Customer Reviews:
A good collection of early Cusco.......2003-02-24
This 1990 CD, like Mystic Island released in 1989, is an excellent collection of songs from Cusco's earlier CDs that, at the time, had not been released in the States. Both were put together by Higher Octave after their successful first American release, Apurimac, to satisfy new-found fan demand for their earlier music. Water Stories was later released on the Prudence label in Germany, where it was considered a "best of" compilation. Early Cusco CDs are catchy, almost always fast-paced instrumentals that are on the edge of New Age. The group challenges the boundaries with pop, cosmopolitan rock, jazz and classical. Not as mature as some of their later albums, but make no mistake, this is outstanding New Age music. On Water Stories, their trademark panpipes and keyboards are used on selections related to the bodies of water that popped up on Desert Island, Cusco II, Cool Island, Virgin Island, and Ring der Delphine. The songs range from the upbeat "Waters of Cesme", to the beautiful "Lake Erie" (an interesting arrangement of the traditional Scarborough Fair), to the almost classical "Aurora" which uses the strings of the Munich Symphony Orchestra. The final cut, "Chorus", is from Musik Mantras 2, a haunting Johannes Walter production which includes some of Cusco's music. If you want a one-stop sample of some of the "pre-Apurimac" music that made Cusco one of Japan and Europe's (and now America's) favorite contemporary instrumental groups, Water Stories is a good choice.
"Pop" New Age: failed to grasp me, for the most part.......2002-12-09
This album by Cusco definitely failed to grasp me. It tries to be epic at times, it tries to sound like Wollenweider other times, it wants to sound like the music from the Bolivian Andes and it misses the point most of the time. "Lake Erie," a song based on a Simon & Garfunkel theme, "Lake of the Ozarks" and "Aurora" were the only three songs that I really enjoyed. Sorry, Cusco fans, but to me this album was more like "pop" new age for the most part. For REAL new age, please go to Vangelis, Kitaro, Jean-Michel Jarre or some of Windham Hill's acts.
You Better buy this before all the CDs are gone!.......2002-01-14
Hurry and order this CD! Higher Octive will not be making more of these ever! Like Mystic Island, Water Stories is a collection of German released and American songs Cusco has done. This music is a masterpiece and unique to the ear. You can not dislike any of the songs, each is different and has it's own tune. I highly advise to buy this, you will not be disapointed!
For everyone. Worth at least 3 times it's price..........1999-10-19
First of all, many people will like this album better the second time they listen to it. Especially if your new to Cusco. Like every Cusco album this one has instrumentation and flavor unique to any other (Cusco, or not). Every song has it's own special quality, no same-as-that-last-song feel here. Many can change or enhance your mood.
Some picks: Sun of Jamaica, and Alcatraz, these songs are more universal then most on the CD. They are great for anything, driving, imagination, playing PC sims/games, dreaming of flight, anything. Java is much like this, but it seems to have more of a, well, ceremonial theme. Bur Said and Jebel at Tarik are even more ceremonial. Aurora is as beautiful as Mystic Islands' (another Cusco release) Lonely Rose, if you are in a soft or heart-broken mood it may make you cry. Let me stress one more time: most songs you will need to listen to more than once to get the full effect, this is especially true with the last track, Chorus.
This is a 10 star album, a timeless masterpiece (really!).
Go Places Music.......1999-10-02
The music on this CD will grab hold and take you places you *want* to be. Thrilling from beginning to end.

Customer Reviews:
Great CD.......2001-05-27
Generally, I shy away from "Christian" pop music, but I make an exception for the Bill Welch Band (I happen to know the guys, and have opened for a show of theirs). While the music of many Christian pop groups sounds forced and inauthentic to me, these guys' work is an undiluted look at who they are and what they believe. They also take a lot of time and care to make sure that the music they play is pure, is direct, and holds together. The band's members have some hard experience in the trenches of jazz, classical, blues, latin, R&B, and world music, and it really shows.
However, the best experience of their music is a live show.
Inspirational!.......2001-03-05
I know Bill, his wife Kathy and his brother Fred, from high school and have always been interested in Bill's music. When I heard that the band was doing a live performance, I knew I must go see it. I was caught off guard by the Christian beliefs that are very apparent in the lyrics and yet I welcomed the message whole-heartedly. I was moved by the music immediately and could not stop my foot from tapping, my hands from clapping, or somehow moving to the music. The songs are motivational and insprirational, not only in their lyrics but also in the music. The harmonies and rhythms are a wonderful combination of many different styles of music that have been successfully blended together to create a unique and awsome collection of songs. I bought the CD after the first half of the show, without even hearing all the songs, and now I listen to it almost every day. The lyrics speak to me and situations that occur in my life, while the music is up-lifting and yet soothing. Listening to 'At the Water's Edge' always improves my mood and it has become one of the favorite CDs in my collection. I can hardly wait for the next release. I am so happy for Bill, and everyone involved in the band, that the years of hard work have paid off with such extraordinary results!
Great Band, Great CD.......2001-02-09
This would be a welcome addition to many music fans' collections. It seems to span several different categories, including jazz and easy-listening rock without ever being confined to one. A sorely-needed, positive message is the only common thread.
The music encompasses many different styles, yet it has a top-notch "feel" in all areas. The band honors Bill's music and lyrics well, the production is perfect, and Bill tops it off with soulful, heartfelt vocals. It's all good.
I'm looking forward to future releases.
A Breath of Fresh Spring Air.......2001-01-08
That is the best way to describe the music of the Bill Welch Band. Having heard one of their songs being played on a local jazz/blues station I was smart enough to go and hear them in concert. I had no idea that they were going to play music with a heavy emphasis on their Christian beliefs. As a Unitarian that might have kept me away. All I can say is that I was blown away by their intense talent and spirit. They took me totally by surprise and I am now a huge fan. Their cd is top notch and would be a super addition to anyone's collection.
Yeah, T! You go, man!.......2000-12-01
Let me explain the title of this review, since it probably has quite a few people out there scratching their heads. I am a Fairport High School Alumnus, and I played in the FHS Jazz bands under the direction of Mr. Bill "T" Tiberio, prominantly featured on the Bill Welch Band's CD. That, incidentally, is how I found out about and bought the CD. About the CD: I can sum it up in only a few words: Best coupla bucks I ever spent. The Bill Welch Band has a fantastic sound. The whole thing is clean, beautiful, and has some great music (believe me, I'm a music major!). Not to mention the message is positive, which can be tough to find these days. And, as is customary whenever these guys break out the instruments, you can tell they really know their stuff. I'm seriously looking forward to the next release! Hope all of you out there enjoy this as much as I did.

Bjornstad has three other CDs in this series, The Sea, The Sea II and The River. Each would stand alone as tranquil, pensive music from fine musicians (particularly David Darling). Taken together they are too too much the same. Water Stories stands out a bit from the others, has more variation, more interest and maybe even a surprise or two (you may never stay awake through all of The Sea I & II). Terje Rypdal provides, for me at least, the only relief in this vast and rather blank seascape.

IBERT.... UNINSPIRED.......2001-08-06
The word "uninspired" is used diplomatically here; it's far worse. No matter how hard pianist Hae-Wong Chang tries, there is no way she can breathe life into these dull works. It's not her fault. All the sensuous flavor, the piquant coloring, the rich and distinctive atmosphere of Ibert's orchestral music remains conspicuously absent in his piano music. Now, considering that Ibert (1890-1962) had been a pupil of Faure, the lack of contrast, depth, ingenuity, melody and invention seems profoundly mysterious. Frankly, these "works" border on the inane. It just seems incomprehensible to me.
And, it's a long CD overflowing with pieces that titillate the eye, but not the ear: compositions with endearing names like Little Suite In Fifteen Pictures (with cute titles that lure you in, like, "Lullaby Under the Stars," "Sleigh Ride," "Romance," "Serenade on the Water" and "L'Adieu") or Stories For Piano ("A Giddy Girl," "In the Sad House," "Under the Table," etc.) and Encounters (Ballet Suite for Piano). Yet, all are sadly lacking in any kind of musical charm or content that might even hold your interest for five minutes. These are not the genre pictures of MacDowell's Woodland Sketches, Grieg's Lyric Pieces, Schumann's Kinderscenen or Tchaikovsky's Album For The Young.
It's all so mundane, unfortunately, that you'd have to have the patience of Job to wade through the homogeneity here.... or be unwillingly duct-taped to your couch.
Massively disappointing music featuring an excellent pianist, excellent sound and a phenomenal playing time. But to what end? Well, I suppose, giving the devil his due, it was enterprising of Naxos to allow us the opportunity to "hear" these Ibert works, regardless of their merit or lack thereof. And I suppose, as well, that this matters equally.
