Is there anything that simply screams the 1970s' most indelible pop cultural clichés--the sunny romanticism, perfect vocal hooks, feathered hair, stacked heels, and flared sateen britches--more than the Swedish pop phenomenon Abba? And while many a pundit snootily dismissed them during their prime as some sort of prefabricated aberration, their worldwide popularity peaked somewhere just south of Beatlesmania. Indeed, Abba's music was as finely tooled and crafted as anything to come from a Volvo or IKEA factory--if occasionally more economically potent. This double-disc, 37-track anthology comes neatly on the heels of Mama Mia!, the smash, if unlikely, Broadway show based on the band's hits, and documents every single released by the band's Polar label in their home country as well as key tracks released internationally. This is the canon from whence the term "Europop" sprang. With a continental sense of vocal neoclassicism, informed by just the right ethnic clichés (and oft wed to the era's insistent 4/4 disco beat) to make songs like "Mama Mia," "Fernando," "Chiquitita," and "Voulez-Vous" work on a global scale, the writing team of Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson and their respective partners in music and life, Agnetha Faltskog and Frida Lyngstad, developed the seamless, wall-of-sound productions contained herein. The Definitive Collection features a rare single remix of "Ring, Ring" and a 1979 promo-only extended mix of "Voulez-Vous" as bonus tracks, as well as a concise, illustrated history of the band and each track. --Jerry McCulley

Sweet sounds from a super group........2007-02-06

ABBA forever! What voices!
Befuddling; There's Already A Boxed Set.......2005-05-14
The same goes for ABBA. Granted, the Swedish pop group has not been anthologized nowhere near as many times as the previous artists I've mentioned, but when they released the "Thank You For The Music" boxed set in 1994, the hits collections should have been done away with it. Granted, 2002's "The Definitive Collection" was a great way to expose new fans to ABBA without giving them too much all at once, but that was it. Stuff like "Gold" and "More Gold" should have been taken off the market.
Well, now we got "20th Century Masters - The Millenium Collection: The Best Of ABBA", a terrible, 12 track compilation. Now, I'm not saying ABBA's music. I personally think that their music never ranked below a solid 8.5, with the majority of it hitting a 10. However, all you get here is their most popular work, nothing else. Since this is an American collection, it makes sense sicne they only had four big (top ten) stateside hits, but even this is an inexcusable excuse.
Bottom line: skip this.
makes a good present.......2005-04-07
i bought this as a present for my mum, cuz i knew she loved ABBA. gotta say, being a Britney spears fan, some of these songs aren't too bad. Now i kinda know why Britney says she was a bit "influenced" by them
ABBA's biggest American hits back to back.........2004-11-20
For the casual listener, this CD is highly recommended as it cuts right down to the chase (but then again, so does ABBA GOLD). For those of you out there who are impatient and can't sit through GOLD's 19 tracks then this CD is a blessing. The CD offers 11 out of ABBA's 20 US Chart entries. All of the 11 songs that are showcased peaked in the Top Forty of the Billboard singles charts. Ranging from their biggest- "Dancing Queen" (US# 1, CAN# 2), "Take a Chance on Me" (US# 3, CAN# 7), "Waterloo" (US# 6), "The Winner Takes It All" (US# 8, CAN #10), "Fernando" (US# 13, CAN# 2), "Knowing Me Knowing You (US# 14, CAN# 2), "SOS" (US# 15, CAN# 9), "I Do I Do I Do I Do I Do" (US# 15, CAN# 12), "The Name of the Game" (US# 12, CAN# 15) to their medium sized American hits- "Chiquitita" (US# 29, CAN# 17) and "Mamma Mia" (US# 32, CAN# 20).
However, even as a North American hits showcase, this CD is incomplete. Missing are the Top Forty Hits "Does Your Mother Know" (US# 19, CAN# 8), "Honey Honey" (US# 27) and "When All Is Said and Done" (US# 27). In my opinion, it should have also included their minor US hits such as "Super Trouper", "Money Money Money", "The Visitors", "Angeleyes", "Voulez-vous" and "On and On and On". But then again, THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION covers all the above and more.
It's very hard for me to give an ABBA greatest hits collection anything less than 5 stars considering all of their hit singles are extraordinary pieces of work with strong singing and excellent vocal harmonies. All of ABBA's hardcore fans probably already own the more condensed (and highly recommended) ABBA GOLD or THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION so this review is obviously not geared towards them. For the casual listener who may just want a sample of those four Swedes who conquered the International music charts bewteen 1974-1982, this CD is the perfect buy. Be warned however, that there is a high percentage that it will leave you wanting more.

Aaron Copland made numerous recordings of his own music, including an extensive series for CBS during the 1960s and '70s, mostly with London orchestras. He was not an especially proficient conductor--consequently, the performances he conducted often lacked pace and rhythmic punch. His last recordings of his most popular scores have been reissued by Sony on an exceptionally well-remastered 3-CD set. These accounts do a good job of conveying the overall shape of the pieces, and they deliver telling characterizations of many episodes. Details emerge that are lost in some other accounts, and there is an appealing gentleness and sweetness to the approach. But the readings do not have as much grip as those of Bernstein and Slatkin, among others, and in spite of the authority they automatically possess, they are not necessarily preferable. --Ted LibbeyCustomer Reviews:
Bought this for Concerto for Clarinet.......2007-07-14
An added plus is the many other popular pieces that you know you heard but did not realize it was Copland especially the music from movies.
You may have to play the set a few times before being able to recognize the different tracks by name. The down side is many of Copland's works are outside of the date range of this collection.
Aaron Copland: Populist and Conductor.......2005-03-29
What amazing riches flowed from Copland's pen during the period covered by these three discs! Billy the Kid (1939), Quiet City (1940), Our Town (1940), Fanfare for the Common Man (1942), Rodeo (1942), Lincoln Portrait (1942), Appalachian Spring (1944), and the Third Symphony (1946)--all are here. Some of this music is so familiar, so deeply ingrained in America's cultural consciousness, that we might be tempted to take it for granted. But imagine how much poorer the American concert repertoire would be without it. It's almost impossible, at this point, to conceive of a time when this wonderful music--which is to America roughly what Mussorgsky's music is to Russia, Grieg's to Norway, and Falla's to Spain--didn't exist. It was during the dozen years covered by this collection that Copland pulled away from the pack of his talented contemporaries (Hanson, Thomson, Harris, etc.) and, in a way, but with greater technical sophistication, filled the void left by the tragically early death of Gershwin, whose heyday, 1924-1935, immediately preceded the composition of the works on this collection.
The ballet music is all presented here in the familiar orchestral suites Copland arranged. Most of the selections are played by the London Symphony Orchestra, although the New Philharmonia and the just-plain Philharmonia get cracks at a few key works. The last-named orchestra, for instance, takes on the biggest piece on the program, Copland's Third, the closest thing American music has to a Beethoven's Ninth (although the work's sublime rhetoric has never completely convinced me--it's neither my personal favorite by Copland nor my favorite American symphony . . . but it sure has its moments). In addition to the fine orchestral playing, another treat is that Henry Fonda narrates the Lincoln Portrait--an almost inevitable pick, given the virtually mythic way his acting style embodied the American spirit and the fact that he had portrayed the sixteenth president in John Ford's classic film Young Mr. Lincoln (1939).
The set concludes with what, over the years, has become my favorite work by Copland, the Concerto for Clarinet, Strings, Harp, & Piano, written for and performed here by surely the last century's greatest clarinetist, Benny Goodman. This work effects a concise synthesis between Copland's mature style and his earlier jazz stylings from the 1920s; in addition, the searing eloquence of the opening slow movement seems to me the most profound lyrical writing Copland ever achieved. Stoltzman's recording, ironically enough, swings harder than the king of swing's, but this collaboration between the composer and the man who commissioned it is for the ages.
The only major "populist" scores written after the period this collection covers are the film scores to The Red Pony (1948) and The Heiress (1949). Both can be acquired on an essential Leonard Slatkin CD for RCA. And since this collection doesn't include chamber music, the great Violin Sonata (1943), a kind of more intimate counterpart to Appalachian Spring, will have to be sought elsewhere. (One good option is Gil Shaham/Andre Previn on DG.) A serious Copland collector will also want to grab the other two volumes of the Copland Collection itself. The early set features important works such as the Organ Symphony (1924), Music for the Theater (1925), and the Short Symphony (1932)--but both of the other collections also include long, thorny pieces like the early Symphonic Ode and the late Connotations that can be rather difficult for the average enthusiast to enjoy.
Most of the essential, universal Copland is to be found on this second installment of the Copland Collection, and I would definitely recommend it as the place to start exploring Copland's magnificent contribution to American music. It has been a wonderful and treasured companion of mine for many years, and it also serves to conjure up a timely and inspiring vision of open prairies, nocturnal cityscapes, and the populist, humane values that America should, ideally, epitomize.

A couple of early bubble-gummy tracks ("Ring Ring," "So Long") are the only reminders on The Collection that ABBA were one infectious junk-pop machine. Most of this disc, something of a laidback companion to the two ABBA Gold CDs, is given over to big- production adult-contemporary ballads like "Thank You for the Music," "The Winner Takes It All," and "Fernando." So your buying choice depends on whether you're a fan of the rather stultifyingly "mature" ABBA herein displayed or of the fab outfit that produced "Waterloo," "Dancing Queen" and the (grown-up!) "Knowing Me, Knowing You"--all of them absent here. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:
A guilty pleasure for someone only twenty-two! .......2007-07-12
Thank YOU Barnes and Noble, for letting me purchase this wonderful CD for only $9.99!
Granted, I was not around when ABBA graced the airwaves across Sweden and the United States, but that does not mean I cannot appreciate them. After all, without them, would we have had the A*Teens? Probably, but with so many covers being done by other groups such as the dance act Sylver and E-Rotic, there is reason why they are being covered.
Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus are nothing short of genius when it comes to writing and composing. Regardless of any age group, these songs are extremely easy to pick up and listen to. Granted some songs may deal with divorce and things that most teenagers have yet to experience, but they can be related in some way. The piano flourishes beautifully in each of these tracks with a tiny hint of disco lingering around the background.
"Fernando" is stunning, with its marching band drums and battle cry like whistling in the beginning of the song. "Angel Eyes," is a delictable and danceable treat with some of the most creative lyrics "The look that he gave her made me shiver / cos he always used to look at me that way/ and I thought/ maybe I should walk right up to her and say / it's a game he likes to play." Before we had the tell off songs of Beyonce and Kelly Clarkson, we had ABBA!
"So Long" and "Ring, Ring" are extremely infectious, and bring a sense of light rock pop to the album. "Ring, Ring," is definitely my favorite out of the two, as it seems more upbeat and the lyrics are ace. "Ring, ring, why don't you give me a call? / Ring, ring, I stare at the phone on the wall / And I sit all alone impatiently..."
However, kudos and my favorite track on the album is the closer, "The Way Old Friends Do." It starts off with a French like beat, which fades into the background while the quartet's vocals shine! The song definitely has more mature lyrics than the rest of the tracks and it is one of the shortest tracks on the album. "I don't care / what comes tomorrow / we can face it together / the way old friends do." Immediately after that part, I get chills from the orchestral background that seeps together with the vocals, not overpowering the vocals, but definitely adding much needed emphasis.
All in all, I am kinda blue that I wasn't around when ABBA was at their prime, but with bands paying tribute to them around the clock, I can find solace knowing that ABBA will always be around, "the way old friends" are.
A nice selection of ABBA tunes.......2004-04-27
Yes, considering the group broke up some sixteen years before this album came out there is nothing new here. But, that said, it is a nice album with lots of great ABBA tunes. Heck, I do not have a large CD collection, and as such was very glad to have access to tunes that I did not have before. In particular, I found the album's ending with The Way Old Friends Do to be quite poignant.
My thirteen-year-old daughter has now become an ABBA fan, and she enjoys this album as much as I do. We both recommend this CD to you!
Nothing special here.......2002-08-14
