This collection of favorites sung by Dean Martin will provide much enjoyable listening to fans. The songs are among his most popular and most familiar and are definitely mellow ! Good value for the price.

When the moon hits your eye.......2007-03-16

Depending on your age when you first heard that line, the theatre of your mind may color this famous line from one of Dean Martin's greatest songs. Just to hear the way the orchestra swells as he croons these tunes brings back pleasant memories. Growing up in suburban Chicago - who wouldn't want to be Italian, and who wasn't, hearing those great songs of yesteryear. Songs with lyrics you could understand the first time you heard them, and with a melody that made you want to take your girlfriend in your arms and swirl around the dance floor. Where can you find that today?

Dino sure could croon.......2006-11-08

yes, this is a "budget" CD, but there are some great selections here. This CD features Dino "crooning" as opposed to "swinging". For that I would suggest you pick up a copy of "Swinging With Dino", which has more big band type arrangments to accompany him. But this one has songs like "That's Amore", "Volare", "Sway", and "Standing On The Corner". If you get both of them, I think you will have a good overview of his music, the only cut on both of them is "You're Nobody Till Somebody Loves You". This guy knew how to sing and carry a tune.

Great to learn what Dean Martin is all about........2006-09-30

This CD consists of Dean Martin's best songs and is a very good way to learn what Dino is all about. Listen to "That's Amore", "Volare" and my personal favorite "Sway", and my prediction is that you will fall in love with Dean (Dean's voice). For old time fans, I would recommend you to buy the multi-CD or more complete version (more songs) like "The Essential Dean Martin" or "That's Amore" etc.

Sixties surf music.......2005-08-15

Jan Berry and Dean Torrence made music that was very similar in many ways to the early Beach Boys music. Actually Jan often collaborated with Brian Wilson on songwriting - Surf city, Drag city, Dead man's curve and Ride the wild surf being among the songs they wrote together. Further evidence of their close ties is provided here by the inclusion of several covers of Beach Boys classics. Although not included here, Barbara Ann (originally released on the Beach Boys Party album) features one member of Jan and Dean as lead singer - I've seen different reference source naming Jan or Dean so I can't say which one.

Jan and Dean's music was about more than just surfing as some of their other recordings (Linda, Heart and soul, a cover of Norwegian wood) but if you don't enjoy surf music, you won't find much to get excited about here. The duo's career ended abrubtly when Jan nearly died in a horrific accident. He recovered sufficiently to be able to record again in the seventies but was unable to recapture past glories. Meanwhile, Dean quit music and established a successful career in graphics design, though Jan and Dean re-united to provide the support act for the 1978 Beach Boys tour.

If you enjoy the early music of the Beach Boys, you'll probably enjoy this too, especially as Brian Wilson contributed so much tothese recordings.

Amazing CD Amazing Man Amazing Music.......2006-04-16

this CD is great such great music! as soon as i heard Dean Martin i loved him. there is nobody better!

Dino.......2004-09-12

"DINO" is by far the better album here, released in 1972. "The Small Exception of Me" "I Can Give You What You Want Now" and "I Don't Know What I'm Doing" are just beautifully sung. Kris Kristofferson also penned two strong songs "Just The other Side Of Nowhere" & "Kiss The World Goodbye". I had the "DINO" LP & it never sounded better. "You're The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me" was brand new for me. I only liked five songs off this LP, but they are keepers!! The title ballad is a cover of a gold record by Gladys Knight. By far, the best song is "Free To Carry On". Wow, now that's a pretty song. The album (which was released in late 1973 & his last LP until 1978's "Once in a While") ends with another upbeat Dean Martin/Jimmy Bowden classic "Get on With Your Livin'". You won't be disappointed with these two mature albums. I'm Lovin' it!

Often overlooked, but great!.......2003-05-25

These two albums were late in Dino's career, and as a result often overlooked. The hits were in the past, but this album has some really nice modern country arrangements. "What's Yesterday" is unique and a bit mysterious. "Party Dolls & Wine" has a hard beat to it that's infectious. For me the best cut is "Kiss The World Goodbye" by Kristofferson -- somehow it sums up what Dean might have been thinking at the end of his life. There are very fine versions of "Free To Carry On", "You're The Best Thing To Happen To Me", and great updates to "I'm Confessing", "Baby Won't You Please Come Home", "I Don't Know Why", and "Gimmie A Little Kiss". I grew to hate "Tie A Yellow Ribbon", but Dean's light version is rather pleasant. This is a definite Dino album to get if you like pop country.

Dino/ You 're the Best Thing.......2003-04-18

With the exception of Tie A Yellow Ribbon ....this is one of the best in the two fer series. My favorite song is Free To Carry On.

Excellent Billy Dean.......2007-05-12

This is an amazing collection. If you like Billy Dean you will love this. If you are new to Billy Dean I'm sure you will become an ardent fan. It has something for everyone. I definitely recommend this to all.

A great overview of Billy's Capitol Recordings from the 90s.......2005-03-29

Lanky Billy Dean's 1990-98 Capitol/Liberty Records tenure had been previously anthologized with three skimpy ten-track sets (Greatest Hits, Love Songs, Certified Hits), all of which overlapped greatly and left off key hits. Fortunately, revived interest in Dean's music - thanks mainly to his current top ten Curb Records' hit "Let Them Be Little" - has prompted Capitol to finally assemble a decent retrospective, the aptly titled The Very Best Of Billy Dean.

This 17-track set includes all of Dean's top 40 country hits as well as his admirable rendition of "Yesterday" from the out of print 1995 cd Come Together: America Salutes the Beatles. It reminds how effective Dean's clear, folky baritone is at conveying sincerity, particularly on simple, matter of fact ballads like "Somewhere In My Broken Heart," "You Don't Count The Cost," and "Only The Wind." There are also plenty of uptempo gems to be found here, such as the nostalgic "Billy The Kid," the sassy "That Girl's Been Spying On Me," and a cover of Dave Mason's "We Just Disagree." But slow and poignant is what Dean does best, and in fact, better than most in modern country music.

A particularly pleasing Dean Martin collection which nicely balances the familiar with the seldom heard. There are many unexpected finds here, like the engaging "Grazie, Prego, Scusi" (manners do count), the sonorous "On The Street Where You Live", "My Rifle, My Pony And Me" which was a highlight of the film Rio Bravo (here sung with a male chorus), and the delightful "Tik A Tee, Tik A Tay", a snappy Italian number which is apparently only available elsewhere in a humongous Bear Family set costing well over $200.

More familiar pieces include the charming and breezy "On An Evening In Roma", the witty "Baby, It's Cold Outside", "Standing On The Corner" sung with a bit of attitude, and Roger Miller's masterpiece "King Of The Road".

Love songs, Italian numbers, old standards, humorous ditties, country fare---Dino's voice, deep and rich and expressive, smoothly weaves its way through a satisfying range of styles.


Dean Martin is said to have told a reporter once, "I'm really no singer." Give a listen to this CD---you'll quickly agree the fellow was fibbing.

Great sequel to earlier volume.......2003-02-18

Dean Martin had two separate hit-making periods - in the fifties with Capitol and in the sixties with Reprise. The early sixties were not successful in the charts, although Dean continued to record albums and was also kept busy in other ways. You would normally have to buy his Capitol and Reprise recordings separately. This is the second British CD spanning both.

Many of the songs that are associated with Dean are to be found on the first volume, so if you are thinking of buying this, you should either own that already or buy the two together. There are many excellent songs here, but it makes no sense to buy this except as a companion to the first.

Standing on the corner and Send me the pillow that you dream on are two songs that perhaps ought to have been included on the first volume - when that was released there was no certainty of a sequel - but their appearance here demonstrates the strength in depth of Dean's musical legacy.

This set shows the wide range of songs that Dean recorded, including Latin, French, Italian and country songs - all adapted to Dean's easy-going style. On an evening in Roma, another song that might have been on the first volume, opens proceedings and shows Dean's Italian roots.

Dean was well capable of putting his own identity on classic songs from a variety of sources, including You belong to me (Jo Stafford), On the street where you live (Vic Damone), Baby its cold outside (Margaret Whiting), Mambo Italiano (Rosemary Clooney), King of the road (Roger Miller) and I take a lot of pride in what I am (Merle Haggard).

This is an outstanding collection of Dean's music and makes a great companion to the first volume, which I've already reviewed.

Make no mistake, Dean Martin was probably one on the coolest persons ever to live. My son, who likes Rob Zombie and Green Day even likes Dean Martin. This is an awesome four CD box set that contains some of Dean's finest work. The sound quality is excellent and the selections are great. If you enjoy Dean Martin, you must get this set right away!

From start to finnish, all the tracks on this collection are classics. As another reviewer said, Dean always seemed to live in Franks shadow, and not justly so - Dean is, at the end of the day, much better, and his hit material is of a much higher standard. This CD is a true must for anyone. Great songs, great musicians and arrangers, and the greatest male singer of all time!

Since I originally wrote this review, a new compilation (Essential) has been released, containing all but two of the tracks here.

Dean Martin had two separate hit-making periods - in the fifties with Capitol and in the sixties with Reprise. The early sixties were not successful in the charts, although Dean continued to record albums and was also kept busy in other ways. You would normally have to buy one album to get his Capitol music and another to get his Reprise music. This collection spans both periods, although there is also a second volume, so you may end up buying two CD's anyway.

This collection contains most of the songs that are associated with Dean, including Memories are made of this, That's amore, Volare, You're nobody till somebody loves you, In the chapel in the moonlight, Houston and Everybody loves somebody. Dean's first solo hit, Powder your face with sunshine, is also included. It was no match for Evelyn Knight's version, which was number one for many weeks, but it was a start. Evelyn was at the peak of her career while Dean was just beginning.

Dean is often compared to Frank Sinatra, but their music was quite different. I enjoy both of them in different ways. While Frank's music was rooted in the big band sound of the late thirties, Dean's was altogether more relaxed - Dean was the classic crooner. In the sixties, his music took on a country flavor. It was never country enough for him to establish credibility amongst diehard country music fans, but for those who enjoy both pop and country music, Dean's sixties music is particularly appealing. Dean does not twang, so a lot of people who don't like country music can still enjoy his music.

Prior to the release of Essential, this was the strongest collection of Dean's music that had been released. If you intend to buy volume two, you may still prefer this to Essential, otherwise I now recommend you buy Essential (which has 30 tracks) instead.
