Upbeat, refined, and congenial as ever, Café Tropical is the sixth release from Canadian-born guitarist Johannes Linstead; and like the others before it, it's a crisply performed, easy-to-like collection of nouveau flamenco destined to brighten the atmosphere, particularly at summer patio parties. Linstead, principally playing Spanish guitar (plus keyboards and assorted percussion with contributions from 10 other instrumentalists) is a nimble guitarist and tasteful composer who tones down flamenco's most incendiary tendencies just enough to create lively, feel-good melodies with suitable-for-all-audiences intentions. Prime examples: the disc's warm, soulful opener, "Cien Fuegos," and the trumpet-fueled title track, a piece that closely parallels "Mango" from 2001's Guitarra del Fuego. While tame by traditional standards, Linstead intermittently launches note-dense sorties on Café Tropical to showcase his formidable technique, and his inclusion of Cuban jazz pianist Hilario Duran on two tracks adds a welcomed taste of improvisational flair to the otherwise tightly structured proceedings. --Terry Wood

5 out of 5 stars Yet Another Gem! Beautiful job, Johannes. Bravo!.......2007-05-22

I don't know what it is about the music that this man plays, but the Lord God has definitely given him a gift to write and play music that touches the very heart and soul of a listener. I have all six of his CD's and to me this is his best work yet. A real tour de force of passionate power and feel-good energy.

1: Cien Fuegos - Translated as "A hundred fires", this starts off more slowly than one might think given the title. We are started off by what sounds to me like a rattle combined with a 'rolling' cymbal. The beautiful guitar melodies range in pace from mid-tempo to moderately quick. Chimes make a nice appearance in here on occasion. I love the violin work in this too. For some reason, it puts me in mind of looking out at the crashing waves on a beautiful tropical day. Very relaxing, with just enough 'fire' to warm the blood and stir the heart.

2. Cafe Tropical- This the title track, and a pretty fast one at that. It's a memorable tune to be certain, a beautiful dance between catchy quick guitar and invigorating trumpet melodies. Most of the guitar passages in hee appear to actually PRETTY quick, with some rapid fire fluid 'runs'. The trumpet passage in the middle brings a smile. A very danceable tune that makes me want to grab a sangria.

3. The Streets Of Old San Juan- Here we have another 'middle-of-the-road' piece as far as tempo. The percussion and invigorating guitar will draw you in quickly. Despite SOME very fast playing in parts, I love the mellow laid-back feel of the piece as a whole. The piano featured in this cut add a really 'tasty' flaveor that gives the piece a very nice character. The percussion stirs your heart while the guitar carries you along on a journey through the streets of this warm and inviting locale. Ole.

4. Spanish Town- Guitar and chimes begin the piece. It's a 'happy' little ditty that pulls you in fast. Again, the tempo is laid-back a bit, proving that Johannes does not have to always play a hundred miles a second to captivate a listener. The percussion and chimes warm this piece up as the guitar dances along. What I really love is the inclusion of the steel drums in here to give this piece a really exotic feel. It's a favorite.

5. Tides Of Eden - This is just BEAUTIFUL. It's my favorite tune on the disc. I LOVE it when Johannes decides to play it slow. This starts off VERY slowly, but doesn't stay that way. We are started off by very slow and pretty keyboards, chimes and violin, over which the guitar dances for us. The variations in the guitar's pacing paint a picture of incoming tides for us. I prefer the slower passages, but even the quicker runs are just as lovely and stirring to my heart and my blood. I can visualize standing alone or with a special someone upon a beach at sunset, watching the sun go down and seeing the tides come in. The occasional chimes and bells are a nice touch. The best part, or the most intriguing to me, is how the guitar drops away at the end, allowing the piece to finish with a beatiful, almost very softly 'crying' violin passage. This is an exquisite piece of music, and my favorite piece on the entire CD.

6. Ole Ole Ola- To me, this is road music. Put the top down and cruise The pacing is just right for me to picture a leisurely drive along a sun-splashed coastal paradise. As always, the guitar and percussion are fetching. In particular, the percussion to me feels almost primal. The chimes flow softly, almost like gentle waves through the melody on occasion. I just love it.

7. Suave- Here's another laid-back, jaunty, feel good number. Guitar and percussion mate with a SMOOTH undercurrent of piano. When I hear this I feel like a super-cool high-roller strolling in for a night on the town. I love the relaxing pace of this, and the guitar playing just makes me want to chill out and enjoy it all. Chimes are here again, adding a warm touch to it all. The piano puts me in mind of being in a high-class tropical nightclub. Beautiful! Bravo!

8. El Zocolo - Here, we finally get pretty fast. The opening guitar passage is almost 'swirling' its way along. It feels to me like another "cruising" melody, and I love it. For the most part, the percussion sounds a little softer, as if carrying the guitar instead of dancing along beside it, but that's cool with me. I like it very much. I love where the chimes come in, and the faster pace feels like Johannes 'busting loose' a bit. I LOVE pieces that feel like top-down, gun the engine road music.

9. Santeria- This piece, feels to me like another mid-tempo number. Guitar, percussion, and chimes interweave again at the start. The guitar melodies are, as always, terrific and stir the soul to me. The percussion and pace make this a dance number, but a kind of relaxed number that you "groove" to instead of dancing a thousand miles an hour. Great stuff... love it. :)

10. Chica Chica - Another quick one. This feels like a samba or something similar to it. Quick, blood-pumping guitar runs and percussion are the stars of the piece. The guitar heats you up while the percussion's pace keeps you moving.

11. Para La Habana- This is started by lovely slow guitar and the tapping of percussion that sounds like wooden blocks. The sound of the guitars puts me in the mindset of hearing a laid-back but SPICY piece of Cuban jazz music. I LOVE the violin that dances through this piece. At first I found the vocals distracting but they grew on me and gave this closing song a very nice flavor.

In closing I will just say this. If you are a fan of Johannes Linstead's music, you owe it to yourself to get Cafe Tropical. It's Johannes' best work yet in my view. If you are not a fan, one listen to Cafe Tropical may make you a fan forever. Happy listening, and God bless.

5 out of 5 stars A Spanish Guitar Fiesta.......2006-06-26

This CD is full of upbeat music that is full of life-affirming energy. It will make you want to celebrate, dance, play guitar...and speak Spanish!

4 out of 5 stars Great Songs -- Inconsistent Sound Quality.......2006-06-15

I have enjoyed Linstead's Latin inspired feel good music for years and own all of his CD's. Cafe Tropical contains some of his best upbeat songs and his guitar playing is, as always, very good. Several of the catchy melodies are hard to get out of your head. However, the sound/recording quality of 6 of the 11 tracks is a bit muddy, thin, and compressed; not anywhere the great quality of the clean/open/highly detailed sound of the cuts on Mediterranea. An audiophile or good mid-fi sound system clearly reveals these recording flaws. Also, the trumpet tracks sound like of a synthesizer and not from a well played trumpet. The only explanation that I can think of, for these shortcomings, is that Linstead may have recorded the songs several years ago using lesser quality equipment. Bottom line: 5 stars for song writing/guitar playing and 3 stars for recording quality. George M -- Phx, AZ

5 out of 5 stars I'm Lovin' It!!!.......2006-06-08

If you're a fan of Latin music and especially Spanish guitar, you will LOVE Cafe Tropical. Every song is different from the next with instrumentation ranging from guitar, to piano, violin, trumpet, and a whole host of spicy percussion instruments. Every time I put this CD on I hear new things, which I find makes for an even more enjoyable listen.

As usual, Johannes Linstead delivers some of the most catchy and memorable melodies in the nouveau flamenco genre, and of course his guitar playing speaks for itself. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Fun! Festive! FANTASTICO!.......2006-06-07

Cafe Tropical delivers what the title suggests: an album full of summer fun, with songs that make you feel like you are in the tropics enjoying an endless vacation.

The album has many sexy Afro-Cuban sounding pieces, like "Suave", 'Streets of Old San Juan", "Para La Habana", and the title track "Cafe Tropical". These songs feature some wonderful Cuban musicians like Hilario Duran on piano, Osvaldo Rodriguez on violin and vocals, and Alexis Baro on trumpet.

Cafe Tropical is perfect for backyard pool parties, cruising around town with the top down and the tunes cranked, and just about anytime you feel like celebrating!

    5 out of 5 stars Celedonio Romero.......2005-09-20

The great Celedonio Romero is well represented here. Often though of as a second string Segovia in part because his career during it's prime was somewhat hampered by prison terms imposed on him by Spanish dictator Franco. After the family escaped frist to Portugal and then to the United States the became best know as the Quartet Los Romeros. Celedonio although an inovator and great technician as well as poet on and off the guitar proves here that he is one of the all-time greats and should not live in anyone's shadow.

    5 out of 5 stars Seductive.......2003-07-01

There is no doubt that sometimes, a song can sedue you all the way down to the heart, if you meet that special heart of course. Toni Braxton felt that exact same way in her career, and her personal life of course. Sometimes, that specific song can make you meet Mr. or Ms. Right anyday. The song, Spanish Guitar was written by Diane Warren, who also wrote Un-Break My Heart for Toni in 1996. The song plays like a melodic dream, and is just a beautiful way of knowing the hopeful significant other you love them, even if they can't love you back. I really recommend this song for anybody trying to get love, even myself.

5 out of 5 stars Toni's Back On To The Dance Scene!.......2000-10-19

This is definately a must have single for any Toni Braxton fan or club fanatic! this is part 2 of a 2 cd set. A rare limited one pressing CD maxi single released only in Australia. The mixes are superb and are guaranteed to keep you dancing all night & into the morning. The first remix (Mousse T's Extended Mix) kind of has a disco/retro feeling to it kind of taking you back in time. Mousse T's Deep Vocal Mix is currently the type of song you would hear playing in a club late at night, definately a great mix. The HQ2 Club Mix (Hex Hector & Mac Quayle) is the best remix on this CD quite possible one of the hottest dance tracks of the year! this song made it to #1 on the dance hot 100 billboard charts for 2 weeks so that says enough. They turned this ballad into an amazing latin filled dance anthem! I love how they added the extra Spanish Guitar's in the background. The Eifel 65 Extended mix is different from their previous mixes no distorted vocals just a plain solid dance track however it's definately below standards compared to the other 3 mixes. Also make sure you check out "Spanish Guitar" part 1 of the 2 CD set. It contains all these remixes (all radio edits though) in exception to one extra track which is the Royal Gardens Flamenco Radio mix. This is another fantastic remix that has totally been remixed into a hot latin vibe anthem.

5 out of 5 stars THESE ARE THE ONES!!.......2000-10-18

Ok everyone, these are the mixes that you've been looking for, the full length club versions of Toni's "Spanish Guitar". I suppose you'll want to know what's on this disc...

    1) Radio Mix - 4:30 - the original version which was produced by David Foster. One of the ballads that Toni sings so beautifully.

    2) Mousse T's Extended Mix - 6:30 - Mousse T (remixes for Amber, Ann Nesby) gives us a nice light house mix here. No good for club use, just some nice club tunes that focus on Toni's vocals and the spanish guitar strumming through the track. A good mix.

    3) HQ2 Mix - 8:54 - Hex Hector & Mac Quayle (Madonna, Tracie Spencer, Pulse) produced this remix that took American clubs by storm a few moments back. A nice solid beat that's matched up again with the spanish guitars. The guitars are used alot more frequently in this remix, and they work remarkably well. This is a fabulous remix that must be heard. Any fan of the flamenco sound will definately enjoy this one.

    4) Mousse T's Deep Vocal Mix - 8:38 - Mousse T's second take on the song and I feel that it works a little bit better than the first. A little bit harder than the first mix, but still keeping that nice light house feel to it. The spanish guitars aren't used nearly as much in this remix as they are in the other versions, which some may say is a good thing, depending on your view of the flamenco sound. They don't really kick into the track until a little over the half way point.

    5) Eiffel 65 Extended Mix - 6:57 - Eiffel 65 (Kim Lukas, Love Inc. & S Club 7) give us a shockingly good remix. I was not expecting much from the Eiffel crew for their mixes are not usually my style. But this one steers clear of the vocoder vocals that we are used to from these guys, they keep the guitars working through the whole mix, but they also still keep some of their sound to the remix through the throbbing backbeat. Great work from these boys.

So kids, until the BMG crew gets their act together and starts to release club smashes (this one among others) as domestic singles, you'd better order this import while it's is still available. Enjoy the music.

I too just happened to stumble upon it in a music store a few years ago and it is now one my holiday favorites.
Pasero is a great player and this recording is fantastic- so clean and acoustically pleasing.
Incidentally, my daughter has been dancing in a production of the Nutcracker Ballet for the past 9 years. I made a slide show in Photoshop of the performance using this CD for the music.

great classics. I'm not a great fan of classical guitar

Born into a well-known Gypsy family in Spain who have spawned an extensive lineage of guitarists, Miguel Angel Cortés has benefited from innate talent and an artistically nurturing environment. He even won the Paco de Lucia Guitar Award in 1994, but while he remains loyal to tradition, he also tries to broaden his horizons. On his predominately instrumental eight-song debut, Patriarca, the 28-year-old flamenco guitarist deftly works with traditional forms such as tangos and bulerías but also brings in unorthodox instrumentation to spice things up. The most notable examples are J.A. Galicia's lively tabla playing (on both "Al Likindoy" and "La Puerta del Sueño"), which one would normally associate with Indian music, and Agustin Carrillo's jazzy saxophone work (on the rumba "Kuriachi"). The presence of these instruments does not feel awkward or unwarranted because their integration is natural and unobtrusive. Cortés himself is a pleasure to listen to--he has the agility and dexterity to fly across the frets, but he also understands the need for subtlety, for his music is as much about emotion as performance. --Bryan Reesman

5 out of 5 stars Keeping the tradition alive.......2002-08-16

An excellent disc that combines the use of other instruments besides guitar in such a manner as to create a beautiful authentic flamenco. Cortes shows his diverse talents in his repotoire that consists of the gamut of flamenco. He plays bulerias, rumbas and tangos, just to name a few, with an adept quality beyond his young years and with flawless dexterity and grace. A more moving piece of flamenco music would be hard to find. The songs demonstrate his versatlity as well as his knowledge of flamenco. I found all the songs to be super but especially noteworthy are "Al Likindoy" where Cortes is accompanied by the tabla and cajon to create a soothing piece of music that is pure flamenco magic. Other outstanding tracks include the rumba "Kuriachi"' where Cortes's fingers fly off the frets, only to matched by the sax players solo that is reminiscent of Gato Barberi. The title track, "Patriarca" is dedicated to Cortes father Miguelon Cortes and is just an outstanding homage that is pure flamenco, richly melodic without over done flash that is steeped deep in tradition. If you like flamenco this is a keeper for the disc player. My only complaint is that it is too short, with only eight songs and docking in at 39:32 it left me wanting more. I guess that is what the replay button is for, buy it anyway, it is a good addition to your flamenco collection.

5 out of 5 stars Energetic, innovative, technically flawless performances........2000-07-04

The music of Miguel Angle Cortes is energetic, innovative, technically flawless, and combines traditional and non-traditional elements for a truly memorable listening experience. Patriarca is a superbly produced, highly recommended showcasing of a remarkable talent and includes: De Corales (4:55); Raquel (4:30); La Luna Creciente (5:39); Al Likindoy (4:57); Kuriachi (4:47); Sacais de Azabache (5:02); La Puerta del Sueno (4:37); and the title piece, Patriarca (4:43).

Outside of the U.S., "Spanish Guitar" is the second single from this resurrected R&B singing sensation's current smash album, the #2 & platinum 'The Heat', her third. LaFace Records will not release "Spanish Guitar" in the U.S. as they've got their hands full successfully scaling Billboard's Hot 100 singles & tracks with "Just Be A Man About It", which is presently #32 with a bullet after just six weeks of activity. Best of all for collectors is the fact that the first part of this import-only disc sports five previously unreleased non-album

        4 out of 5 stars Seductive Love.......2003-09-17

When it comes to Diane Warren, she has written some of the most elegant ballads of all. That case has been from the voice of Toni Braxton. Toni has scored it as a huge hit before with Un-Break My Heart. The song reached numerous tears fall down. Still, Toni was surprised by it, and again. Her song Spanish Guitar was issued a the third single from The Heat. The song is one of the most beautiful ballads I heard Toni Braxton perform ever. Still, I just miss a lot of those ballads that were on the radio. Although this wasn't made on U.S. radio, it still can strike a chord with beauty and the eyes of hopeful love. If you can't find this single, get The Heat and find love.

        4 out of 5 stars THat's so beautiful..........2002-09-01

I really like this song except the part when that guy is talking and singing. He has the most awful voice I've ever heard.(no, Marilyn Manson is even worsre) Anyway this is a beautiful Latin-Love_song just like "Unbreak my heart".
But the 4 mixes are horibble. You really can't change such a song into a dance tune. Why did they do this? By the way the four mixes sound all the same.

5 out of 5 stars Sexy and Sensual.......2001-01-10

I dont care what anyone says, Toni Braxton has a beautiful voice. She can use her voice in many ways which makes her exciting, and she is very good at singing ballads. This is the CD single for her Spanish Guitar song, written by Diane Warren. The remixes are tight, my favorite are the Royal Garden's Flamenco Mix, HQ2 Radio Edit, but the others are nice. This is a little pricey but its worth it, this is one of her best songs and I wish it was played more in the US because we are missing out here!

3 out of 5 stars Beware; these are only the radio edits but they are nice.......2000-12-06

This release is part one or a 2-cd set with the second cd installment having the full remixes.

Moussey T simply adds beat and bass around the original production but does not seem to spice up things much. Now Hex Hector and Quayle side-step their usual deep and dark sound in favor of a more uhh spanish feel, and rightly so. Must every thing be made into the same thing. HQ2 compliment the original production and make it even more of what it was intended to be. Royal Garden keep the spirit of the original feel of the song while slowing down the vocal and adding a nice mid-tempo beat. Eiffel 65 had me wondering for a minute. How was Toni going to sound with the "Blue" Boys backing her. I could breath a sigh of relief as I hear that they did not attempt to make this into what I feared they had done. No, instead they go along the lines of Mousse T. This mix ends rather aburptly.

For those who like remixes but not length, this will fare well.

5 out of 5 stars FINALLY -TONI REMIXES!!!!!!!!!!.......2000-10-08

Track list: Radio mix -4:30/ Mousse T's Radio mix -4:07/ HQ2 Radio mix -4:11/ Royal Garden's Flamenco mix -4:35/ Eiffel 65 Radio edit -3:30.

Toni's second track from "Heat" is this sublime ballad written by Diane Warren -"Un-break my heart" Part 2, you could call it, but there is nothing wrong with that. This CD single -exclusive to Australia- is just the remixed radio edits but note that this is part 1. Part 2 (released 3 weeks later) includes the full length mixes.

Each mix is just as satisfying as the next with the remixers laying down gorgeous dance beats under Toni's sweet vocals. Nothing new from Mousse T. Good stuff though from Hex and Max= HQ2 build up a heavier mix with the spanish guitar riding pretty much like that fantastic guitar lick did in their mix for Madonna's "Music"; a quick flamenco breakdown and then Toni comes back to close on top of the busy guitar and the backing chorus lines. The Royal Garden mix is great with a gentle, chugging dance beat driving the song. The Eiffel 65 mix is a nice surprise= no distorted vocals or cheesy Euro pop -just a solid dance track that starts to descend into something a little stronger just as it ends. Each remix maintains the class and sophistication of the original album version and keeps the flamenco touches and Spanish adlibs. Absolutely gorgeous.

The song, however, doesn't seem to be getting much attention at radio. Still "Un-break my heart" took a while to unfold and look at the damage that song did when it finally broke out. "Spanish guitar" has the same potential and is just begging for some deserved attention.

Part 2 is worth searching out to finally hear just where that Eiffel 65 remix was going when the edit finished! It also includes the nine minute HQ2 remix and a stronger, more interesting, nine minute "Deep vocal mix" by Mousse T.

SO now, when are we going to get those fantastic mixes of "He wasn't man enough"?!

The beautiful music on this album perfectly blends the Old World SPanish style to the New World. The artistry of the flutist and guitar player are exceptional as are the accompanying rhythms and castanets on some of the cuts. Provides relaxing and upbeat background music for home, office or driving.
