Mary Martin created Broadway's most famous "trousers" role in the original 1954 cast of Peter Pan, but former Olympic gymnast Cathy Rigby has proven to be a worthy successor. She earned a Tony nomination for the 1991 revival, has toured extensively, and starred in the 2000 video production. While the classic J.M. Barrie story of the boy who wouldn't grow up has seen many musical treatments (including Leonard Bernstein in 1950 and Disney in 1953), this version is probably the best known, with such Moose Charlap-Carolyn Leigh songs as "I Gotta Crow," "Tender Shepherd," "I'm Flying," and "I Won't Grow Up," plus some additional material by Jule Styne and Betty Comden and Adolph Green (most notably "Neverland"). My daughter is playing Wendy in a community youth theater production of Peter Pan. She has been singing along with the CD ever since we received it in the mail. Wonderful sound quality.

Great revival to the Original .......2005-03-14

Ever since I saw Cathy Rigby play Peter Pan in the 1997 production I was like Holy crap she plays this role very well!
The production on this CD is very well done! Unlike Mary Martin's CD! Mary Martin's CD is the worst Peter Pan CD I've ever heard! Cathy Rigby on the other hand she beats Mary Martin's production by a huge landslide! They also add parts of the play into the CD which makes the CD even more exciting! I saw Cathy Rigby on her final tour of Peter Pan and she was so amazing! Cathy Rigby Rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This 1997 studio cast album of PETER PAN is a fine testament to this magical musical. Cathy Rigby, star of various Broadway runs and national tours of the show, gives thrilling voice to the title character, and is joined by a first-rate supporting cast.

Paul Schoeffler, also a veteran of the Broadway/national tour, is a great Captain Hook, especially during "Hook's Waltz" and "Hook's Tango". Traditionally, he also portrays the bombastic Mr Darling.

Elisa Sagardia is, like Rigby and Schoeffler, reprising her role of Wendy from the Broadway/national tour. She gives a lovely weight to "Tender Shepherd" and "Distant Melody". She also has a great voice.

Rounding out the cast are Susan Lamontagne as Tiger Lily, Lee Honey-Jones as John, Myles Anderson as Michael, Helen Hobson as Mrs Darling, Anne McVey as Liza, Susan Dale as Jane, Julian Forsythe as Smee and Jenny Agutter as the Narrator. [CDJAY 1280]

A great revival.......2000-12-31

Forty some ye3ars ago I saw Peter Pan on its premier performance on television. I bought the record with Mary Martin and I have loved it. I have to say that the Cathy Rigby recording is even better. Cathy beings a youthful presence in her songs. The recording itself is technologically better. The recording includes bits from the play not on the original. And the whole recoding seems to have a life the original does not have. "I'm Flying" is exhilerating. "Once Upon a Time Long Ago" has a more haunting ache. The timing of the songs is different, but not worse than the original. Ms. Rigby is not trying to copy Ms. Martin. Which means for Peter Pan lovers there are two distinctive performances to appreciate. I wish I could see Ms. Rigby on stage. I saw Sandy Duncan some years ago and she was good. This is a great recording.

As did the Lewis Carroll/Alice in Wonderland-rooted Dreamchild before it, Finding Neverlandexplores the all-too-human roots of an English children' s literature classic, in this case author James Mathew Barrie's (Johnny Depp) enduring fable, Peter Pan. Polish stage composer cum film scorer Jan A. P. Kaczmarek takes the film's fantasy-leavened, yet ultimately bittersweet tale of Barrie, his losing battle with adulthood and the magic world of prose it inspired and invests it with an exuberant score that positively pulses with youthful abandon. Dominated by joyous writing for strings, winds and children's chorus and punctuated by the effervescent solo piano flourishes of Leszek Mozdzer (and a few other inviting ethnic conceits), the composer's music not only playfully vamps the tale's Edwardian era, but does it with an ear towards optimistic, youthful energy that's irresistible. i love the quality of all the songs on this soundtrack, but some just don't always fit into day-to-day listening due to their classical nature. still they are all very moving. I LOVE the NEVERLAND THEME, i consider it the most moving piece of music i can remember listening to...

Never really heard of the composer but he has composed some beautiful music! Finding Neverland is a very magical score, and is a treat to listen to! It has almost everything in it from... powerful piano solos, to peaceful, serene cues from a live orchestra, great vocal talents by the boy's choir, and even a "waltzy" (is that a word?) Italian feel to it!

Overall, great classic music.... and it will like many other soundtracks be included on my "Favorites" list!

Recommend it to anyone!! If you own it then... well... enjoy!!

Great Sampling Collection.......2007-07-29

Over the past thirty years, my father and I have been collecting film music on various formats--vinyl, tape, reel-to-reel, CD, recording it from the movie, even. This collection is a great starter for someone who wants to start owning movie music. Lots of big hitters, including Hermann, Barry, Conti, Mancini, and Goldsmith as well as some contemporary scores that are great, too. This is the type of collection I would make for a friend who asks "what scores should I start with?"

Six Decades of Film Music.......2007-05-13

This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.

Excellent collection with fine performances.......2007-03-28

Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). Listings seem to have them reversed.

When I think of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "The Incredible Film Music Box", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades from 1939 through and up to the present 2004

There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!

Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.

Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

Peter Pan's, finally may grow up but Cathy Rigby's voice may never grow old..........2006-01-09

I just recently saw Cathy Rigby in NYC at MSG, (Madison Square Garden) just right before Christmas, she did great as always. Cathy sounded the way she always has and will. This soundtrack has all the same songs with in her last tour. I happened to like this version better then Marry Martains because it just brings out the story better and you can see the stage light up in your mind so well, that it just brings back childhood memories for adults and kids. I also met Cathy Rigby, when I was little, and I met her again for a second last time at MSG. she still looks great for her age. As long as you have this CD, you will be able to go back to NeverLand anytime you want. This is her final year for good. Then she will retire and hang up her tights for her last curtain call. I just hope she finds the right person to continue her Peter Pan legacy. Maybe a boy's voice as peter pan would maybe be in the making for a new soundtrack , thats if it ever happens lol... So don't pass this by because Cathy Rigby will let your heart fly. As you listen to this Magical Soundtrack you will want to soar into the night sky. This is the best since Peter Pan begain at the Winter Garden theartre. Now that the tour is almost over, get this now before its gone!... Good luck to the rest of the Peter Pan Gang, on a job well done, Steve...

I grew up watching Mary Martin play Peter Pan, and was quite used to it by the time I was 14. Then, I saw Cathy Rigby in "Peter Pan" on A&E one night (my mom made us watch!). It was a breathtaking expreiance for me. I started watching the DVD of the production over and over, until I fell absolutly in love with Peter, Wendy, Captain Hook, Tiger Lily and the others. In 2004, my mom took me and my sister to see Cathy Rigby's final tour in Los Angeles on closing night. We bought the soundtrack to the 1997 soundtrack then. I have listened to it many times,and I still love it. Now, the 2000 version is out and I have listened to that as well. I never get old of listening to Cathy Rigby, and Elisa Sagardia's voices. I highly reccomend this soundtrack to any Peter Pan fan!!

Love Peter Pan!.......2003-12-24

Ever since I was really little I have always loved Peter Pan! Then I learned there were more versions than just the Disney Version! I found this one and fell in love with it. The CD really captures the songs and the energy that the movie projected! I am now trying to find a copy of the movie so i can enjoy it again. I am only seventeen but wish that I could go off to neverland and join peter pan and the lost boys in thier adventures.

Hard to review two classics at the same time.......2006-01-29

I got Alice in Hell and Never Neverland almost 17 years ago and they got lost somewhere when I moved back many years ago.

I was always more a fan of Never Neverland because I think the compositions and production are a level higher than Alice.

But for Alice. What a classic. There are some mad shredding riffs in there. As a guitarist, Waters has always been some kind of inspiration even today.

I think the vocals on Alice in Hell are more rough and draft than Never Neverland but that's just me. Buy it even if it's just for the songs Crystal Ann and Alice in Hell.

Excellent old school trash metal

The Best Deal in Metal.......2005-11-23

It is no longer necessary to search eBay and countless music stores to obtain the classic first two Annihilators. In order to make the might of Annihilator known to the masses, Roadrunner has rereleased both of them together and thus created the best metal package available for half the price.

The first album, Alice in Hell, is gritty and raw. The fires of pure thrash are here, furious speed, amazing solos, with plenty of diversity. A wicked flamenco intro, several odd time signatures, and a few brief clean interludes make for a dark and heavy album.

The second album, Never Neverland, provides a more well rounded album. Coburn Pharr, vocalist on this album, provides a clear powerful voice, even if he doesn't have the might and prescence of Randy Rampage(from the first album). Neverland is just as fast and powerful as the first with more melodic sections as well as slightly more mature lyricism.

The fact that these albums are being sold together for the price of one is more than enough incentive to buy them.

All I am going to say is that these two albums are good and the only good albums by Annihilator.You have two different singers on these albums,Alice In Hell(Randy Rampage),Never,Neverland(Coburn Pharr)there both good at singing.All the songs rule besides the song Stonewall off of Never,Neverland.If you like speed metal buy these two albums or buy them on one like this one is.

THRASH METAL BEST ALBUMS - PERIOD!.......2005-01-29

How can people prefer Metallica, Megadeth or Slayer instead of Annihilator is something unclear to me and really makes me sad.How can't the world value the talent of Jeff Waters?
Well, if you are into thrash metal or virtuosic guitars but done with originality and memorable riffs and awe inspiring and breathtaking changes in tempos, it doesn't get better than Annihilator.Some may argue about Set The World On Fire being too much pop-metal oriented or that the voice of Jeff diminished the power in such gems as King Of The Kill or Remains (all albums post - Never, Neverland)but the intense glow with sheer perfection of this two first Annihilator jewel albums can not be touched!
The fact that Roadrunner gives this two to you, the elusive buying public, at the price of one album and remastered both of them plus bonus tracks is mind - blowing!

2 gems for the price of one...........2005-01-24

With all the talk of 80's thrash classics and arrows pointing to such illuminaries as Slayer, Megadeth, Metallica and others, there is one album that seemingly gets forgetten and may be one of the most enjoyable of all: Annihilator's Alice In Hell. Though the album was purportedly recorded as a demo, the stellar guitar sound and absolute speed frenzy of Jeff Waters' excellent guitar ability make this a fist pumping thrash dynamo. Nearly every song here is top notch, with highlights being "Alison Hell", "Human Insecticide" (one of the fastest songs I can think of as the guitar retains such clarity in the accelerated playing), "Burns like a Buzz Saw Blade" and "W.T.Y.D." Waters has an uncanny ability to create guitar rhythms that carry songs immensely well and also immediately give Annihilator a singular, unique sound. Sure, Randy Rampage (who lasted through this album and the tour afterwards) isn't exactly what I would call a dynamic vocalist, but his sneering growls are perfect for the album. If, for some odd reason, you like thrash and don't have this in your collection, you will most certainly join Alice.

Annihilator's second album featuring new singer Coburn Pharr something of a dual headed dragon. The first half was absolutely top notch throughout while the second side nearly disemboweled itself on weak songs and joke tracks that would have been more at home on a Descendents record ("Kraf Dinner"). Though I just said that, I still catch myself smiling at its lyrics every once-in-a-while. Nevertheless, Never, Neverland featured remarkably stylish production from Glen Robinson and again showcased guitarist Jeff Waters' sparkling ability. As songs like "The Fun Palace", "Stonewall" and the title track all aptly demonstrate, his sense of rhythm and grand control over picking patterns should have placed him amongst the thrash elite of the time. For the songs that clicked, his style is simply phenomenal and even on the weaker songs, he still plays better than most. I think the biggest problem Never, Neverland (and perhaps Annihilator as a whole) suffered from was the lack of a true band feeling. Coburn Pharr is a capable singer and much more talented than his predecessor, Randy Rampage, but Rampage had a bigger presence overall. Pharr sounded more like the hired hand than a singer giving his heart and soul to the band. Yet, even with all its flaws, Never, Neverland is a great record that really deserved more attention than it ultimately received.

Both of these albums are gems in the thrash metal genre and we all can graciously thank Roadrunner records for re-releasing these tems together for the price of one.

A solid comeback by the original line up!.......2003-04-07

"Neverland" from 1997 can be regarded as the original line up's comeback album. And Night Ranger is without doubt in need of their musical core Jack Blades, who were absent on the bands previous album "Feeding off the mojo" from 1995. Some might have too high expectations on this release and thinking that the reunion would add a reborn enthusiasm. But this effort is like many other Night Ranger albums - it has great as well as average songs, and although it's not a bad album, it's neither top class.

Unexpected, this release sets off with a semi ballad "Forever all over again", which perhaps also is the album's strongest tune. Old fans of Night Ranger will immediately recognize the melodic vein that's characteristic for Blades' song writing. The following track "Neverland" is an up tempo catchy song and clearly one of the better ones. Then comes a line of average Night Ranger songs - not better or worse than you're used to when it comes to this band.

I would say that this is a solid effort from a talented band that stick to their melodic approach. All of Night Ranger's albums are worth having, and I suggest you start with their debut "Dawn patrol" from 1982 - perhaps their finest ever!

IF you're trying to decide on which new release to buy from these guys choose this one over seven. Even though this band has never done anything even mediocre this one shines!! I even think 'feeding off the mojo' is wonderful!!

I was excited back in 1997 when I heard that the original Night Ranger lineup was getting back together and putting out new material. After 10 years between albums with this lineup (remember--the keyboardist Alan Fitgerald wasn't with them for 1988's awesome "Man In Motion" and only two of them were on 1995's very good "Feeding Off The Mojo"), I was happy to see that the band hadn't lost their touch. Sure the sound is a bit more mellow and modern, but for the times it is still very good.

"Forever All Over Again" is the opening track and only single I heard on radio at all off this album (and very briefly). For sure, it is a surprise to have a ballad like this open up the album, but it is a very nice track. Then at track 2 comes the rocking title track. Good stuff--the band clearly showed it may still have its edge here. But the first time I heard this album I got concerned with the pace upon hearing tracks 3 and 4. "As Always I Remain" and "Someday I Will", while both also very solid tracks, are quite acoustic and mellow in nature. Had the hard rock left this band?

Well, after only 1 rocker in the first 4 tracks, I would call 5 of the final 7 tracks solid rockers. "New York Time" is a solid rock track that brings back memories of the '80s version of the band. "Walk In The Future" has a slightly modern sound but is pretty mellow and a bit reminiscent of Shaw/Blades. "Slap Like Being Born" is also a bit modern in tone but a surefire rocker with an interesting sound and lyric. At track 10, "Anything For You" looks like it's positioned to be a ballad due to the name of the song and placement on the album, but it in fact is one of the hardest rockers on the album--great track. Right after that comes the closing track "I Don't Call This Love", another surefire quality rocker.

I can't honestly state that this album is quite as good as the vintage 1980s material, but it sure is more than worth the listen if you are or were a fan of this band. The sound is a bit updated and a bit more mellow but overall true to the roots and history of the band. Worth the purchase, for sure, if you are craving new material from a favorite '80s melodic hard rock band.

Album Stashed Way Back In My Collection.......2006-08-12

I have to say of all the hard rock/glam albums I own this one still holds up like it was made yesterday. I was listening to it last night and was glad I owned this album. All of the songs are great melodic, catchy tunes and I think the songs could stand up today against anything out there. A very ahead of its time album. Do yourself a favor and find this gem, used or in a pawn shop it doesn't matter you will be greatly satisfied with Neverland "Neverland".

this is an excellent group, i dont know how come this band vnever got the honor they deserve, excellent songs, excellent vocals and lyrics, it reminds me of a grup i saw in London called GUN, only neverland is better, more heavier and not so pop rock like gun, NEVERLAND kicks ass, this band in the 80's or the 90's could kick any ass, like guns n posers or bon jovi or winger, any sleaze group that didnt deserve the fame that they use to have. A melodic rock treasure.......2003-11-05

It's a shame this band never caught on. Their brand of AOR/melodic rock should have gone over quite well when this album was released in 1991, but for some reason it just didn't catch hold. Neverland, despite their appearance, was not a hair metal band, but a melodic rock band similar to bands like Journey, Bad English, and Tyketto. Their self-titled debut album is a near-flawless collection of upbeat rockers and memorable ballads, all written by the band members. The lyrics are your basic love song material, but they seem to be a bit more personal and emotional than what most other bands from this era produced. It's an excellent album from start to finish, with great melodies, better than average lyrics, superb musicianship, and captivating vocals. Song highlights include Running On, Mama Said, and Drinking Again (which was featured on the Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey soundtrack). This is a must-have for any AOR/melodic rock fan, and should appeal to anyone who enjoys upbeat rock music.

A Must if Stranded on a Remote Island!!!.......2003-07-24

This band first got my attention with their song "Drinking Again" that was featured on the soundtrack to "Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey." After hearing that ONE song, I bought their debute, self-titled CD. Let me just tell you; I have a rather extensive CD collection of many artists and many differing styles of music, and this Neverland CD is one of my absolute favorites! It is very sad to me that this talented group of performers never climbed the ladder of success. I remain today, a true Neverland fan!!!

Great Album!!.......2003-07-16

I found this CD at a Wall (Franklin Mills, PA) that was selling off CD's at a few bucks each. I was kind of skeptical at first, but figured why not, it was cheap. After playing it, I was surprised to find that it was a kickin' CD. These guys really do rock. I am shocked that they disappeared off the music scene. I'd recommend this one to anyone who likes 80's rock with an energizing spin.

Brilliant recording that stands the test of time. .......2007-06-17

Simply put, I believe Neverland was Suzanne Ciani's best overall recording. Released in 1988 during the peak of the synthesizer explosion of instrumental music of the mid to late 80's this ranks right along with any recording of that time and is better than most. That was, to me, a wonderful era of music, call it new age, contemporary instrumental, adult alternative, progressive electronic, or exactly whatever style or genre that was, there was some truly beautiful and innovative music being created at the time. Suzanne was right there among the best artists.

Most of the songs on this ten-song recording were melodic, emotionally deep, innovative, complex, and beautifully structured electronic music. There were varying tempo's, with the title track and Life In the Moonlight being energetic and up tempo rhythms and others such as Tuscany and When Love Dies more moderate. I sincerely believe Aegean Wave is the masterpiece of the CD, a beautifully woven layered composition brilliantly displaying the rich, lush sounds of the keyboards available at the time. To me, this song could be signature song of the entire era. Two tracks differ distinctly from this pattern. Mosaic is an interesting tune, and a good one, but to me sounds more like a track from Ray Lynch's No Blue Thing than the rest of Neverland. The only true disappointment to me is the final track Lumiere. This is an example of that droning sound, with some no word vocals added in, that so many artists made a living of best known as ambient. There was no real tune or melody at all and to me it didn't fit with the rest of the CD. This was not the Ciani style, before or since, and happily she didn't go there again to my knowledge. But while it doesn't stand up to the rest of the CD it doesn't diminish it in any real way as the other tracks are so strong they more than make up for this one lesser effort.

I believe this music is still worth listening to today. I believe it's just as timeless and valid as music recorded with acoustic instruments and doesn't fall victim to the infamous "dated" label some seem to want to put on music from the past. All anyone can do whenever they record something is use the most modern and up to date technology available at the time. It's the beauty and spirit of the music that makes it last and therefore timeless. Neverland succeeds at that. As Suzanne herself stated in the liner notes of Velocity of Love she believes "hi-tech electronic instruments could speak softly, sensually, with feminine curves and emotions, and that I could find a way to share my sense of classical beauty with the world". She succeeded at that on both Velocity and Neverland. Whatever feminine curves brought to or resulted by her music, I am living proof men can still enjoy it. It's my hope someday, even now basically 20 years later, she will move that direction again as opposed to continuing in her trend now of so many years of piano and ensemble. She does that well too, but her strength has always been in electronics. I hope someday her muse will lead her more back in that direction.

New age by definition.......2004-05-31

There is no better way to describe what New Age is than listening to this outstanding recording. Not only is the pure essence of New Age: I'm talking about real quality, inspiration and soul.

For those who think this music is over-programmed, Ciani has that latin sense that makes her music pure, lively, fresh and with the touch of innocence of her first recordings.

I will mention Tuscany as one of my favourite songs of all music I've ever heard: melancholic is the word.

Neverland together with Hotel Luna are the best way to introduce to this artist and to this genre which had no equal in late 80's and first 90's.

One of new age's best!.......1999-05-12

This is one album that I think is underrated. First off, it's one of the best modern instrumental albums I've owned. It's also one of the few "electronic" albums that doesn't sound mechanical. This is probably because Ms. Ciani is a real musician (graduated from Julliard School of Music, I heard). The most ironic thing, though, is that most (if not, all) of the instruments used in this album are synthesizers, even though some instruments sound "acoustic and real". The album is also composed, arranged, performed and produced by Suzanne Ciani. This album WILL take you to NEVERLAND!

Cindy Bullens's 1999 release, Somewhere Between Heaven and Earth, is an exceptional ode to her late daughter (who died at age 11) that does what great art should do: turn the passionately personal into the universal. Neverland is a transitional work that references the tragedy (in the title song and "Right Kind of Goodbye") while moving on to other subjects. John Hiatt joins her for "Hammer and Nails," about the work that must accompany the passion, while "Sensible Shoes" references rocker Bullens's refusal to conform to expectations. She even finds time to have fun with a sexy blues ("Baby I Want Your Love"). Steve Earle's twang-trust partner Ray Kennedy helps provide the perfect guitar-driven setting for the singer's pipes (Earle himself lends a vocal hand on the title tune), helping Bullens in the quest to move on with her life--at the same time enriching ours. --Michael Ross

Perfection........2002-02-26

"Neverland" is one of the best albums to come along in recent memory. I just saw Cindy perform solo on 2/23 at the Kennebunk (ME) Coffeehouse and she completely amazed the audience with an inspiring, rocking, deeply personal, and touching performance. I highly recommend this album and encourage everyone to check-out one of her live performances. Personal favorites on this disc include "Cry to You," the emotional "The Right Kind of Goodbye," "Send Me an Angel," with Emmylou Harris on backing vocals, and the rocking "Sensible Shoes."

Following Up a Masterpiece With a Visit To "Neverland!".......2002-01-01

Cindy Bullens must have faced a daunting task when she entered the studio earlier this year....she somehow needed to come up with a new CD that would match, or even top, 1999's SOMEWHERE BETWEEN HEAVEN AND EARTH, the poignant and thoughtful ode about the death of her eleven year old daughter that many considered the creative and critical highpoint of Cindy's quarter-century career. What's a singer-songwriter to do?!? Well, in Cindy's case, obviously, not worry.....with NEVERLAND she has come up with a release that is every bit as good, if not better, than SOMEWHERE BETWEEN HEAVEN & EARTH. Full of smart lyrics that acknowledge the past, live in the present and look forward to the future, and music that rocks on so many different levels, NEVERLAND combines rock, blues and country with lots of sly, smart, sexy attitude. The result? Sheer perfection! The disc opens with the title track, a cautionary tale about getting lost in the past. Steve Earle's sinewy backing vocals add a nice punch to this delicate tune that tugs on your heartstrings while at the same time warns you against falling into the abyss of past thoughts and moments of long ago. Next up is "Long Way Down (I Liked Falling)". A hushed tale of new found love, this is one of those universal songs that everyone can identify with. Building in intensity as it proceeds, the song ends with a gut-wrenching flourish......just like many of our "perfect love affairs." "Cry To You" is a brilliant rocker, mixing mandolin, solid drumming and twangy guitars in fine form. The same can be said about "Hammer & Nails." This is Cindy at her rockin' best. From the grinding guitars to her shouted "Awright, now!" that would have been at home on 1978's DESIRE WIRE, this track represents all the things that are best about Cindy's career (special mention needs to be made about John Hiatt's growling harmony vocals; they are, without a doubt, better than any lead vocal off of his recent THE TIKI BAR IS OPEN CD). Things downshift with "The Right Kind Of Goodbye", a sweet, folk-based number that could be as much about saying goodbye to a lover as it could be about a lost child (the harmonica just makes the song!). Next up are "Send Me An Angel" and "Drivin' My Heart Around", a pair of tracks Cindy has recut from her 1994 WHY NOT? EP. "Send Me An Angel" is now a tad bit more world-weary but, in it's weariness, twice as haunting and angelic (how could it not be, whatwith Emmylou Harris' gorgeous backing vocals?), while "Drivin' My Heart Around" has acquired a new edginess and intensity. From here, things get kicked up another notch or five. "Baby I Want Your Love" is Cindy's most sensual track to date.....all growling, throaty, almost-spoken vocal, swamp boogie guitar and pounding percussion, this is what rock was always meant to be.....hot, sweaty and nasty! It's at this point that you realize NEVERLAND's genius: only a CD of this quality could segue to a totally different sound and make it sound right. That's what happens here with "Gravity and Grace", the CD's most poignant track. I won't attempt to presume too much about this song, but I think it has a lot to do with the light and darkness we each have inside of us. Featuring some stunning lyrics ("Gravity's so grumpy/He brings everybody down/My friend Grace on the other hand/She's the sweetest girl in town/Gravity I battle with/And he always makes me cry/I can't seem to win a fight/No matter how I try/Grace looks through the window/Waiting for a sign/When I've had enough of Gravity/She will find her way inside/But I have my suspicions/That I've harbored for awhile/When they pass each other in my life/I swear I see them smile") and a gorgeous lead vocal, this is singing and songwriting at it's best! Next up is NEVERLAND's best track, the rocking "Sensible Shoes." Dripping in attitude, you can just picture Cindy jamming with this baby, be it in a small club or in an arena, opening for the Rolling Stones (a group who's influence is all over this track!). Brilliant! NEVERLAND closes with "One Single Moment", a piano-driven ballad that is notable for it's simplicity, honesty and, ultimately, beauty. So......do yourself a favor and pick up NEVERLAND......it is, without a doubt, a highpoint in Cindy Bullens' career, and a true contender for 2001's Album of the Year.

Moving second chapter of Bullens' loss and recovery.......2001-12-12

Bullens' recording career is like a bamboo plant, gathering material in private, and sprouting in the public eye only when ready. Her latest release, the second half of a pair initiated after a decade of public inactivity, finds continued inspiration from the untimely death of her young daughter in 1996. As on 1999's "Somewhere Between Heaven & Earth," Bullens explores the overwhelming mass of conflicting emotions a parent feels upon the loss of a child. And with two more years of healing, she finds further expression of understanding and inner strength.

The title track is a tremendous amalgam of loss, longing, sorrow, anger, helplessness, fatalism, and a thousand-and-one emotions in between. All rendered without a hint of bitterness, nor the sort of mawkish sentimentality one finds in much of today's pop music. This is the outpouring of a true rock 'n' roll heart whose scars may have temporarily slowed its beating, but in the end, have built new strength. "The Right Kind of Goodbye" illuminates how the lingering pain of separation can lead one to healing, and "Cry to You" shows how loss sharpens focus on the here and now. Throughout, Bullens' loss serves as personal motivation for songs that will find broad resonance with listeners.

Bullens and co-producer Ray Kennedy (Steve Earle, Jack Ingram) have loaded this album with vintage rock 'n' roll guitars, bass and drums, but tempered them with the occasional mandolin, acoustic guitar or sweet background harmony. The result has the energy of 60s and 70s rock, without toting the nostalgic baggage. From the drowsy balladry of "Long Way Down (I Liked Falling)" and "Send Me an Angel" to the Stones-inflected guitars of "Sensible Shoes" and Southern Rock sounds of "Hammer and Nails" to the sexuality-laced blues of "Baby I Want Your Love" there isn't a calculated or false moment to be found on this album.

A Legend that no one remembers.......2001-10-23

Cindy Bullens is one of the first women of true rock and roll. She made it big and suddenly slipped out of the biz for some time to have two beautiful children. Cindy made a heart warming yet all to tragic return to her unparelleled talent, music. After Jessie, her youngest daughter died, Cindy used her music to help and heal herself and others, and she did, beautifully. Now she is rippin' it up with a new album that is a mix of killer rifts, touching lyrics, and beats that are classic, smooth, and all around rock n' roll. Her daughter Reid also joins her again on this album and her harmonys are right on, Reid, we're waiting for an album of your own! So Cindy Bullens' Neverland = BEST ALBUM OF THE YEAR!

Rock and Roll At Its Best.......2001-10-13

Cindy Bullens once again shows us that it is possible to be a sensitive, articulate songwriter and at the same time a classic rock and roll singer. These songs range from heart-thumping to sultry to tender. It gets my vote for best rock album of the year. A definite must buy!
