4 out of 5 stars essence of Fellini..........2007-05-09

As evocative as any perfume, this CD brings forth clear images of the films for which this music was written. Makes a charming background for any party, seemingly brainless fun, yet sophisticated and delightful. Also good to cook to...

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-04-22

For this release, Silva Screen released their previous disc of Music from Fellini films, along with the best tracks from Nic Raine's 1998 recording of the complete score of Romeo and Juliet, as well as Paul Bateman's 2001 Godfather Trilogy disc, along with a few new tracks and other tracks from Silva's back catalog of music.

The last two tracks of the first disc, and the entire second disc is devoted to Fellini Films. All of the Fellini tracks are from 1993's "Music From Fellini Films", with Derek Wadsworth conducting the City of Prague Philharmonic (then credited as the Czech Symphony), with the exception of "Toby Dammit" which was recorded for this disc with Mario Klemens conducting.

"The Taming of the Shrew" is from Silva Screen's successful 2001 "Shakespeare at the Movies" set, while Death On The Nile and the Glass Mountain have been newly recorded for this set.

In conclusion, if you had the first disc of Rota/Fellini music then perhaps this would not be worth it, but overall this is a superb collection with that previous release in its entirety (remastered in HDCD surround sound, I might add), along with the best tracks from the Godfather Trilogy and Romeo and Juliet, with some more films sprinkled about, its a must-have, for anyone who wants a taste of Rota for less than $25.

5 out of 5 stars "premier composer of Italy (1911-1979) ~ Nino Rota".......2003-08-26

The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra performs the gems by composer Nino Rota, conducted by Derek Wadsworth, Paul Bateman, Nic Raine and Mario Klemens. This latest release "The Essential Nino Rota Film Music Collection", has all the romantic and poetic scores ever conceived. Rota's music remains in your mind with haunting and forbiding themes that will stay with you the rest of your days.

Rota has the ability to capture the moments from each cue in his scores with "THE TAMING OF THE SHREW", "THE GLASS MOUNTAIN", "LA DOLCE VITA" and "ROMEO & JULIET, the tapestry is fine and the weave is just right. That's just for starters, listen and recall the score from "THE GODFATHER" and "THE GODFATHER II", one only has to close your eyes and visualize the characters that came to life on the big screen, the music from Rota was a large part of this. And Disc Two with "THE NIGHTS OF CABIRIA", "AMARCORD" and "LA STRADA", can sit back and soak up each passage and counterparts that prevail.

Silva Screen Records and James Fitzpatrick (producer), please stand up and take a bow for the well deserved rare gems you've given us. This can only be one of the most sought after collections complete in every detail for any "film-score-buff" worth his salt. As you listen to this CD, you can visualize each scene the cue is recalling. And speaking for one and all movie music collectors----this is a keeper!

5 out of 5 stars I am so in tune with this album.......2006-07-12

Whenever I listen to this cd I am healed of anger, sadness, depression, aches of any sort. The power displayed on this cd is incredible and always refreshes my senses when I listen to it. There is no Black Metal album quite like it. I can imagine myself in a dark, misty forest at night feeling the beautiful Norwegian winds upon my flesh as the night blackens and the strength of darkness burns deep in my lonely yet contempt heart, searching no battles, only grasping the night's beauty to fulfil my dark desires of renewing the Earth's once had natural life, at least in my desperate mind which eternally hungers for that natural dark beauty once existant ages ago.
That is what this album does for me.

5 out of 5 stars A Black metal Classic.......2006-03-21

_The Shadowthrone_ and _Dark Medival Times_ are true Black metal classics. This, and _Hvis Lyset Tar Oss_ by Burzum, were my introduction to black metal, and I can't say that I could have found a better place to start. The whole album is as cold as ice, from the Battle cry that opens the album to the funeral sythn ending. If you've just discovered satyricon, you could pick this up but I'd recommend getting _Nemesis Divinia_ before picking this up. I say that because _Nemesis Divinia_ is the bands most famous record. And It is an easier introduction to this band overall.

But if your already fammiliar to satyricon and/or black metal Pick this up now! And for those of who like bands like Cradle of Filth or Dimmu Borgir, go out and listen to some of the bands that made the bands you like what they are today.

If you Like Satyricon check out these other bands:
Burzum
Mayhem
Darkthrone
Windir
1349
Emperor
Enslaved
Immortal

5 out of 5 stars Another brilliant release from Satyr and Frost.......2006-03-19

This is sometimes considered the quintessential Satyricon release (myself, I prefer Dark Medieval Times, but this album is a CLOSE second,) and it certainly is marvellous. And unlike Emperor, Satyricon were able to create a sevond full-length album that was more epic than the first, without being pompous and melo-dramatic. Where DMT was more folk/medieval, this album is conspicuously more Viking metall-ish. There is even a Viking metal song to be found on this disc (the aptly-titled "Vikingland") The musicianship is tighter on this release, and the song-writing is slightly less minimalistic (which some consider to be an improvement.) Satyr's vocals are also amazing, being very fierce and raspy, yet not overly so. Frost gives another astounding performance. There seems to be just slightly less of an emphasis on the use of the acoustic guitar on this album, as compared to DMT, and to regain the balance, there is a slightly higher use of keyboards, for ambience and atmosphere. Satyr even experiments a bit with some clean vocalled passages! And he conquers these quite well, too. Lyrically, this album follows the pattern of DMT, in that about half of the songs are written in English, and half in their native Norwegian (not sure if this is modern Norwegian or archaic Norwegian, though.)

Of particular note is perhaps Satyr's finest composition to date, the album closer "I En Svarte Kiste," which translates to something along the lines of "In the Black Casket." This track is an all-keyboard instrumental funeral dirge, and it is amazing. It begins with ambient synth lines, and then progresses to a keyboarded horn passage, and ends with several minutes of an organ passage. This track makes it imminently clear where Satyr would be heading with his side-project "Wongraven." Worth the cost of the album alone.

In short, this album, along with DMT, has helped greatly to define early-90's Norwegian black metal. Unfortunately, these releases have since been (unjustly) overshadowed by bands like Mayhem, Emperor, and Darkthrone, which are great bands in their own right, but I can't help but think their reputations have done more for them than their actual musical recordings. Either way, this album is essential for all bm fans, and even those non-BM fans looking for something a little different.

5 out of 5 stars Fellini + Rota = Magic.......2006-10-31

Orchestrated and conducted by Derek Wadsworth and performed by The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, the scores on the CD "Fellini Rota: Music from the Classic Films of Federico Fellini" are marvelous and unforgettable and I am never tired of listening to them. The CD is one of the favorites in my collection.

Rota's melodies have everything in them: Italy's shining sun, her blue sky, the sound of her sea. They've got ancient wisdom of Rome and eternal innocence of a child. They are in Cabiria's smile, Gradisca's walk, Anita's fountain, Juliet's quiet loneliness, it the songs of Gelsomina's trumpet, in La Saraghina's lurid dance on the beach. Rota filled his tunes with beauty, poetry, romance, longing, regrets and dreams that may never come true but they are beautiful dreams anyway. Sweet and melodical, gentle and rhythmical, kind and lovely, they keep playing after the films are over, all characters disappear from the screen and what is left behind is "a little orchestra of Hope with Love as its conductor". The last that we hear in is the magic music of Rota, bringing affirmation, hope and love.

5 out of 5 stars The Album That Could Murder The Sun........2007-01-14

Dark, cold and murderous. Those are the words that come to mind when you first experience this masterpiece of Black Metal. I can't think of one track on this CD that doesn't deserve 5 stars. The title track is about as evil and haunting as you can get. Lots of reviewers talk about 'atmosphere' and 'cold' sounding albums; this one ranks right up there with the best. There's Burzum, Immortal, Gorgoroth, Darkthrone and then there's this gem by Satyricon. If you are building a Black Metal collection or you're wondering what the whole 'Norwegian' Black Metal movement is all about, then buy this right away. You will not regret it and it won't be leaving your CD player anytime soon.
Big Hail to Satyr for creating this one.

5 out of 5 stars One of black metal's crowning achievements.......2006-09-08

In 1993, a little known band (at the time) called Satyricon released their debut, Dark Medieval Times. With Satyr on guitar, bass, and keyboards and Frost on drums, the duo, little to their knowledge, unleashed what would become one of black metal's classic albums.

Yes, we know, the production isn't perfect, but it is at the same time. It fits the mood of the music perfectly. It isn't as cheap-sounding as other black metal releases, but is a little more raw and cold, the way black metal should sound. I personally like black metal-style production. When I first heard it I liked it; as a guitarist, I thought the guitars sounded really cool/cold and I was hooked. The atmosphere here is one of the best in black metal. The addition of acoustic guitars, flutes, and a light dash of keyboards help contribute to the medieval atmosphere. The acoustic passages especially sound good, beautiful even. Just check out "Min Hyllest Til Vinterland" if you don't believe me. And of course, Frost gives a great performance on drums, although he would get even better in the years to come.

One thing I find fascinating about this cd is that no lyrics were in the booklet, and they aren't found online anyway, leaving them a total mystery. That's an awesome little nuance to this cd, although I can understand a good bit of what he says (anyone can, you just have to listen carefully). Anyway, my favorite tracks are "Walk the Path of Sorrow", "Min Hyllest Til Vinterland," and "In to the Mighty Forest," although every track is solid, and no skipping is necessary. For a great effect, listen to this cd on a dark, cloudy winter day, that really brings out the atmosphere well. If you want more like this, Check out Satyricons next two full lengths, The Shadowthrone and Nemesis Divina, Behemoth's Sventevith (Storming Near the Baltic), and Ulver's Nattens Madrigal. Enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars I hate most black metal..........2006-05-13

But this stuff is insanely talented, and doesn't fall into the pitfalls that most black metal bands do. Yes, the double bass never lets up. Yes, the vocals are more screamed than actually sung. Yes, the guitars are heavily distorted. But along with all of the above, they manage to incorporate midevial influences, and work wonders with the black metal sound. I would give this 3 stars alone for effort. Than I give the next one for accomplishing what they set out to do, giving us an extreme, yet genuinely experimental, artifact of metal.

5 out of 5 stars 7 stars.......2006-03-27

This is a disturbing, intensely pure work.
Belongs on any serious music lover's open-minded shelf.

5 out of 5 stars An Astounding Effort From One of Norway's Finest.......2006-03-19

Simply put, this album is perfect. Now, "perfect" is not an adjective I use with an frequency, especially when it comes to music. I am very picky, and can usually find a flaw somewhere, even in my favorite albums. But not this one. I can honestly say, every note, every syllable, every second of every track on this album is done to perfection. In my opinion, Satyricon never topped this release. It is epic, majestic, and beautiful, while at the same time as brutally visceral as you could want. Satyr gave his best vocal performance here, and it is very chilling indeed. The riffs and melodies are very cold and wintry, as well as dark and, well, medieval! Frost gives an excellent drum performance, and shows us the brilliant drummer we all know he is. This album is so ridiculously full of atmosphere, it makes even Darkthrone seem sterile. There is a generous use of acoustic guitars on this release, and I think they are even more artistic and well-used than even the acoustic parts on "Blood Fire Death." There is a light sprinkling of keyboards on this release, generally in the form of ambient soundscapes or wind-sounding effects, but they by no means overpower any of the other instruments (think "In the Nightside Eclipse" instead of "Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk.")And flutes! There are flutes used on two tracks on this album, and they fit perfectly. Especially on the title track, perhaps my favorite song of all time. It begins with about 2:30 of harsh black metal, then goes into an acoustic passage, and then more black metal, and then another acoustic passage, where the flute shows up for the first time, and presents us with a very folk-ish medieval solo. Then more black metal, and another flute/acoustic passage, then a last black metal passage. Finally, to close the song there is a return of the flute, playing a very simple, yet effective, medieval melody. Astounding! Certainly this album should be in the collections of all who call themselves fans of black metal or folk metal, as it is a brilliant album. Also check out their second release, "The Shadowthrone" which is also perfect, though i slightly prefer this one.

5 out of 5 stars Satyricon is up to new tricks.......2007-05-25

Satyricon is awesome. this is the first time that I have heard them when they returned to Century Media. they, along with many other black and death metal bands, prove that you don't have to have blast beats to kick butt. maybe I should go to their back catalog and get their other albums. they totally rock!

5 out of 5 stars Super Satyricon!.......2007-01-08

Great heavy punishing album, Very aggressive and dark. Good cd to listen to before you get into kickboxing match. Has K.I.N.G. Video on the disc and lyrics inside w/credits.

4 out of 5 stars Dark menacing and machine-like.......2006-12-17

On Now Diabolical Satyricon continue the trend they begun on Rebel Extravaganza and continued on Volcano. They've simplified their sound even more, stripping away any extraneous components or flourishes, in the process revealing a dark and machine-like structure that if anything makes them more menacing. Now, Diabolical is a focused and relentless grooving wall of clock-work precision that is as intense as it is catchy. Never thought I'd use the word catchy in reference to an extreme metal band but damned if it isn't. It's not that the the songs are simple, key changes, rhythm changes and dynamics abound. But Satyricon use repetition to emphasize those changes and to build tension. There's a certain amount of restraint in this cd. Frost for example rarely plays blast beats but lays down an almost tribal by way of AC/DC thing. Satyr's guitars are simplified and locked perfectly with the percussion which makes for a monstrous unity of sound. Riding over the top are Satyr's chilling vocals. Which I think are the best he's ever done. I suppose one could make the argument that Satyricon are black metal in lyrical content only these days. I prefer to think they are redefining the genre. They've certainly come a long way from their early masterpiece Dark Medieval Times and that's ok as they continue to forge a new, interesting and dark as f*ck direction for themselves.

5 out of 5 stars An Instant Classic.......2006-10-08

Wow, having been out of the black and even metal loop for the last 12 years, I just happened upon the video for K.I.N.G. while surfing channels and found this on MTV2???!!!!

Alot has changed in 12 years.

Anywho, this album is great. Dark, satanic lyrics, many of which have an obvious H.P. Lovecraft influence (references to Beyond the Wall of Sleep and Call of Cthuhlu abound) come blaring out embedded in really raw metal music which recalls the good 'ol days of Bathory, Venom and the likes.

The firts three tracks absolutely kill. The ninth is another great one with blast beats which sound super brutal when contrasted with the slightly more restrained pace on the rest of the album. Every track has something to offer. This has pushed me to rediscover my roots and passion which for many years had me captivated.

Excellent metal album!

4 out of 5 stars Different isn't always bad.......2006-09-01

Since its inception, black metal has been pretty limited. There's old-school black metal like Venom, brutal bands like Dark Funeral, and there's atmospheric/melodic black metal like Dimmu Borgir and Old Man's Child. But that's pretty much it in black metal's variety department. Until now, that is.

When they released their first album in 1993, Satyricon were more-or-less a brutal black metal band (mostly thanks to drummer Frost's blast beat barrages). Boy, have they come a long way since then.

The band's sixth full length release, "Now, Diabolical," is about the closest you'll get to a "Black Album" in this genre. (It even begins with a riff which is almost identical to Metallica's "Enter Sandman"!) Granted, it's a move towards the mainstream (it's even tied with Dimmu Borgir's "Death Cult Armageddon" for the highest selling black metal album ever released) because it's far less brutal than Satyricon's older material. But it's also more unique, creative, and has more individually memorable tracks.

The songs are much more stripped-down and the tempos are greatly restrained. Frost is still the man behind the drums, but he's no longer pounding them with insane speed. He still thumps the skins profusely, but the record's production (and occasionally, as in "To The Mountains," melodic guitar parts) hold them down and prevent them from becoming dominate. Add a bunch of groovey guitar leads and a sporadically audible bass note and you have Satyricon's new sound. The only old-school characteristics that remain here are Satyr's high, snarly/raspy yet still intelligible vocals, and his none-too-subtle (or nice) lyrics (i.e. "We want your head on a plate").

Some of the songs become kind of repetitive and are overly long, but suffice to say, every track here is a keeper. "K.I.N.G." is one particularly catchy number with slowly thumping drums and a guitar lead you just might be tempted to hum along to. "A New Enemy," possibly the record's best cut, begins with a very fast rhythm, but it stops on a dime when a slow tempo change kicks in and tribal drums and other background noise are adopted. Similarly, "The Rite Of War Cross" opens with fast, lurching guitar hooks and propulsive drumming and segues into a section with French horns and soft strings. "Delirium" has a catchy, chugging riff and equally as catchy, stop-start percussion, but the song's main highlight is its very pretty and ambient (almost piano-like) strings. The only straight brutal moment to be found on the album is the closer, "Storm (Of The Destroyer)," which is surprising in its heaviness and is backed by scorching riffs and Frost's relentless double bass hammering.

There is a slight chance that Satyricon changed their sound for this album only, and are planning on going back to their brutal roots for most of their future recordings. But the more likely choice is that the band are trying to more-or-less redefine themselves and will continue in this vein in the future. If that's the case, you should get used to that fact and realize that this sound is even an improvement over their previous ones. "Now, Diabolical" is one of the most streamlined and controversial releases since Metallica's aforementioned disc, 1991's "Black Album," and it thus seems tailor made for diehard fans to yell "sell-out" at. However, those who leave the nitpicking to the black metal purists will find this record is equally as powerful, memorable, and offensive as the band's early stuff, but it also simultaneously manages to be far more innovative.

5 out of 5 stars Great Piece of Music.......2007-07-16

I guess there is some controversy over whether to call these guys black metal and truthfully, I could care less. It is just metal to me. The vocals are the growly kind which I like, the music is varied and heavy, for the most part, and it just has all the ingredients that keep me interested.

My only criticism is that Satyr tends to overdo a riff here and there. It's as if he doesn't know when to quit and move on. However, this is an extremely minor quirk that does not take away from the five stars.

Good stuff. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Black metal for people who can't stand infinite blast beats.......2007-02-22

Ok, so I can't stand it when bands do blast beats and little else, like Emperor or Gorgoroth. Satyricon has made an incredibly good album with Volcano. Satyricon seems to be where the innovation in black metal is today. They do use blast beats sometimes but not overly much.

4 out of 5 stars Satyricon's Finest Hour.......2006-07-25

And yet another band pulls itself out of the typical black metal cycle (in which, basically, everyone does the exact same thing they did in 1994) only to be called sell-outs. Sounds familiar, doesn't it? Hmm... if this is selling out, then I hope everyone starts doing it.

This is Satyr & Frost's most minimalist effort, and for the most part has a 'black'n'roll' feel to it, not unlike Darkthrone's "Total Death" album from 10 years ago... yet definitely not a copy.

The production is surprisingly clean (possibly due to major label budget - Satyricon went corporate with this release) which helps the album along significantly, lending clarity to the sound and a cold edge to Satyr's nasty little growls.

Some very fitting and well-performed female vocals poke their way in on a few occasions (most notably on "Angstridden" and "Black Lava") and really do set the tone for the movements in which they're used.

Song picks here would be the two mentioned above, as well as "Mental Mercury" for having an ending that simply blew my head off - one of the best uses of repetition I've heard in the genre, ever.

This is definitely the highlight of Satyricon's catalogue, and a must-have for any fans of straight-forward 'blackened' metal without the bells and whistles that many other bands have made use of.

5 out of 5 stars GOOD.......2006-06-17

first off to the idiots that think they are to cool to listen to this just cuz its missing a few elements of "true" black metal you are ignorant cuz Satyricon has always been in the 2nd wave of Black metal with bands such as Marduk, Mayhem, Darkthrone, Emperor, Immortal, Carpathian Forest, and many of the others. just cuz they wanted expand their musical horizons isnt a bad thing. i mean why would you want a cd that sounds exactly like the last...

2 out of 5 stars "BM" for people who have never really listened to BM.......2006-03-19

As I was scrolling through the reviews for this album, I could not help but shake my head in disbelief. I could not believe how many times I heard this disc referred to as a black metal album! This is no more a black metal album than Slipknot's "Iowa" was a brutal death metal album. This album is a pretty pure incarnation of a metal-tinged hard rock album. Some have called it "black-n-roll" which is a much more fitting label than calling it a pure black metal release. Granted, it does have some pseudo-black metal vocal stylings, and given the history of the band, it is almost forgiveable to label this a black metal album.

That is, until you hear the album.

Then it should be quite obvious that this album and black metal have nearly nothing in common. I'm willing to bet that most (if not all) of the reviewers of this album who have labelled it as bm do so because they have never heard an actual bm album, but have only ever heard Satyricon referred to as a black metal group. Well folks, they were. But not anymore.

Now, my rating is for the disc as a black metal album (since it isn't one) with one star each for Satyr and Frost, because I respect their actual bm work far too much to give their creation a single star rating. But taken for what it really is, this album for me would rate closer to a 4.5 stars. It really isn't a bad album, but it is by no means a black metal album.

Now, for those interested in hearing what Satyricon sound like as a real black metal band, might I suggest the albums "Dark Medieval Times" and "The Shadowthrone." I personally prefer the former, and it is easily one of my top three favorite albums ever. And now that Moonfog has re-released these discs through The End Records, they are not difficult to find fo under $15. If you wish to hear what real black metal sounds like, definitely make it a point to find one (or both, ideally) of the albums I've mentioned. Give them a listen, and then play "Volcano" again, and you'll see the monstrous difference. Satyricon is an amazing band, just not necessarily on this release.

By the way, I am not thirteen, I just didn't want to bother registering just to write this review.

2 out of 5 stars is this the best?.......2006-02-01

I've really enjoyed the other Nuclear Blast compilation series but this was a letdown. Perhaps one shouldn't expect the best songs in compilations but if you want to highlight your bands and get people interested in buying the band's CDs, then this compilation is not going to help encourage this. Overall I felt it was weak.

    3 out of 5 stars i like some.......2000-07-31

the only songs i like are emperor, dimmu borgir, cradle of filth, agathodaimon, covenant, dissection, dismal euphony, naglfar, and gehenna is ok. i think satyricon, immortal, mayhem, and the abyss is just mindless noise. and i think bal sagoth and enslaved are laughable thay are so silly. especially bal sagoth, what with the fake trumpets and all.

Excellent!!! It has it all, from Cradle of Filth to Disection and Bal Sagoth, I, and all of my friends, absolutely enjoy the dark droning tones of this compilation CD.

The first of producer Hal Willner's splendid anthology series. Each outing allows an eclectic array of modern, vaguely avant-garde musicians to explore the work of a single composer. Here Bill Frisell, Sharon Freeman, Deborah Harry, Wynton Marsalis, and Carla Bley, among others, take on the haunting circus atmosphere of Nino Rota's scores for the films of Federico Fellini. The emphasis is on the jazzy, with Frisell's shimmering, ethereal take on Juliet of the Spirits, Jaki Bayard's solo piano version of Amarcord, and Freeman's lively suite from La Dolce Vita among the highlights. Although beginners might prefer Rota in the original soundtrack recordings, this is a welcome addition for the adventurous or those already on board. --Heidi MacDonald

5 out of 5 stars Essential Listening, but hard to find.......2002-02-19

This is the best of Wilner's compliations. These jazz artists -- the best in the buinsess at the time (unfortunatley Bayard is no longer with us)-- obviously love the music, and the affection and respect are apparent in every track. It's a mixed bag illuminating the different faces of Rota from the jaunty circus themes to the lonliness of lost love. This is truly one of my favorite jazz records and it's also a great anthology of lesser-known great artists.

5 out of 5 stars Jazzy covers of the Nino Rota classics - a must have!.......1999-07-16

The album is comprised completely of cover versions of the Nino Rota Classics (and those are anything but kitschy). I love the originals but I must say that I almost love these, for the most part, jazzy covers even more! The covers are much more moody, often slower and more melodic. This is an album to have!

4 out of 5 stars Modern take on kitschy originals.......1998-05-27

For those of you thinking you'll get the origional scores from the Fellini movies, this isn't it. This is, however, an elegant modern take on Rota's compositions by talented contemporary jazz artists such as Bill Frisell, Jackie Byard and Dave Samuels. Brings the Italian Riviera to life, but not the Italian Riviera of Fellini's 1950's and 60's. Still, this is a nice addition to any jazz collection.
