If you're wondering how Green Day managed to become the biggest punk band in the world, take a look at Bullet in a Bible. Recorded at their June 2005 two-night run at Milton Keynes National Bowl in England, this combined CD/DVD sees these former bong-hitting Californian dropouts embracing political activism, pantomime hilarity, and all the fripperies of a rock opera--and excelling at all three.

The first half is essentially a run-through of the group's 2004 album American Idiot, complete with anti-American rabble-rousing and a set of barbed insults tossed back at the "rednecks" across the pond. That out of the way, the band careen into a sort of greatest-hits set, with the likes of "Longview" and "Hitchin' a Ride" sharing space with a brass-laden "King for a Day" that sees Billie Joe Armstrong prancing around the stage in crown and ermine cape, singing snatches of Lulu's "Shout" and Eric Idle's "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life." Tremendously silly, but Green Day have managed to figure out how to play it like showmen without resorting to juvenile puerility or morphing into corporate yes-men, and that's a way harder trick than it looks. --Louis Pattison

Electrifying.......2007-07-02

On the 'Bullet in a Bible' DVD, Billie Joe Armstrong says that some bands worry about how they would create intimacy in front of a crowd of 65,000, but said that for Green Day it was irrelevant as they weren't trying to create intimacy, they were trying to create an event. Ultimately that's what 'Bullet in a Bible' is, an event, a fantastic spectacle.

The band open with a spine tingling version of their newer hits with 'American Idiot' and 'Holiday' leading the line. They also show how well 'Jesus of Suburbia' works when performed live. After these songs, Green Day bring their newer, more uninitiated fans through some of the earlier Green Day catalogue, with quality performances of, among other songs, 'Longview', 'Basket Case' and 'Minority'. These performances should give an electrified jolt to all Green Day fans, new and old.

During the encore, Billy Joe brings the only moment of the before eschewed intimacy to the concert, with his closing rendition of 'Good Riddance'. This brings a beautiful close to another fantastic show by the boys from California.

I love lots of different rock music, but I had never been sold on Green Day. Something about their music, and especially the production of their sound on their studio albums, did not appeal to me. This DVD/Cd combo changed my mind and got me listening to some songs over and over again. It has a frenetic energy that I didn't find in their studio work. I don't much like the unnecessary cussing, but I can overlook it when the songs are this good. I find it amusing to see a punk band use so many pretty vocal harmonies. Songs I couldn't bear to listen to on the albums suddenly were quite good here in concert, such as 'Basket Case' and 'Brain Stew'. Most of the stuff from 'American Idiot' is great here also.

Energizing performance, great rock/punk music.......2007-03-14

For someone who grew up with rock music, was a child in the 60s, a teen and young adult in the 70s, and witnessed the early stages of punk, also in the 70s, this album/DVD came as something of a revelation. Although I've been more or less out of the loop in terms of both rock and punk for some years, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this disc--a "greatest hits" compilation leaning heavily on the "American Idiot" album--and watching the concert DVD. The songs belong to my daughter's generation, but geriatric as I am, I think the music is excellent, and the lyrics pretty intelligent, sometimes even searing. The DVD is fun to watch, too; the frenetic editing and choppy visuals don't really bother me.

I gather that some of the concert was cut from both disc and and film, but what is presented is very fine. The band, with two back up musicians, launch themselves into the American Idiot rock opera with a vengeance (complete with political commentary), and some older, vintage Green Day songs, like "Basket Case," and the mega-hit "Good Riddance," to the immense enthusiasm of the huge Brit crowd at the Milton Keynes National Bowl. Selections highlight the versatility of the group, which can belt out punk lyrics of anger and alienation, hard-hitting rock numbers, or melancholy ballads like "Wake Me Up When September Ends," without missing a beat. All three musicians seem powered up and at the top of their game, and Billie Joe Armstrong, an energizer bunny if there ever was one, keeps the energy level high from start to finish with his remarkable voice (a flexible tenor with an occasional, pleasing quaver) and onstage antics.

To add to all of this, the members of Green Day--baby faced, green eyed Billie Joe, the lean, intense Mike Dirnt, affable Tre Cool with his inimitable clowning--have an undeniable visual appeal than comes across well in the concert DVD, as it has in their videos (viewable on the Green Day website).

the world over. people critisize them because they are jealous.
They are better and more talented them "Mee-tall-ica" and
rap "hustlers" "iz u with ma" (makes no sense) and they're angry
cuz they're going strong 18 years now and they are capable of real music.

Performers not up to Cole Porter standards........2007-01-07

Being 78 and having lived through the heyday of stage musicals, I suppose I have a certain bias. However, this does NOT justify The DESTRUCTIVE "modern treatment" given by these performers, many of whom do not appeal to me at all. If they want to ruin some music, have them ruin some of the "modern stuff", SOME of which I consider trash. I am very sorry I listened to it, and even more sorry that I purchased it.

I challenge anyone to listen to Louis Armstrong's take on "Let's Do It (Let's Fall In Love)" from this collection and not fall in love with the singer, the song, the musicians, Cole Porter, and anyone who happens to be in the room with you at the time.

That song alone is worth whatever they're charging for this CD.

The absolute best CD ever........2006-05-13

6th grade, what a weird stage in my life. My older brother would always burn me CD's that I never liked but he was my older brother so I always said i liked it. I always liked Saves the Day a little, but I didn't really listen to music. Not until this year, when i met this kid. He had an older sister a year older than my brother. When I first met him, we were talking about music and what he liked. So i said, you probably don't know them, but i like Saves the Day a lot. He tackled me. We talked about why there so good and it wasn't until this year I lived off of Saves the Day. I went to my first STD concert and the trocadero, 3/30 this year. What a night... since that day i havnt not listened to them, and it just shows you why Through being Cool is the greatest CD of all time. If you really listen, and you understand what he's saying, you understand why it's so good. Just every song flows. There are a couple amazing songs though. You Vandal and Shoulder to the Wheel are the best. Just the way You Vandal ends and how Shoulder to the Wheel starts just makes you think it's one amazing song. Throughout the CD, there are no mistakes. Every song, 5 stars. It's like a book, and a different twist for every song. Stay What You Are is a very good CD, so is Can't Slow Down, Ups and Downs and Sound the Alarm. But nothing will every be as meaningful and amazing as Through Being Cool.

If you are into the whole emo scene not only should you own every saves the day album but in particular this one. this album is fast, upbeat, and catchy this is an album that everyone sould own several copies of.

I love this CD. Some say it's a period CD, but I disagree it really grows with you. It's catchy, but still a little twisted. Shoulder to the Wheel is one of the best songs ever made.

I bought this album when I was a senior in high school and was going through a complete 360 with my life. I was sick of the stupid clics at school and started hanging out with the punk kids and this album was the perfect soundtrack. I liked it back then because it was fun and new. But now I listen to it as a junior in college and much more mature and I realize it is an amazing album. Their musicianship is amazing. The songs are really well written and you cannot help but listen to this album and feel wonderful.
I recommend buying this album because it's different from all the other Saves the Day albums and it's better too!

More well crafted than it seems.......2005-08-09

My experience with the cd is actually the exact opposite of the guy whose review is below mine. I got the CD senior year of high school, and now I am a senior in college. When I first got the CD, I liked a lot of songs on it, and didn't like some. I thought it was an ok album, but nothing amazing. 4 years later, I now think it is one of the most well crafted albums I've ever heard. The thing is, you have to listen to the whole thing striaght through without interruption in order to understand why. Every song fills an exact purpose and makes the songs around it sound better. There are some songs that are great on their own, my personal favorites being You Vandal, The Last Lie I Ever Told, and Banned From The Back Porch, but they sound even better in the context of everything else. A lot of these songs I would never listen to on their own because, without their context, they aren't that good of songs. Altogether, however, every song sounds perfect.

June Christy's bid to shake some of the frost off her image resulted in these two late-'50s albums. Although the ostensible theme of Gone for the Day is a visit to the outdoors with a lover, the occasional jarring note drops--witness the knowing orchestral dissonance on "It's So Peaceful in the Country" and the nod to Christy's bittersweet signature song, "Something Cool," on "When the World Was Young." Only a glib, brassy "Give Me the Simple Life" seems out of place. Fair and Warmer starts on a similar note with "I Want to Be Happy" but soon settles down. Christy's melody-bending performance renders the Jimmy Van Heusen/Johnny Burke "Imagination"'s suggestions of sex as melancholy as Gone's high points, while she takes charge of the situation on Irving Berlin's "Best Thing for You." This disc finds Christy striking close to greatness on a pair of complementary records from an era when the LP was finding its way as a conceptual tool. --Rickey Wright

two great albums by an underappreciated singer.......2005-12-02

I think that June Christy must have been among the most thoughtful of jazz singers. Along with Sinatra, she was one of the first to grasp the idea of the concept album, a series of thematically related songs that set a mood. "Gone For the Day" is such an album, a set of relaxed tunes about life in the country. She was also fearless in her song choices; on both of these two albums, her knack for finding obscure but excellent songs is demonstrated by the fact that the songs you've heard before are probably outnumbered by the songs you haven't.

"Gone for the Day" is a particular favorite of mine. I really like Pete Rugolo's arrangements. He uses a string section, a full complement of trombones, a flute and a french horn, but no trumpets or saxes, contributing to the quiet mood. June Christy never sang better than on this album. She had a real gift for projecting emotion and melancholy using a restrained and understated style. Perhaps it was her midwestern background that kept everything bubbling just under the surface where you can sense it but not see it. Whatever. It's refreshing, and it's the opposite approach from what most singers use today; unmusical pyrotechnics disguising a hollow core.

Especially good is "When the Sun Comes Out," which is my favorite version of the song I've ever heard. "Gone for the Day" probably wasn't very commercial when it came out in 1957, and it's even less so today, but it is a great listen.

Soft, cool, romantic jazz.......2002-07-31

The late, great, June Christy was the ultimate stylist. June had her limitations, but worked within them to great effect. She was at her best on the soft, romantic numbers, but she was well capable of picking up the tempo when required. June always allowed her musicians their share of the glory - there are nice instrumental breaks here and there, but ultimately it is June's voice that is important.

These albums do not represent June's artistic peak (The Misty Miss Christy and Something Cool are generally regarded as her two best, though opinions are divided between them) but the two albums which make up this CD are of an extremely high quality. Most singers never come close to recording albums of this quality, never mind those other two.

What you have here (as the two titles suggest) are two albums which are inspired by, and ideal as a background for, those warm summer nights - but you can play them at other times of the year when you want to dream about summer.

If you are already familiar with June's music, this twofer will make a wonderful addition to your collection. If not, this is a great place to start - but whether you start here, or with another of June's albums, you may end up buying several of June's albums, just as I did, and you'll wonder why it took you so long to buy that first one.

JUNE IN AUGUST.......2001-08-05

With her limited vocal range,JUNE has made wonders.She was perhaps the worst judge of her own talent.These two albums of 1957 are wonderful to say the least.JUNE has what other singers sometimes lack:a heart and that is the main reason she remains rather unique among the jazz singers of her generation.Notice how she along with her musical director is able to pick the right songs for her.JUNE is a terrific ballad singer ,deeply moving in a most unusual way.Once she takes a particuliar song,she manages most of the time to display a kind of melancolic charm that stays with you a long time.Those songs almost bring us a sort of portrait of the woman.One is inclined to think that the few up tempo numbers in this selection of songs were asked by CAPITOL to help the sells.God bless JUNE CHRISTY!

This is a great CD. I've never heard of Eclipse before - I found them my searching Amazon for Acappella. I randomly chose this CD and purchased it.

I gave it 4 stars because, although I love it, it's not as good as some of the other contemporary acappella out there (ie. Rockapella, GrooveBarbers, DaVinci's Notebook), but they are very close. If you have worn out all of your Rockapella CDs and are looking for a change, go ahead and grab this CD - you won't be disappointed.

Very Tight!.......2003-04-28

These guy are a very tight group! Their voices blend into an amazingly good sound! I have grown up with and sung Acappella for all my life.. and these guys are great.. My only draw back is some of the perc because I personaly (as a VP myself) do not like the breathy sounds.. its just not my style.. but that only happens alittle! over all very good arangements! very good uses of pan and other effects! I think i could honestly listen to "Heaven's eyes" and "Hard times come again no more" all day long! Some of the most soothing vocals i have heard in a long time! If you like Acappella music.. you will like this album!

This is the type of album that you listen to and love many times over and then hearing it on a high-quality system (one that does the voices and arrangements justice) are blown away by the realization: "This is even better than I thought." Better than their first album ("Once"), which is one of my all-time favorites

I read the first review and have NO idea what that person expected from this CD. But Cloud By Day is one of the most powerful prophetic cds out and I'd recommend it to anyone interested in prophetic music...especially edgy, "out of the box" music. And besides, the quality of its instrumentation and vocals is super as well.

With all due respect to the artists and worshippers involved in what I am sure was a great investment, this cd was a considerable disappointment. The words "prophetic worship" carry significant weight and should be used with great care.
I encourage that this cd be sampled before purchasing and hope that others disagree.

Volume 2 of the complete COLE PORTER songbooks on VERVE is a clinger all the way.Songs like EVERYTHING I LOVE,GIVE HIM THE OOH-LA-LA and MOST GENTLEMEN DON'T LIKE LOVE are not often recorded.ANITA gives us a typical treatment of MY HEART BELONGS TO DADDY which means her way;The ELLA renditions are not from the songbooks of 1956;i personnaly enjoy AFTER YOU,WHO from the magical voice of HELEN MERRILL and SO IN LOVE done in cha-cha by that maneater par excellence DINAH WASHINGTON.This is an excellent tibute to COLE PORTER,well worth buying.

Terrific versions of classic Porter songs recorded by jazz's greatest vocalists... It's hard to go wrong with this CD. This is the second volume of the Cole Porter's songbook and it is appreciably better than the first volume, which was titled "Night & Day"

This cd is new... It's different. Wayne Horvitz expresses a beautiful melancholy I've found nowhere else. Listen to the first few measures of the firt song... And the little parade... it expresse something... something like... nostalgic childishness. Oh, it's good.

Sweeter indeed!.......2002-07-25

This is the followup CD to "Forever" (formerly "American Bandstand") from Wayne Horvitz and Zony Mash acoustic. It's another collection of pianistic tone poems, introverted, but no less than ravishingly beautiful. It's hard to call this jazz exactly - I think of it more as songs Debussy or Ravel might have written had they lived today and had some jazz influence. This is definitely on my top 10 list for the year. Try it - you won't be dissapointed!

This compilation of modern-day madrigals, the latest in a fascinating series of discs from the San Francisco-based all-male vocal group Chanticleer, won the Grammy for Best Small Ensemble Performance of 1999. The selections range over a variety of styles and aesthetics, from the haunting, hypnotic sounds of Steven Stucky's Cradle Songs to the archaic, ethereal beauty and Eastern inflections of John Tavener's "Village Wedding." There are the soft (and somewhat affected) asperities of Bernard Rands' Canti d'Amor as well as the gentle, almost English pastoralism of Zhou Long's "Words of the Sun" (beautiful!) and the colorfully exotic Orientalism of Chen Yi's Tang Poems. Other examples of the wide range here are the self-conscious busywork of Augusta Read Thomas's Love Songs to the darkly lush, 12-part weave of Steven Sametz's "In Time Of," with its radiant climax and pulsating chordal sonorites like the tolling of bells. All of this Chanticleer sings with striking freshness and commitment, virtuosic to a fare-thee-well, always sensitive to the emotional cues of the texts. The recording, made at Skywalker Ranch in January of 1999, is vivid and warm, and so is much of the music. Truly a winning disc. --Ted Libbey

Transcendent Vocalism.......2005-01-31

This compilation is essential listening, especially (but not exclusively) for those already introduced to the marvels of Chanticleer. It features a wide variety of contemporary madrigals all dedicated to the theme of love. Gorgeous polyphony, entrancing dissonance; the music is very difficult, but Chanticleer's vocalism is exemplary, as always. The whole feel of the album takes some getting used to for the uninitiated. After a few listenings, though, one can fully perceive its unique and sublime beauty.

Highlights abound. The first three tracks, all lullabies by Steven Stucky, are brilliantly executed, but it is track four, Village Wedding by John Taverner, that first knocked my socks off. It seems to represent the absolutely ideal match between composer and performer, between written and sung text. It consists of a wonderful poem by Greek poet Angelos Sikelianos, with a recurring excerpt from the Eastern Orthodox wedding ceremony interspersed throughout. Taverner is himself a member of the Eastern Orthodox church, and the song is as much a spiritual experience as a musical one.

Another fantastic piece is Words of the Sun, by Chinese composer Zhou Long. It is probably the most accessible song on the CD, with numerous lovely subtleties and nuances that can be fully appreciated after multiple exposures.

Lastly, I'd like to express my sincere conviction that In Time Of (by Steven Sametz, set to a poem by E.E. Cummings) is the single most gorgeous piece of music I have ever had the great fortune to hear. The sonority is perfectly balanced, each arching phrase better than the one before. Please, for the sake of pure unadulterated beauty, purchase this CD. You will not regret it.

Beautifully delivered as always, but not my material........2002-07-30

I came to this album as a fan of Chanticleer more than of contemporary art music, though I like to think I do have a certain ear for the stuff. I haven't been educated in it, but I've sung some in my time in choruses, and I learned to appreciate those pieces the way that I learned to appreciate the more classical stuff as a child--by feeling it and hearing it come out of my own body, the ways that it worked, what was exciting, ect. That said, there is a point where I don't get it, and I reached that point all over this album. I thought I'd pass it on because it is hard for most of us to pick this kind of music off the shelf--there will be pieces that skewer us and some that make us fidget. For my part, I am grateful to have the album for the sake of three (long) songs. The Tavner Wedding song itself is probably worth it. But the album will never be put on leisurely.

Lives up to their reputation.......2001-03-07

Just recently had the opportunity to hear Chanticleer in concert...this CD certainly gives a cross section of their range...especially liked the "Tang Poems" and "Words of the Sun", which they performed live...very esoteric mix of musical styles...well worth the purchase for Chanticleer lovers!

One of the best I've picked up in ages.......2000-11-25

First of all let me state that the 4 stars isn't for the performance...which is truly outstanding...it is for a few pieces that are a tad sub-par. I also want to mention that its not that the pieces are modern either, I happen to be extremely sympathetic to modern music.

I usually don't like to do reviews this way, but I'm going to make a few comments piece by piece:

1) CRADLE SONGS - The first two of this trio of lullabies are great...the ones from Brazil & Poland are hauntingly beautiful...I'm not so crazy about the one from Tobago. A fairly strong piece, its certainly interesting.

2) VILLAGE WEDDING - This is one of the best three pieces on the album, and probably the best. Hearing John Tavener's work next to his contemporaries is an easy indicator of why he is considered one of this century's greatest and certainly one of the greatest living composers. Simultaneously it is joyous, austere, reverent & spiritual. Simply beautiful & amazing.

3) CANTI D'AMOUR - This is an up & down work. I'm not sure what the composer had in mind, but I find the first part to be amusing. It reminds me of barbershop quartet. It has more somber moments too that are quite moving. Overall though, its okay.

4) WORDS OF THE SUN - After the Tavener piece, this is my favorite one. I would like to hear some of Zhou Long's other works. It is a very subtle piece. Very Chinese too, yet simultaneously western. This is one of my favorite pieces by eastern composers of western music. Lyrically, it is amazing. Its borrowed from a 20th century Chinese poem that is gorgeous in English, I'm sure its even more so in Chinese. Musically, it is very stirring.

5) TANG POEMS - This piece too is written by a Chinese composer (Chen Yi) and it is distinctly Chinese. I am intrigued at some of the techniques used by the composer. I am really pleased with the piece, although I'm sure some find it a little "too eastern." It is extremely pretty if one is accustomed to eastern melodies. The 2nd part is a bit sharper and probably less accessible than the first part.

6) THE RUB OF LOVE - One of the duller pieces on the album.

7) IN TIME OF - Sublime. The opening few bars are unearthly. Definately one of the three best pieces. They definately need to keep this one in their concert repetoire (along with the Tavener and the two pieces by Chinese composers.) This is one of those works you have to hear to believe.

8) LOVE SONGS - This is a quirky collection of tunes by Augusta Read Thomas. It runs the gamut of serious to extremely silly. There are some strong points here, but some of it is too silly to stand the test of time ("Alas, The Love of Women"). Eventhough it is extremely unconventional, the part entitled "For Stony Limits Cannot Hold Love Out" is powerful. It is piercing & strange, but it really works with the text.

There are times when I love everything on this CD, and times when some of it gets on my nerves. It is, however, never boring and the performances are superb. I highly congratulate Chanticleer for not sitting on their laurels. This is adventursome stuff and it works 90% of the time, which is more than I can say for 99% of the ensembles out there.

I highly recommend this disc for "Village Wedding," "Words of the Sun," "In Time of," and "Tang Poems."

Pick it up, be adventuresome. Enjoy.

Fantastic recording of contemporary choral works.......2000-09-21

Chanticleer is one of the USA's finest choral ensembles, and they have picked a marvelous and diverse program for this recording -- with something that would appeal to absolutely everybody. The inclusion of two "husband-wife" pairs in the choice of music also makes for a special connection to the theme of the disc. Of special note to this reviewer are the "delicious" sonorities of Bernard Rands's "Canti d'Amor" and Augusta Read Thomas's "Love Songs" -- Chanticleer is a group who is able to pull off this difficult music beautifully. This recording was absolutely deserving of the Grammy that is received -- one of the finest discs of modern choral music in the past few years.
