Album Description

If reggae music is the heartbeat of the Caribbean, then soca is the pulse. Created by the late Ras Shorty I in 1973, "Soca" is short for the "soul of calypso." It is a unique hybrid of Caribbean instrumentation and bangra/chutney beats, bridging the two major ethnic groups of Trinidad and Tobago--the African and the East Indian. Layered over the driving kick drum and bubbling bass lines are syncopated up-tempo chutney beats accentuated by militant snare stabs. These sounds can get any crowd moving and cause a sea of people to wave their rags--a Trinidadian favorite!
