never listened to any of his music but wow im hooked and looking out for moreeeeeeeeeeeeeee

5 out of 5 stars "Spiral" is among my favourites albums on CD!.......2007-04-12

I won this CD as a Birhday gift. This one is really fantastic, because Vangelis can create an atmosphere with a lot of magic, which gives us an impression of infinite somewhere and unknown (vide "To The Unknown Man"). And, look, this title was released in 1977. Another curiosity was the track "3 + 3", which was used to playing on several channels of television, on radio stations in Brazil.
To sum up, I like this album a lot. "Spiral" has to remastered several times.

4 out of 5 stars Another fine example of progressive electronic from Vangelis.......2007-02-15

This 1977 release is another great Vangelis album and once again demonstrates his skill as a fantastic composer and familiarity with a wide range of instruments (synthesizers, percussion, and drums). The music of Vangelis is varied enough that it could defy description, yet it seems clear that "progressive electronic" aptly describes Spiral. The four tracks on the album range in length from 5'14' to 9'35" and cover a wide range of dynamics and moods. Synth textures/timbres of all description are used on the album ranging from the cheery and upbeat to the spacey and gloomy, making for a very interesting listening experience. Fortunately, the synth textures he uses are very warm and natural sounding and Vangelis is extremely clever with respect to orchestration.

Although a complete list of synthesizers is not provided in the credits, being a bit of a synthesizer nut I did a little bit of digging on the internet and came up with some detailed notes regarding synth use on Spiral. Apparently, 1977 was the year that the Yamaha CS80 came out and Vangelis used it to take the place of the ARP Pro Soloist that he had played on several earlier recordings - in fact, the natural sounding tones of the CS80 are featured on every track. Other pieces of equipment used by Vangelis include the ARP Odyssey; Korg Minipops 120; Roland System 100; and an ARP sequencer (this instrument is used a lot too). For those of you that are curious, the Korg Minipops is a drum computer - my guess is that the drum computer was used on To the Unknown Man although I am not positive. Vangelis also used three effects units to create the odd sounding voice on Ballad including the Roland Space Echo 201; Boss Chorus Ensemble; and the EMS Vocoder 1000.

All in all, this is yet another great album of progressive electronic music from Vangelis and is recommended along with Heaven and Hell (1975); Albedo 0.39 (1976); and Opera Sauvage (1979).

5 out of 5 stars Where's the album?.......2005-03-08

It's a pity the album isn't available! It's one of my favourite albums.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Mood Music.......2001-07-31

This album promises to put you in whatever mood you may.

"Spiral" is a vicious nor'easter the size of The Perfect Storm, "Ballad" is wistful, "Dervish" is frenzied jazz, "Unknown Man" is a prelude to "Chariots of Fire", and "3+3" completes the set.

Companion to Albedo 0.39 for the Vangelis Starter Collection.

5 out of 5 stars Ubaka is joy through music.......2004-02-16

I saw Ubaka last night and I've never encountered a performer with so much LIFE in her. Her performance was drum and voice only(plus guest drummers) which added a more tribal feeling to her music. The CD is more melodic and in all honesty probably easier for a "non-live" listener to experience. If you have any opportunity to see her perform live do it. She is a life-empowering person who reminds you create a great memory for yourself by creating a terrific RIGHT NOW. And she does not preach (hey she's from Brooklyn) but reminds the room to celebrate life and our bodies instead of becoming a tv-watching robot. I'm unsure if her tone is considered "flat" (she has a gorgeous sultry voice) but she embodies what music and rhythm IS. She makes the sound alive through the bodies who could not stand still to her drumming. Grammy pop winners should be ashamed at the crap they produce when compared to someone like Ubaka. She even got my boyfriend to dance (well sort of)! Enjoy and live.

1 out of 5 stars Challenged vocals, lyrics and sound.......2002-05-22

Wow. I hate to be critical, but this is the worst cd I have ever listened to. The lyrics are kindergardenesque, with vocals that are flat and out of tune. Most of the music was just plain bad. I was really looking forward to some depth of soul and ancient rhythms, and chanting with deep meaningful lyrics. There is one good drum jam, but if you aren't turned off after the first song, then you're a better man than I.

5 out of 5 stars Spiral Dance-gets and keeps you moving.......2001-09-02

Ubaka Hill is one awesome artist. This work is no exception. It works at home, in the car and at work. You weave in and out of the rhythms with the musicians. It can turn a bad day good and make you feel oh so good. A must for all collections!

    5 out of 5 stars Great Energy!!!!!!.......2001-06-30

Ubaka and friends are so into the primal beat. I highly recommend this recording for those who love tribal drumming and those who are into energy work. These earthy songs can really connect you to your spirit and get your feet moving. I loved it!

2 out of 5 stars Should stick to drumming.......2000-09-23

My apologies for the harshness of the title, but it's true. Track 3 is totally awesome and typyfies what I had expected from the CD. The rest of the songs really grated on me, though. The singing seemed to me to be constantly out of tune and tried to go beyond range. The lyrics and composition were infantile.

My advice: Listen to the samples. If they're definitely your style, purchase the CD. Otherwise, save your dimes.

5 out of 5 stars Do not wait to buy this tremendous Cd!.......1999-10-23

This disc is one of the permanent fixtures on my Cd player at home. It is a perfect introduction to Braxton's always illuminating solo music. It seems (and I use "seems" rather than "is," because it is just my opinion) to be more carefully planned than his early "For Alto"; it is delicate, improvised, and yet structured...it is very hard to put into words. But then again, that in itself is why you should experience the music on this wonderful Cd--in his music, Braxton has always reached aesthetic places that only the masters can reach, and language often doesn't do justice to the task. All I can say is that in my opinion (which is always subjective, of course) this Cd is the perfect thing to listen to when you are having your cup of coffee and reading the Sunday paper, enjoying an evening dinner with family and friends, or, in particular, when you just want to sit down and concentrate hard on the music of one of the finest modern day composers in creative music. This music will reward you in ways that are authentic, genuine, and (most importantly) PERMANENT.

            Album Description

LAND OF THE BLIND out of Portland, Oregon & San Francisco is a band that creates different musical worlds for eclectic wanderers. "Tribal-Trance" is what they call it but this album weaves a magic carpet ride of Middle-eastern, Tribal, Native, Celtic, ambient rock and ethnic folk that bi-passes genre' and defies catagories.

Lead singer Cyoakha's honeyed vocals are poured over the music like mollasses, moving from Kate Bush-like howls to soft dreamy trance vocals & Middle-Eastern/Indian weavings. The entire band supports this movement from strong to dreamy.

ORDINARY MAGIC starts off with the Burning Man theme song, TRIBE, a cool anti-consumer native groove and moves right into the song Cyoakha Grace wrote for Julia Butterfly (when she was living in Luna), called CHURCH OF THE HOLY TREES, a dreamy middle-eastern ectopolitical statement. (Blind gives half of all sales of this song to EarthFirst) You can also hear CHURCH in the soundtrack of the new movie about Julia called "TREESIT". You'll still be dancing by the third cut, a wonderful Celtic romp with Cocteau Twins-like vocals called TRUST. The album slows down and drops into dreamy with MARY'S HANDS, and adds an ambient feel in this sweet ballad. MOTHER is an Irish dirge, semi-traditional but with a twist only the Blind can provide. ELIZA is a fun pop song, light, with a great Native American flute powering it out, as well as driving bass. A LITTLE MORE adds a Tom Waitish touch of techno, a mad trash can feel, yet with beautiful vocals. THE WITCHES OF KILKENNY is another Celtic piece but only as the Blind can do it, moving from an Irish tale into a driving bass and flute piece and ending with a group Om into JOURNEY'S END, their semi-cover of a very famous 60's band, something you won't forget as you drift away awash in keys, sitar and mediaeval bass lines, with Cyoakha's vocals dropping in from everywhere.

This CD is a journey like no other. If you like Kate Bush, Cocteau Twins, Tori Amos, The Doors, Sky Cries Mary, Mouth Music, Dead Can Dance, you will enjoy this cd!

5 out of 5 stars Ordinary Magic - Land of the Blind at it's best.......2001-10-17

OM is another brilliant outing from The Blind. Strong musicianship and songwriting abounds. As you would expect from them, OM has a very cool mix of tribal, trance, psychedelia, beautiful ballads and Eastern modal music. The Blind have always had this interesting mix of styles. OM is probably their most mature work to date. OM starts out with the passionate and trance-like "Tribe". "Mother" is a gorgeous elegy. Melo's flute and Krystov's dulcimer are so beautiful in accompanying Cyoakha's lovingly bittersweet lyrics and voice. "Witches of Kilkenny" builds to a ritualistic fever pitch. You can just picture the passionate dancing around the ever-growing flames of the ritual bonfire. The CD ends with a unique take on "The End". The Blind's version mixes the feel of an Indian raga and psychedelic space chanting ala Gilli Smyth of Gong. I highly recommend this CD.

            5 out of 5 stars Ordinary Magic.......2001-10-16

Finally got Land of the Blind's latest work "Ordinary Magic" after a long
            wait.
Well two things, it's worth the wait and it's a lot more than "Ordinary".
When I started to write this, I asked myself how would you describe this
            music to someone? I realized I didn't have a clue. I hear other people's
description and I guess the word tribal or trance connects in a muddied way.
The subject matter is diverse, sometimes dark, sometimes light and
uplifting. "Church Of The Holy Trees" a song written for Julia Butterfly is
a spiritual chant celebrating the holiness and sacredness of those
magnificent creatures that bless our existence. I'm so thankful for this
song and it's reminder of the work so many dedicated people all over the
world are doing to heighten our awareness of the sacredness of all species
threatened or not on our planet.
I'm not sure what "Eliza" is about but musically it tingles many of my soft
spots, melody, vaguely Eastern undercurrent, and mystery. "Mary's Hands" and
"A Little More (Monster)" are similar in how they tweak my musical hot
buttons, but are totally different musically and in every other aspect.
"Witches Of Kilkenny" find another weak spot in my armor, this time the
Celtic hole. Now, I understand the chill I felt in my heart as I spied
Kilkenny from a high tower over looking the town...witches, yes.
The last cut "Journey's End" is about 10 minutes long with a Eastern Indian
feel and something eerily familiar. I didn't get the connection until about
6 minutes into the song and recognized the "Doors" famous "The End" song. I
was really impressed by that Doors song when I first heard it, but only now
thanks to the Blind I see it in a very new and unusual light. Great job!
