"A Perfect Circle is not a side project," proclaim the members of Perfect Circle. It's a caution worth heeding, since the most identifiable name in the band is that of vocalist Maynard James Keenan, lead singer of Tool. On the other hand, one wouldn't be much inclined to file this one under "side project" anyway. The musicians involved go to great lengths to create something distinctive, and if the uniformity of sound can be attributed to the fact that guitarist Billy Howerdel (whose previous songwriting credits include Tool, the Smashing Pumpkins, and David Bowie) is responsible for the lion's share of the music, well, the others aren't exactly marching in lockstep. Keenan's vocals here are quite different from anything heard from him before. Subtle, thoughtful, sober, they're a far cry from Keenan's work with Tool, which is what makes this album more than a side-project curiosity. Mer de Noms has a life all its own. --Genevieve WilliamsAmazon.com

Buy this album. The Noose, The Package, The Outsider, and Pet are worth alone the price of the cd.
cuz they don't give a f#*k about you like i do.......2006-11-15
right from the begining i knew that the slow drum tapping beat and low bass where gonna go somewhere and sure enough at 4:09 comes the first hard riff and it was so awsome how they led up to it though that the whole rest of the cd i could'nt switch or fast forword any of the other songs, i had to hear them all the way through. even when it came to "the nurse who loved me". at first i was like, huh , eeh, but after a couple times listening and hearing the lyrics i won't change it, even to the day if it comes on in my car my friends are listening to it, like it or not.
all the radio song where great, if you don't know them you must have been living under a rock. but when i got this cd i got it with "aMOTION" THE DVD-REMIX CD SET, and when i got home i watched the dvd first and saw the "counting bodys like sheep" video and loved it, then come to my suprise on "thirteenth step" number 10 "pet" has the same lyrics but is definently not the same song(if you've heard, you know what i mean)but it was'nt til later when i got "eMOTIVe" that my friend told me it was a complete cover album pretty much, then after i listened to it i saw that they covered their own song "pet"(who else has ideas like this) and ever since i figured that out "pet" has always been my favorite song on this album. and this album is a most have for ANYBODY!!! Product Description
A trio of noted Australian musicians--Iva Davies, Richard Tognetti and Christopher Gordon--composed the film's score. They previously collaborated on "The Ghost of Time," a piece commissioned for the Millennium celebrations in Sydney, which came to the attention of Peter Weir. The director was so impressed, he played the piece on the Master And Commander set throughout production, and he asked its creators to write the music for his movie. The score interweaves "Old World" and "New World" music, reflecting the talents and backgrounds of its composers. Iva Davies hails from both pop and classical traditions; Richard Tognetti, one of the world's great violin virtuosos, taught Russell Crowe the ins and outs of the instrument; and film/television composer Christopher Gordon brought orchestral texture to the project. Given the period, it comes as no surprise that the score is infused with source music from Bach (Cello Suite) and Mozart, among other great classical composers. Percussion dominates portions of the score. "Drums signal the forward movement of the ship," says Davies, "that it's on a mission. It brings you back into the action." The score's biggest surprise comes with its use of synthesizers. "Peter doesn't make films in the expected way," says Davies, "and for that reason we wanted the score to be not what everyone expected. Peter wanted some scenes to have what I call a kind of 'futuristic' sense"--conveying the idea that these 19th century sailors were cutting-edge explorers.Customer Reviews:

the music .......2006-11-10
Good incidental music but not great listening music - except the classical pieces.......2006-11-09
The second type of music is much more enjoyable to listen to. Those that have seen the film know there are several scenes in which people are playing music - for example, Aubrey and Maturin in the captain's cabin performing a cello-violin duet, or the sailors on deck playing sea shanties on tin whistles. The pieces chosen for the film range from Bach to traditional folk music, and are a welcome addition to the soundtrack. The performances are very good (including a cello solo by Yo Yo Ma), and the recording quality is excellent. Deserving special mention is the Boccherini piece (La Musica Notturna Delle Strada di Madrid), which serves as a second unofficial theme song for the movie. The piece itself is presented in its entirety, and there is a callback to the piece in the incidental music as well, which is a welcome ray of levity in an otherwise oppressive piece.
People purchasing this disc run the real risk of being disappointed - the incidental music works so well in the context of the film that you are likely to think (as I did) that the music is itself worth listening to alone. Unfortunately, I don't find this is the case, but the classical music that is included makes this a soundtrack worth having, especially for the Boccherini piece.
Great classical music accompanies bland original score.......2006-09-27

Guest-star projects can be such tiresome affairs. Too often, the high-profile "friend" is nothing more than the record label's idea of someone they can feature on the front cover to generate additional sales. Additionally, these performances are frequently overdubbed, so the artist and the guest never actually come in contact with each other. Thankfully, neither is the case on Walter Trout's first studio album of new material since 2001's Go the Distance. Not only has the hotshot guitarist worked and maintained friendships with these players, but they convened in the same studio at the same time to nail these tunes. Not surprisingly, the vast majority of Trout's friends are guitarists who--like him--prefer to charge through songs with the intensity of a salmon swimming upstream. Joe Bonamassa, Bernard Allison, Guitar Shorty, Jeff Healey, Junior Watson, and Coco Montoya all share guitar-duel duties, and while the results aren't exactly subtle, there's enough explosive firepower here to level a small building. Even an acoustic session with Eric Sardinas--a neighbor of Trout's--attacks like an unplugged Rory Gallagher on a hot Belfast night. John Mayall (keyboards/vocals), James Harman (harp), Finis Tasby (vocals), Deacon Jones (Hammond B3 organ), and Little Feat drummer Richie Hayward also bring their game faces, and sometimes songs, contributing to various tracks with energy and intensity. Trout plays with his usual all-stops-out bluster, but there is an obvious affection for his guests on every track, which both energizes and spurs him on to new heights on what is arguably his best and most diverse effort yet. --Hal HorowitzAlbum Description
With the release of FULL CIRCLE, Walter Trout has realized a long held dream - to invite musician friends from his 35+ year career together to compose and play together. His first new studio release in five years, FULL CIRCLE reflects Walter Trout's remarkable story, from his humble beginnings as a sideman in many a blues legends' band through his rising solo star, arriving as one of blues music's beloved interpreters. The project is a full circle in time and place, a journey through the range of styles that represent the blues music genre - a celebration of where the blues world is, where it has been and where it's going.
Among the 25 musicians appearing are John Mayall, Coco Montoya, Bernard Allison, Jeff Healey, Joe Bonamassa, Eric Sardinas, Guitar Shorty, Finis Tasby, Junior Watson, James Harman and Deacon Jones.
FULL CIRCLE is the most accomplished and satisfying release of Walter Trout's discography, and demonstrates his passion for music is just as great today as it was when he started playing as a teenager more than 35 years ago. He considers the new album a tribute to the people and the times that have helped shape his musical appreciation, demonstrating how the many styles within the blues genre can co-exist and mutually enhance each other without fight for rank or authenticity.

In an age when the old-timey soundtrack to O Brother, Where Art Thou? sells 5 million copies, it's hard to imagine how revolutionary Will the Circle Be Unbroken seemed upon its release 30 years ago. The triple album (now rereleased as a two-CD set) paired many of Nashville's venerable country and bluegrass performers (Roy Acuff, Mother Maybelle Carter, Earl Scruggs, Doc Watson, Merle Travis, Jimmy Martin, Vassar Clements) with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, or as Acuff called them, "a bunch of long-haired West Coast boys." The idea seemed nearly as foreign as Martians setting down in Tennessee, but the Dirt Band were Colorado hippies steeped in the genre, so there was no disputing the authenticity of the music, or its earthy appeal. Aside from the sheer joy of the performances (listen to Jimmy Martin's "whoop" on "Sunny Side of the Mountain"), there's great fun in hearing Roy Acuff give the boys a lesson in doing a song right the first time (and using the word hell before launching into a religious number). And Mother Maybelle wafts through like a benevolent ghost, or at least a patron saint. One caveat: The boast of four previously unreleased tracks is balderdash, since three are really between-track conversations and rehearsals, and only "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" qualifies as a real song. But that's nitpicking. Buy it. Love it. Wallow in it. O brother, that's country music! --Alanna NashCustomer Reviews:

I don't know, mate..........2007-05-29
Be honest- if you weren't familiar with the cast, it would just be another bluegrass album, no? It's just a hodgepodge of famous names, and very rarely do these all-star casts ever prove inspirational. Everyone seems to be enjoying everyone else's company, perhaps sipping a drink or two, and singing a few tunes here and there. Even Doc Watson sounds a little flat, save for "Black Mountain Rag." That should tell you something.
If you want FANTASTIC bluegrass, save your money. Buy a Kentucky Colonels or a Muleskinner record. Heck, buy an original album by any of these artists that have fire, inspiration, and are truly sensational.

Elton John doesn't seem like a natural choice to write for a Disney musical, but he rose to the task on The Lion King, transcending his usual penchant for the softest of soft rock. Sir Elton's collaboration with Tim Rice (former writing partner of Andrew Lloyd Webber) helps connect the soundtrack to the theatrical lineage of all Disney musicals--so much so that, like Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King was eventually adapted for Broadway. Undistinguished songs like "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" are far outnumbered by stirring, stately tunes that lent the film so much of its sense of pageant and play. --John SanchezCustomer Reviews:
fun but flawed.......2007-05-07
first off there's hans zimmer's score. his score is both powerful and moving. it brilliantly incorperates elements of local african music (provided and arranged by lebo m) these elements give it a great feeling of belonging not only to the film but to it's setting. without these tribal elements the score would have been far less compeling. one small problem is when the score abandons these elementsl; they're not carried through in all of the music. but its not enough to be a real distraction. the power of the score allows the listener to feel the wildabeast charging or smell the rain falling during the monsoon or experience the brilliance of the circle of life.
SCORE 5 out of 5
the songs had music by elton john and lyrics by tim rice. the following is a song-by-song breakdown.
THE CIRCLE OF LIFE - this is a great opening number with powerful vocals provided by carmen twillie and impressive african-inspired vocals in the beggining by lebo m. with the actual film, this is not only a moving but inspiring piece of cinema. even without, this is a great song that still gives me goose-bumps. this definately warranted its oscar nomination
5 out of 5
I JUST CAN'T WAIT TO BE KING - this is a really fun song by simba and nala along with zazu. its infectious beat and lyrics definately leave u humming. this may not be the most memorable song, but it definately captures the youth and innocence of simba at this point
5 out of 5
BE PREPARED - this is scar's big number so to speak. it features the hyenas in a very dark yet memorable song. the rhaspy vocals and wonderful musical arrangements make this a great piece that is both eery and impressive.
5 out of 5
HAKUNA MATATA - this is the second oscar nominated song, and although its fun buddy type number, it does get old and doesnt really age as well as the rest. this is honostly one of the weakest songs, believe it or not, its good but just cant really hold up to the other stronger pieces.
4 out of 5
CAN YOU FEEL THE LOVE TONIGHT - here it is, 1994's oscar winner for best original song. honostly i feel that the circle of life deserved that award, but here's the song that got it. the film's version is very romantic, especially for featuring a couple of lions, timon and pumba's parts are funny, but it is simba and nala's portion that takes it home. btw elton john's version at the end is a definate winner.
5 out of 5
SONGS OVERALL - 5 out of 5
so if the score gets 5 and the songs get 5, why does the album only get 4? the answer's pretty simple. for the first time since 1989 with the little mermaid, two composers helped on this film. one provided the film's score and one provided the music for the songs. because two composers worked on this, it feels a little incohesive at times. this isn't really noticible within the film but on the soundtrack it definately stands out. elton john and hans zimmer both did a great job and the only really saving factor are the african rhythms that they both used. although this is a great soundtrack, that lack of unity does bring it down.
despite that minor flaw, this is a must-own for any disney fan or music fan in general. this is a great soundtrack that ranks right up there with beauty and the beast and must never be forgotten.
Simply Perfect.......2007-04-09
Great Album!.......2007-03-31
Wonderful, if only for the instrumentals.......2007-02-14
Wonderful Soundtrack.......2006-11-16
The "extras" for this Special Edition include a mild and unnecessary remix of "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" and "The Morning Report," which is included on the Special Edition DVD release. Neither add to the collection, but it is nice to have "The Morning Report" on the disc.
Overall, this is one of Disney's strongest soundtracks. In my personal list, I rank it in second place behind Phil Collins' wonderfully tribal "Tarzan" soundtrack. If you don't already have the "Lion King" soundtrack, I highly suggest that you purchase this special edition copy if you are a true fan of the film or of Disney soundtracks in general.
Highly recommended.

Maynard James Keenan is known for venting his personal angst through the abstract metal of his former band Tool and the poisoned art rock of his current outfit A Perfect Circle. On the group's third full-length release, however, the songwriter drops the high drama and gets blunt: War is bad. Politicians are evil. The world is doomed. To support his case he delivers a handful of politically charged originals and unusual Eastern-influenced covers of crusty anti-war anthems like John Lennon's "Imagine" and Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On." You could never accuse Keenan of being predictable. --Aidin VaziriAmazon.com

None.......2007-07-31
I'm glad I didn't pay for this garbage........2007-07-13
This CD is NOT a contradiction of the past of Maynard's creative identity, but it is stinky.......2007-06-16
First, I have a couple of things to touch on.
Using Tool's "Learn to swim" as an excuse to say the CD is inconsistant with what Maynard has written in the past, isn't a valid argument. That song is his attempt at waking those up whom he wants to see swim.
There's such an incredible amount of people who acknowledge the world's insanities and don't do a thing about them. Nothing at all. To them, he says learn to swim. To those superficial individuals content in living an extremely materialistic life, he says learn to swim. This CD doesn't contradict that belief, on the contrary, it enforces it only in the same vein of wanting people to wake up. ESPECIALLY, when they hear the song AEnima and go along, paying for [...] jobs, scientology, and feeding into an incredible cycle of fear. His passion pooped this CD out, his passion pooped Aenima out. There's no different types of poops. Poop is poop, Maynard is Maynard.
He's not contradicting his beliefs or messages, he's reinforcing them and making them clearer in this CD- especially to the individuals incapable of deciphering and comprehending the complexities and metaphors in AEnima. If a person is told to learn to swim, you can take two routes: Literally (Learn to swim in water) or metaphorically (Learn to swim in the TRUE reality of horror in this world). If you can't "learn to swim", not only are you refusing to see the world for what it is, but you're becoming a slave to a brainwashed culture. You're not human, you're not independant, you're a drone and deserve to die. It's harsh, but true.
. . . There is no contradiction except by the individuals who are content in finding and using something to rile up negativity. And fear. Hell, Maynard is on Rage Against The Machine's first CD (1992) shouting, "I've got no patience now, so sick of complacence now. I've got no patience now, so sick of complacence now. Sick of sick of sick of sick of you. Time has come to pay!" No contradiction on this eMOTIVE, pure Maynard.
Listening to A Perfect Circle and Tool won't make you blind, it will only attempt to open your eyes. Maynard James Keenan is one of the greatest lyricists in history and one can't possibly accuse him of contradicting his creative identity when he's reinforced it in so many ways- ways in which he won't change so those incapable of actually working and listening can see. He's stubborn, but the best artists are.
In Passive, Maynard wails, "Wake up and face me, don't play dead." He's singing that to the world, and it has to be f*cking frustrating to have so many people misinterpret what he has to say. Especially when they twist it into making people "Blind". Hence, in Passive, "'Cause maybe someday I'll walk away and say- You f*cking disappoint me." I'd be disappointed too.
That all stemmed from a review and comments I read on here agreeing with it. And, WELL, after saying and ranting about that, I'll get to the CD.
This CD isn't in the same vein as any other A Perfect Circle CD and there is a chance that if you're a big a fan of their first two CDs, you won't like it. No song really sounds the same, but that is mostly because of Maynard's task of taking a song and completely redoing it. If you heard the songs' original versions, and liked them, you might not like this.
I'm actually a fan of this CD, if you couldn't tell already. Though, this was the first A Perfect Circle CD I heard and I'll be honest- I hated it. So, so, so, so much. Though, a year later I got their first two CDs and they became my favorite band. Really. Then, well, I crawled toward this one scared and was delightfully surprised how much I liked it. So, compared to how much I didn't like it, it's a good CD. But, seeing it from the perspective of a person not obsessed with A Perfect Circle, it isn't the best CD they have.
Gimme Gimme Gimme highlights the world's faith in the insane, it's one of the best songs. Passive IS the best song on this CD. Imagine is a close second and is almost better than the original. MAYBE it is, but I might be too scared to admit that. What's Going On can be the fourth best song on here. Counting Bodies Like Sheep is a remake of their song Pet, and, well, I'm not that large of fan, but it can be sixth best, just because . . . Gimme Gimme Gimme is number five. All the rest, I can't say I'm a HUGE fan of. But, if you listen long enough, eMOTIVE grows on you.

Here we go again with yet another compilation of soundtrack excerpts and vaporous ditties, to be filed under "Celtic" and pronounced, one assumes, with a soft "c." Some of the selections, such as those featuring old hands like Loreena McKennit, Sinead O'Connor, Clannad, the Corrs, and the Chieftains, actually merit the moniker. But how a pair of embarrassingly twee tunes by David Arkenstone and Vangelis (!) made the cut is anyone's guess. Other choices of dubious provenance include Annie Haslam and Steve Howe's cover of an already hoary Yes tune, a squirm-inducing bit of overkill called "Elysium" (by Elysia, whoever that may be,) and Ryan and Rachel O'Donnell's flaccid reworking of Enya's "May It Be" from Lord of the Rings. "Hedwig's Theme" from the OST to Harry Potter also appears, courtesy of the City of Prague Philharmonic, even though the books never so much as hinted at the owl's nationality. --Christina RodenCustomer Reviews:

Music from a Mystic World.......2005-12-23
Apparently, some think that only the Irish are Celts and only Irish music is Celtic. This is very inaccurate. Scotland is named for the Scots who came for IRELAND!!! The original inhabitants of Scotland were the Picts, who by the way were also Celts as are the Welsh and the Bretons of Brittany in France. Broadly, Celtic music can originate in Ireland, Scotland, Wales or Brittany. The problem seems to be that some folks wanted traditional Irish music, but the category of Celtic seems to be broadening in much the same way that Country Music has become broader than it was 40 years ago. I couldn't stand the old Country whiney music and still can't, but the newer country music is much more appealing. Stars like Garth Brooks stretched the narrow boundaries and appealed to much wider groups.
Enya has done the same with Celtic music. It is not traditional Irish reels, jigs, and the like, but it isn't simply New Age, either. She has successfully blended the two, leaving her music with a Celtic heart. This album stretches the boundaries, but it stays to the theme of a mystic world. It does not stray far from Celtic roots. I do not believe that is in any way misrepresented.
Concerning the reviewer that complained that they already had many of these tracks. That is not a problem with this 2 CD set. It is YOUR problem. You should have looked at the tracks before buying! I only have one duplication of the 31 tracks and that is because I also have the LOTR soundtrack. I do not mind having the repeated track as when I play this set, I get a very different mix than when the track is played in the context of the soundtrack. The change of context does affect the way in which the piece is heard. It works well in this compilation of mystic inspired tunes. So does "Hedwig's Theme." While Hedwig's nationality is not known, the entire premise of Harry Potter seems more Druidic Celtic than Anglo-Saxon. The reviewer that made the wry crack about including "Hedwig's Theme" apparently did not read the subtitle to the album. That explains the inclusion of this great piece of music by Williams. Oh, by the way, Williams is a common Welsh (CELTIC) name.
If you are looking for traditional Irish music, than this album may disappoint. If you are looking for mystical music with a Celtic soul, then this album should delight. To be sure, listen to some of the tracks first, but don't let the negative reviews of some dissuade you from purchasing without listening first. I thoroughly enjoy this set and feel that I got exactly what I expected when I bought it. I would also highly recomment it to others.

Shadow's Word - The Celtic Circle: Legendary Music from a Mystic World.......2005-08-26
To begin, this CD is not truly "Celtic." Celtic music comes from the land of Ireland and I found that some of this music does not originate from here. Don't get me wrong, it's good music, just falsly catagorized.
Other than that, it is good music, however I feel it may have been better titles "The Mystic's Circle" or something along those lines. It contains music from excellent artists and has addictive and relaxing songs on this CD. Some from movies as excellent as the songs (i.e. The Mists of Avalon).
If you want a good relaxation CD that is not quite instrumental yet has angelic like voices, this would be a good choice. Two discs, 31 songs brings a good relaxation and meditation session to clear's one's body, mind, and spirit. Though that it may be wrongly labeled in my opinion, it is still an excellent CD with excellent music.

Crackling with hypnotic energy, Otis Taylor's eighth album infuses his cutting-edge blues with a dose of rock'n'roll exuberance. The blasting opener "Little Betty" gets some rocket fuel from blues-rock legend Gary Moore's marvelously expressive, raw guest guitar as well as from drummer John Kelly, whose propulsion ignites several of these dozen tunes. Ultimately, though, Taylor's one-chord magic comes from his knack for repeating catchy riffs until they become a seductive blur--a hip-shaking platform for his colorful explorations of love, war, joy, deprivation, and racial struggle. He's also got a way with textures, spinning dirty guitar, prickly electric mandolin, his daughter Cassie's haunting alto singing, and his own appealingly hoarse baritone into mesmeric arrangements for tunes like the Hurricane Katrina contemplation "They Wore Blue" that owe as much to Pink Floyd as to Muddy Waters. Taylor also pushes the envelope hard with "Long Long Life," which blends jazz star Hiromi Uchara's manic piano improvisations with Ron Miles's free-form cornet as Taylor intones a curse on a disdainful lover. It's a brilliant collision of styles and yet another fiery testimonial to Taylor's unique artistic vision. --Ted DrozdowskiCustomer Reviews:
Deep Blues for the 21st Century.......2007-07-16
Now what does that mean? Otis does not follow convention. Consider the instruments used here, many from the past: electric cello; cornet; mandolin; lap steel and banjo - not your typical blues band!
Do you like more modern blues and rock, that's mixed in here too and is my favorite part of the new CD. European rock and blues guitar master Gary Moore (former Thin Lizzy member and now bluesman supreme, though not well known in the states) on overdriven electric guitar.
No one that I listen to except for Otis Taylor mixes these elements together, then Otis adds his deeply felt lyrics and vocals (with background by daughter Cassie and "Operatic Vocals" by others - see, there's another examples of far ranging influences).
Otis Taylor Band - part Jam Band, part Trance, part history lesson, part World Music, all BLUES. This compelling music gets better with each listen. Thanks to XM radio, I heard a few cuts repeated before buying the CD. Love it.
