5 out of 5 stars Elixer? What a Sweet Potion it is!.......2006-09-03

Hard to believe they could ever outdo themselves after an awesome debut like "Between The Sheets", but this is a real masterpiece. From the opening title track, right on through, this album never disappoints. It has a little bit of everything - smooth jazz, funk, bop. I can listen to this for hours and never grow tired of it. Hard to decide which is my favorite track. "Magic Carpet Ride" grabbed me and hooked me right off the bat - it starts with a smooth Bob James intro and then, Bamm!, Lee and Harvey are cooking up a storm. "Whisper in My Ear" is a dynamite Jazz/Blues track that just grows on you. Phil Collins does a great guest shot on "Why Can't It Wait Till Morning". The Foursome blends absolutely perfect on the closing track - "In My Corner". Really, every song on this CD is outstanding. I've been a fan of each of these guys as solo artists and as sessions players, but this is where they were meant to be. I have all of the CD's by this group, including the post - Ritenour one's and they are all excellent, but in my opinion, "Elixer" is the best of Fourplay. Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars mmmmmmm, sweet!.......2005-01-06

"Elixir" is my second favorite Fourplay album. I got turned onto them from my father. He had bought their first album and I really emjoyed it. Each time they came out with another one, I picked it up. Elixir came along and blew me away! One of my favorite smooth jazz CD's. The other Fourplay CD I really like is "Yes, Please". I have a review on that one also. If you want the definitive collection of Fourplay, get all of them, up to "Heartfelt". "Heartfelt" is OK, but they seem to be going in another direction with their music. I wouldn't recommend "Journey". "Elixir" is a definate "must have" for the smooth jazz fan!!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2004-08-26

I heard this CD in 2001 and whenever I need to enjoy the moment whatever that is..I listen to this, it helps me let go of the stuff we carry around all the time, it puts me in another place and that can't be bad.

5 out of 5 stars All Stars of Smooth Jazz.......2003-03-25

You can't complain when you put Lee Ritenour on guitar, Nathan East on Bass, Bob James on keys and Harvey Mason on drums. The kings of smooth jazz all joining together to form Fourplay, and release another incredible album in "Elixir". The musicians have been successful on their own, and when mixed together, it is hard not to put out something of this caliber.

The album is packed with good smooth jazz, mostly written by the guys in the band. There are some exceptional gems here like "Magic Carpet Ride" with some great solos from Ritenour and James. Phil Collins lends his voice and his lyrics to "Why Can't It Wait Till Morning", which is well done by the band and Collins' voice is very fitting. The title track is very jazzy, and what a great sound from Ritenour. "Play Lady Play" is a little more funky and allows East to step forward and slap his bass around a bit. "Licorice" also has a good sound.

I was pleased with this release from Fourplay, and it gets a lot of airplay from my smooth jazz collection. Fourplay is definitely a band worth pursuing, as well are each of the guys in the band. I have been a large fan of Ritenour and came across his work with Fourplay in pursuing him. His solo stuff is exceptional, and I recommend his Wes Montgomery tribute, "Wes Bound".

Album Description

Former Tristania mastermind, Morten Veland returns with another ingenious album while bringing a fresh sound into the rock and gothic scene. The epic songs and symphonic arrangements on An Elixir for Existence surpasses the high standard set with his striking debut At Sixes and Sevens. Terje Refnes' elegant Sound Suite production provides charm throughout without taking away from its heaviness.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Lovely Album.......2007-03-28

A very good album. Their nothing in this album that would really dissapoint the listener. The lyrics are very well written as well as the music. Morten vocals are very powerful in this album. I love Henritte vocals, even though she wouldn't sing a lot, but its really good. Favorite song out of it is Lithium and a Lover amd Euphoria.

4 out of 5 stars Lacuna Coil doesnt have anything on Sirenia! (4.3 stars).......2006-07-05

This album is very enjoyable and relaxing with some good heavier part thrown in. Which is how good Gothic Metal should sound. Not like the processed commercial sound that pathetic excuse for a Gothic Metal band Lacuna Coil has.

This album is exactly what you would be looking for in a Gothic Metal band. Good, growly Black Metal vocals coming from a male, and a sweet symphonic angels voice coming from a beautiful female singer, along with some good guitar riffs and cool yet relaxing electronic, keyboard, and piano sounds. Theres even some violin play in the songs!!!

The only thing bothering me about this album is the structure of all the songs go in the same pattern. Growly vocals, then clear. Or growly, clear, growly, clear. The songs become predictable in that vocal sense. But in every other aspect this album is a fine example of todays Gothic Metal. I strongly reccommend it.

Suck it up Lacuna Coil. You lose.

5 out of 5 stars DAMN!!.......2005-10-18

Wow! Morten Veland is a genius. For a man to make such as awesome of a comeback after leaving Tristania as he does, Morten forever holds my respect. This is the perfect goth metal album. I have been looking for this sound for years. The music sends chills up my spine, maintaining that metal sound, yet adding so many things in the background, such as violins, chilling keyboards, Gregorian chants, and orchestrations. The vocals are done in the beauty and the beast technique, combining female vocals with high and low-pitched growls. This is a must for any fan of Tristania, Theatre of Tragedy, Sins of Thy Beloved, and even Nightwish or Within Temptation.

3 out of 5 stars THE SIREN'S SONG.......2005-07-31

First of all, I want to say that this band is very appropriately named. Sirens were the part-woman part-birds (sea nymph) that sang sailors to their doom by misleading them. And the cover art to this album (all of their albums, in fact) IS misleading. With sirens being female and a female being shown on the cover, one would think that this is another female-led band like Within Temptation or Nightwish.
Not so!
Fortunately I read the Amazon reviews before I bought it, so I didn't get misled. I was hoping for a female-lead for this group, since that's what it looked like at first, but I also don't mind growling every now and then. And to Morten Veland's credit, he growls his lyrics coherently. I've seen too many bands with lyrics written down and then when they sing them it's like "agjalghuahjühahg!!!"
As for the female singer, she only sings about two or four lines per song, even if she gets a song all to herself (Save Me From Myself). She's not bad, but she can't compare to Tarja from Nightwish or Sharon from Within Temptation.
There are only three songs on this CD that I liked: "Lithium and a Lover" has great, catchy background music and good lyrics, male growling, female singing, and a choir. This one is my favorite.
"In My Darkest Hour" has some great guitar work at the beginning and they repeat it about halfway through the song.
"The Fall Within" has background music that sounds almost exactly like that from "Lithium and a Lover", but of course I liked that track so much that more of the same doesn't really hurt.
And that is where my main complaint with this CD lies. I got that annoying sense of Deja Vu when I listened to the background music on several of the songs. They started to sound the same, some of them. And the other songs were not up to my standards. I do appreciate though that they have a purely instrumental piece at the end. Not a very good one, but at least they tried.
If you like growling, the groups that I like to listen to and consider my standards are: Finntroll, Einherjer, and Within Temptation. If you like female vocals more than you should try: Nightwish, Evanescence, and Within Temptation.
Overall, this CD is not all bad. It's convinced me to give their earlier album a try and I'll look forward to their future projects and maybe you will, too.

5 out of 5 stars Another great Gothic/Death metal band........2005-04-17

Sirenia continues to reing on my top ten favourites list. This band is perfect, everything from the guitars, to the epic choir chants. The whole cd is good, buy my favourite songs on this album are: "Lithium And A Lover", "Voices Within", "A Mental Symphony", and "Save Me From Myself". This band's sound is another example of a great combination between Gothic and Death Metal. I personally like Metal bands that use choirs, so naturally Sirenia instantly became one of my favourites. This is a great buy for anyone who is into bands such as "Tristania" "Penumbra", "Nightwish", "Within Temptation", "Ashes You Leave", etc...

5 out of 5 stars Pamela Williams - Smooth Jazz Personified.......2006-09-19

Living in the midwest (Oklahoma), you have to do a bit of work to find out what's new and exciting in the smooth jazz genre. I rely on our digital cable provider's music channel and input from friends who live in large metropolitan areas in other parts of the country. I had heard of Pamela Williams but hadn't actually heard any of her music. While shopping on-line, her music kept popping up on "what other customers bought" who made the same muscial purchases that I had.

I decided to get her most recent CD, "Elixir", after reading a review by a customer here on Amazon.com. It sounded like this was a CD I had to have and the reviewer was right. I love this CD! It's got a great blend of up-tempo tracks along with some slow-grooves to cuddle to or just relax by. I found every track to be a "keeper". I am a new fan and will remain a loyal one. Can't wait for the next release from "The Saxtress".

5 out of 5 stars Smoothjazz.com Review.......2006-04-05

I always look forward to the latest project from the Saxtress, and I'm never disappointed. Pamela Williams' new album ELIXIR, her sixth release since 1996's debut "Saxtress" is no exception to her great run! A lot of fans are calling it her best album ever. It contains everything you and I have come to love about this genre of music we call Smooth Jazz. It's got sensuality and grooves, supreme musicianship (growing up in Philly, her biggest influence was Grover) and production values, and hit after hit inside of this jewel case. The first radio single, "Positive Vibe" is propelling the disc up the charts, and there's much more where that came from, namely "Forbidden Fruit," "In the Cut," "Rejuvination," and "Rise," to which I give the award for the sexiest vibe on the CD. She's got the ballads in this potion too..."Say Yes" and "Give Me What You Got" are irresistible standouts. ELIXIR really is the dictionary definition of "Smooth" in all its ramifications, and you will definitely want to be on the lookout for Pamela's sizzling new full-length DVD, A NIGHT WITH THE SAXTRESS recorded live at Toronto's Harbourfront Centre using five cameras. So to summarize...Pamela Williams - ELIXIR...home run, touchdown, bingo, jackpot...a total winner. Combo it with "A Night with the Saxtress" DVD and you've just created Smooth Jazz nirvana! ~SCOTT O'BRIEN

Try not to drag out the Syd and Lennon comparisons one more time, OK? By now everyone knows that Robyn has a psychedelic heart. But after umpteen albums, can't we admit that this style is his, not anyone else's? The pure mix of pop, folk, the images that seem to come merrily loping out of left field--that's him. And on Moss Elixir, he's refined the sound, being very spare with his arrangements--a little guitar here, a few strings there-which only serve to point out how strong his material is (as well it should be, given that he's been performing a lot of this live for a while). He's also a guitarist of great talent and restraint; there's plenty he can do, but he prefers to lay back and let the song speak for itself. Take his lyrical images as you want--is "The Devil's Radio" about rock & roll or the rise of those conservative talk radio shows?--the ambiguity can be delightful, and a clear sign of just how far he's come. Look, he's been doing this for the better part of 20 years now. Can't we just admit that he's grown out of everyone's shadow to become a (slightly eccentric) genius in his own right? --Chris Nickson

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Great One from the Great One.......2002-06-21

This is a much more personal album than his A&M records. Gems like "I am not me" and "you and oblivion" only come around once in a lifetime. For those who have heard these songs on "Storefront Hitchcock", this album has a different take, with more fleshing out of the background. I find it thoroughly enjoyable as a "quiet time" record with brains.

I recently saw Robyn when he came through Chicago this Spring. He is at the top of his form, and no one should miss him if they have a chance to see him.

4 out of 5 stars It would be 5 stars, but..........2001-03-02

...it's just not suited for everyday listening. I love this record, don't get me wrong. I don't have such a difficult time interpreting his psychedelia like so many others do, so this record really struck me as very heartfelt, honest and very emotional. The lesson I learned with Moss Elixir is that losing someone you love is devastatingly painful, but for better or for worse, you do get over it. However, you just can't listen to an album all about death and mourning all the time...it gets to you! Be sure to occasionally switch to a happier record like Fegmania!

5 out of 5 stars Great album.......2000-12-11

Although I love Hitchcock the eccentric, he's not as much in evidence on this album. Nevertheless this, I think, is one of his very best - it never fails to touch me. Its a dreamy but mature meditation on memories and loss, with the feel of a song cycle, perfect for a fall or winter day. Robyn introduces violin on some songs to great effect, and his guitar playing and voice have never been any better. His songwriting remains on par with his best stuff, too - check out: "This is How it Feels" "She was Sinister" "You and Oblivion." And "Heliotrope," sounding like a Childe folk tune, with this great line: "I lie beneath the grass/My eyes are unseeing/My name is gone from all their files...." Sad, beautiful and highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Listen to the Devil's Radio(and this Album)....its Good!.......2000-04-17

This would have been a return to form if he hadn't always stayed good. Though it is a slight return to the confessional folk feelings of eye, its also really a melding of the lessons of pop he learned with the egyptians. Most of the songs are more fleshed out, such as Deni Bonet's violin, but not to the point of clutter. The production matches the quiet yet glittering music. All in all one of Mr.Hitchcock's best and fullest albums. That sounds slightly poppy without all the extras. Good Stuff!

3 out of 5 stars Way way overproduced, as usual.......1999-11-09

I wish he'd resist the temptation. He produces away all the great stuff we hear in his concerts. (I really only like his live albums because of this).

I was assitant director for this opera a couple months ago. I immediatly fell in love with the music. You will get these songs stuck in your head. Plus, it sends a wonderful message to its listeners.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this. I'm usually not a fan of translated opera, but this is such a witty and lively translation, and so perfectly suited to the spirit of the piece. Every English-speaking fan of Donizetti should have a copy of this recording.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Electronic version of Classical Music.......2005-06-20

This is like listening to classical music - but music created with modern electronic technology. Each piece is a "jewel" in itself. And the over-all "vibe" of the album is consistently positive. There is a level of "care in every little detail" here that is quite rare in modern music. This is definitely not "background music". It's the opposite: It is music that is profoundly interesting to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful visualisations / merveilleuse visualisations.......2000-03-13

Seeking for a true happiness, I long ago involved in various techniques and visions to enhance my consciousness level and to propose a better world for all. Beauty in architecture, landscapes, clothing, are indispensable for a beautiful life, but also music of various kind, appropriate for various purposes. Iasos «Elixir» focused mainly on a sometimes strange and always beautiful vibration of angelic realms, achieved with harmonious and gentle synthesiser sounds, sometimes more powerful. It is very suitable for meditation, especially visualisation of pure and high vibes, poetical landscapes, other worlds. I found somewhere that Iasos was the Mozart of the New Age. Sure he is among the bests. Anyway I enjoyed very much Iasos music since a long time, and hearing it again carry for me numerous rememberings of marvellous visualisations!

Please visit my site «For Happiness of all beings», with a novel which can be read using Iasos music as a background (samples). Be quiet, make silence, let the music lead your imagination, and enjoy!

Richard Trigaux

      Album Description

Elixir, from London's famed East End are, to borrow a well-used phrase, none more metal! The band's third album, originally released in 2003 and reissued here in expanded form, sees the classic `Son Of Odin' line-up back in full effect with a set of songs originally meant for release back in the '80s and kicking up a storm. Contains new sleeve notes and rare photos. Subtle? No, not really. Original? Again, not really relevant. Powerful, exciting and unrelenting? Yep, that's the one. If you like your metal hard and British. well, you know how that ends, right?

4 out of 5 stars Low Flying Owls - 'Elixir Vitae' (Stinky).......2007-05-27

I have to give this CD a four-star rating for effort alone. I mean, this release really caught me off guard. Nothing to unusual, 'Elixir Vitae' just rocks. Pure and simple. Tracks here that I found myself thoroughly enjoying were the T.Rex sounding "Swinging Sam", the Stooges-like "What My Friends Say", "Beaches Of Tomorrow" and "Last Day On The Planet". Line-up: Jared Southard-vocals, Sam Coe-bass, original Alice Cooper Group member Michael Bruce-guitar and Andy Wagner-keyboards. A very decent garage rock band coming straight to you from Sacramento. Do check it out.

5 out of 5 stars better than the sum of their influences.......2005-04-11

I heard a song off this CD on KXLU in L.A. and called in to find out who the hell it was. Am I glad I did! The first song I heard sounded like Jane's Addiction meets Iggy and the Stooges, but with something else fresher and more charismatic than just a regurgitation of someone's favorite bands. Sure, their influences make appearances in these songs, but each song adds to the unique sound these guys are creating. I can't stop listening to them. I just sent it to someone else as a gift. I hope she likes it as much as I do.

5 out of 5 stars this band is better live.......2004-04-21

Low Flying Owls have been around for a few years. They are from Sacramento and have made some noise in the bay area. They have self-released a few CDs. Now they are about to get large. They are already getting known. They are much like the recent spate of cool guitar bands like BRMC and The Warlocks, and in a way they are doing their own thing. It's been an exciting year for Stinky Records. They have been able to bring the new rock to the people. What may be new and different about Low Flying Owls are their use of electronic sounds and their use of gritty urban imagery. Jared Southard is much like a William T. Vollmann hanging around the Tenderloin and writing about the street. These songs are like short stories about real life. They are a band that could make something happen in the next year. I have been hearing about the new rock revolution. Here it is, finally.

2 out of 5 stars not what one would hope for.......2004-04-07

I heard the song Georgie Shot Johnnie (track 8) and fell in love. It is absolutely awesome. I rushed out and bought this album and I must tell you, it is NOT worthy. Insipid, generic, boring, lame. These are the words that these songs make me think of. It's hard to believe the same band that wrote track 8 wrote the rest of these songs. Listening to the rest of the songs started making me like track 8 less. Don't buy unless you like bad generock music.

I gave it two stars because on amazon 1 star is the lowest I could give it, and Georgie Shot Johnnie makes it 1 star better than the worst you can give.

5 out of 5 stars From start to finish.......2003-09-18

This album is just so fresh and consistently good. My picks are (track 2) and (track 3). It's a good mix of dreamy interesting sounds, and [kickin']riffs.
