They say this CD was recorded between 2001 and 2004 "at home and on tour, in bedrooms, hotels, moving vehicles, parking garages...." But despite its name, this isn't an album of sketches, lost tracks, and other detritus. Instead, Artifact is a haunting document of ambient designs, trippy lounge, and cinematic atmospheres that occupy STS9's first new CD in five years. The "home" recordings are actually verité vignettes providing connecting tissue for songs like "Better Day," a haunting lament with breathy guest vocals from Audio Angel (Rashida Clendening), and the space-age lounge music of "Somesing." A band that plays as much as it programs, STS9's compositions have a natural flow and integrity, as if they were grown as much as computed. "Tokyo" is a hypnotic jam of slide guitar and electronic atmospheres lashed together on a kinetic groove sliced by dream sequence logic. Imagine the Grateful Dead going glitch on Miles Davis's Bitches Brew and you have a good sense of STS9's sound and why they've played events from the alternative festival Coachella to jam-band gatherings like Bonaroo. Artifact doesn't look back, but forward to a horizon still a few moments in the future. --John DilibertoCustomer Reviews:

Lush Livetronica.......2005-09-08
Rather than songs engineered by those with a technological approach, musicianship plays the key role on this warm and intellectual electronica. Supposedly, STS9 are wonderful on stage (I admit to never having seen them live) but this review is based on the album in question and not on the group's direction or capabilities beyond the studio. A truly refreshing and lyrical album, `Artifact' is worthy of investigation.

Product Description
"Artifact: Perspectives" is a collection of remixes by some of Sts9's favorite artists they've encountered along the way. "This could have been a box set if we went after everyone we wanted to connect with. We finally had to say 'enough is enough,' there will be other records." In mastering, the disc ended up being three minutes too long for production, resulting in a last minute cut, and a collection of exclusive remixes available only from 1320records.com. "The best thing about this project for us has been making some new friends and the prospects of more music and collaborations in the future." The new, full-length album "Artifact: Perspectives" features remixes of ARTiFACT studio tracks from Bill Laswell, Slicker, Ming+Fs, Elliot Lipp w/ Leo123, Mr. Lif, Richard Devine, Machine Drum, Karsh Kale, Collective Efforts, Genetic, Metrognome,Lowpro Lounge feat. ill 45, Bassnectar, Sub-ID, & Eustachian.Customer Reviews:

Science Funk Jam Monumental.......2003-04-04
SPLASH NINE.......2001-07-08
I wanted to write this review b/c of previous ones which criticized the band's "Mushy" lack of tightness and repetitive qualities. I almost did not buy this CD because of those reviews, but I am glad I did.
I believe that the "Mushy" quality comes from the taping, not from the band.
It is as if the instruments were recorded on the same input level, who knows if this was intentional. It is a good thing b/c I think David Murphy is a decent bassist. And it is not such a bad thing with headphones, because the guitar is on the left, keyboards on the right.
But the drummer's hi-hat is very loud, and opens more frequently on higher energy jams, masking the conglomerate sounds with a loose 'splash'. It is a little too much, almost as if he had just finished reading a book on 'Pensacola's Funk Technique for the Hi-Hat'.
I actually think it would work if the audio engineer had toned down the drums from an 9 to a 2, and the keyboards from an 9 to a 5, if that makes sense. I do not think I have ever heard such a loud and busy hi-hat as the one played by Zach Velmer on this CD.
So the previous reviews criticize this band for sounding "mushy". I think that criticizing the band because of a 'poor' recording is like not tipping your waitress b/c the chef burnt your steak...just not her fault.
I do agree with the previous posts regarding repetition. In this recording, Sector 9 had a tendency to overplay the rhythmic tunes they developed. I would not exactly call them melodies. Imagine 3 bars of a tonal phrase, and on the fourth bar add a button. Frequently on this CD, Sector 9 did this several times to each phrase before starting a new one.
In a way the organized structure sounds too restrained. It is as if the band members have become trapped inside their own creation.
But this is such a subjective call, because I think this is a 70's/80's Rock-Jam philosophy, and if you listen to this CD, then I think you will understand what I mean.
In my humble opinion, Sector 9 is a really solid group, and I would gladly see them on stage. I would buy this CD again, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes instrumental jams, and 70's/80's Rock.

Album Description
Realize intention, explore space... With the intention of playing music in harmony with nature, our most recent explorations have led us to new practices and experiences in music. We feel art is, in many cases, to foreshadow a higher universe reality, to crystallize the emotions of time into the thought of eternity. To ultimately just make us feel! These new practices, and the openness of our crowds, have led us in new directions in our improvisations. Half of the tracks we selected for this album reflect some of these unique moments of inspired exploration.Customer Reviews:

Sacred Sounds Unlock The Forgotten You.......2003-08-16
Exploration.......2002-09-28
This is chill-out music in the good sense. It's hard to describe this band in terms of its predecessors or peers because not many bands use both organic and electronic instruments to gain such effect. Clearly, they appreciate the jazz explorations of 70s as I hear the occasional guitar stylings that might belong on a Kenny Burrell or a Headhunters album. The drumming blends drum&bass technique with organic improvisation. Perhaps the best description I can offer for these tracks is that they develop into groovy ambient soundscapes.
I personally enjoy their more mellow excursions. Techo beats just get monotonous for me and these two discs do a fine job of transcending both the jam band and the techno genres by giving the listener an experience that is both artistically pleasing and interesting. Don't expect to shake your rump with this offering but you can let your mind wander free.

In Defense of OSSP..........2002-08-05
In contrast to some albums where there is so many musical influences and so much going on in a song that it ends up sounding jumbled and flooded, the songs on this record become complete only through the vastness of the individual instruments. And what's even better about this album is that many of the songs feature Kofi Burbridge on Flute...Amazing!!
Also, the music is great to trance out to. It is at times relaxing (as is the case with "Squares and Cubes") and at times its all that I can do to keep from dancing ("Kamuy" and "Mischief of a Sleepwalker").
Bear in mind that no record is going to be able to compare to a live show. So take it with a grain of salt. This album is cover-to-cover amazing. I would recommend it to anyone...be they fans of jazz, jam, trance, or just plain ole rock and roll. It's worth owning, there's just no arguing it.
oh, and p.s. sts9 is from Athens, GA.
STS9 addict adds his thoughts...........2002-03-30
Having said this, I think the album is so below par of what I have heard that I would actually recommend to not get this album. It is sad, really, but there is so much good live shows of these Boulder natives that life will soon get much better if you take the time to go to their website(sts9.com) and find a kind soul, of which there are many, to send you a free live show. It doesnt get much better than this folks.
Up to this point, sector 9 is my music life, everything I listen to I have to compare to this band, even knowing that nothing can come close to the plane that it is on. I feel connected listening to this music, any time, i can connect to myself, others, or life in general justby turning these folks on. do yourself a favor, give these boys a chance. It may be hard gettin used to like it was for me, but some good advice would be to take a walk with a set in hand and listen to the music. Just listen to it.
Just listen to it.

Album Description
STS9 is proud to announce the release of Live At Home, a collection of 23 unreleased tracks created over the past 3 years at home and on the road. From lush ambient textures and downtempo moods to eclectic, playful instrumentals, this album is a glimpse into the diversity of creation that embodies STS9. While some tracks are collaborations, most are the work of a "soul" or lone producer. Though distinctly STS9, listeners will find the band embarking on a new musical exploration. Live At Home is a collection of songs that have never been heard during live concerts or previous studio recordings.Customer Reviews:

A lot of these tracks are just the band playing around and making interesting sounding little jams. But many of the tracks definitely stand out and never cease to amaze me...every time I hear them. I would definitely reccommend this album to any STS9 fan, or any fan of any type of music. This is a must have.
