crossroads features Wabich playing the snare drums with his hands as the sound textures are layered to great effect. Doodlin' is an easy 4/4 swing, and the set ends pitchin' a Wang Dang Doodle. Gallinger's career runs the gamut from guitar playing folksinger in the 70' to pop rock diva in the 80's, toss in a little Puccini and a bit of Cole Porter and you have an extremely diverse musical palette. Attracted by the challenge and expressive depth of jazz, she developed a style that draws on all of these elements, and when combined with her rich contralto voice it gives her a signature sound and approach that are unmistakable. This latest offering is a glimpse at yet another side of this creative artist who, according to Bill Kohlhaase (O.C. Weekly) "...gathers you into her head as well as her soul." Funny , angry, broken hearted, or hopeful, music has a story to tell, and Gallinger is a gifted storyteller. One part triumph, two parts heartbreak - shaken, not stirred.
