Sweet suite music.......2007-06-07

Mike Rowland's music is so much better when performed by the Sylvan Strings (with Kate Williams at piano) than when rendered by synthesizer. There's no comparison. This music absolutely requires the woody, plaintive depth of violins to keep it from turning to acoustical pancake syrup.
Try and see. Listen to the Silver Wings samples, then listen to the Silver Wings Suite samples.

This CD is incredibly beautiful and relaxing......I use it to get into a relaxing and/or meditative state. The orchestral rendition of Mike Rowland's work adds depth and incredible fullness. I'd recommend massage therapists use it while giving massages. I'm about to order 2 more to give as gifts.

Cathartic Experience.......2000-11-03

This has to be one of the most cathartic, relaxing and beautiful pieces of music that I have ever listened to. The first time I heard this was in a health food store and immediately asked what was playing...when I got home and played it alone, I started to cry - that's how much it moved me. Now, several years later, I listen to it and it immediately starts me on the road to a beautfiul meditation. I always feel better after listening to this.

Nice Selection.......2004-11-28

This is a nice selection of Sousa music. While I much prefer a military band to play these works, this orchestra does a spirited job. Under Keith Brian the interpretations are inspired. There is also a lot of material not often played, including many overtures, dances, novelties, etc. Sousa should be remembered for far more besides his many excellent marches. His works spanned the entire globe of music, and he was a far more versatile composer than posterity has given him credit for. This excellent budget series by Naxos deserves a lot of credit for putting on these many fine CDs of of his works.

Infinite variety.......1999-12-29

I first heard a track from this album on BBC Radio 3: it was Treble Bob, Sixteen In, and it was magical. But when I came to hear the whole album, it is thematically all over the place. Beautiful ringing, but it doesn't seem sure of its audience.

I'd love to hear an album entirely like Treble Bob, Sixteen In - changes rung on handbells. It would be a wonderful meditation background.

A cross-section of handbell ringing in England.......1999-02-25

This recording includes contributions by four handbell ensembles in England, all very different. For the most part, the CD consists of English folk tunes, carols, and change ringing. The change ringing group is well worth a listen, as it is the latest incarnation of the ancient art form that made England the "Ringing Isle." The other ensembles very much reflect the "community band" concept, with all that entails: much enthusiasm and excitement, but rough around the edges. For the collector, though, this is an important piece of handbell ringing history and well worth having.
