If Roast Beef of Old England isn't enough to spawn a dose of contact scurvy, many other of these two dozen salty tunes will set the boat a-rocking. Treasures such as "A Jolly Sailor's True Description of a Man-of-War" and "Drops of Brandy" detail life among British seamen of the early 1800s without dredging up too much of the usual pirates, shipwrecks, or mutiny. It's an historical document of the regular life at sea, inspired by the British Navy novels of Patrick O'Brian, with intentions to anchor the writing in the ordinary sounds and stories of those fictionalized seafaring times. Glad fiddle, fife, and Jerry Bryant's humble six-man choral crew Starboard Mess spill the beans in suitable fashion without a sailor's colorful vocabulary. They supply the "yo ho ho" and annotations, you bring the rum and black powder. --Ian Christe
Customer Reviews:
Set Sail With These Great Songs.......2007-01-28
Jerry Bryant and his Starboard Mess offer up to the listener some wonderful performances of traditional British sailor tunes. They are all performed acapella, and despite other reviewers saying that these songs lack spirit, I find that there's plenty in store. Pennywhistle and fiddle songs are also thrown in and do nothing but add to the enjoyment of this album. Read your favorite Jack Aubrey novel or other seafaring tales such as "Treasure Island" while listening to this album to truly enhance your literary experience. My personal favorites include "Spanish Ladies" and "Bay of Biscay-o."
You should see the looks I get from the little wannabe thugs in their tricked out Hondas listening to hip-hop when I pull up next to them in my conservative white Toyota Camry and I'm belting out lines like "We'll rant and we'll roar like true British sailors...." Jay-Z can't even hold a candle to these wonderful old tunes.
Highly recommended.
Jack Aubrey would have loved it..........2007-01-09
This is the real thing! It takes some time to get into these songs...but then I started to join in. For someone reading O'Brian its a MUST.
Good traditional stuff.......2007-01-05
Just what I was looking for, some traditional British songs from the age of sail. I recomend this for anyone with an interest in British maritime and naval history.
Continuing Enjoyment.......2006-05-05
I've owned this CD for a few years now, and it hasn't become stale yet.
Being a 'younger' person with generally 'younger' preferences in music, and yet still a person thoroughly devoted to Patrick O'Brian and all his works, on first listening I was doubtful.
Another two or three spins around the CD player, though, and I was hooked. Crisp, clear and obviously as historically accurate as they can be, these songs give delight even now.
Best use? Volume dialled up to eleven for the morning drive to work, bellowing along at the top of my voice - and often the bottom of my range! Heart of Oak, Roast Beef of Old England, The Shannon and the Chesapeake - uproarious. Sailor's Jacket is the foot-tappingest instrumental; it still sets my toes a-jumping. And the sweeter songs? Give them plenty of wellie .. Adieu Sweet Lovely Nancy is fabulous.
Other big numbers: A Jolly Sailor's True Description of a Man-of-War, A New Sea Song (Sweethearts & Wives) - which has some fabulously 'historically accurate' narrative within (POB readers will know whereof I speak! ;-} - and Distressed Men-of-War - another song referred to within the POB Canon.
Heartily recommended.
Great CD!.......2005-10-28
I am very impressed with the quality of this CD. The sound is clear and the tones perfect. It was a surprise just how familiar all the song is! They are very vivid and worldly. I bought this CD with out knowing what was on it; I was truly surprised and happy with it. My 6th graders will enjoy learning to this CD, and as well as singing the songs to complement our reading of Treasure Island.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent argument for watching Shakespeare's plays.......2005-11-29
'Shakespeare's Musick' by Musicians of the Globe, lead by Philip Pickett is, like a similar recording, 'Songs and Dances from Shakespeare' by The Broadside Band' is a very nice recreation of what you would have heard at the Globe Theatre in London during or after the performances of Will Shakespeare's plays. I will also say that I believe it is just a bit better than the alternative recording if only for it's fewer 'Hey Nonnie Nonnies'. But, both recordings are not the best you can find of Renaissance music. Compared to excellent recordings of Renaissance dances and liturgical music, these seem to suffer from being out of context.
These are well worth the listen, but they will probably not set your toes to tapping as you might to performances by, for example, the Renaissance specialist band Piffaro.
Elizabethan Surprise!.......2000-02-12
If someone had asked me before I listened to the music provided on this CD if I liked English music of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, I would have wrinkled my nose and said a resounding "Yuck!" I came across "Shakespeare's Musick" quite by accident at the local library. I was working on a project dealing with William Shakespeare and decided to take this CD home to see if it would fit into my theme. From the very first song to the very last, Philip Pickett and the Musicians of the Globe had me captivated. The sound is pure and lively and takes the listener on a ride that transcends time. It certainly made this listener a convert! I am now purchasing "Shakespeare's Musick" to add to my own collection and would highly recommend its addition to anyone elses. It will open your ears to a whole other world of sound -- sound that not only tickles the fancy, but enchants the soul.

Customer Reviews:
The most consistent album from a talented family group.......2004-05-03
Sometimes I surprise myself! Don't ask me why I bought their "Collection", but I did - and what a great album it was. As usual with me, I bought all the other albums and this is, for me, the most consistent of them all, in what is a very strong set of albums.
The Rankin Family produce excellent traditional tracks (like " Fair And Tender Ladies") and mix them with folk/pop songs like "Orangedale Whistle" and "Gilles Mountain" to name but two very good tracks. Others are "Fisherman's Son", "You Left A Flower" and the title track which keep the standard up to a very high level.
Simple arrangements, well played and with great individual singing or even better harmonies, this is an classic album unfortunately not known to most of the great British music public, which is a shame. Every time I hear it, I feel all the better for it - it makes you glad to be around.
All their albums are very good and it made me wonder why they decided to call "time" on singing as a group, but maybe they wanted to finish on a very big high. Also, maybe they thought the band had run its course. The fact that they stopped making albums will no doubt be the one thing that the "music fan from San Diego" will be pleased about, having read his/her review (what was (s)he expecting?). The number of people who read that and thought it helped make up their mind (a big zero) says it all.
Whatever, after buying the Collection, go and buy the rest. However, this should be the first - you won't regret it.
Some cuts excellent, others so-so.......2002-11-02
Every now and again I buy an album simply because one of the cuts is outstanding and moving. This was my motivation here. The selection Fair and Tender Ladies is even better than the sixties PPM version!
Fare Thee Well Love is also very heart felt and moving. The rest of the cuts are somewhere between outstanding and somewhat tedious to listen to.
None the less, I felt the price for the two songs mentioned was worth the price.
A great down-home folksome album.......2001-08-09
Now boys and girls.. gather 'round the fire. It's chilly out there, so let's warm ourselves with our voices and fiddles. And Ukeleles. And Kazoos. And Harmonicas. And geeetars.
The album sure left me speechless! Never before have I had the opportunity to hear such a wide variety of groovin' tunes. Here's an album that'll help y'all get down with yer funky selves. Now clap along everyone! The Rankin Family's a comin' and they're bringin' a trainload of goopy nostalgia and folksy yet weary melodrama. Tell my ma when I get home, I wish the Rankins would leave me alone!
A wonderful mix of new and traditional songs.......2000-12-17
Whether singing original compositions or traditional ones, no-one does it quite like the Rankins. This is their 2nd album and every bit as good as their first, which I recommend also. They also sing some of the traditional songs in Gaelic which makes for a refreshing change. Unfortunately John Morris Rankin was killed in a freak accident last year, and will be very sadly missed by all. For anyone interested in East Coast/Maritime music, this is a must.
Celtic Music at it's Best.......2000-06-18
If your looking for a nice celtic cd, then this is it. Rankin Family does celtic music like no other. They have a balance of slow and up beat selections, and do them all with style. This is definatly a great CD to pick up.

Customer Reviews:
True Blue LaRue.......2005-11-14
Hearing Custer LaRue's chiming voice for the first time recently was a truly startling moment in my quest for finding perfect, ethereal, moody melodies. As a matter of fact, her voice is actually astonishing. It evokes continuous waves of emotion. "Custer LaRue sings The Daemon Lover" is masterful and filled with emotional strife. You can almost feel the temperature change when you hear LaRue's lament. Listening to the lonesome and almost wailing cry of "Lord Ronald" washes shivers over me every single time. This collection as a whole is both a mysterious and emotional journey that wraps itself completely around you. Could she be the best kept secret in the world of classic voices? Methinks the answer is a definitive yes.
Soulful and Bittersweet Ballads.......2003-08-19
Several of the ballads on this wonderful CD will have the toughest misty-eyed by the end. Among my favorites "Binnorie", "Queen Jane" and "Lord Randal", the latter two sung with such heavy pathos that you can nearly hear your heart beating. Wonderful, powerful stuff.
Pure beauty.......2002-06-10
What? Feeble?? Maybe compared to a foghorn, but if that's what you want, you can sit in a harbor. But listen for yourself. I believe you will agree that Custer LaRue's voice is enthralling.
Her voice is a mountain stream: pure, clear, endlessly enticing, infintitely intriguing.
For this very reason, she is not cut out to sing rough sailors' songs. A L Lloyd sings "Fare you Well, Lovely Nancy" with rude tenderness that is quite moving. Custer LaRue's version is a scold, imposing current values on hapless sailing men. A pity, because she is a wonderful singer, America's best. But she really blows this song.
One song only though. Everything else is pure gold. I have enjoyed this CD for a couple years now, and it gets better with every listening. Treat yourself.
Pure magic.......2002-02-27
I have had and loved this album for years, but it took on a whole other dimension for me when I realized how much our infant daughter loves it. When she wakes up screaming from nightmares, I put the Daemon Lover in the CD player, turn up the volume, and within seconds she is calm and relaxed. At night she goes to sleep by traditional, soothing balads like The Ash Grove, which is a beautiful song. This album has an effect on her like no other!
Not just for babies, though, The Daemon lover is magic for adults as well. Ms. LaRue's voice is pure sunlight, and I strongly disagree with the reviewer who said the recording is feeble. As a matter of fact, I used it as a reference recording when purchasing a new amplifier several years ago. The soundstage is broad and the vocals are clear as glass. Highly recommended for audiophiles.
excellent -- traditional folk ballads.......2000-05-27
Traditional folk ballads from America, Scotland, and England. The well-known and talented early music ensemble, Baltimore Consort, does the instrumentals. LaRue does a good job with the vocals and her voice is well suited to the music.
This music is simple and very appealing. A wonderful CD.

Excellent Shakespeare Compilation.......2001-09-27
This CD has it all: Shakespeare period music for mood and background music, Songs actually written into Shakespeare's plays and talent infused into every track. Every song is done well by talented musicians and vocalists and the selection is great. If you are looking for the songs you see featured in your favorite Shakespeare play and would like to hear them, or would like background music to play while you peruse "The Merry Wives of Windsor" or any other plays from that time period, I recommend this CD.
Evocative Shakespeare.......2000-08-31
To your joy you can find beautiful old english songs of he shakespeare era. Nice selection but incompleet. Recomended for those intrested in Shakesperean plays as well.

Customer Reviews:
Classical Wonder.......2003-05-18
As an avid classical music listener, and cellist, Classical Heat was the perfect blend of energized, fast-paced works, and then on the second disk, a more mellow, yet still firey, works. I would recommend this CD set to every classical listener, even people that don't normally like the classical genre will enjoy this cd.
Beware the Flame.......2002-06-14
Trumpet blasts, french horn flares, all the way to the subtle reeds of the bassoon. This album will keep you interested and awake all the way through. Paired with its sister album "Classical Chill", they can be the perfect mix you have been looking for. Musician and listener alike: This CD is a must have.

Customer Reviews:
Great music - fun to singalong.......2007-03-10
We have the Christmas Revels CD and loved that, but I can't stand Christmas music in February, so I bought this CD. My family adores it -- my kids, 4 and 6, love to sing along to it. There are a few drinking songs that praise alcoholic beverages (Good Ale, Jone's Ale), but I'm not sure my kids get the gist and it doesn't bother me.
I felt this was well worth the cost -- there are a lot of songs on here. I love that we can sing along to music that isn't sacchrine, dumb-downed, kids music and I like the historical nature of the tunes (the liner notes are great -- they give background on the May festival and each song has a few sentences of background, as well as providing the lyrics. There are a few songs that are instrumental, but most have singing).
Another album my family is enjoying is Dean Shostack Davy Crockett's Fiddle - they are instrumental early American fiddle tunes.
Very fresh and fun........2001-09-06
I defy you to not sing along with this album. The songs are catcy without being tiring, folksy without being simple, nostalgic without being sentimental. The Revel Singers make you feel like you're in the midst of a big party full of boisterous people having a great time. I was introduced to this album via my local eclectic radio station that played "Jones's Ale" one morning and I was hooked.
Refreshing Change from Tired Carols.......1999-12-29
Probably taken from one of the delightful annual Revels Christmas/holiday musicals, the sound is Christmas-y without being cloying. It's joyful, fresh and charming.
