CD set is misnamed.......2007-06-08

They should have titled this "classical music for people who love classical music" because most of the selections are typical classical music. The title suggests it would be lively selections of "light classical" music that is more upbeat, i.e. Sabre Dance, etc. I really don't hate classical music at all and have many classical CDs in my collection but I really wanted to hear more exciting selections. I won't be purchasing any more of this set but if you like traditional classical music these are good one.

I do know it says classical music for people who hate it, but serioulsly you would have better luck never listening to classical music again. The recordings are awfull and do not do justice to any of the composers. Buy something else.

We love this set of CD's. I just got a new copy because my kids keeping taking our first copy with them so that they can listen at work or in their bedrooms but then I can never find them.

Seek better versions.......2006-12-09

If you are fairly new to classical purchases then compilation CD's can be useful for deciding what to buy next. Sometimes you only need a small taste of a piece to inspire you to buy a release with the whole performance on. The problem with this compilation however is that most of the versions are poor in performance or recording quality (or both) when compared to the best versions and the fact that the conductors aren't even credited on the track listing made me suspect that this would be the case. One of my favorite classical pieces is Tchaikovsky's 1812 festival overture but if the first CD version I had heard had been the finale excerpt that is on this compilation I may not have gone on to buy the whole thing. Luckily I heard Adrian Leaper's version first and Adrian's version is rather good.
My classical CD buying experience is limited to only a couple of dozen discs but I have found that the Naxos and Deutshe Grammophon releases are fairly safe. Avoid any release which does not name the conductors on the track listing or sleeve notes.

It Is What It Is.......2006-10-27

It's fitting that this page is fraught with the same kind of silly snobbery that turns people off from classical music (and necessitates collections like this) in the first place.

Any criticism of this compilation, which focuses on the quality of the performances or the fact that many tracks are excerpts, misses the point. This is not a collection for people who consider such things, nor does it purport to be. The idea is to package as many ultra-famous classical melodies as possible in one affordable collection and market it to people who have never purchased a classical recording. As such, top-tier performances are likely too expensive to be sold so cheaply and are unnecessary anyway. Those of us who already know and love a piece or two can forgive the compilers the inclusion of sub-par recordings, when we are exposed to so many other beautiful pieces for the first time.

It probably comes as a shock for some to hear that most people are not familiar with these classics. We may hear snippets on TV or movies, but are left with no idea as to the composer or historical context. With that in mind, it is extremely intimidating to begin buying classical. I suppose those among us, who so thoroughly dismissed the very notion of a boxed set like this, would have us begin by buying full albums by reputable interpreters. Surprisingly enough though, the majority of people would consider that a tad cost-prohibitive.

To conclude, this is a STARTER collection. It will either affirm a listener's feelings about classical music or lead to an interest in purchasing better recordings. Ideally, I suppose the interpretations would be better, but, for reasons mentioned above, that just isn't in the cards for a collection of this nature. If you're familiar with 50 different recordings of "The Ring" series, or have season tickets to the New York Philharmonic, then this probably isn't for you. For us cretins with limited foreknowledge of classical music though, it serves as a succinct introduction with little to complain about.

This is a must buy for Wishbone Ash fans. This is the bands first known recording before there first album came out back in 1970. The cd has a mix of mostly songs that were recorded officially on there first two albums, as well as some songs done that never made it to vinyl during that time. The recordings on the cd were pre-1st album recordings from the vaults that were never released until now. Track One: "Lady Whiskey" One of the classic Wishbone Ash songs that you never get tired of listoning. A very young Martin Turner on vocals on this track.Track Two: " Road of Day to Day" Previously unreleased song. An " Argus" type of song, that features some nice guitar solo's from Andy and Ted. Track Three: " Blind Eye" This of course is one of the bands great traditional songs. Ted Turner on vocals. Track Four: "Joshus"This is a previously unreleased song also. A nice jazzy intrumental. Track Five: "Queen of Torture" Another one of Wishbone Ash's classic songs. Nicely done too. Duel leads from Ted and Andy highlight this track. Track Six: "Alone" A instrumental on there original album. This track features vocals. Another great short track from the boys.Track Seven: Handy. This is one of my many favorite songs from the original Wishbone Ash album as well as this one. Another great double lead guitar song that also features Steve Upton on drums.Track Eight: " Errors Of MY Way" This song still is one of my favorite Wishbone Ash songs of all time. Great harmony lead guitars, as well as some great vocals. This cd, like I said, is a must for all Wishbone Ash fans. If you love the early years of Wishbone Ash, you will love this cd. Bruce H.

Still relevant.......2007-05-24

So many of the older recordings, especially jazz, don't sound as good as you remember them. First Light is as good now as it ever was. I dinged it one star for a slight loss in sound quality, but nothing that would seriously detract from enjoying it. Freddie Hubbard is still relevant.

To do this... a lush beautiful, emotionally direct recording........2007-03-29

Here it is, some 35 odd years after this recording was released and it still engages you. I realize that there have been a number of orchestral trumpet recordings attempted by the likes of Roy Hargrove, Wallace Roney and Chris Botti, but this one is, to my ears, more essential.

Freddie plays with absolutely beautiful tone throughout, surrounded by stellar musicians. CTI had this stable of musicians that were a veritable who's who.

Here you have Richard Wyands, Hubert Laws, George Benson (who is just great on two pieces that feature his soloing), Jack De Johnette, Ron Carter, Airto Moreira, Hubert Laws, Romeo Penque and others.

The title cut is now a classic and features a robust Freddie playing melodically and assertively. With a rich dark tone he shows those post bop sensibilities while backed by a rich orchestra but non-intrusive arrangement. Freddie plays everything with the melody and composition in mind. Jack De Johnette is essential on this one. He provides a propulsive but loose pulse. George Benson is just incredible on this one. When I first heard this in 1971, I immediately become a jazz guitar devotee. Because of this solo, I checked out Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Ted Dunbar, Pat Martino, Herb Ellis, Barney Kessel and others.

Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey is next and is done very nicely, with a switch in accents and tempo in the middle. George Benson's solo literally steals the song away from Freddie.

The rest of the pieces such as "Moment to Moment", "Lonely Town" and "Yesterday's Dreams" are beautifully done.

I am glad that the unique cover art was preserved. CTI always had such unique cover art and to give credit where credit is due, the one responsibile for these covers was Bob Ciano.

This one is also a great introduction and a good doorway into jazz. This recording serves both the longtime jazz fans and the new listener as well.

This one should be in every collection

One of the Greates Recordings of all time........2007-01-04

Let me tell you how I really feel. This is my favorite Jazz CD. I saw Freddie Hubbard live at the Lighthouse in Manhattan Beach, CA after this album was initially released in the early 70's. Although I was exposed to Jazz through my father and enjoyed a lot of it,I was more of an R&B and Soul music devotee. After watching Freddie, along with Jack DeJonette, Ron Carter and the others in that session, I was hooked on jazz! I know many will argue that Miles Davis is the greatest jazz trumpeter ever. But not even Miles achieves the tonal quality and purity of sound that Freddie Hubbard delivers. This is the most beautiful and rocking trumpet and fluglehorn playing you will ever hear. If you don't have this CD in your collection, you don't like music. A must have!

LUSH GRAMMY-WINNING JAZZ.......2006-12-13

Freddie Hubbard was one of the most prolific jazz trumpeters in the business. He played a hot and sassy horn! When he was teamed up with George Benson, Eric Gale, Herbie Hancock, and Ron Carter (just to name a few) on this one of many Creed Taylor-produced collaborations, he most deservedly won the Grammy!

The opening title song "First Light" has an ethereal beginning with a diverse arrangement. An unusual arrangement of Paul McCartney's "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" is most satisfying. Henry Mancini's "Moment To Moment" has a hauntingly sweet sound. "Lonely Town" is darkly complex.

There are many sides and moods to each of the songs within this original work. With stylish jazzy rhythms and rich orchestrations, this is THE Freddie Hubbard album to have!

First Among Hubbard's Works (Probably).......2006-09-20

Trumpet maestro Freddie Hubbard took home a Grammy Award for his 1971 album FIRST LIGHT, and it's easy to hear why. Lush and emotive, pairing virtuoso flights by Hubbard and guitarist George Benson with melodramatic orchestrations that just manage to avoid going over the top, this is indeed the sort of recording which anyone, of whatever musical taste, could fall in love with on his first listen. Its easy appeal is backed up by solid writing and playing, however - most notably on Hubbard's mammoth title track, an eleven-minute tour de force built around a gorgeously descending head you'll never forget once you've heard it. The artist's - and CTI Records' - approach is similarly effective on a slew of covered tunes by modern composers such as Paul McCartney and Leonard Bernstein, with a powerful original by CTI house arranger Don Sebesky ("Fantasy in D"), omitted from the original LP release for some ludicrous reason, bringing things to a fine finish. The work of keyboardist Richard Wyands also deserves mention; though given no real solo space, he adds considerably to the album's grandly romantic ambience. In short, FIRST LIGHT is first rate, and no one need hesitate in adding it to his or her cache of passionate, classy music. A triumph!

Traditional Christmas Music .......2007-01-24

If you love traditional Christmas music, done in traditional style (i.e., no rock or jazz influence), this CD is for you. The Robert Shaw Chorale, the "gold standard" of quality choral music, sings much loved carols, with some lesser-known pieces as well. Some are a cappella; some include a full orchestral accompaniment. My favorites on this CD are "We Three Kings," "Bring a Torch, Jeannette Isabella," and "I Saw Three Ships."

The quintessential Christmas recording.......2005-12-09

This recording seems to elicit universal and heartfelt praise. Who am I to dispute that? The performance is terrific, just as described by the other Amazon reviewers, no doubt about it.

However, I do have one bone to pick with this recording. There just isn't enough of it. With material as good as this, that is a real loss!

A Top List Christmas CD.......2004-12-28

I bought this cd long ago, and have enjoyed it immensely each year. It is the perfect blend of celebration and meditation. Orchestra and choir combine in four distinct groupings, and a capella arrangements complete the masterful collection. The orchestral arrangements will make the hairs on your neck stand up, and your stomach quiver with all the excitement you ever felt as a child at Christmas. Adeste Fidelis is performed as few other ensembles have ever come close. The a capella arrangements will all, without exception, be on your yearly list of must-hear holiday arrangements. Truly a top list Christmas CD, essential for every family who celebrates this feast.

The best.......2004-01-02

I own approximately 35 Christmas choral CDs - including choirs and groups such as the Cambridge Singers and the King Singers. I also own two Christmas albums with Robert Shaw and the Atlantic symphony. This performance with the Robert Shaw Chorale is old but it is still my favorite. The arrangements are magnificent, the sound is brilliant, and the choir and orchestra are precise with wonderful volume control. Buy and enjoy!

How do you describe perfection?.......2003-12-14

This is my favorite Christmas CD. Nothing comes close. I thoroughly enjoyed learning much of the music in high school choir over 30 years ago. The music has never left me. The four medleys are the arrangements of Robert Russell Bennett titled "The Many Moods of Christmas". The arrangements seem to have a freshness about them even after listening numerous times.

Interspersed with the medleys are a cappella carols.

All of this music is wonderfully performed by the Robert Shaw Chorale, the a cappella selections recorded in 1957 and the medleys in 1963.

Four decades have proven that this is the standard in choral music. The clarity of text, the richness of tone, the beauty of harmony combine to present the message of Christmas in the manner that only music can do.

These words are no surprise to those familiar with choral music in the United States. If you are not so familiar, but would like to enjoy Christmas music at its most beautiful, you can do no better than acquiring this CD.

Enjoying The Pleasures of K. Battle & C. Parkening.......2007-05-06

Whether you are very familiar with these two artists or have never heard either one, you will delight in this musical collaboration. Only a guitarist of Christopher Parkening's stature could be the ideal accompaniment to the perfection of Kathleen Battle's voice. The music ranges from selections by John Dowland to American spirituals, Bach/Gounod, Villa-Lobos, Granados and some Spanish folk songs. The result is a coherent, soothing and utterly delightful listening experience. You will revisit this album often, and always be glad that you have it. For fans of Kathleen Battle and Christopher Parkening, I think it is a must.

We always enjoyed seeing and hearing Battle in concerts, usually on the television and Parkening has been a favorite guitarist. To listen to these two fine artists in concert is a real treat.

Superb technique, emotionally flat, but enjoyable even so........2005-05-25

I can't imagine these songs being performed with any greater technical brilliance than they are by Parkening and Battle on this CD. Both are virtuosos, him in the guitar, her the voice. Their skill is particularly apparent in the Dowland songs, the "Ave Maria", and the Bachianas brasileiras no. 5 (for me, the high point of the recording), which are all in a formal style well suited to the talents of the performers.

I compare the Brazilian songs to the version recorded by Salli Terri with Laurindo Almeida in the late '50's on "Duets with Spanish Guitar", which I have listened to repeatedly since I first heard it in 1959. Battle's phrasing, enunciation, and vocal skill are far superior to Terri's, but Terri brought a level of emotion to her singing that Battle seems to lack. Where Battle's perfection enhances her superb performances of the Dowland and Villa-Lobos pieces, it seems to detract from her performance of the Brazilian folk pieces.

I find this to be true again in the spirituals - vocal perfection and control detracting from the "soul" required to bring out the "spiritual" feeling. Imagine these same pieces sung by Mahalia Jackson or Aretha Franklin and you'll understand my point.

Parkening's performance has the same quality - technical virtuosity, especially noticeable in his lute-like technique in the Dowland solo - but lacking in emotional depth.

The classical selections are highly recommended, the folk pieces a bit disappointing, but overall an enjoyable recording.

THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE BATTLE ALBUMS, HER SWEET VOICE IS ACCOMPAINED BY THE GUITAR VIRTUOSO CHRISTOPHER PARKENING, TOGETHER CREATE A TENDER, DELIGHTFUL & BEAUTIFUL LISTENING EXPERIENCE. BACHIANAS BRASILEIRAS N- 5 HAS IT`S BEST PERFORMANCE IN THIS CD.

Fans, maybe, but I must say I'm not a huge fan of Kathleen Battle or opera or songs in different languages, either. My mom is, though. And through her I have heard Kathleen's best. And her very best (if you ask me) is one of the tracks ON THIS CD titled "Ain't that good news," even though it should be called "Ain'ta dat good news," since that is how its sung. It is a really good song (ask anybody) with a little surprise high-note at the end. If I were you I would (if not buy this CD right here and now) then go to [a book store] and see if their computers will let you hear "Ain't that good news" because that song is great.

In this beautifully chosen program of mostly a cappella arrangements, Robert Shaw and the Robert Shaw Chamber Singers deliver the Christmas story in tones of gentle and moving splendor. The carols and sacred settings recorded here are all of an intimate sort, and the rapturous, gently expressive realizations Shaw and his singers give them prove unfailingly appealing. Particularly moving is the newest work on the disc, a setting of "O magnum mysterium" by the American composer Morten Lauridsen. Franz Biebl's "Ave Maria" is another gem, as is the arrangement by Healy Willan of the French carol "What Is This Lovely Fragrance?" The offering includes a pair of chorales from Bach's Christmas Oratorio and two wonderful Christmas works by Benjamin Britten: "A Hymn to the Virgin" and A Ceremony of Carols, both well done, even if the sound of sopranos and altos (rather than boy trebles) in the latter takes some getting used to. --Ted Libbey

The music is beautiful of course. The Robert Shaw Chorale is a high quality group of singers, and the arrangements they sing are really nice. Because of the age of the recording today's standards of equpment and tonal quality simply weren't available but the upgrade from analog vinyl was well-done. I shall look for more of these.

This is an excellent ablum. The music is lovely and quite varied. While there are many of the familiar favorites, there are also many new and different songs and the whole CD is a delight to listen to.

a perfect Ceremony of Carols!.......2005-12-22

This is the finest recording of Britten's A Ceremony of Carols I've ever come across, and there are plenty of versions to choose from. The King's College Choir rendition suffers from overstuffed acoustics, a constant with that choir, and their recording of Ceremony of Carols falls short in the requisite rhythmic clarity and intensity. The Christ Church, Oxford version is plodding, and lacks sparkle. Harry Christopher's The Sixteen come close, with marvelous sonics and ecstatic diction, but fall apart in the exacting 'This Little Babe' round with uneven cohesion, and strange stressed notes that ruin the waterfall effect so felicitously construed by Britten. I've not heard Britten's own conducted version, but he scrupulously insisted on boy trebles, and it's difficult if not impossible to conjure a more perfect rendering than the one given here by Shaw and his Chamber Singers. 'This Little Babe' is incomparable in each and all of its rapid fire contours, which is no mean feat. Mezzo-soprano Nanette Soles deserves special mention for incandescent singing on 'That Younge Child". The luminous pacing of 'There is no rose of such virtue' is notable, and to his credit Shaw employs the ecclesiastical pronunciation of the various Latin passages, unlike The Sixteen (and most other English choir recordings of this piece) who insist on an idiomatic British pronunciation of Latin, which offers nothing but distraction. Some will prefer boy treble singers, an attractive option, but for high musical values and the art they inevitably enshrine, it's impossible to be disappointed with this profoundly wrought version of Ceremony of Carols. Bach's 'Break Forth, O beauteous heavenly light' is just right, and I'd not heard 'Heavenly Light' by Aleksandr Kopylov; both are favorable additions to an excellent recording. Recommended.

Brilliant compilation.......2005-03-16

This is an absolutely outstanding collection of carols - some of them well-known, some of them obscure. As a choral singer, I've had the pleasure of singing many of these pieces, and I was delighted when I found them all in one place, and done by an ensemble so accomplished as the Robert Shaw Chamber Singers! It just isn't Christmas for me without this recording.

I prefer to hear the voices and the words of the carols, and this one has too much other sound (maybe even the use of massed voices); I have a hard time hearing what they are singing.

The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

It has such beautiful music. I first heard "Tribal Hymn" on XM satellite radio and then I bought this CD. I'm a huge, huge fan of Enigma's music and this is very similar to their music. This CD is mostly instrumental with just a few lyrics here and there, just like Enigma's music, and it's just so uplifting to listen to.

Scenic Listening is pure phonic imagery. Oil on canvas for anyone who has an ear. Places reachable only by kevin Wood's music. Pianistically dusted studio perfection driven by throaty accompaniments and amazing rhythm. It conjures a spiritual gallery of the most realistic paintings you will ever hear. Scenic Listening is a great album and a genre by itself.

I was fortunate enough to hear one of Kevin's songs on an NPR radio show and was hooked. His style is unique, the music is wonderful, and I can't get enough. Really looking forward to him completing his next CD cause by then the laser will have burned a hole through my Scenic Listening disc. This is a CD you have to listen to in order to appreciate it!!

Move over Enya, Loreena McKennitt, and New Age music - the dawn of a spiritually uplifting genre has arrived! The title tells it all. Scenic Listening will take you to the beautiful forests, the nightime deserts, the soothing ocean waves, and the majestic snow covered mountains. Nature and music has never sounded so wonderful! I strongly recommend this CD to everyone! We can hardly wait for David's second CD! It too will be greatly received, I am sure!

I have been addicted to this CD for months. I heard one of the songs on the NEW AGE satellite channel and thought I'd give the CD a chance. The entire CD is awesome. The music reminds me of Enigma, Deep Forest, and Medicine Woman (except no fruity bird sounds). Sure enough, as I checked out some stuff about Kevin Wood, it said his influences were: Enya, Patrick O'Hearn, Deep Forest, Sacred Spirit, Enigma, and George Winston. If you like the sounds of those musicians, you'll love this CD. The piano pieces are exceptional and every song has a good rhythm/beat. If you take a chance, ENJOY!
