Adam Plack (Nomad), together with Aboriginal songmen Bobby Bunnungurr, David Gulpilil, and Jimmy Jidamin, created Songman in the Aborignal territory known as Ramingining. A cohesive blend of ancient traditionals, landscape-influenced sound, and contemporary groove, Songman is a strange and enchanting mix of chant, phat funky club beats, didjeridoo, horns, and Hank Marr-styled jazziness, along with Nomad's Phil Collins-eque vocals. This heady song cycle incorporates vibes, whirring organ, drum loops, and electric guitar as well, resulting in a very ambitious rave up. Overwhelming in some instances, Songman is intoxicating, lively, and endlessly unfolding. Of particular beauty is the traditional chant: potent, raw, and intriguing when mixed in with dense grooves. An appealing if not altogether even recording. --Paige La Grone

4 out of 5 stars Excellent new (1999) recordings of career favorites.......2002-04-22

The reviewer who ripped this CD is wrong on virtualy every count. First, the point of the recording was a CD of Jerry Jeff's favorite songs from his career to accompany the release of his autobiography. The songs chosen were all done live in the studio, and the playing and recording quality is excellent --clean and crisp, with the cohesiveness found on live (studio) recordings of a band that had been together for as long as these guys had.

Of particular appeal is what, to me, is the definitive version of Mr. Bojangles -- done in a bouncy, jazzy, scatty arrangement that is perfect for the story told in the song, that of a tap dancing cell mate encountered in a New Orleans drunk tank.

Top-notch versions of other career highlights, mostly from the more acoustic side of Jerry Jeff, include: Morning Song To Sally; Woman In Texas; She Knows Her Daddy Sings; and Little Man. This is a 60 year old man who has lived a fast and hard life (and survived it!) who is now clean, sober, and seemingly happy. Contrary to the accusation of the other reviewer that he's ripping off his fans by cramming the same songs down their throats again, what he's really doing is celebrating -- in and with song -- that survival, and recalling and paying tribute to the people and places his life has brought to him.

Songwise, it ranges from very good to excellent; performance-wise, it's terrific -- very down-home and comfortable; recording quality-wise, it's as good a sounding album as you could ask for -- clean and crisp (especially appealing due to the fact that it is dominanted by acoustic guitars).

1 out of 5 stars RIP OFF.......2001-06-07

This CD should never have been released. The only thing of interest on it is Django's song "The Road You Choose" the rest is mostly recycled songs from earlier CD's that are much worse than previously released versions. Whats the matter Ronald??? you dont have enough money already that you have to rip off your loyal fans with this junk?

5 out of 5 stars A life worth living.......2000-01-27

I've been listening to Jerry Jeff Walker for almost 10 years. It's a small amount of time compared to how long he's been playing. I enjoyed this book thoroughly. Many (in these reviews) say that this isn't a great piece of literature, but I couldn't help but recall, almost through every chapter - THE FOOLS PROGRESS by EDWARD ABBEY. If you read this book or the other, you may vicariously feel what it is truly like to live that american reality that so many have no words, thoughts or even expressions to explain. It's not a vision from Oliver Stone or MTV or on the evening news with Dan Rather, it's the man in this book, Jerry Jeff. !Viva Terlingua!

5 out of 5 stars Tried and True Music.......1999-12-30

I cut my teeth on Jerry Jeff's music, and loved the way his songs could get me all pumped up and ready to romp. Then, about 15 years ago, I went to see him at a little place named Fitzgerald's in Houston. I was all excited and fired up, and seeing a lone stool and microphone on stage, knew that we were in for a boring warm-up act.

A few minutes later, Jerry Jeff stepped up on the stage, sat on the stool, hooked his right heel on a rung of the stool, and asked "how y'all doin'?" I was mad because he didn't even have a band! Then he started playing and singing. It took two songs to come down and start listening. Then I just sat there mesmerized, still except for my breathing, for over three hours as I learned what music was really about. I learned that music was about communicating, educating, and sharing life's experiences.

This CD took me right back to that night. With so many "polished acts" out there today, Jerry Jeff uses this CD to remind each of us what life is about... living, learning, and sharing what we know with others.

If you want a "catchy chorus" with no meaning that sticks in your head and nothing else, move on. If you want music that is real, honest, and sincere enough to stir your appetite for life... this one is a "MUST HAVE"!

5 out of 5 stars Vintage JJW [without the alcohol (supply your own)].......1999-12-30

Having listened to Jerry Jeff through the years in various conditions, (both he and I,) I must say the new one sounds particularly good. Crisp, clean pickin', and the old magic is still in evidence. It'll all mean more to you if you read the book "The Gypsy Songman" first. Congrats, Scamp. Another one over the heart of the plate at 95+.

Then I found it on Internet.

thanks to Amazon they provided this opportunity.
I trust myself and my ears. It was what I was looking for.

2 out of 5 stars From spiritual to commercial.......2004-04-12

What a deception
Nomad first album (called Nomad)is a musical feast, a masterpiece that i have recommended to many friends. It brought together musics from 3 different cultural back ground namely australian, african, and american indian.
Now here we have a disco/dance/world/newage piece of crap.
Where has the spirit gone?? ....fishing!!

3 out of 5 stars missed the AUSSIE flavor.......2001-03-24

I guess I was a bit put off by the white-man-in-dreadlocks flavor here. I tasted pretension. Just a bit too much funk for me. The didgeridoo is a back up instrument played again by the white-guy-in-dreads. Nature sounds here and there...loons and owls and some bush birds. Are there loons in Australia? Occasional cuts with Mr. Nomad singing totally average pop stuff. Perfectly pleasant music at times, but nothing that grabbed me. But perhaps I was influenced by Didjworks - Collective Unconscious purchased at the same time. Now that was real world music!

3 out of 5 stars A Matter of Taste.......2000-04-05

This album is definitely an auditory feast, but one that requires a certain taste. I bought this after having heard and purchasing "Winds of Warning" and the self-titled "Nomad" and loving them both. I wish I had listened to "Songman" before purchasing it, though. While the album is well-produced and of very high quality, and the chanting adds an interesting element, the musical evolution away from traditional didj, drums and nature sounds rather put me off. Perhaps a bit too much "funk" and "groove." So, if you're in the market for more of the traditional style, you'll probably not like this as well as Plack's other works. Definitely give the sample tracks a listen.

5 out of 5 stars COMING FULL CIRCLE.......1999-12-04

review from Magical Blend magazine (US) "NOMAD (aka Adam Plack) lived, wrote and recorded this phenomenal work under the skies of the Ramingining community in Arnhem Land. It's all about sultry grooves, entrancing Tribal beats and snake-charming didgeridoo laced with exotic chants of Aboriginal Dreamtime. This is one of the most interesting pieces of musical artist I've ventured through recently. This story is enchanting...the music comes from the Ramingining and was composed by merging ancient beats with the sounds of the Australian landscape. It is full of modern pathos and ancient chant. Listening reminds me that life is a cycle and we come "full circle" in the end." MARA BENSON, MAGICAL BLEND

I looked at a couple of the other reviews for this "album", and want to rebut what others may be saying. Gypsy Songman is truly and album of JJW's life. Granted, the version of Mr. Bojangles is not folksy like the original, but ya gotta get past that! The other tracks are AWESOME, and if you listen to the words, you can learn about him. I recently read his book and now declare Gypsy Songman in my top three JJW favorites!

2 out of 5 stars bojangles is an imposter.......2001-10-23

This album cannot possibly be as godawful as the samples...supplied. Jerry Jeff never sang as badly as the Bojangles cut even when he was falling down drunk.
I'm going to keep browsing. Somewhere there must be a re-release of the old "Bojangles" LP, the one with Bromberg's picture on the back.

5 out of 5 stars songwriting as clear and straightforward as Texas rain.......1999-09-23

Jerry Jeff can reach right out and grab you with a simple tune that comes straight from the heart with naked honesty - She Knows Her Daddy Sings is worth the price of the album and more!

This cd is full of old classics like "Mr. Bojangles" and "David & Me" to newer great autobiographical tunes like "Layin My Life On the Line." Jerry Jeff always writes and sings from the heart and this collection is no different. Especially noticeable are the songs written for his children Jessie & Django, "She Knows Her Daddy Sings" and "Django's Lullaby." Keep on keepin' on JJW.

          Album Description

On this debut CD Don writes 10 originals plus 2 covers that are in the old folk blues style (30s to 60s), but with current themes. He is a master wordsmith, with melodic hooks that will stay with you for weeks on end. He complains that politicians have raised the taxes and therefore his rent, forcing him to move in "Movin to the Cheap Side." He describes a rough bar scene that really happened recently in Mississippi, with "Mr Songman." He completely makes over "Michigan Water Blues" into "Newport Harbor Blues," with new words and melody. His cover of Dylan's "Don't Think Twice" truly brings out the depth of this song. His acoustic guitar, steel slide, and rack harmonica playing are first rate. The final song "Warm Rain" could be a classic crossing over country, folk and pop genres.

I bought Joey's CD, "Living in the Restless Age" several months ago because of his fine reputation as a computer programmer, and because I had heard that he had open code on the CD ROM showing how he created it. I was really interesting in looking at his style and seeing his methods.

When I received the CD, I was very taken by the music and the videos themselves.

They show in a very realistic way the way childhood is in our culture. There is no idealizing of childish innocence, or pretence of generosity in the parents, but a very honest look at the true way parents and children relate, and how they have to protect themselves from each other.

There is also a sense of hope, that families, through the power of God, can be healed and can learn to care for each other.

The high quality of the recording and the simplicity and tunefulness of the music makes it very easy to listen to. I enjoy this CD very much, and play it whenever I can.

I think people of my generation, who grew up in the late sixties and seventies, will enjoy this CD ROM and find that it brings back a lot of memories.
