Abbath shows he's STILL got it!.......2007-05-31
Except for the absence of crazy fast blastbeat-type drumming, this very well could have been a new Immortal album. The vocals are vintage Abbath, as are the lyrics, but there's less trem-picking and blasting on the drums, so I'm guessing he didn't want to "dilute" the legendary(and deservedly so) Immortal legacy. No worries - this album kicks major ***!
My favorite song is "Warriors" - hands down. And horns up! Abbath shows he is still relevant in the metal genre - so listen up, you young guns - Abbath ain't done yet!
An interesting twist........2007-04-16
Yes! Yes! This rocks!.......2007-03-25
Most of the songs here are composed of only a single riff, but don't let that give you the wrong impression -- the songs never become overly repetitive or stale. "Between Two Worlds" features some of the hookiest, most well-constructed, and best guitar licks put to wax by any band in 2006. They are super groovey, meaty, contagious, heavy yet simultaneously melodic, and they build off of each other and flow together remarkably well. Then, to make an already good album even better, the band add controlled and usually melodic guitar solos (which are reminiscent of Iron Maiden and Megadeth), thumping drum beats, prominent bass lines, and occasional melodic vocals to offset Abbath's signature, throaty black metal croak.
The album shoots out of the starting gate with an ultra-catchy and oh-so-Motorhead-esque tune by the name of "The Storm I Ride." Abbath does his best Lemmy impersonation over a strong, propulsive riff that will have listeners everywhere tapping their feet in rhythm, and a tasty clean solo near the end is the icing on this song's cake. "Warriors" is a significantly slower tune that is more in line with classical metal and boasts two stellar solos (the first of which is almost beautiful.) Next, the title cut is a superbly rhythmic (albeit overlong) number, and is backed by a catchy, galloping rhythm and a ripping, ascending solo. Then, after that, we are treated to the positively blistering "Battalions," which is filled with rocketing tempos, crunchy thrash riffs, and beeping bass notes. "Mountains" is another catchy rocker, and is highlighted by a jaw-droppingly great guitar solo (the album's best!). Moving along, "Days Of North Winds," has more strong, chug and churn riffs and a blazing solo; "Far Beyond The Quiet," is a very open and majestic-sounding piece with effective tempo changes, nice melodic leads, wailing solos, and grumbling bass notes; and lastly, "Cursed We Are," the record's thrashiest track, is fueled by double-kick drums and gobs of fiery, breakneck riffing.
"Between Two Worlds" is far different than anything Immortal ever put out, so it may take some getting used to if you are a longtime fan of that band and expecting this album to continue in that vein. But even though it may not be the follow-up to "Sons of Northern Darkness" that you were expecting, there is still a lot to enjoy here. If you like music with an abundance of gripping, headbanging riffs, excellent solos, melodic hooks, infectious grooves, and memorable songs, you are sure to agree.
These guys know what their doing!!.......2007-01-19
METAL ALBUM OF THE YEAR 2006.......2007-01-19
Some are saying it's not IMMORTAL. Those IMMORTAL ripsaw power chords are there. Only they sound more mainstream. And the growling dark winter vocals and lyrics are there. It sounds like IMMORTAL to me. But, with a more straight ahead feel to the Metal. I think maybe Abbath is looking for a more commercial appeal to his sound. Black Metal is basically a fringe audience. When you can play this good, who wouldn't want to appeal to a bigger audience? It works for me in a big way. I love IMMORTAL. They're my second favorite Black Metal band next to EMPEROR. But, I love the direction Abbath is taking with this music. This is the best solid straight up Metal album I've heard in a long time. And I hope there's going to be more.
IMMORTAL lyrics and vocals, yes. BATHORY songs, yes.
MOTORHEAD? No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
I don't get the MOTORHEAD comparison. I love MOTORHEAD, but the only track that sounds even vaguely like MOTORHEAD is maybe THE STORM I RIDE. Maybe.

A wonderful album!.......2004-10-06
Rainmaker is a very haunting song with an intense misty atmosphere with some ceramic percussion. Sky Juice is a breathtaking song with very electronic synths and some jet sound effects with some thumping beats and a cool bass. However that is nothing like the next one. Cape Perpetual is beyond any word I can describe about this song. It's a very spooky track. It starts of with some strange breezy wind instruments and some thundering sounds in the distance. At about 30 seconds there are some synthesizer hums that fade in. The sound of the synth humming almost scared me at first listening. It then becomes a dark very space oriented song with ceramic percussion and thundering jet sound effects. I could close my eyes listening to this song and imagine myself traveling on the Orient Express through oriental space. This song alone makes this album a five star. Gentle Was The Night is a very beautiful song with just mostly synths. This is a great song. Fire Ritual is a very pop oriented song and some vocal doodling here and there. This is probably the brightest song on here. 87 Dreams Of A Lifetime lives up to the title. This is a very stunning and could rank as one of his best 80s tracks ever. It starts with just some ambient synths and the synths get louder and at about a minute into the song the real music begins. This is a haunting song with a catchy rhythm and a space jazzy stmosphere. This is my second favorite off this album. Dimension D is a very space oriented song with some haunting sound effects and a very dark ambient atmosphere. Forever The Optimistic is a pop oriented song with great electronic bass, a great hook and some synth tinklings throughout the song. I almost cryed when I first heard this song and today I consider this song a new age classic. Journey To Yoroba is another haunting song. It has lots of ceramic percussion and ambient synths. I love the drum loop to this song. The closing title track is great with more great synths and cool drums.
All in all I rank this album as one Mr. O'Hearns strongest masterpieces to date.
It's hard to really say how much I love this album because it really stimulates imagination in a way that none of his other albums can.
In fact this album for a time is almost like the soundtrack my high school years because it reflects lonely I feel sometimes. In fact I strongly recommend this album to all who love music to listen to while thinking. It's very intelligent music that should be enjoyed by all generations.
Well that's all I can say.
Bye!Bye!

Simply Superb And THE Reference Recording For BTW!.......2002-01-28
Korngold's BETWEEN TWO WORLDS film symphony, and is the primary
focus of this review. I know of no other modern recording that
can compare with the selections presented here. And there may be
more cues yet to be released, since the CD booklet notes that the
"(s)oundtrack (was) edited by John Mauceri" who is, of course,
the conductor of this brilliant recording. The CD also contains
two of Korngold's classical compositions which are excellent,
and, for Korngold film-music fans, definitely a major "bonus."
Don't hesitate with this one; add it to your collection
immediately!
