Electronic tunes at their best. Listen to this and chill. I still chill with this after all these years.

5 out of 5 stars Similar to Oxygene with slightly more of a rhythmic element.......2007-01-17

Following my discovery of Jean Michel Jarre sometime in 1985-ish with his Oxygene album from 1976, I immediately rushed out and got this 1978 release. Although it is nice to have this on CD (my record collection disappeared a long time ago), I do miss the old vinyl. At any rate, this is yet another excellent recording of electronic music by Jean Michel Jarre that more or less follows in the footsteps of the excellent Oxygene.

Stylistically, this music is closest to the "Berlin School" approach to electronic music, although this electronica is a bit cheerier and more accessible. Just like Oxygene, there is a multi-movement suite which unfolds over eight sections that range in length from 2'25" to 7'06". The movements combine brooding and spacey synth work with the occasional pulsating and synthetic rhythm (there are neither drums nor percussion on Equinoxe). Jean Michel uses a lot of the same analog equipment he used on Oxygene, along with a few instruments that were in vogue at the time including polyphonic synthesizers manufactured by Oberheim (TSV1), Yamaha (CS-60), and Korg (Korg Polyphonic Ensemble). Other synthesizers used on Equinoxe include the ARP 2600, EMS Synthi AKS synthesizer, EMS VCS3, RMI Harmonic synthesizer, ELKA X-707, along with the Eminent 310 organ, Novatron Mellotron 400, several sequencers, a "rhythmicomputer", and a vocoder. I especially like the tones he gets: they sound very organic and warm.

Together, these instruments are used to create electronic soundscapes that bubble, pulse, and brood - there is even a tiny bit of French folk music (played entirely on synths of course) on the closing track. Jean Michel has a good sense of melody and they are splashed liberally across the entire album. There is also a bit more in the way of a driving, rhythmic element that reminds me somewhat of Kraftwerk's output in the mid 1970s. On top of it all is his trademark phasing (just like that found on Oxygene), which makes everything sound just that much more spacey and drifting.

All in all this is yet another fine example of electronic music by Jean Michel Jarre and is very highly recommended along with Oxygene and Kraftwerk's Autobahn album from 1974.

4 out of 5 stars In the same field than Oxygene........2007-01-08

This album is as great as Oxygene. In my opinion, these are two of the best album in electronic music. As another reviewer said, close your eyes, don't let be disturbed by anything and fly far away from here.

5 out of 5 stars A must have.......2006-11-04

Nothing like this CD to drive, study, work, cook or simply sit with a glass of wine and listen to the melodies. Better if you use a good pair of phones, the sounds go through your head and make you feel awesome!!!
I've been hearing to this CD since I was a child and is always part of my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary space music.......2006-08-08

Though he didn't define the genre of electronic or space music (that awards should probably go to Tangerine Dream), Jean-Michel Jarre clearly took it to the masses. Though "Equinoxe" was his third album (his first one was "Deserted Palace" in 1972, followed by "Oxygene" four years later), for many people it was their introduction to his work and to this type of music altogether. I was one of them: I can clearly remember the first time I listened to it, its surround feel and its ethereal quality, and all it made me feel back then.

Close to thirty years after its release in 1978, the album still holds on strong. I know this may sound cheesy, but if there's any album that makes me feel like a seagull hovering over the coastline, it is this one. More specifically, parts 2, 3 and 4 of the album transport me every single time. I wish you the same joy while listening to "Equinoxe" that I've experienced time and again.
