Album Description

While other genre labels like Narada and Windham Hill diversified from their new age roots, Real Music has been consistent over the years in providing nothing but the best music for relaxation, meditation and spiritual enhancement. Their most notable recordings come from an Eastern Buddhist mindset, with multi-instrumentalist Karunesh leading the pack on the strength of previous discs Zen Breakfast and Nirvana Café. His basic approach to contemplative music involves a blend of exotic textures (bells, chimes, Tibetan bowls, sitar and Chinese instruments) with easy grooves and rich walls of ambience. The new collection's trance inducing instrumentation and sensuous rhythms begins with a few minutes of pure ambience and sitar, before slowly introducing a gentle percussive line ("For the Joy of It All"); Avinash's graceful Indian violin carries a mournful beauty that is also part of the similarly hypnotic, easy grooving "Monsoon's Dance." Bikram's Bansuri flute floats through beautifully in key locations, such as the introduction of "Mount Kailash." While the uninitiated might feel that there's a certain repetitive nature to the tracks (which usually begin with sparse instrumentation before the electricity is turned on), the intention is more to invoke a sense of inner peace than to be truly innovative. The title of the richly textured "Zensual" sums up the mystical intent of the thought provoking exercise.

5 out of 5 stars The pleasure in the feeling of non-existence.......2006-05-28

I heard the song "Monsoon Dance" on sky.fm. I previewed other songs and then bought almost all songs. Others are fine too, just listened once.

It's been 4 days since I bought them. I am not listening to any other song than Monsoon Dance for almost 4 days, day and night.. I am usually obsessed with these kind of mystic songs, listening to one song at a time for days a stretch, even when I sleep.

Thats the effect of the song Monsoon Dance. Truly, the mystic feeling of non-existence is an amazing pleasure. I feel one with the entire universe when I listen to this song.

I wonder what the composer might have gone through to come up with such an amazing piece of music. The Indian violin's effect is rather deep.

5 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL.......2006-03-10

This is one of the most beautiful CDs I have every heard. I bring it everywhere when I need to relax. The sound of the instruments from India are just breathtaking.

2 out of 5 stars This is great!.......2006-01-12

....if you like really strange, annoying German people who try to go "native." This is nothing but commodified exoticism; music for spiritual enhancement my arse....

5 out of 5 stars Masterful & mystical "new age music" from KARUNESH .......2005-09-23

I discovered the music of this German-born composer/multi-instrumentalist by accident. I was browsing in the new age music section at a certain mega-bookstore, looking for the latest CD from Kitaro (one of my favorite artists.) Well, I didn't find the Kitaro disc that day, but another CD soon caught my eye, one by an artist I'd never heard of - "Call of the Mystic" by Karunesh. Curious about the cover-art and song titles, I put the CD on the store's headphone listening station. I was soon immersed in the music, and intrigued by its exotic sounds. Of course, these were only brief sound clips from the album, so as each snatch of music soon cut off, I was left wanting to hear more. I then came home, found the CD on Amazon, and ordered it (sorry to the bookstore, but your prices were just too high! : ) Anyway, to make a long story short, in the several months since then, I have become a major fan of Karunesh (pronounced "Care-un-ish", which is, I learned, also the sanscrit word for "compassion".) I have now also collected several titles from his extensive back catalog, and while all of his albums have their own strengths, I believe that "Call of the Mystic" still rates as one of his finest overall releases. With it's mystical/mysterious feel, warm synth textures, and heavy use of exotic instruments, this CD literally makes me feel better when I listen to it. I know that the term "healing music" is probably overused in this genre, but in this case the term really fits. It's one of those rare albums that somehow pulls the listener into its World, and transports them to a better state-of-mind for it's duration. (Kitaro is perhaps the only other new age artist who's work has this effect on me.) Like most of Karunesh's works, this album is fully instrumental (So those of you who do not like vocals/lyrics with your new age music will be particularly pleased!), with all of the tracks running in the 5 to 7 minute range (a good length for this type of music.) Now, as people usually like points of comparsion for reviews such as this, I would say that Karunesh falls into the same general "new age/instrumental/electronic" genre as Kitaro, Vangelis, or Patrick O'Hearn (although his music's rarely as gloomy as O'Hearn's can be.) However, comparisons can tend to be a tad misleading, and at the end of the day Karunesh is a unique artist who's music has a personality of its own...Here is a quick rundown of all the tracks: the album opens with "The Joy of It All", an Eastern-flavored track which benefits from a hypnotic percussion groove and the sitar work of special guest Govi (a respected new age artist in his own right.) "Hearing You Now" features piano/flute lines that rotate back and forth, and an ear-catching mix of both electronic & acoustic drumming. "Monsoon's Dance" gives us one of Karunesh's most memorable melodies, played with a gorgeous blend of piano, Indian violin, and synth/percussion backing. "Mount Kailash" has a deeply-spiritual feel, and is highlighted by another guest spot from Govi (this time playing what sounds like an acoustic guitar run through a digital delay effect...quite a beguiling sound, actually!) "Sunrise at the Ganges" is basically a sitar/flute duet set over a backdrop of synth chords and Indian-style drumming. "Zensual" takes on a darker, electronic tone, with some mysterious "reed"-like synth soloing, layers of keyboard ambience, and a sensual rhythmic groove. "And the Grass Grows by Itself" adds some contrast to the pevious track, based mainly around acoustic sounds and a fun, hopeful melody. This track also features the hum of a Tibetan singing bowl (an unusal sound that I have come to like.) Lastly, "Ancient Voices", the only track with no noticable percussion line, is made up almost entirely of sitar and woodwind sounds, and serves to end the album on a peaceful, contemplative note. All in all, this is an album (and artist) that should not be missed if you are a fan of new age music. I will have to agree with what another reviewer said about Amazon's soundclips, though. The brief clips here are all of the opening moments of these songs, before the main themes really kick in - so the CD really does need to be heard in its full context to be truly appreciated. Also, speaking of other reviews, I think it is quite remarkable that of the six customer reviews that have been posted of this CD thus far, EVERY single one has given it a perfect 5 stars!...Amen!

5 out of 5 stars Call of the Mystic~Karunesh.......2005-07-10

Even though this is my first experience with Karunesh, this album was exactly what I expected,...and I enjoyed the different selection of instruments used to evoke a light, whimsical, and meditative feeling of calm. Recommended for light meditation, yoga practice, or massage therapy.

If ever a recording was made for the CD medium, it's Tibetan Bells. Originally released in 1972 on Island Records, it has taken nearly 30 years for this influential recording to make its way to compact disc, but it's worth the wait. Henry Wolff and Nancy Hennings use Tibetan bells, gongs, and singing bowls to orchestrate crystalline echoes of the mind. There are no tunes or melodies here; rather, this is a shimmering aurora borealis of sound that's diaphanous and reverberant, like windows opening up into an altered state of sound. High chimes ring against a backdrop of sustained glissando from a singing bowl. Deep gongs call out from a hidden abyss. Released in the waning days of psychedelia, Tibetan Bells was the deep chill ambient album of its time. Decades later, it resonates. --John Diliberto

Album Description

This album is a digital re-mastering of the original Tibetan Bells released in London, England 1972, the legendary "underground classic". A milestone recording event, this superb state-of-the-art CD makes available for the first time the full wealth of sound captured by the 1972 studio master tapes. For, it is a surprising fact that this premier of the celebrated Tibetan Bells series that grew in time to the world-celbrated cycle, has never unitl now appeared in a format other than the outmoded vinyl LP. That shortcoming is made good at last by this present Tibetan Bells millenium album. Not quite a new recording, but far more thant the "old", this brilliantly re-mastered CD restores the pristine textures and the unheardshades of an elusive music living on the remote edge of the audible. Thus after a quarter century and more there is now obtainable the single record long famed for defining the music now known as "New Age" -- the soundscape of a re-invented consciousness.

4 out of 5 stars desert island.......2007-06-06

i got this in 1977 on vinyl.
the cd version kills your ears as the sound is so pure.
i literally cant listen to it.
i recommend the vinyl if you can find it. the pops are cool with it, and far better mastering than todays aluminium baked crap.
or, bung it to cassette to warm it up.
its great but too bad about not having the original artwork. this is cheezy.
P.S. the ones after this are not nearly as good!

1 out of 5 stars Loud clashing drum sounds ruin the bells.......2005-06-01

Years ago I used the original of this work for meditation.
This remastering ruins the original and in my opinion is totally unsuitable for meditation. Try Tibetan Bowls instead.
The item was returned for resale.

3 out of 5 stars Reflect your mood.......2003-07-02

I have been using them for my sessions, but be warned that if you are in a middle to negative mood, it will seem scary/dark to you. If you're in a very positive mood, even the sharpness of the metal bells will not seem too loud and you will fall into a very deep trance. My clients agreed, so I put the CD last when we're already in a positive mood.

5 out of 5 stars Perfection of tone.......2002-09-21

Ideal for meditation, directed energy work. Promotes stillness of the heart and soul.

5 out of 5 stars Sea of Immortality.......2002-03-04

Listening to this Cd in a darkened room with Chinese insense sticks one is almost transported to another world.

Turn off your mind, relax and float downstream sang John Lennon some six years before this album was recorded. This music transcends boundaries and defies description. It has a timeless quality almost irridescent except you cannot see it.

The listener almosts gasps at the perfection of the sounds that seem to hang in the air.

This music is a joy to listen to, a joy to experience. You cannot say much about it but you can feel it with your mind and body.

What an experience!

Album Description

By the expression of subtle harmonic relationships, Tibetan Bells III, quickly transcends the temporal domain. The resonance of the Tibetan bell tones, far richer than any synthetically produced sound, builds an increasingly fine perception and subtle comprehension in the listener. The purity of tone and long haunting echoes of Tibetan Bells III create an audible curtain permitting the listener to perceive a universe which extends beyond conventional limits. The spectacular duration and purity of the bell tones can be attributed to more than their composition. Wolff and Hennings are the sounding boards through which we can approach a visionary realm.

5 out of 5 stars Unusual and Artistically Bold.......2001-02-06

Henry Wolff and Nancy Hennings together with producer Brian Keane have made a CD that truly adventures into new territory. All the instruments are acoustic but the effect is other worldly. This CD moves at it's own unique pace. Instead of melodies and rhythms, the music is propelled by sound waves and textures. All cuts are interesting although it may take the listner an adjustment period to get used to listening to something so radically new. The title cut "Empty Mirror" is a particularly impressive work of art, creating a symphonic work of both musical and meditative significance.

Album Description

Tibetan Bells II is the outcome of years of study, travel, and experiment by Henry Wolff and Nancy Hennings, two musicians resolutely in quest of the "sound between the spaces." Bringing together musical elements never before associated, sounds vastly separate it time, space, and tradition, the musicians have advanced across remote areas of sound. In Tibetan Bells II, the ancient resonances of the bells of Tibet are deployed within a musical framework uncompromisingly 20th century, and Western. Tibetan Bells II is an unprecedented synthesis of the sounds of East and West, past and present. The instruments of this release are exclusively the bells of Tibet. These remarkable instruments have been described elsewhere, yet it is a striking fact that the tones of Tibetan bells, the indigenous products of a highly evolved yet little known Asian culture, have often been confused with the ultra-modern sounds of electronic music. Nothing could be further from the truth. There is no electronic tampering and the resonances of the bells owe nothing to outside sources. Unearthly and timeless, they are their own.

5 out of 5 stars Great for doing Eastern massage modalities........2005-07-23

I have really enjoyed this whole series. The intensity and focus are just right for doing Eastern styles of massage like Shiatsu.

5 out of 5 stars Zen and the art of musical performance.......2002-03-08

This album along with it's predecessor broke new ground in a variety of ways. The first album released at a time when Western music was becoming more complex could not have provided a more significant contrast with it's stark simplicity.

This, the second album by Henry Wolff and Nancy Hennings saw the light of day at the same time as punk was rejecting the pomp and complexity of modern rock and returning to the more simple rock'n'roll roots.

Listening to this album today using the newer technology of Compact Disc, the listener discovers a new realm of listening and experiential pleasure.

Whereas the vinyl album could convey soe of the recorded sound the CD captures much more. And, not only does the sound resonate much more but the space between the sounds is much sharper and clearer. The CD provides the listener with a vehicle with which to transcend the ordinary listening experience and carry one off to a higher plane.

As to the music itself there is a richness which defies description in words. It is evocative, it is soothing, it is ecstatic. It is all this and more.

Again this album would benefit from a remastering for DVD-audio.

Excellent

5 out of 5 stars Ambient Classic.......1999-04-06

Oh, I don't know about "not for the general public." I believe just about everybody could get into the quiet stillness of this music.

This album uses only bells, chimes and Tibetan singing bowls in very languid, slow-evolving zero-time compositions. Perfect for relaxation, meditation, & surrendering to the cosmic void.

Proves conclusively that synthesizers aren't necessary for ambient zone-outs. This album is Wolff/Hennings's best and an ambient classic.

5 out of 5 stars A very special CD for meditators and altered states.......1999-03-27

This CD will take you on a mind journey without any chemicals, this is NOT background music, but music that is designed to be listened to with good equipment or headphones, all of the Wolf/Hennings work is excellent, but the newest is better recorded. Not for the general public.

Product Description

With Tibetan Bells IV: The Bells of Sh'ang Sh'ung, new trails are blazed by the musicians who created the classic Tibetan bells trilogy. Sh'ang Sh'ung is the Tibetan name for the fabled lost kingdom where the most precious teachings of Buddhism were conceived, are concealed, and remain preserved to this day. On this recording, Henry Wolff and Nancy Hennings weave a metaphor in music, a sound poem depicting a journey to the mythic precincts of Sh'ang Sh'ung. Legends surrounding this remote and lost terrain tell of the punishing hardships that must be overcome to reach the city. Wolff and Hennings succeed in depicting the physical, mental, and spiritual tribulations of such a pilgrimage, and the awe inspiring spectacle of the Himalayan wilderness. The recording opens with the travelers striking across ranges of crystal cliffs and steep snowfields haunted by the Yeti, the legendary abominable snowmen. Seemingly insurmountable dangers are briefly forgotten at the sight of the sun rising over rose tinted glaciers and wind funneled plumes of snow careening against an azure sky the first hint of a spiritual splendor to come. The pilgrims continue to endure extreme mental disorientation, a breakdown of the time space continuum, and the repeated shattering and reassembling of consciousness before they finally reach their goal. The recording closes with a rejoicing populace escorting the newcomers triumphantly through the great gates of Sh'ang Sh'ung. While the purity of tone and long haunting echoes of the Tibetan bells remain central to the artists' vision, The Bells of Sh'ang Sh'ung makes use of other instruments, both Eastern and Western. The synthesizer, long considered the natural electronic counterpart to the magic resonance of the bells, adds additional depth and atmosphere to this ambitious venture. Consistent with previous Tibetan bells recordings, the studio itself is exploited as an ultra modern instrument in its own right.

5 out of 5 stars Xumantra (shoo-mantra), cosmic voyagers.......2001-05-30

I have not read much about the members of Xumantra or their artistic aims, but fortunately, their music pretty much seems to speak for itself. This is not so much an album as it is a headspace- created by gongs, bells, bowls, and other metallic implements used in meditation and ritual in the east- which will serve to relax and center you, no matter what your beliefs may be. Buy this album, buy some incense (I recommend Nag Champa), turn out the lights, and just EXIST in the music, if you have the courage. This is not party music, and it is not 'easy listening'.. it is simply sculpted sound with magnificent power and scope. And yet it is extremely minimalistic. A person conditioned by commercial radio and television might call it boring, but the fact that Xumantra doesn't call to mind the flashing lights and flickering images of our modern world only adds to their appeal. If you like this, you may also want to look into the works of Steve Roach, Robert Rich, percussionists like Jim McGrath and tuvan singers like Jim Cole (Colescence).
