Good for what it is, however narrow........2006-11-09

The Absolute Sound has been a premiere audiophile rag for decades. If you are one, you already know them. If not, then there is only a small chance their magazine will be useful to you. They have another publication for home theatre, "Perfect Vision" which has far broader appeal these days. SACD is the format for this disk. Many of them are pressed in "hybrid" for use on conventional CD players. SACD is a significant improvement on the CD, which initially promised "perfect sound forever".

Telarc is a particularly high quality label that supports SACD. They have a fine list of recordings that extends far beyond these chestnuts.

To appreciate this improvement you need to have a SACD player. So the best use of this disk is to bring it with you to different audio stores to audition their equipment. Over time it functions as a reference disk, or benchmark, as you compare different sound systems.

Because it has only bleeding hunks of well known classical music, it has little other value unless you are interested in classical music but have little experience of it. In that case it may serve as a sampler to lead you to buy complete recordings of these selections. But again you need the SACD player, which you may already have if you are a jazz or rock audiophile. Otherwise, pass it by.

dufus has been compared favorably and often to both Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band and to Frank Zappa, but also to Mr. Bungle & Ween, for whom they recently opened, and even to Modest Mouse side-project Ugly Casanova. And like these previous bands, within the music is a severe tension in constant jeopardy of hurtling out of control: aggressive & nurturing, chaotic & structured, solitary & social, and, of course, anti & folk—dufus is all these things. I once heard Suicide described as "dumb-genius" and while I felt the comment unfair it came close to describing the visceral content of Suicide. The same goes here. It is genius, yet there is something so pure about this album, something so subconscious that one gets the feeling it has arrived directly from the womb of some large and intricate beast.

This album changed my life. Literally. "Donnah Mattr" convinced me to quit my 9-5 office job, pack up my things, and leave NYC to pursue my art somewhere out in the hills. I've never looked back...

i'm so glad people still take the time to make original music. the market is so saturated with the same old thing it's hard to find "real" music out there. the business people, who are very good at what they do, are always going to take their money and be safe. why would they gamble on some lanky guy with a strange voice that dresses in yarn?
if you've found this record you're one of the lucky ones. keep listening until you find all pop radio for what it is: just another un-clever, unwanted commercial.

Does Roir seem to release some fun music or what?It might be tough to describe Dufus's music.'1:3:1' features fourteen quite 'entertaining' tracks.I guess one MIGHT call '1:3:1' out-of-control,friendly,humorous,foward and a bit challenging.The best cuts are "Jahflooey",the witty "More Girl Cops",the acoustic,yet quirky "Deepr N Lov","Making Go Crazy/Real" and "Fire".Wanted to mention that there are also a couple of tunes here that are just down right strange,"Little Bitta Reggae" and "Wooden Ghost Stuff".Dufus is music for misfits and outcasts of the world today.Sounds sort of like maybe Frank Zappa(R.I.P.) with a couple of members of Gong backing him up.Should appeal to fans of Mothers Of Invention,Captain Beefheart and Ween.

I can not believe how deeply this album rocked me. It
was like all the questions in my life had come to a
breaking point, the dam busted, and dufus was the
flood which ensued. There are some people in this
world who are normal, some who are good, some who are
exceptional, and some who go beyond any expectation
you could ever have. Those are the people who get called
angels or saints or prophets of peace. These
people, whoever they are, they dont know the difference
between dream and reality, they have no idea what they
are doing. it is amazing!

I have little to add to the previous review of this CD, but I did want to say that the above tracklisting neglects to include the names of the artists...what Amazon has provided is only the name of the song and the album from which the track was taken. The first track is by Raphael, Aurora is by Giles Reaves, Earth Prayer is from Bill Douglass, tracks 4 and 6 are by Robert Rich, Mychael Danna does Deirdre of the Sorrow, Beguiled is from Tim Story, Steve Roach and Robert Rich collaborate on Soma, and the CD concludes with Paul Averinos.

Great compilation.......2000-10-23

This is a very satisfying compilation of space music and gets heavy rotaton in my cd player. This would be perhaps the perfect cd for exploration of good ambient artists, especially if you are new to this type of music. It is a thoughtfully compiled selection of nine tunes that fit together like pieces of a puzzle. There may be one or two tracks here that don't appeal to you a lot, but given the fact that this is a well polished compilation, it is guaranteed that there are other tunes that will make up for that.

Excellent Music.......2000-07-09

As a double-bass player, I must say that these pieces are challenging to play, yet are very fluent. My personal favorite is sonata #3, and all parts thereof. Any serious or aspiring bass and cello player should at least try to pick up the music for these pieces and give it a shot. Needless to say, those who do not play an instrument will find the music engrossing, to say the least. This is a must-buy CD for any fan of classical music.

It's Not Too Late to Discover Frank Hewitt.......2006-04-20

The two previous recordings that posthumously introduced the jazz community outside the Smalls inner circle to Frank Hewitt were trio studio recordings. "Four Hundred Saturdays", is the first opportunity for those of us not fortunate to be present for one of Hewitt's regular Smalls appearances to hear him in a live setting. It is also our first opportunity to hear him with horns. The language Hewitt spoke was unmistakably bebop. Here, Hewitt and his cohorts stretch out on four tunes that might have been played regularly during bebop's heyday. Although these performances were recorded in 1999, in the case of Hewitt the music feels like it is being played by someone who actually lived it, as opposed to studying it decades later. His piano playing is somewhat quirky. To these technically untrained ears he mastered his own dialect that was logical and technically impressive. One critic described Hewitt's playing as something which would be most appreciated by "insiders", but IMO if you listen and allow yourself to feel the music, Hewitt can and will be understood and thoroughly enjoyed by those like myself who could not tell you which notes should be played in a particular chord if my life depended on it. In addition to Hewitt, the two saxophonists (tenor saxophonist Chris Byars and alto saxophonist Mike Mullins) contribute impressive solos throughout, and the rhythm section (bassist Ari Roland and drummer Jimmy Lovelace) is rock solid and in sync throughout. Easily recommended.

Overhyped.......2006-03-19

Frank Hewitt has been receiving alot of publicity lately as an overlooked gem. After listening to this disc, I am not sure where this comes from. His solos do little for me. He doesn't really seem to be going anywhere and at times, appears to get kind of lost. Whatever his ideas may be, they get lost in lengthy statements that, basically, ramble and sometimes stumble.

There is some decent ensemble work here, and Ari Roland on bass and tenorman Chris Byers do some nice soloing. But the overall effect is so so, particularly since the leader disappoints.

I happen to be a student of Michael Newman and learning from him is simply an amazing experience. I bought this album and the only thing that bothers me is that not enough people are hearing just how great this album is.

My favorite track is "Please Sit Down", which I have a hard time shutting off. The album-titled song "If You Can't Dream" is another favorite of mine. I can go on about how much I enjoy listening to this album, but do yourself a favor and buy it; then you'll know what I mean.

Confessions of a Frustrated Music Critic.......2001-01-24

One of the pitfalls of being a music critic is the never ending stream of pathetic music sent to you to review. That being said, I must admit that the day I received this album, I knew that I had come accross real talent. Michael Newman is a "local" of the area who shares his talent by teaching music. What makes this album great is its freshness. This is not just another "rip-off." It blurs the line between blues and rock in a unique manner that retains a free-spiritness. The beauty of this album is that no one song dominates. This is a true "album" in its purest sense, not just another single with ten filler songs. I highly recommned this album to the music fan fed up with the state of music today.
