5 out of 5 stars What a wonderful cd.......2006-05-16

If you love Journey, you will love this cd by Jon Cain. What a wonderful way to relax and unwind from a long day. Also a wonderful way to set a relaxing evening with the one you love!!! A must if you LOVE Jon Cain!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Very Nice...........2003-10-27

Probably the smoothest and most enjoyable Jazz piano CD I have ever heard. Great for relaxing or a romantic evening.

4 out of 5 stars The melodic renderings of Johnathon Cain.......2002-04-25

This recording has a melodic clarity that is indeed soul stirring. It is an example of simple melodies blended to form a profound tapestry of timeless music.

5 out of 5 stars The jonathan cain album to have!.......2001-05-21

Journey keyboardist/songwriter's instrumental composition at it's fullest!

You'll never get tired of this album. Some tracks are romantic some are just full of energy. Of all the cain albums this one is the one to get.

If you love new age/ jazz keyboard work with heavy emphasis on melody this is a Jonathan cain album you wont be dissapointed with. This is the side of him that cannot be easily expressed in a band, but always was with him.

My favorite track is #2. Listen to it.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best new age records of the 90's!.......1999-11-03

I heard this CD for the first time in a local store and immediately knew I had to have it! I am buying this CD a second time as a replacement. I have listened to this CD no less that 30 times and have never grown tired of it. It will remain a permanent member in my music collection.

5 out of 5 stars Gem.......2006-04-20

Listeners looking for categories should avoid this album but they should avoid any kind of music demanding your attention and concentration. Meredith Monk is NOT a pop musician, this is very idiosyncratic and beautiful because it leads you into a new universe. Her extraordinary vocal technique is enchanting and amazing becuase it opens your mind onto something new and unexpected. If you're ready for a new musical experience, if you're interested in new musical horizons, if you're not a consumer of music, you should go on a journey with Meredith Monk because your imagination will lead you towards pictures of dreams, dance and daring. This is musical poetry at its best.

1 out of 5 stars A Lover of Music.......2004-02-19

I have listened to a great many things, and believe that I can appriciate many forms of music, from traditional and classical styles, to pop, to new age. I like most of what I hear. Having said that, I have never heard anything as absolutely terrible as this album. This is the exact opposite of music. Music is supposed to make you feel something or move you in some way on some level. This album fails that miserably. The only thing I felt was a headache, which was self induced by slamming my head against a wall to try to block out the noise, for that is all that Turtle Dreams really is, noise. It is simple chord progressions accompanying various vocal screeches, pops, and whistles, all incoherant, and terribly out of tune. You can't sleep to it, you can't even think while it is in the same room as you, all you can do is wish that it was over. Do not buy this CD, do not check out this CD, do not recommend this CD to a friend unless they did something to really make you mad. Avoid this like the plague, or wish for a plague to come down upon you and remove you from this world before you remove yourself.

5 out of 5 stars .........2001-01-13

if you plan on purchasing this album, first listen to it while sleeping at night..over and over. this album is quite good and altered the way i listen to music.

5 out of 5 stars Dreamy masterpiece.......2000-12-15

Being introduced to Meredith Monk was one of the smartest things I have ever done. A friend of mine knew who she was and had me listen to her late one night. Needless to say I was blown away. I don't consider myself a 'singer' although I vocalize. I do not have any sweetness to my voice and don't write the norm. Well, Meredith Monk made me feel like an amature. I heard her and it was like the gates of music opened up. I absolutely fell in love with her. She made me realize that I don't have to sing like stinkin' Mariah Carey, who I do not care for anyway, and have a successful career. In my opinion, what Meredith Monk has done is more important than anything a pop singer could ever come close to. This album will make you happy. It will make you sad. It will make you dance. It does everything for the mind. If you think you can master singing in these styles you deserve an award. Like the many she has. If you also compose along with it than you need me to hear it because this is just heaven to me. Mentally and physically this should be heard. Especially for the passionate. If you like passion written in sound then do yoursalf a huge favor. Get one of her albums and shut down your life because this will bring you into something you should love.

    Album Description

Ariel View, from producer/pianist Bruce Hanifan and violinist Karen Bentley is a new, superbly recorded selection of tone poems for violin and piano from producer/pianist Bruce Hanifan and violinist Karen Bentley. This CD creates the perfect enviroment for a moment of romance or quiet meditation.

This project evolved out of spontaneous improvisations. We were both so inspired by the experiences that we were having as we played that we decided we had to share it with others. So we went into the studio for 2 weeks and came out with Ariel View.

5 out of 5 stars A Soulful Journey transported upon the Spirit of the Wind........2002-12-27

If you had command of a spirit to serve the most inner needs
of your heart and you utilized these powers to bring the most
inner peace possible into the every fiber of your being then
you might just get an idea of the ten cleansing pieces of
inspired collective music that encompass this CD.
Based on the character of the devoted servent spirit, "Ariel"
to his master's wishes, "Prospero" in William Shakespeare's
imortal classic, "The Tempest" the listner is given a fabric
of velvet sound that has been woven from the deep devotion
of Ariel's bountiful duty to his master for being set free
from the terrible afflicted imprisonment of a wicked witch
named Sycorax. Prospero, having freed Ariel from a 12 year
bondage in a pine tree, has Ariel and his powers join together
in a conditional dual alliance to help Prospero get justice
for himself and his daughter Miranda. They were banished to
this island by a brother who took advantange of Prospero's
position of Duke of Milan and had them become vanished so he'd
assume his brother's ruling position. Years later a "touch
of luck" voyage by his brother Antonio and numerous other enemies
of Prospero happen to be passing by the island. Properso
engages the powerful magic of Ariel to create a tempest and
snare them onto the island in isolated locations. One of the
voyager's is Ferdinand, the son of Alfonso, King of Naples,
who is cleverly led with song by an invisible Ariel to
Prospero's cave where he encounters Miranda and a love bonding
    occurs.
This is just some of the magic that Ariel is co-conspirator to
under Prospero's continuous efforts to set matters straight.
Now the music created by Karen Bentley on violin and Bruce
Hanifan on piano delves etherally into the soul of the spirit
of the winds, Ariel. Each title reflects on words that
appear in, The Tempest, and help us get a feel for what such a
devotional spirit could possibly be like. He is a prankster
as sorts but never in a vain and usurping manner; he follows
the commands on his master to the letter and waits for the
momment he can be totally free after his master's final bidding.
The opening piece, "gentle breath" is found in the closing
epilogue that Properso renders after setting Ariel free.
This music is tender, warm, and deeply heart felt as are all
the others on the CD. You can indeed "FREE YOUR MIND" with
this whole disc if you let Ariel's essence get into your
being and dispell out the worldly impurity that may have
built up inside you during a day in the so-called imprisioning
real world we all must face. Let your mind flow into the
simple gifts these two artists have woven for you. Indeed it
is as if the innocence of Miranda and Ferdinand's spirits
have transported in to Karen and Bruce. There is some really
subtle unity of hearts chemistry being unfolded with all this
music. "sands of the printless foot" has its inspiration in
Prospero's poetic vision of his invisible spirit servent singing
a magical song as he leads Ferdinand along the yellow sands
to finally reach Properso's cave. "in pearl eyes" appears in
the song Ariel sings to Ferdinand about his father as a vision
in the depths of the sea.
Each piece gives you marvelous mind imagery to mould a perfect
picture of the dynamic little sprite who will masterfully render
all the necessary elements to bring the captured participants
into full closure with Properso's poetic justice.
I really loved "in pearl eyes", "heart flight" "ariel view" because the melodies and structure touch or reflected on some
pre-conceived music in my head as if I'd heard it in another place or time; sort of a musical precognition.
Bruce enhenced "ariel view" with some sampled
processed sound and plenty of spatial depth to bring the greatest sonic pleasure for Karen's violin work in a tribute
to the spirit of the winds. This ethereal wonderworld is continued in "Sprirtual aparition". "Solemn Temple" is a phrase from Act
IV spoken by Prospero in his vision of the world and its
monuments all desolving along with time; All things shall Pass!
The real world is but an illusion and shall disappear while
the finer substance of our beings will continue to move on in
eternal soulgrowth. The acts and deeds we collect for ourselves
in this life will ultimately bear witness to the purity and
virtue of our soulgrowth. The Tempest is a statement of the
act of forgivivg and getting on with proper good-willed deeds
to be sowed in the mysterious migrations we call "Life".
Properso sets Ariel free and by his promise and seeks Ariel's
guidance back to Milan in the final Epilogue. Jesse's Joy, a special tribute to a endeared supporter of this work
delightful up-beat conclusion in a lilting jazz-waltz tempo
that gives an all encompassing feeling of the goodness
and the appreciation Ariel must have felt being totally
free like the bee. Karen and Bruce have given all of us
a perfect aural planting ground to plant and nurture our
own soul growth with thoughtful positive relections on the magic and allure of the free spirit, "Ariel.
This music is a must for peaceful meditation, ultra relaxation
and a sonic portrayal of what two souls can accomplish when
their hearts and gifts of talent blend in a spiritual oneness.

    Amazon.com essential recording

This reading of In Sleep, In Thunder has tenor Jon Garrison singing Carter's musical setting of six Robert Lowell poems. Speculum Musicae grasps the piece's broad-based low-end sweeps expertly, flanging when Garrison's voice seems to unlock and bellow. The music shudders as the tenor considers Lowell's lines, emphasizing the conflicted poetics with interjections that interrupt each other shatteringly. While the Lowell poems allow Carter a fairly costly emotional investigation of personality and conflict, A Mirror on Which to Dwell peeks in on the development of sonic characters, again taken on with snappy know-it-allness of musical directions this side of World War II. The music chases itself, with woodwind blurts shadowing fast-moving string slashes and percussive piano washes, all occasionally wafting into dusty quiet--a recessive sonic area that works wonderfully in relation to Elizabeth Bishop's texts. Very little in these pieces resolves itself, and the music's sum effect is a multiplicity of tonal characters that create their own space, all the while in uneasy proximity to the other spaces. With the Three Poems of Robert Frost (composed in 1942) moving with Patrick Mason's baritone bellow and Syringa sung by mezzo-soprano Katherine Ciesinski (texts by John Ashberry), the palette of tonal ranges and dynamic changes is extremely wide on this set. --Andrew Bartlett

    Album Description

Between 1975 and 1981, Elliot Carter produced his remarkable vocal trilogy: A Mirror on Which to Dwell, Syringa, and In Sleep, in Thunder. Bridge's CD marks the first integral recording of the three works, and also includes the premiere recording of Carter's 1980 orchestration, Three Poems of Robert Frost. These recordings were made under the composer's supervision, and feature Speculum Musicae, with whom Carter has worked closely during the past twenty years.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the most important collections of modern vocal music........1999-07-04

I like Andrew Bartlett's descriptions of "In Sleep, In Thunder" and "Mirror on Which to Dwell." As with every other musical form Carter has chosen to work in, the vocal works are among the most important in their genre for the second half-century. Bartlett doesn't talk much about "Syringa," though. In fact, it's the most original and striking work of the disc. Imagine a sort of film with a narrator calmly telling us the story of Orpheus in sort of hip modern jargon, but superimposed on the real thing--Orpheus passionately declaiming or agonizingly wailing, and all the while a little chamber orchestra is making wickedly flickering music. Everything happens simultaneously, as if we were in two or three worlds, eons apart, at the same time. This is Carter's chamber opera (in the sense that Kurtag's great "Samuel Becket: What is the Word" can be thought of as an opera), and until his new opera (composed last year at the age of 89)is released on disc, it's all we've got for a Carter opera.

Chandos Records has a wonderful way of pulling rabbits out of their hat. They're especially adept at finding--then aggressively advocating--neglected British composers of this century. Thomas Armstrong (1898-1994) is one such composer. This is an extraordinary collection of brief orchestral works (Sinfonietta), a piano quintet, several songs for baritone and/or soprano, and several pieces for a cappella choir. And there isn't a stinker in the bunch. Armstrong--as well as his father, A.E. Armstrong--was a lifelong music teacher and organist. At the Royal College of Music in 1922 he studied under Ralph Vaughan Williams. He's his own man, however, with nary a hint of Vaughan Williams anywhere. Armstrong's music is strongly romantic and rich with emotion. Credit, thought, should be given to Paul Daniel's helmsmanship of the usually stodgy London Philharmonic. They're absolutely alive here, making this release one of Chandos's best in many a moon. --Paul Cook

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful musical style.......2000-12-12

The music of Thomas Armstrong is pretty-well unknown outside of circles of professional musicians. However, if one appreciates the early 20th-Century English style of composition, known mostly through Vaughn-Williams and Holst, this is a wonderful next step to take. My personal favorites are the six short motets in the middle of the disc. "O Mortal Folk" is absolutely poignant. The title track of the album is quite a fun piece, wherein the composer uses rapidly changing time-signatures to give the feel of a sea journey with its changes of tide and weather. Though this is probably not music which will ever be relegated to the level of Bach and Brahms, it is a fun album, well played, that opens up the listener to one more world of compositional style.
