This is it..........2005-08-30

This is easily my favorite of the Ensemble Unicorn albums, providing an excellent contrast to Carl Orff's far more modern rendition (especially track 13). This CD is a must have, and three of the tracks, Bache, Bene Venies, Vite perdite, and Tempus est iocundum stand out as some of the best renditions of early music that I have ever heard.

This recording blends the impeccable balance of the instrumentation with excellent vocals, (listen for Bernhard Landauer and Eric Mentzel, the countertenor and tenor, respectively). This is as much as you could ask for, and certainly more than you could expect, in an Early Music recording.

A feisty little musical riot.......2005-07-12

If you've ever been even slightly curious as to how Medieval secular music might have sounded but were unsure if it was for you this is a great place to start. At this price Naxos makes musical terra incognita much easier to explore. The results here are an absolute riot and are barrels of fun. There is life, rhythm and colour in abundance - all of which makes it irresistible from start to finish. The only word of warning is that this definitely NOT Gregorian chant and if that is what you want you will be in for a huge shock. The music here is gregarious, bawdy and populated with drunkards and virgins being deflowered. It is really all completely over the top.

As always Michael Posch is to be thoroughly commended for the sheer spontaneity of the musical feast that he unfailingly serves up. Too often music making of Medieval music seems awfully dry and academic - whereas this is way too riotous for that, even though a good deal of musicological research has gone to recreating Medieval performing practice.

The final carrot to go and buy this recording is the fantastic recorded sound. Naxos you have put many a major recording firm to utter shame with this release, who all to frequently demand several times the price for dreadful recordings/transfer - with Virgin Classics being the worst offender. Audiophiles after a miraculous bargain should pounce at the oppurtunity. Soundstaging is glorious, with air around the instruments, balance, detail, focus balanced by some warmth. It is all there for the taking!

A wondrous look into secular medieval music.......2004-09-07

I originally purchased this album because of one song: Bacche Bene Venies. I have heard countless versions of this song from varying quality ensembles.

Out of all the arrangements of any of the original Carmina Buranas, this album contains all of them. The always-brilliant Ensemble Unicorn has once again captured the mood of the music, showing the listener what these songs and poems really were: (often very filthy) drinking songs and poems for the medieval pilgrim. This album is a must have for the early music enthusiast.

More fine familiar material from Ensemble Unicorn.......2003-03-20

Ensemble Unicorn and Oni Wytars, as I've noted in other reviews here, seem to shine especially on one-line monodic material where the performers must make their own arrangements. This is music tailor made to that approach --- especially since not all of the poems have their own tunes, and those that do have them recorded in hard to read neumes rather than staff notation. Melodies for the poems with no music at all are often borrowed from other period pieces.

The arrangements may be too busy for some early music purists, but they are quite entertaining, and the experience of listening to this is more like listening to a pop or folk record than classical music. That makes this recording the most consistently listenable record of the material since Thomas Binkley's versions of twenty years ago. High points of this record are the fine performance of the timely -Ecce torpet probitas- and the duelling fiddles of -Clauso Chronos-. You also get the near-mandatory -Exiit diluculo- and -Tempus est jocundum-.

Why is This Out-of-Print? It's Fantastic........2007-03-23

The late Eighties was rather thin culturally; this was one of the few things musically that endured in memory -- Stearns' score for the 45 minute IMAX spectacular, CHRONOS. The film was very derivative of 'Koyanniquasti' or however one spells it, but the music was anything but Phillip Glass' trademarked arpeggio epics. "Chronos" is more along the lines of high-end Vangelis (circa Blade Runner score era)--romantic, majestic, careening into the stratospheric towards the end. Why is this spectacular recording out of print? Anyone who loves space/electronica/soundtrack/trip will value this well-constructed ride.

Fabulous Music!.......2003-11-21

If you are a fan of early music you will LOVE the Toronto Consort. Actually, they're the group that made me a fan in the first place - with this CD!!! Since then I have puchased many more of their albums and seen them live. Excellent!

Clever and exotic arrangements by the Toronto Consort.......2002-11-25

The wanderings of troubadours and minnesingers, the crusades, and pilgrimages to sites such as Rome and Santiago de Compostela--all these journeys are touched on in this collection, and the musical flavors of French and German music blend with those of Spain and the Near East to produce fun, feel-good music that surely would have cheered any weary traveler. The spirited Toronto Consort is joined by guests Ben Grossman (percussion, ud and organistrum) and Katherine Hill (vocals, vielle and rebec) as well as former member Alison Mackay (vielle). One of the great things about medieval monophonic music is hearing how different ensembles choose to arrange and perform the same pieces. Such variety was surely common in an age where there were no recordings and rarely any scores, so that each sounding of a piece was live, unique and subject to interpretation. To listen to and compare other recordings of medieval pilgrimage music, check out "Llibre Vermell" by Sarband, "The Black Madonna: Pilgrim Songs from the Monastery of Montserrat" by Ensemble Unicorn, and "On the Way to Bethlehem: Music of the Medieval Pilgrim" by Ensemble Unicorn and Ensemble Oni Wytars. Schnittke violin concerto N.4 best performance.......2007-06-10

This violin concerto is my favorite. It is Schnittke at his best, with amazing orchestral colors, frightening sounds and serene beauty. Kremer is still scratchy but manages to give a meaningful performance well seconded by the orchestra.
If the music and music making are 5 stars, this is not true of Teldec's sound engineers. In order to capture the "visual cadenza", gestures where the soloist plays but doesn't make sound -a sense of what lies behind the soundscape according to Schnittke-, composer, soloist and producers agreed to replace the visual gestures by a series of loud breathings. Already the tonal balance of the recording is slanted toward a rich upper midrange -orchestral tuttis are not very defined with too much reverb of the hall, a typical attribute of recording engineers in the 90's who believed digital could replace the lessons learned by the best of Mercury living presence or Decca- but during these passages, they must have opened a microphone to capture Kremer's breathing. Had they mixed this album on decent equipment it would have been evident that the midrange level during portions the second movements is simply unbearable and ruins the musical experience! Indeed during the finale, the violin of Kremer seems taken from different positions depending if the music is loud or not. Shame on Teldec's engineers for such sloppy job. This disc should be re-issued with a new mastering so this gets corrected.
That is why I give only 4 stars.

Unusual "mini-concert" with a Schnittke centerpiece.......2006-07-22

This somewhat esoteric Russian program begins with the charming little Stravinsky "Pastorale" for violin and wind quartet. An arrangement of the composer's "Vocalese" from 1907, this droll piece makes a perfect opening for this unusual program, and is beautifully done by members of the Philharmonia.

But listeners should brace themselves for what follows, the disturbing, violent (and totally terrific) Schnittke Violin Concerto No. 4 (1984). In four movements, it lurches from genial passages to those that are positively scorching. Gidon Kremer (the work's dedicatee) will be hard to top in his frightening intensity, including some eerie vocal work, and Christoph Eschenbach and the Philharmonia are right up there with him in virtuosity. It is easily one of the most brilliant Schnittke performances I've ever heard.

An orchestral suite from Arthur Vincent Lourie's opera, "The Blackamoor of Peter the Great" (1961) comes next and is a fascinating oddity, and also notable for Schnittke's hand in orchestrating one of the middle movements, the "Ballet No. 3: Hymn to Eros." Throughout, the language is not too distant from Schnittke himself, perhaps with Shostakovich hovering nearby. The Philharmonia woodwind work is particularly notable and satisfying, but the entire ensemble presents the score with great power and commitment (as with everything here).

Stravinsky appears again in a charming instrumentation of two short excerpts from Tchaikovsky's "Sleeping Beauty" which make a lovely break after the intensity of the Schnittke and Lourie works. Stravinsky's effort here transforms the sound into something resembling his own "Baiser de la fee" ("The Fairy's Kiss") and is completely winning, including a star turn for solo violin that Kremer executes beautifully.

The ten-minute Lourie that follows, "Funeral Games in Honor of Chronos" (1964) is scored for three flutes, piano (Eschenbach, who contributes some gorgeous playing) and cymbals, and makes a beautiful, somber ending to the program. I really admire the slightly offbeat programming of this recording, which combines massive orchestral works with lighter chamber pieces in between, and shows Eschenbach at his most imaginative.

Once again Kremer shows himself to be one of the current scene's great champions of this repertoire, and the Schnittke in particular, is one of the finest examples of this composer's output on disc. (It has been re-issued on a Teldec set of all four violin concertos, all conducted by Eschenbach.) The sound quality is excellent throughout, with a keen "you are there" presence.

NOTE: I notice this is now out-of-print. While it's worth seeking out as a used copy, I can't really see paying close to $100 for it that some are asking. However, the Schnittke is available on the re-released set of all four Schnittke violin concertos, and highly recommended.

if you enjoy modern classical russian music you will enjoy this album. it is one of my favorites CDs.

It's downright impossible for Springfield, Missouri sextet Chronos to escape comparisons with the Dave Matthews Band. Like the forerunner's concert lineup, Chronos consists of guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, sax, and violin. Also, well- known riffs from DMB classics like "Warehouse," "So Much to Say," "Crash," and "Don't Drink the Water" can be heard in a number of songs throughout Chronos' debut. But the obvious influences don't overshadow this band's quality, or the fact that they sound a lot older and more experienced than they really aremost of them are still in or barely out of their teens. Chronos is committed to glorifying God with thoughtfully spiritual lyrics and excellence in music, which definitely shows in their songs and their impressive mastery over the instruments. A strong lead vocalist, Doug Ray's soft tenor sounds less like Matthews and more like Bruce Hornsby or Gary Chapman. Besides, artists like Todd Agnew, Big Daddy Weave, and All Together Separate have emulated the DMB sound in Christian music and only come so close. Chronos does it so well, I look forward to hearing how they grow in years to come.
