Released shortly after his death in 1993, The Yellow Shark represents one of the only accurate performances of Frank Zappa's "serious" orchestral music--at least as far as the composer was concerned. Assembled from a series of sold-out performances in Germany by the Ensemble Moderne, the set includes re-workings of old favorites like "The Dog Breath Variations" and "Uncle Meat," live arrangements of some of his hairiest computer music like "The Girl in the Magnesium Dress" and "G-Spot Tornado" and new works by Zappa composed specifically for the event. The performances are astonishing and the music? Pure Zappa. --Andrew Boscardin

Album Description

The 26-member Ensemble Modern performs FZ's 'most-humanly-impossible-to-play' compositions. Piano duets, string quintets & small ballets. Simply exquisite, with a 60-page booklet to explain it all. Originally released in 1993, it stayed on the classical chart for most of `94. Includes the tracks 'Outrage At Valdez,' 'None Of The Above,' & 'Welcome To The United States', plus arrangements of some of the most fiendishly difficult pieces from FZ's back catalogue & even a 'greatest hit' or two (some would pick this as the definitive version of 'Dog Breath Variations'). Sadly, this was the last album released by FZ during his lifetime. The didipak and the booklet are housed in a slipcase. Rykodisc.

4 out of 5 stars Dedicated to experts?.......2007-06-25

Frank Zappa was very proud of this great and difficult work done at the end of his (too short) life.
It requires also great concentation and a capability that probably I don't have to well understand this kind of experimental classic music.
It goes beyond the experimental rock that is typical of many of his works, leading him to the level of great contemporary experimental classic composers.
Given such a level of difficulty I don't know how much I can suggest to buy it. You just should try to hear at this music and decide if it does fit with your soul (how could I believe just a few years ago that today I would like so much 'Your funeral my trial' of Nick Cave?)

2 out of 5 stars Zappa Attempts Stockhausen.......2007-02-13

FZ goes to Germany to upstage Karlheinz and tries an avant garde stage performance which is an elegant and popular form of expression in Germany. The Germans have perfected this type of marriage between romanticism and neoclassicism. In this case it's an overly technical performance, a display. The orchestra all sound good yet Zappa has given the music to another conductor, Peter Rundel. There is no rhythm section and without a background the result is too intellectual.

5 out of 5 stars The Yello Shark, performed by the Modern Music Ensemble.......2007-01-19

This CD addresses the more serious, compositional aspect of Frank Zappa's career, and it could not be addressed in a more suitable manner. It includes some of FZ's more difficult works, such as "Bee Bop Tango", "Uncle Meat", and "G-Spot Tornado". The conductor is Peter Rundel, and as Zappa says himself, he is a fine conductor. This is highly recommended for anyone who has already developed a taste for Zappa's complex and imaginative arrangements.

5 out of 5 stars ZAP!.......2006-01-20

Trying to define this album to my good friend was hard. "Well it's Zappa's songs done with an orechestra, but's not really classical sounding . . . it's just Zappa." And my friend just simply nodded and said "Sounds awesome." and i realized that if any reviewer would've just said 'It's Zappa!' it wouldn't take much more to sway me. so - It's Zappa! And it's damn near perfect it's so good! Riveting!!!

Be warned! You may like nobody (musically or real life) or anything (musically or real life) ever again after listening to this album, but it's not that big of a deal!

5 out of 5 stars A Frank Zappa Treasure. Better than many of his CDs.......2005-07-29

`The Yellow Shark', with words and music by Frank Zappa is a collection of `chamber music' pieces recorded in 1993 in Germany, performed by a German orchestra, `Ensemble Modern', which, I believe, commissioned Herr Zappa to assemble these pieces for their concerts. In the accompanying booklet, Frank is pictured with a baton in hand, but the credits only have him conducting three pieces, those with a very significant spoken word aspect (all spoken in English). He also makes a brief appearance at the beginning of the CD where he introduces the Ensemble Modern conductor, Peter Rundel.

This recording is probably one of the very last to be done by Zappa himself, before his unexpected death due to illness. Of all the musical figures of the 1960s lost to us over the years, I miss Zappa almost as much as I miss John Lennon, and I am very happy that if we had to lose them, it was not to drugs or any other kind of self abuse.

There are fourteen musical pieces and three `spoken word' pieces on the recording. I confess that the spoken word pieces may actually be a bit dated, especially the `Welcome to the United States' track on a questionnaire for immigrants which makes a reference to terrorism which may seem entirely too glib in our current environment.

Two of the earliest tracks `Dog Breath Variations' and `Uncle Meat' are instantly recognizable from their music and titles as `quotes' from earlier albums, with very little `classical' varnish over their strongly jazzy sound. Most of the other musical pieces have more subtle quotes from earlier Zappa works, and demonstrate influences from George Gershwin, Kurt Weill, the movie music from `Spartacus', and his old mentor, Edgar Varese.

I noticed that the applause on these tracks was louder than the music and I was wondering whether the audience was appreciating the music itself or the presence of that formidable 1960's icon, Frank Zappa. I'm sure it was a little bit of both, but Zappa and audience couldn't resist quoting from one of his best albums, `The Mothers Fillmore East - June 1971'.

I think this quote was entirely appropriate, in that we owe so much musical innovation to the popular musical performers who were nutured by 1960's, producing such wonders as Zappa and the great bands such as The Rolling Stones and The Who, who are still scoring our artistic perceptions on both commercials and dramatic themes on TV.

This may not be Zappa's greatest album, but it is one of his cleanest. Like `Hot Rats', there is very little `throw away' material. And, it is one of the very few pop or classical recordings by a major musical figure where you will hear the performance of a didgeridoo (Australian aborigonal flute).

Highly recommended for Zappa fans and fans of 1960s music in general.

    5 out of 5 stars Good stuff...for sure.........2004-09-21

A Little background about myself... Primus is and has been my favorite band for a few years now, I own nearly every album that les claypool has released (sausage, holy mackeral, primus, etc.). I was wondering through my local CD shop, and came across Frank Zappa. I had heard a few songs prior to this.. Crew Slut, I'm The Slime, and a couple others and loved them...

I did a double take when i saw this album, in all it's glory, displayed on the shelf. Larry LaLonde's favorite Zappa tunes... is this for real? Next thing you know, it's spinning in my CD Player....

This album opened me up to more frank zappa material, and being a low-income college kid, i haven't had a chance to pick up anything else up by Zappa, but i do go over to the Zappa section at the CD Shop and drool occasionally... I'm planning on buying Joe's Garage (all 3) and Over-Nite Sensation as soon as funds allow.

This CD gets played nearly as much as my Primus collection, It's an awesome album.. i'm especially fond of Camarillo Brillo and Fine Girl... but the CD is a good listen all the way through. Anyone who thinks that this and Jon Fishman's Picks are a rip-off or a scandal need to lighten up. I'm sure these CDs will open up a lot of Phish and Primus fans to the very unique, and fun tunes that are Frank Zappa....

Obviously, if you already own his whole collection, then there is no point in buying these albums, but otherwise, check them out.

5 out of 5 stars Brand New Zappa Fan.......2003-04-18

Before buying this album I had never heard any Frank Zappa. My musical tastes are quite eclectic and I'm on a constant quest to add to the collection. I don't recall the first time I wanted to check out Zappa, but being a long time Primus fan, Ler's name caught my eye. For anything else this cd will prod an interest. I'm dusting off a large section of shelf space for Zappa now.

    5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Collection!.......2003-04-11

In the liner notes for this wonderful selection of Zappa music, Larry LaLonde says, "I don't know the words to describe how much Frank Zappa's music means to me." I sure wish that I could talk to Larry over a few micro-beers and find out. The way that he put these 19 pieces together makes for infectious listening. I have greatly expanded my collection of Zappa albums and will continue to add to them. So far, One Size Fits All has been the greatest suprise. I am old enough to have been listening to this wonderful album since it's release, but I never knew of it at all! This Zappa Picks is truely great and can be used as a road map to discovering some of the best Frank Zappa music ever!

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST WAY TO GET INTO ZAPPA.......2002-10-29

THANKS LER! This comp. can't be beat, sometimes it takes a fan to actually put something together that will appeal to other non-genius types. Most people who love Zappa are not even close to being on the same page as Zappa conceptually. Zappa had a grand plan that us regular folks will never understand. In and around all of the utter weirdness that was his finest art, Frank did a whole lotta a$$ kicking. ((quick history lesson)) I met Ler on the first PRIMUS tour, they were opening for a band that was less than a one hit wonder, they were a no-hit wonder who looked enough like FISHBONE to headline. Anyways this was a million years ago, when LES still had his SPEED METAL dayjob. Me n' LER yammered on and on about ZAPPA, he knew his s#!t. I told him that PRIMUS kinda sounded like a shrunk down sloppy ZAPPA and he said that he'd never been served such a wonderful compliment, even LES stopped chewing on his PIZZA for a second when I layed that one down. Back to the matter at hand... Years go buy, PRIMUS get big, LES and LER get some credibility and thus he gets to hook y'all up. RYKO have been kind enough to include the exact source for each and every tune here so you'll have some sort of idea of what album you want to buy first (also on RYKO, nice marketing boys). LERs choices seem to tie all of Franks blistering rock n' roll ditties together, sequenced to leave you face down in the dirt. Skip STRICTLY COMMERCIAL if you're looking for a good starter kit. Let LER be your new best friend.

The great advantage of using Amazon.com is one has an opportunity to listen to a sample of a CD prior to purchasing it. I did this with PRIME MERIDIAN. This opportunity caused me to purchase it.

I love the stylishness of the tracks on this CD. For me, the music has a calming effect. When I know that I am going to have a bad day at the office, I’ll listen to this CD while driving to work. When I arrive, I don’t feel so bad.

Listen to the samples that Amazon.com offers. If you find the music uplifting, buy it. You won’t regret it.

Successive generations of revisionists may argue to the contrary, but rock's best performers often draw upon a rich historical consciousness. That's the driving sensibility of this compilation of favorite Frank Zappa performances from Phish drummer Jon Fishman; the irony, of course, is that the result is a mixed sense of musical nostalgia and inspiration that veteran iconoclast Zappa himself would scarcely have subscribed to. Thus the tracks here arguably say more about Fishman's artistic ethos than they do Zappa's, with the drummer's eclectic tastes ranging from the manic prog-noodling of "Extcenrifugal Forz" and "Apostrophe" to the overt theatricality of "Magdalena," the evocative Nixonian cabaret, "Son of Orange County," and Zappa's loopy tribute to low-budget horror films, "Cheepnis"; if Zappa waxed nostalgic about anything, it was no-brow pop culture of bad '50s monster films--and maybe do-wop. Given his own band's road mania, it's not surprising to find Fishman leaning heavily on live Zappa recordings (and Just Another Band from L.A. and Roxy and Elsewhere in particular), with a trio of Sheik Yerbouti (featuring Terry Bozzio on the drum throne) constructions getting special attention. If it's not definitive Zappa, it is an intriguing way to approach his daunting, musically expansive catalog. --Jerry McCulley

Who cares that is was picked from a drummer, look at the CD for what it is: good music. If you are a hardcore Zappa fan and already HAVE these tracks then (prepare to have your cranium cracked) DON'T BUY IT! But it you DON'T have these songs, then deffinantly do buy it, because it is just good music and an overall goob buy, you wont regret it.

    4 out of 5 stars Don't read too deep.......2005-06-11

Good Lord, some of you are looking WAY too deeply into this. Frank Zappa was a guy who took his craft very seriously (which is obvious), but wasn't afraid to poke fun at people and have a good time by incorporating humor into his music. Phish was the same way. Anytime some "greatest hits" album gets released there's always a portion the fanbase who inevitably start calling out various conspiracy theories towards whatever record industry is behind the release. Sometimes, yes, it's all about the label milking some artist for all they're worth... I'm not naive enough to deny that fact. However, this compilation is completely different. It's certainly no secret the members of Phish are big-time fans of Zappa, and his influence can easily be heard to anyone willing to listen. All Jon Fishman did was pay tribute to Frank by putting together some of HIS favorite Zappa moments, perhaps in an effort to turn some Phish fans onto Zappa in the process, who might never have given him a listen otherwise. Let's face it, it's not like Joe Blow, Jane Doe, or even Suzy Greenberg is going to pick up the album and say to themselves, "You know, I've heard a lot about this Frank Zappa character, and I've been meaning to get something by him, but now I've just GOT to have this album.... because Jon Fishman says I should listen to it." This is nothing more than Fishman saying "thanks." Finally, if you're going to have your fanbase spread, it might as well be to the Phish community. I've personally spoken to many fans on tour who mention Zappa as being one of their main influences in music. You can count on them to treat Zappa's legacy with the utmost respect, and truly appreciate his genius for everything it was. So, if Fishman turned on a couple Phish fans to Zappa's music through this little project of his? Smile, because it's a good thing to have happen.

    Sharin' in the groove,
    Jay

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Compilation.......2003-07-17

Good compilation of Zappa's work, notably better than the other cd in this that the guy from primus made.

5 out of 5 stars Not intended to be a greatest hits package.......2003-03-04

I think the Zappa fans reviewing this collection are being quite harsh on Mr. Fishman. Perhaps they have never attended a Phish show to appreciate the pool of genius that Fish (the drummer rather than the band) drinks from. It is a credit to Frank Zappa for his works to be cherished by the musicians creating the driving music of today. I also think that Frank would be impressed that a guy that wears a dress had a say in choosing his favorite songs. Regardless, many of you "die-hard" Zappa fans may be as interested in picking up a live Phish rendition of "Peaches en Regalia" before you continue to blast one of your heroes biggest fans.

Whereas I agree with you on the assessment that this disc is worthless for the hard-core maniacs like us (i've been an FZ fan from age 7, and i'm in my early forties,) it does serve a useful purpose. if someone gets more curious about FZ from hearing this, it'll do more for generating interest in his music than anything the zappa family trust has done (although it appears that dweezil may finally be doing something on that front.... check zappa.com for the new "halloween" release info.)

    >If they'd like the world to know what Zappa songs they like, they should
    >have their picks printed in a magazine or on their website, instead of
    >suckering us all into buying music that most Zappa fans already own.

i don't think they're trying to sucker people like us -- we already know this stuff is not new. they're trying to generate new interest in a massive and diverse body of work that most people won't explore because they don't know where to start.

i didn't know edgard varese from edgar buchanan before frank introduced me to his music. would someone who's hardcore into 20th century orchestral music care what a rock 'n' roll guitar player thinks about varese? probably not, but i cared enough to seek out as much varese as i could find, and i adore his music now (and i'm STILL WAITING for "the rage and the fury" -- hello zappa family!!!!! please please please release this as it's the best sounding performances of varese's material that's ever been done!)

frank's love for varese served the same purpose then as fishman's and lalonde's do now for the vast and varied catalogue of one of america's greatest and most under-appreciated composers.

so cut the boys some slack. ;^)

    5 out of 5 stars I love this CD.......2001-08-25

This is the best CD of modern 20th century guitar works that I have heard in a long time. The Kernis simply can't be described in words, and the Reich will appeal to just about anybody. Note to Frank Zappa fans, however: THIS IS NOT THE CD YOU ARE LOOKING FOR! Yes, there is a piece written by Zappa on this CD, but it is a super short (under a minute) serial piece that he wrote when he was 18, and according to the liner notes, he doesn't hold it in high regard. Unless you a completist, this Zappa will dissapoint. But if you like modern classical guitar, this CD is A++ must buy.
