Amazon.com essential recording

Some contend Roxy Music peaked on their first two LPs, the ones with Brian Eno. Others contend they were best on their next two LPs, without Eno. Country Life is the second LP of the latter grouping, and it probably is the highpoint of the band's career (although its predecessor, Street Life, is stiff competition). The haunting, melancholic "The Thrill of It All," the art-rockin' "Out of the Blue," the almost-pure '50s rock of "If It Takes All Night," and the decadent Berlin-before-the-War affectations of "A Really Good Time" all lead to the concluding "Prairie Rose," Bryan Ferry's campy ode to Texas and amour Jerry Hall. This was "alternative" rock before the term existed. After this, Roxy Music became an entirely different band. --Bill Holdship

4 out of 5 stars Yes, it's every bit as good as the cover!.......2007-01-28

Took me a long long time to get past that album cover (20 y/o testosterone, and all that) - but 2 of my favorite Roxy songs are on here. 1) "Bittersweet," the concluding chorus to which, Ferry sounds like he's being carried away by Hitler's troups (although a 2 hour glance thru a German textbook belonging to my wife, revealed that Ferry's just really bellowing, "NO, IT'S NOT THE END OF THE WORLD, I THINK I'LL JUST SIT HERE AND DRINK!") And 2) "If It Takes All Night" - about the closest thing Roxy ever did to a regular 12-bar/3 chord song. But those are MY faves, not a bad song on the album at all. And, yes, the word to keep in mind, while experiencing "Street Life," is, of course, DECADANCE.

5 out of 5 stars Love Roxy Music.......2006-11-15

If you love Roxy Music just get this. That is all that needs to be said.

5 out of 5 stars The Roxy Masterpiece- 5 stars ain't enough!.......2006-08-12

This album is by far the best of Roxy's catalogue (I own all their albums except Heart Still Beating and Live 2001). It deserves 10 STARS! If you buy only one Roxy studio album (hard not to, they're all bloody brilliant, even a few tracks of Manifesto), this must be it! Here are my opinions on the tracks:
1. The Thrill Of It All 10/10- What a brilliant way to start the album, Bryan Ferry's lyrics and Phil Manzanera's guitar are an excellent combination and this song could be released today and not sound dated one bit!
2. Three And Nine 15/10- Sweet acoustic guitar driven song with some sonic textures and some excellent sax and harmonica work
3. All I Want Is You 10/10- The most recognised song off this album, again excellent guitar rock and lyrics!
4. Out Of The Blue 13/10- The standouts just keep rolling here, this is Eddie Jobson's moment with his violin solo- there will NEVER be anything in rock music like this AGAIN!
5. If It Takes All Night 8/10- 50s doowop parody, the weakest track here but still 8/10!
6. Bitter-Sweet 9/10- A ballad and 'elephant march' in one song, great German chorus too
7. Triptych 9/10- This song should have been in Monty Python And The Holy Grail, which coincidentally was being made at the same time as this album
8. Casanova 10/10- Another killer track with creepy organ and sax solos
9. A Really Good Time 10/10- Sweet piano and violin ballad, sweet lyrics too and is the only real soft song here
10. Prairie Rose 9/10- What a brilliant way to close this magnificent masterpiece with an ode to Texas!
Overall 12/10
PS- This album is worth the sticker price for the sleeve alone (ESPECIALLY THE VINYL VERSION!

5 out of 5 stars What a Great Album!.......2006-07-08

This album is everything that is good about Roxy Music. It's hard to imagine any album that so perfectly encompasses what they're all about. Don't let the racy sleeve make you think this album is trying to sell itself on that. It rocks all the way through, and it just sounds like a great exercise in how to sound stylish and not at all boring.

Roxy Music weren't actors - they lived the songs. So if you like slightly quirky old-fashioned style rock and having a great time, do yourself a favour and buy yourself this great album. Bryan Ferry has a real natural talent for making music.

5 out of 5 stars It's the COUNTRY LIFE for me !! .......2006-06-14

For the fan of ROCK and ROLL who loves immediately memorable hooks accompanied with amazingly hard driving Pop Rock. No one who LOVES rock and roll couldn't love "The Thrill Of It All" or "Casanova" or any other song on this superb album. This is the hot whip crack ROXY MUSIC; the band that does not have a bad album, but despite the bickering between fans that occur due to allegiances to particular incarnations (all the way through AVALON) COUNTRY LIFE is undoubtedly one of their very best. Brian Ferry could not stop writing wonderful, masterful, Rock and Roll songs, exploring all of their roots, which come to fruition with this album and Roxy's next masterpiece SIREN. COUNTRY LIFE is one of the 1970s most fun, resonant, compelling, and, well, offensively wrapped albums...please note only BLIND FAITH's eponymous album cover was presumed more scandalously overt (or maybe Lennon and Ono's TWO VIRGINS which was, however, discreetly blank on the outside)...okay, I expect Brian Ferry did not mean to offend, but merely to lampoon his lusty ideals. One cannot listen to this album, look at that cover, and not love the 1970s and ROXY MUSIC, and this HOT as HOT POP ROCK CAN GET record album. And ROXY MUSIC, at that point, would apparently do nearly anything ("All I Want Is You") to chart a record in the USA...and they did, with those booby models on the cover, this record album peaked in March of 1975 at number 37 on the BILLBOARD Top 40 Albums chart with a mere 3 weeks on that chart (and there were still no USA single hits at this point). There were a lot of great albums out there in 1974 and 1975. Even with its scandalous (so to speak) cover, COUNTRY LIFE was overlooked in the USA, yet, relentlessly, has slowly floated to the surface, elbowing its way past contemporaries to be recognized as one of the VERY BEST of that year and that decade. You can hear everybody who was influenced by it...just listen to it!!

Ferry switching from a Nashville informed (or is it California?) Country Pop on "If It Takes All Night," finds the true venue for some of his most artistic predilections on "Bitter Sweet" which gets challenging in a theatrical kind of way, but is played with such humor it wins one over (Roger Waters favorite Roxy tune? Sounds much like very late PINK FLOYD). "Three Of Nine" is an unexpected marvel. And I'm terribly fond of the instant classic "Out Of The Blue" and "All I Want Is You" and the 16th century stylings of "Triptych" (a little PHYSICAL GRAFFITI anyone? In all fairness, I think it goes both ways. I hear a bit of HOUSES OF THE HOLY from '73 here as well.)

A lesser band would have saved the epic scorcher "The Thrill Of It All" for the close, but this band had more and more tunes to boggle their listeners with. "Casanova" is postured a supremely smarmy rock song, self conscious but in a creative way, revealing more than the narrator intends. The majestic second to the last track, "A Really Good Time" defines this album. How did ROXY MUSIC keep it up? So many wonderful songs so beautifully produced, so financially unrewarding in USA sales including concert tickets. I know when you listen close, that on that 2nd to the last tune's heals you won't miss the inspiration and influence of the last and perhaps best track "Prairie Rose" and it's subtle progression and beauty. Brian Ferry is a master, and had for a brief moment assembled around him the best Rock and Roll band in the world.

Album Description

It is with no small amount of pride that Inside Out Music has the unique opportunity to announce its very first signing from a former communist country: Poland's Riverside. Behind the Iron Curtain, over the past years, and especially in Poland, progressive music has very quietly (but surely) been growing in popularity and establishing itself as a real scene. As a result, some very interesting and promising bands have begun to see the proverbial light-of-day. Enter Riverside, with their hyper-creative compositional and instrumental skills, they create very intense compact soundscapes that could remind one of Pink Floyd from the days-of-old. Their debut CD received rave reviews from the progressive rock community with many calling it "the album of the year." We expect no less from Second Life Syndrome.

2 out of 5 stars Not so much ..........2007-06-03

I was caught by the "customers who bought _____ also bought Riverside, and since I'm a big prog rock fan, I ordered it without hearing it. My mistake, the cd is average at best, and rather boring overall

5 out of 5 stars Riverside : "Second Life Syndrome".......2007-05-13

This blew me away. It's totally original, it's filled with real / true emotion, and is highly inspirational. Outside of the deep lyrical content, the guitar solos / arrangements are what really moved me. Whether you want to lable Riverside as a Metal band, or a Progressive band, one thing is certain, they compose their music from the heart. You can literally feel the music here, and because of it's pureness, it pulls you in....

I can't recommend "Second Life Syndrome" highly enough. Simply stated, Riverside is awesome, and "SLS" is a masterpiece that should not be overlooked. Buy it with confidence.....

4 out of 5 stars poland, way to go!.......2007-05-12

Riverside, what a band! The first cd was a work of art. This one doesn't disappoint but is a little weaker than the first masterpiece. The band doesn't change its sound but it doesn't deliver the same punch. Don't get me wrong! This creation is another great effort. I tip my hat to Riverside, and am hoping to get yet another great masterpiece in the near future.

5 out of 5 stars a classic..,.......2007-04-12

Stirring, moving and highly emotional arrangments all through this cd make it a classic piece of work. Mariusz Duda's voice captivates and pulls you into each song. I'm a big fan of "epic" long songs and Second Life Syndrome is one of coolest ones ever. Beautifully morphing from highs and lows and back again. Buy it for this song alone. Let's hope that this group stays together for a long time for they have so much to offer to prog music.

5 out of 5 stars Monumental progressive/metal/emo.......2007-03-03

This album is breath-taking. The economy of music is well distributed to serve the emotional landscape of the album. Really, this guys from Poland are on point. The singer really gets you into the ambient mood. Its just sound like good music to me.

This double live set showcases the peerless calisthenics abilities of the 1988 Zappa big band on a collection of crowd-pleasing favorites, concert staples and cover songs. Zappa's crystalline Stratocaster sound (a far cry from the "squank" of the '70s) highlights some of the most lyrical and inspired solo guitar work of his life. Highlights include an adrenaline charged version of "Zomby Woof" a thoroughly rocking turn at Ravel's Bolero, and a horn arrangement of Jimmy Page's "Stairway to Heaven" guitar solo. --Andrew Boscardin

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars you never heard?.......2007-05-26

i saw a couple of shows on this tour the last two times i saw frank perform. it is a great band, did he ever have a bad one or an uninspired one? as far as this being the best live disc or discs? no. the sound quality is awesome the arrangements interesting and if you like big band productions this is for you.....

5 out of 5 stars Favorite FZ album.......2007-04-06

The way Bolero flows into Zoot Allures is very clever. In your face, Maurice, you no talent hack. And imagine the guitars of Stairway To Heaven done in horns. And rigt in the middle of Zombie Wolf, Joe Satriani's evil twin clone does some of his best work ever. The band at it's peak, plus a jab or two at Jimmy Swaggart during his post-sinning period. What more do you need?

4 out of 5 stars A little confusing what to make out of this..........2006-02-27

This package is quite loaded with Zappa gems. But at the same time, drummer Chad Wackerman, literally, in my opinon, ruins some songs. "Trouble Every Day", "Peguin in Bondage", "Mr. Green Genes" and "Find Her Finer" grooves are so mechanical, to fast, that in ruins the performance (they still have there moments). The squeky clean and seemingly to perfrect talent of Wackerman is to sterile at times for me. With that said, the rest of the band is quite good, and Wackerman dosen't always screw everything up. "Floretine Pogan (with a great guitar solo)" is literally amazing, in fact, the whole batch of "One Size Fits All" songs are worth the price alone. There are so many covers, which, to me, is pointless. Considering the amount of songs Zappa wrote and the brilliance of them, why cover some mediocore (way overplayed) tunes of Zepplin, Hendrix and Cream. In particular, "Stairway to Heaven", sucks, and why its reggae, is beyond me. In contrast, Ravels, "Bolereo", is awesome and Zappa's reggae arrangement is interesting enough to be on the record. In the end, despite nitpicking problems (another is Zappa guitar tone, which, at times, is hard to hear correctly because its so monotone and subdued), this comes off as a well recorded and fun record. I seem to be alone in my critique of this record, Zappa even said, this was possibly the best band he had ever put out on the road. "Florentine Pogan", "Heavy Duty Judy", and "Bolereo" make it worth the price of admission.

5 out of 5 stars Some of the best 80s stuff is right here.......2006-02-07

A lot of people are hung up on the Mothers, but Frank did a lot better stuff after they disbanded. Unfortunately, all people remember is the dirty humor stuff, but as Zappa himself said, "I think I have 1200 titles. If there's more than 100 sex songs, I'd be surprised."

If you've heard the classic 70s albums and aren't so sure about later material, give this a listen. The guitar tone is really amazing. It's pretty much nothing like that dirty wah-wah sound he was known for in the 70s, but it's kind of hard not to love the way it sounds. The band sounds crystal clear on this album. This is a really good 2 CD set.

It is ridiculous and jokey, but that's why it's fun stuff to have on in the background. FZ albums you can listen to intensely while they just play in the background. They're just that intense! But, if you're the type to plunk in a CD and stare at your radio in awe, you probably listen to too much heavy metal and you will probably tire of the jokes. If you can just enjoy fun music and have the patience to mellow out and let the songs sprawl out, you will really love this album.

Definitely check out "Make A Jazz Noise Here" which has all the same great tones but practically no lyrics. It is also a double-cd and comes from this same tour. If you like the jokey stuff, then also check out "Broadway The Hard Way," which ALSO comes from the same tour (man, that was a good tour, eh?) and so has the same great sound, but every song is more of a short goofy pop song. This album which I am currently reviewing is the middle album from that tour and it is the perfect middle ground between the all-joke of the first one and all-instrumental of the third one. Oh, it's pretty darn goofy, but there are some amazing musical passages in there, too. It is The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life!

5 out of 5 stars Disk 1 - Track 7 to the end........2005-11-04

I agree with some reviewers that Frank is "over the top" in some of his more commercial music - and I do not mean that as a compliment .... I'll go a step further: Frank is making fun of his audience a great many times, and they seem to relish being the butt of his jokes.

That said ... the first disk, from track 7 to the end is about as good a musical ride as you'll ever take. Move over Beethoven. The first six songs are for band warm up, and most of the second the disk is fodder for Frank to smirk in his dreams at his goofy followers, but the seven in the middle -- flat out fun, creative, beautiful, inspiring music. Buy this only for this second half of the first set - but cherish the pearl in the swine.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

Please buy it.

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

4 out of 5 stars Still better than today's "music".......2007-06-18

TOSOL is not my favorite of the Moodies and it certainly is not their best work by far. Still, it's the Moody Blues, and even at their worst, they are better than 99% of the "stuff" being peddled today and labeled music.

I enjoyed Justin Hayward's Your Wildest Dreams, I just Don't Care, and The other Side of Life. Hayward and Lodge collaborated on Running out of Love and I love the song on all levels, especially their sweet harmony.
John Lodge's It May Be a Fire isn't my fave of his but it was a pleasant surprise as was Rock n Roll Over You.

This CD is for die-hard MB's completists or those who love 80's sounding music. The "core 7 MB only" folks probably hate this one. I love The Moodies and am willing to stick by them thru thick and thin. This CD isn't vintage Moody Blues, but hey it WAS the 1980's.

3 out of 5 stars The beginning of the drum machine with acoustic guitar era.......2007-01-08

And now for all you Miami Vice fans The Moody Blues. I remember when this album came out as I still had high hopes for the band. Unfortunately, this would also mark the end for my hopes for this band. One of the Moodies strengths for me anyway was the band's ability to make what felt like organic music but with this album all that changed. The band's last album The Present hadn't sold as well as the band had hoped and also the band's label had now been taken over by Polygram. The idea was to come up with an album that would bring in new fans while still keeping the old. Enter new producer Tony Visconti who was most known for working with David Bowie. This album was also the first to feature no playing OR songwriting by Ray Thomas although he's shown in all the group photos and listed as a band member. This album did suceed in creating a new generation of fans thanks to the videos Your Wildest Dreams and The Other Side Of Life getting heavy airplay on MTV. In fact, both videos won MTV video awards. Rock And Roll Over You was featured in the Kirate Kid 2 movie. This was also the first tour the band did with many backup singers and additional musicians. As for the album itself sounds very processed and very 1986 if you know what I mean. There are a few good songs on here to be sure: Your Wildest Dreams, Running Out Of Love, Slings And Arrows, and It May Be A Fire. However, most of the rest is more than forgettible and some is even hard to listen to.

2 out of 5 stars Moody Blues sell their soul.......2006-07-30

This album is pretty bad (Moody Blues wise), and hasn't aged very well. It's got a few good songs, "Wildest Dreams," "Running Out Of Love" & "The Other Side Of Life," but most of it is so far off track to what makes the Moody Blues magical. It sounds like they're using a drum machine instead of Edge, and there's no Ray Thomas to be found. It reminds me of what happened to another band called Heart; selling your musical soul to keep up with the times.

I remember buying this album along with Deep Purple's "House Of Blue Light" in early '87. I didn't really like either very much. Can you imagine, two of your favorite bands crumbling to the ugly sounds of the mid '80's. To this day, I still don't like this album, but Deep Purple's did grow on me. I guess Purple didn't sound so dated in hindsight, because of the fact they were using real drums and all five of their members were involved. But not the Moodies.

Anyway, the next Moody Blues album, 1988's "Sur La Mer," was a lot better, if you like that "80's sound." But, if you are looking for a really good follow up to 1981's "Long Distance Voyager," you need to find 1983's "The Present."

3 out of 5 stars The Moodies go technopop...yikes!!!.......2006-03-28

For devoted Moody freaks, this album takes a little getting used to. When I first picked it up and listened to it in 1986, the first cut "Your Wildest Dreams" sounded like a sure winner for being a huge pop hit WHICH IT WAS, going all the way to #1 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary Chart, and peaking at #9 on the Billboard Pop chart. From there, the album takes a very unusual turn, and when I heard "Talkin' Talkin'", I about jumped out of my skin as I said to myself "Oh my God, the Moodies have gone technopop!!!" Then the next track "Rock And Roll Over You" (which was also included in the soundtrack of Karate Kid Part Two) left me feeling even more astonished and flabbergasted. The music then returns to "normal", with the ballad "I Just Don't Care", and "Running Out of Love", a song about being in a quandry of what to do with a fractured love relationship. The title cut is weird and spooky in its content, and the accompanying video (if you have ever seen it) is ten times as freaky. "Slings and Arrows" is a catchy track, with all the instruments falling into place one by one at the beginning of the song, while the remaining two tracks on the album, "The Spirit" and "It May Be A Fire" rank as average. Avid Moodies fans will find the best cuts here worth purchasing this album, but be prepared for a very different Moodies sound on a few of the tracks. Worthy of 3 1/2 stars.

3 out of 5 stars Average.......2005-09-12

Although I love the Moody Blues, this is not one of my favorite albums by them. It's got some great songs, but also a few that I just don't like that well. Still worth having for a true fan, however.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2007-03-09

An amazing record. I looked Ted up on Google because my teacher, Mike Rao, also a fantastic player, was one of Ted's students and spoke highly of him. That led me to Amazon, where I was surprised to find Ted's record for sale. Glad I bought it. He has a wonderful way with the standards. It's hard to beleive he's playing solo.

4 out of 5 stars I have waited so long for this.......2007-01-06

I am a George Van Eps lover. I came by this reissue when I was shopping for Van Eps CDs. The listening of the arrangements of these songs is a wonderful trip through the beauty of harmony. Voices responding to each other, bass lines and harmonics are magnifying the whole experience. The missing star (wich is totally based on personnal taste) comes from the experience M. Greene and the sound ingeneer made. They simultaneously taped the guitar straight through the board and through a samll Leslie rotating speaker wich gives a "phasing" effect. I find it a bit distractive.

The buy is worthed. The experience is exceptionnal. If you have studied a bit Greene's wonderful Chord Chemistry book and are a fan of guitar Chord Melody, THIS IS A MUST.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent guitar - a chord melody tour de force.......2007-01-04

I have few words to offer that can do this album justice. If you love solo jazz guitar, you will treasure this contribution from one of the all-time masters of the instrument. The multi-part arrangements sound like at least two people playing at once. Walking bass, lyrical melodies and intelligent harmonies flow out with beautiful clean tones. This is not just another stuffy jazz guitar album. It's smooooooth - easy for anyone to listen to.

Greene's arrangements are musical, lyrical, heavenly sounding, swinging, lovely and simply amazing. A true master.

I have been playing serious guitar a long time and have enjoyed hearing the many great players of all genres throughout my life. I can think of very few as put together as Ted Greene. The tasteful merger of a master technician harnessed within a sensitive artist. Inspired and inspiring - deserves 7 stars.

5 out of 5 stars I don't own this but I love it! It is absolutly SUBLIME !.......2006-07-31

It may seems strange. I don't own this record, but this morning I can't do nothing but listen countless times the samples of "Solo Guitar" here on Amazon. I find this record sublime. Nothing less. I didn't know about Ted Greene prior to these listenings and I am a Jazz guitarist that knows every player around present and gone. This to say how secret this album and this player really are. This is a gem, you can easily hear what a wonderful kind of harmonizations Ted was able to produce. His guitar was like a grand piano. Fantastic his use of harmonics too. He reminds me a little bit of Johnny Smith. And Johnny is one of my favourite players for sure. There's even something from Lenny Breau in his music, and Lenny was another master of the Jazz solo guitar playing. Ted's music is technically brilliant and emotionally tender and at the same time absolutly mesmerizing. The beauty this man had inside is really present in his music. You can feel he was a clean, gentle soul. This music is of the highest technical level possible but it is played to please and to give the audience emotions. It's not an ego trip, something that can happen in Jazz. It's a work of art of a lifetime (Ted infact recorded only this record under his own name). I'm gonna buy immediatly this album (and even the music books Ted wrote) because the samples here are absolutly enough to let me understand how big was this man and how precious his music was ..... if you have enough hear for true music you will do the same. A gem.

Some times later ... now I own this one. As I already told you, it's a gem. Nothing less.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best!.......2006-06-06

After one listen to this CD you might as well use your guitar as a coffee table. This man is a master of chord medley. If your a serious guitar player you NEED THIS CD! When your done listening then go buy all of his books. God Bless you Ted Greene.

Arty, classy, smug yet occasionally self-deprecating, Roxy Music took the excesses of glam and refined them into a beautifully stylized thing. Earning themselves a reputation as much for their fashionable attire as for their haute couture rock & roll, Roxy Music earned a string of hits with "Pyjamarama," "Do The Strand," and their club classic, "Love Is the Drug." Roxy Music's sense of rhythm had a certain sophistication that was further enhanced by the vocal phrasings of the consummate rock sophisticate, Bryan Ferry. His handling of Wilson Pickett's "In the Midnight Hour" is a classic in and of itself. "Dance Away" and "Same Old Scene" had an aching sentimentality to them, with Ferry proving it was hipper than hip to romantically croon. In his solo career, Ferry sounded even more like a new-school Sinatra with "Slave to Love." Two of Ferry's finest moments though were with his band, the soaring "More Than This" and the stunningly beautiful "Avalon." Their inclusion further makes Street Life indispensable. --Steve Gdula

An incredible master piece in my mind. If you enjoy dancing in the early 80's you will love this high class underground alternative sound.

1 out of 5 stars Never buy from this buyer!!.......2007-01-04

The CD came without a CD case and the CD did not play. I am very disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars have you listened to them for the musicianship?.......2006-10-21

Roxy music will always be a third tier band. Because they were so innovative and individualistic, they also placed themselves out of the mainstream. They also branched out a bit to much...were they a rock band, an ecclectic bunch or simply a vehicle for Bryan Ferry?

This is a good collection of songs. The beginning has the rock/avante guard stuff, the middle has more power pop stuff and the end is the Bryan Ferry "new romantic fluff".

When you listen to this repeatedy, you pick up on that the band were amazing, and I mean AMAZING musicians. SOunds that I had no idea were guitars are actually really cool innovative guitar riffs. They utilize impressive time and rythmic changes rarely scene in a rock band. The musicians must have had a strong sense of band since no one seemed to have an ego and step out as an instrumentalist. Phil Manzanera was such an underrated guitarist.

Listen to "street life" "pyjamarama" "over you" and "dance away" and tell me who else was making sounds like that (without synthesizers) in the
mid 70's!

Whom ever produced/arranged the material also was very talented and musically daring.

Their music was a bit more challenging then other 70's artist which may account for their lack of following in the U.S.

If you thought of them just as the "Love is a drug" band from the 1970's you will be surprised as to how musically accomplished and experimental these guys were. You will also be disappointed as to how Bryan Ferry steered the band away from the innovation and focused on being commercial.

4 out of 5 stars Roxy Music is the drug........2005-04-05

This collection is older, but it's 20 tracks long, and does include most of the essential Roxy/Ferry songs. Included amongst all these killer songs is "Love Is The Drug", "More Than This", "Avalon", and "Slave To Love". It would truly be impossible to fit everything on one disc, but the only things I really miss is Roxy's "Mother Of Pearl", and Ferry's "Kiss And Tell" and "Limbo". Otherwise it actually does a great job as a "best of". This being currently out of print however, you may have to hit the used stores, or deal with another "hits" album.

5 out of 5 stars A good but somewhat outdated hits set.......2002-08-17

This collection contains 20 of Bryan Ferrys biggest hits from both his band Roxy Music and from his solo career spanning from the glam rock days of the 1972 self-titled debut to the dreamier pop sounds of 1982s swansong Avalon all the way to Ferrys 1985 solo masterpiece Boys & Girls. Many fans will love this CD. I do. It's like a kaleidascope of many styles ranging from the campy glam-rock of the early 70s Roxy Music to the disco rock of Siren and finally the dreamy romantic pop of Flesh & Blood, Avalon & Boys & Girls. Unfortunately this set doesn't have anything from his strongest album Bete Noire nor anything from 1993s Taxi or 1994s Mamouna. Ferry had a top 40 hit called Kiss & Tell from 1987s Bete Noire but unfortunately that single isn't included on this set because even though there are 20 tracks on here this collection was released in 1986, a year before Bete Noire came out and because of that this set doesn't really offer the very best of Ferrys solo works in my honest opinion. The 1999 More Than This. 2000s Slave To Love: Best Of The Ballads & 2001s Best Of Roxy Music are stronger CDs that span Roxy Musics and Ferrys solo career mainly because Ferry made strong material long after this 1986 20 track set was released. That's probably why this CD is diffficult to find nowadays. I in no way am saying leave this CD alone, far from it. It's just not the best place to start your Bryan Ferry, Roxy Music CD collection. The other three compilations I mentioned are better bets even though they too aren't the best places to start either. Ultimately it's probably the wisest choice to eventually buy all of Ferrys solo albums and all of Roxy Musics albums too. This 20 track set is a CD worth owning but just that it's now kind of outdated.

4 out of 5 stars My outlook on On theSunday of Life.......2007-06-27

Some of the songs on here I have heard from Compilation Albums. Songs like Lynton Samuel Dawson is almost comical. It gives me a laugh which is a good thing. On the sunday of life is a beautiful song. I have always loved And the swallows dance above the sun. I believe its Space Transmission that I am thinking of but it gives off a sort of eerie feeling. It may not be their greatest work ever but it is definitely compelling in nature.

3 out of 5 stars If you're a fan, you should get this.......2007-05-30

You should buy the album, not only to familiarize yourself with the band's beginnings, but for one song: "It Will Rain for a Million Years". I agree that most of the album isn't very good, and all the other good songs on here (Nine Cats, Radioactive Toy, Nostalgia Factory, And the Swallows Dance Above the Sun) can be found on Stars Die, the compilation of their early work. But I would recommend buying the album just for the beautiful closing song, which itself is worth the price of admission. It can't be found anywhere else, and it's one of my favorite Tree songs of all time. It's classic PT, and really showed where the band (Or really, just Wilson at the time) was going with their sound. Anyway, yeah. Overall, a lot of experimental stuff, but still worth buying for the closer.

5 out of 5 stars Call me crazy..........2007-04-18

Call me crazy, but this is my favorite porcupine tree album. I agree that it is TOTALLY different from any other PT album, so I wouldn't recommend making it your first PT purchase. In my opinion it seems as though Steve Wilson was at the peak of his creativity during the making of this album, even if he was still undeveloped technically. While this album doesn't have all the bells and whistles that later PT albums have, I feel as though it is the most unique and creative of their albums (to be fair, i've only heard about 7-9 of their albums; not all of them).

4 out of 5 stars Not for beginners.......2006-05-20

The reason I chose the title for this review is, if this was your first glimpse into this immensely talented, super- intelligent group, it may detract from what was to come. But I feel that this collection gets undeserved poorer ratings. You have to keep in mind that these songs were only meant to be demos from a fictitious group of musicians (almost a tongue- in- cheek joke, if you will.) Sure they are what you would call "humble beginnings" but there are some really cool songs on here. The ones you personally dislike can always be skipped (I thank God daily for CD's!!!)I personally am glad to own this collection of tunes. It's somewhat like sharing in the journey of one of the greatest (IMHO) rock bands ever! But, I would start out with some of the band's more recent additions: In Absentia, Deadwing or Lightbulb Sun to break you in. To be honest, some of the songs on the above mentioned took a LITTLE time to grow on me, but most I loved instantly. I haven't been this excited about a band in many years ,but this wouldn't be a good place to start your journey. It's kinda like with any of the great bands I like (Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Yes,) I started out with the more current offerings at the time and went back through their catalog to see how far they had progressed. You will be amazed.....

4 out of 5 stars I guess some just might not get it..........2006-03-17

Those who critique this album for being what appears, at first glance, to be a thrown together mess seem to be missing the point that On The Sunday Of Life... is not an album on par with the sweat and tears that surely must have gone into later PT studio masterpieces such as In Absentia. Rather, Steven Wilson's debut album is almost entirely devoid of any commercial strain to be recognized by record companies, the almost randomness of the songs keeping true to Steven's notes in the reissue of this album, which states that most of the songs were written, recorded, and mixed in a matter of a few hours. While much of the album sounds horrible in retrospect to later PT classics, this still says a lot for Wilson's musical imagination as far as songs like Nine Cats and Third Eye Surfer go.

More present than on any other album, the psychedelic influence is especially present here, most notably on the aforementioned Third Eye Surfer, Music For The Head, and the title track, which are all euphoric exercises in space-like early Pink-Floydish jams. Footprints and It Will Rain For A Million Years are also a lot of fun, but not nearly as much as Nine Cats, which is in my opinion one of Wilson's most beautiful and soaring compositions to date, as well as the explosive Radioactive Toy, which has since become an epic concert favorite (as highlighted on their live album Coma Divine.) And yes, as just about every other review has and probably will mention, Jupiter Island and Linton Samuel Dawson are about as pleasing to listen to as nails on a chalkboard when I'm in the mood for PT, but stay true to the playful mood in which much of this album was conceived.

Steven had yet to take on a full-time band lineup for PT yet, and his musicianship was not up to the level it is at now, but for the primitive recording techniques he had available (and considering all the drums are created by his cheap drum machine) On The Sunday Of Life... should be studied by all students of the studio engineering programs rapidly growing in music schools, as to how exactly an amateurish home recording should sound. 4 stars, even with the filler.

i just love this album.it makes me laugh and think hard sometimes too.good charlotte just keeps getting better.

1 out of 5 stars Bad Charlotte! Absolutely horrible Charlotte!.......2007-01-10

Cool! More emo for the hit stations to pump into the ears of mindless musicoids who obey whatsoever the airwaves tell them! Actually, that was a bit harsh on this band's fans. But anyway, this is an absolutely atrocious release with the exception of "I Wanna Live" or whatever it's called. I heard this album about two years ago and that's the only song that stood out to me. Don't buy this! It's pop trash and there are much more sophisticated bands you could look for. (I.E. Lostprophets, still slightly emo but much better lyrically and instrumentally)

1 out of 5 stars GC SUCKS!.......2007-01-08

Hahahahaha. This band sucks, period. Honestly, I have never heard such horrible displays of music. Wait I have, that was Paris Hilton, K-fed, and Simple Plan. Wow. Hard to believe that the music scene has become this awful. I wonder what kind of idiots run the music industry these days. Whatever happened to the good ole days of BLack Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Jimi Hindricks, Metallica, Pantera, Alice in Chains, etc. All of these good bands/artists have basically been replaced with whiny, wimpy, bubble-gum pop/rock bands/artists like GC, Simple Plan, Jessy McCartney, Paris Hilton, etc. I can't understand why wimps with no talent whatsoever are given recording contracts.

Anyways, back to this piece of crap band. This album just flat-out sucks. All the tracks are terrible. The lead singer sounds sexually frustrated which is absolutely annoying to hear. The guitar playing is a joke. These guitarists clearly don't know how to create a good riff. All they use is power chords and distortion. The production is terrible too. Btw, if you wanna know how whiny the lead singer can get, just listen to the first single off the album. It has him doing a spoken part which sounds more like a crying four-year-old than anything. It is ridiculous but not surprising when I hear most high school students saying how good this band is or that they rock hard. People, you don't know anything about what good music is or what rocks hard. For something that rocks hard, try Pantera, Metallica, Killswitch Engage for that.

I will be training to become an SBI agent in two years and know that I will have to deal with many juveniles in my line of work which makes me hate this band even more b/c that's what most of them listen too and rap(don't get me started on how much I despise this). I don't have a lot of respect for adolescents these days come to think of it. The fact that many of them are such spoiled brats and complain that their lives are horrible b/c their parents are too strict really pisses me off. In essence that's what this band talks about in their lyrics, especially on this album. I have had all I can take of bands like this and their fans who are ungreatful to be alive. This album deserves 0 stars, btw.

P.S. Also, if I have offended anyone by this posting, deal with it!

3 out of 5 stars Teens like this music.......2007-01-05

My teen daughters like this group. Too weird for me though.

3 out of 5 stars An Angsty Saga.......2006-09-29

I've given up my Good Charlotte fan status and tried to chuck my "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" CD ages ago. It's kind of personal, but I just kind of outgrew them.
Anyways, on this CD, I think the only song I like is "Predictable." I was resistant to it, but it wore me down. The speech-rant part in the middle cracks me up every time. Sorry, Benji and Joel. I know you showed vulnerability, but that whole "You're never coming back!" stuff makes me laugh.
It's not really good, and not my favorite thing ever, but it's fun to sing along like angst-filled pseudo-punks (with the windows firmly closed, to keep our cred intact, of course).

Album Description

"In the Moment" (Art of Life Records AL1024-2) was digitally recorded by Mick Guzauski (Eric Clapton, Yellowjackets, Earth Wind and Fire) and Neil Dorfsman (Paul McCartney, Dire Straits, Sting) and mixed by Hal Winer in 24-bit/96kHz at BiCoastal Music in Ossining, New York on December 16, 2004. Bob is joined by the current rhythm section for his Big Band which includes Jay Anderson on bass, Phil Markowitz on piano and John Riley on drums. Six of the nine songs featured on "In the Moment" were composed by Mintzer. The album also features two standards, "Listen Here" by Eddie Harris and "Time After Time" by Styne & Cahn. "Forgiveness", written by Phil Markowitz, concludes the album.

One of the key elements that contributed to the successful execution of the music the Quartet recorded was the arrangements. Each arrangement was crafted in such a way that there was a sense of composition to each tune without having the writing being too cumbersome. Bob made sure to leave lots of room for each individual's interpretation of the music. With players like these you want to provide a setting where they are able to do their own thing freely. There is a balancing act between establishing form and guidelines and allowing the room for individual expression within the arrangements.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Jazz Acoustics.......2007-05-17

Yellowjacket saxman Bob Mintzer incorporates a well-known Eddie Harris tune into his latest side project, In the Moment. "Listen Here" is a highlight of this all-acoustic quartet affair, but unlike Bromberg's disc, this one is no paean to the soul jazz era. The opening track's title, "Straight Ahead," is probably an apt metaphor for the music herein, except that it's much more than a mere blowing session. And that's due primarily to Mintzer's compositional palette.

"Aha" has the unmistakable feel of the Jackets at their best (it first appeared on their Altered State CD) and "Play Pretty" would fit nicely into the band's oeuvre. "Simple Song" has an attractive melody and a sweet feel, and Mintzer breaks out his bass clarinet on "What's the Word" and "Blues," recalling Eric Dolphy in particular on the latter.

Mintzer's saxwork is stellar throughout, and he and his colleagues--bassist Jay Anderson, pianist Phil Markowitz and drummer John Riley--breathe new life into the well-worn "Time After Time" (the Julie Styne/Sammy Cahn standard, not the Cyndi Lauper hit). In the Moment has many fine moments. Recorded in one day, it is a relaxing, thoroughly enjoyable, beautifully produced and well crafted work.

Here's the Bob Mintzer disc you've been waiting for. Out on a break own from his stellar work with the Yellowjackets, and away from his big band commitments, Mintzer has put together a quartet release that spotlights his gorgeous tone and clever improvisations. Backed by a well sync'd rhythm section (from his big band) of Jay Anderson, Phil Markowitz and John Riley, Mintzer takes his tenor to task on Eddie Harris' finger snappin "Listen Here". Switching to bass clarinet on a couple of pieces, Mintzer blows down and dirty on "Blues", and switches to insouciance on "What's the Word", with it's Monk like rhythm work. Back to tenor on his original "Play Pretty", Mintzer and company make mainstream jazz flow like a spring river. Markowitz's "Forgiveness" is an ethereal treat in which the sympathetic band draws out some marvelous interplay and nuances. Persistently unheralded, Mintzer is a composer, arranger and musician that deserves more appreciation from fans looking for the next big thing.

George W. Harris - All About Jazz

5 out of 5 stars This CD is definitely IN THE MOMENT and should be in your jazz collection. Five stars!.......2007-03-23

Then suddenly it hit him! These collected, maybe even lost sounds come through Bob Mintzer's horn with a new direction, a new lilt, a new freedom. With harmonies that sound like they could have come from decades forward, Bob Mintzer, Jay Anderson, Phil Markowitz and John Riley take on such classics as Eddie Harris' "Listen Here," Styne & Cahn's "Time After Time," and six Mintzer originals with such amazing creativity that they will knock your socks off! Mintzer's fresh riffs and spontaneous interaction with his band mates' groove, proves that his stimulating solos build a good feeling that has become widely appreciated and unpredictable. Not since John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins laid their saxophonics on the jazz world has a tenor saxophonist become so poised to step forward and offer a quartet that features so much virtuosity and brilliant musicality as offered by these four. The music has lots of room for improvisation and conversation as indicated by the amazing fleetness of Markowitz on piano and the articulate plucking by Anderson on acoustic bass. These blowing sessions not only showcase Mintzer trading fours and swinging with drummer John Riley, find him revisiting the bass clarinet on "What's The Word". This CD is definitely IN THE MOMENT and should be in your jazz collection. Five stars! SOTJ top picks: "Straight Ahead" and the ballad "Forgiveness."

Sounds of Timeless Jazz Web Site

5 out of 5 stars In a sea of sax quartet releases, "In the Moment" rises well above the crowd........2007-03-23

There seem to be two groups of listeners who gravitate to the music of saxophonist Bob Mintzer. One the one hand, he is one of the most prolific and esteemed Big Band leaders and arrangers in jazz history, a graduate himself of the famed Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra and a frequent nominee for big band Grammies. One the other hand, he is a 15-year veteran of the Grammy-winning, smooth/funk quartet, The Yellowjackets. It's not surprising, then, that Mintzer's name is not often connected with small ensemble, straight-ahead post bop material. Yet, it is this "third face" of Bob Mintzer that shines on his new quartet release, In the Moment (Art of Life Records), a recording that should readily expand the fan base of this eclectic tenorman.

Bob Mintzer can trace the development of his diverse talents to the time he spent listening to records, visiting jazz clubs, and playing clarinet and saxophone as a youth in New Rochelle, NY. Attending music school, he spent hours practicing, then moved on to composing, arranging, songwriting, jamming, "doing all the things that are involved in the learning process." His first big job forshadowed his work as a big band leader and arranger-playing Monday nights at the Village Vanguard in the Thad Jones and Mel Lewis Big Band. From 1978 he led his own big bands, melding traditional lyricism and swing with the more unpredictable character of modern music, and playing with such diverse artists as Jaco Pastorius, Louis Belleson, Art Blakey, Tito Puente, James Taylor, Aretha Franklin and the New York Philharmonic. He joined the Yellowjackets in the early 1990s, and his thirteen Grammy nominations are nearly equally distributed across big band and contemporary jazz categories. In the Moment fits into neither group but is no less a demonstration of Mintzer's chops as performer, arranger and composer.

As a modern mainstream recording, In the Moment has few surprises but many delights. Mintzer's first quartet recording in six years, the 7 originals and 2 covers are firmly rooted in the bop tradition, less dazzling as innovations than as demonstrations of virtuosity and collaboration. For partners Mintzer features his Big Band rhythm section, Phil Markowitz on piano, Jay Anderson on bass, and John Riley on drums, and their long-term association is reflected in their telepathic interplay as well as glowing solo turns. Dubbed "one of the most sensitive, lyrical and inventive piano players of all time" by early employer Chet Baker, Phil Markowitz is a regular compatriot of Dave Liebman as well as Bob Mintzer and a highly respected composer who provides many of the album's finest moments and the glorious closing tune, "Forgiveness." Bassist Jay Anderson may get more attention as a member of the Mintzer Big Band than for his decade anchoring the Lynne Arriale Trio, but his lyrical play with that ensemble is close at hand with the Mintzer Quartet. Former student of Joe Morello and Woody Herman alum, drummer John Riley has appeared with a Who's Who in jazz and is a member of the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. Unobstrusive throughout the recording, he nevertheless is always in the right place with the right time.

The two covers appear back to back on the second and third tracks. On Eddie Harris' "Listen Here," Mintzer's gruff vibrato sounds like two horns, especially in the higher register where a slight squeal gives it an edge. Markowitz lets his left hand hold down the fort while his right runs off to the nearest playground. "Time After Time" (Styne and Cahn) is a comfortable post bop journey through a classic tune, Markowitz' clear articulation and shifting forms keeping the interest high in the piano's interlude.

Mintzer penned six of the nine tracks. The opening tune is titled "Straight Ahead" but the melody takes a few twists and turns from the first verse, sax sailing over Anderson's brisk bassline and constant tingling from Riley's percussion; Anderson shines with his heavy-handed pizzicato solo. On "Aha," Mintzer's show of horn power, along with the harmonies woven by bass and piano, give the impression that the Big Band has come along for the ride. Even Riley seems to have grown a larger trapset. The aptly titled "Simple Song" starts out as a lovely ballad, the sax providing its own lyrics while Markowitz treads lightly and brightly over Anderson's bouncy bass; Mintzer provides more swing than sentiment on the final chorus. "What's the Word" has the swinging acrobatics of an old bop tune, suggesting a date with Charlie Parker. Here Mintzer plays bass clarinet, giving the tune a woody resonance.

On the danceable "Play Pretty," everyone does. The final chorus proves more interesting as Mintzer turns a few phrases inside out to see what will shake loose, pulling it back together before Riley's final tingle. Mintzer selects the perfect horn to carry the dark and whining melody of "Blues"--nothing speaks of a deep bottomed-out blues with more authority and sympathy than the bass clarinet. As he slides around the storyline, Markowitz wails his own blue theme, and Mintzer returns with more twists and turns, proving that the big horn has more flexibility than is typically demonstrated.

Markowitz introduces his "Forgiveness" with some hollow rumbles, with sheets of shimmer rising from Riley's cymbals. Mintzer takes the melody on a graceful ride, buoyed by Riley's rolling mallets and long decays. Piano and bass come to the foreground creating a majestic and dark tapestry while Riley continues to contrast deep rolls with high-pitched shimmers. Relative to the other tracks, this exquisite finale has a more 21st century shape, and Mintzer rises to the challenge with some of his most searching and penetrating lines of the set.

In the Moment-which aptly describes the collaborative zeal of this quartet-serves as a good reminder that, when he isn't blowing big band charts or smooth funk with the Yellowjackets, Bob Mintzer is a great straight-ahead tenorman. Good stories well told, even with familiar plots and themes, make for good ensemble efforts and, if not challenging to the ear, are nevertheless thoroughly engaging. In a sea of sax quartet releases, In the Moment rises well above the crowd.
