Solid, lovely to listen to (yes, I said "lovely").......2007-06-09

I can see planets moving in the cosmos when I listen to James McMurtry. This is an album full of great tracks. I've got other recordings of some of them, and I wouldn't prioritize any over others, because James McMurtry is so emotive that ...any particular day, even if you get a different sound, it's a good one. But for a good set of recordings on a single CD you can leave in the player or take on a trip, this is nice. I am enjoying it time and time again, and will most likely listen more to this album than my older ones, unless I'm on a huge James kick, and want to hear more of a range.

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

Guy Clark: The quintessential Singer/songwriter.......2007-03-24

Guy Clark is a national treasure. Simply put a gifted songwriter who capture's the essence of every day life. His rugged voice, wonderful lyrics and catchy melodies never fail to entertain and illuminate. He deals with our inner angst with humor and insight in his songs. He captures the moody moments of growing up in America during the last half century. His humor, his meticulously crafted metaphor make him one of our best songwriters. Since I heard his first album OLD NO. 1 back in the seventies he has been at the top of my list with Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nelson, John Prine and Leonard Cohen.

This new CD American Masters Series: Best of the Sugar Hill Years will not be available until Tuesday but it contains fresh material not available on Guy's most prominent Albums. Songs in the Clark Arsenal include classics such as LA Freeway, Desperado's Waiting for a Train, Texas 1947, The Last Gunfighter Ballad, One Paper Kid, Better Days, Home Grown Tomatoes, Watermelon Dream, Immigrant Eyes, The Cape and the wonderful Randall Knife. They are part of the fabric of our culture. Those along with a hundred others songs with iconic lyrics and touching melodies are now part of his and our musical heritage. If even one of the songs on the new CD is half as good as any of these songs it will be worth the price of admission.

In short he is the quintessential singer-songwriter of his day. I always look forward to the newest Guy Clark CD and can not wait to hear this new record.

Got Live If You Want It!.......2002-12-12

To set the record straight both Malcolm Holcombe and Jesse Harris have had major label releases. The reviewer who claimed this was a collection of local artists was totally off base . This CD is filled with inspired performances. and the Norah Jones track is just stunning. Malcom shines like a rusty diamond - if you like Tom Waits and John Prine you'll love his work. Jesse Harris wrote five songs on Norah's Blue Note release and is featured singing tracks from his new release. The other artists also offer a glimpse into what a night at the Living Room is like. Buy this collection.

ALMOST AS GOOD AS BEING THERE!!!.......2002-11-17

WHAT A SOUND!! This CD sounds almost as new and fresh as being there.Norah Jones sounds live, indeed; not like most studio recordings. I've seen her at THE LIVINGROOM,so I know!! Jesse Harris also lays down some good tracks. OVERALL : An excellent and diverse selection of acoustic music. I'm looking forward to their next volume.

Neat to hear Norah before the hype.....I like this live version of Got To See You Again better than the studio one....I think her songwriter Jesse Harris is really good too...Totally worth my ten bucks.....

Norah sings only one song on this CD. The rest is an assortment of apparently local artists of varying talent. If you want to hear Norah, save your ten bucks for her next release!

There's nobody quite like the affable Texan Don Walser. His stellar yodeling alone has led critics to call him the "Pavarotti of the Plains" (Playboy) and "the greatest country singer in the world" (the Austin Chronicle). Walser honed his honky-tonk street cred during decades of playing Texas dance halls before he retired from his day job with the National Guard and promptly cut his well-received major label debut, Rolling Stone from Texas (1994). The Archive Series plucks two volumes' worth of material from earlier, mostly local releases. Of Walser's six released albums, this is my favorite. If you're a Walser fan, you like yodeling, and there are more, and better, yodeling tracks on this cut than any of the others. The production values aren't quite as strong as in his national releases, but the performances are very genuine. I've heard him live as well, and would say that if you're going to buy only one Walser album, this should be it. But buy the rest--he's a treasure.

Album Description

Volume Two in the Spanker's Bootleg Series represents the second half of their life from 2000 to 2004. A rotating cast of characters was a defining trait of the band in these years and the songs came and went with the musicians who brought them. Most of the songs in this collection are no longer in the repertoire and for whatever reason were never recorded in a proper studio setting. Included are covers of Dylan, Louis Armstrong, Ann Cole and Nine Inch Nails as well as Spankerized versions of songs from some solo albums.

I bought this CD mainly for the Pussycat Song. Heard it on the radio a while back, it's hilarious. However, I think anyone who attempts to listen to the CD might need a radio station's gear and/or expertise to resurrect the vocals, which are buried deeply in the background, with lots of crowd noise, laughing, etc. in the foreground. Could barely make out what was being sung. I had to look up the song's lyrics on the web, just to follow along (printed lyrics aren't included with the CD's front material, by the way). A bit of a disappointment, I'm afraid. Too bad...
