The promotional sticker slapped on the jewel case for the Mirabal CD advertises it as an "Alter-Native album." This pun cleverly summarizes the artistic strategy of a Native American who holds onto his tribal roots even as he embraces modern rock. Robert Mirabal (who uses only his last name on stage) still lives in the Taos Pueblo in New Mexico, where he grew up listening to traditional American Indian music around the house and rock & roll on the radio. He got his start in music playing flute instrumentals in new age arrangements in the style of R. Carlos Nakai and Bill Miller, but on Mirabal he fuses the two musics of his youth. Helping him do it is producer Michael Wanchic (John Mellencamp's former guitarist), Kenny Aronoff (Mellencamp's ex-drummer), and Mark Andes (former bassist for Spirit). They take the Tiwa rhythms of Mirabal's ethnic background and pump them up with emphatic backbeats and bluesy guitar riffs. Over these rumbling beats, Mirabal adds his fluttering, breathy flute solos and his vocals, both spoken recitations and sung melodies.

The results inevitably recall John Trudell, another American Indian who fused tribal themes and rock & roll with striking effect, but Mirabal is less political and more personal than his predecessor. When Mirabal sings in the voice of a "Medicine Man," for example, he laments that he can "razzle dazzle ghosts," but "can't manage your love for me." On "Sundance Love," he turns a nature hymn into an erotic ballad. The album's centerpiece is a marvelously detailed 10-minute narrative about "Tony & Allison," a pair of young Navajos who go on a crime spree across the Southwest; it ends with Allison wondering how she drifted so far from the tribal virtues of her childhood and how she can get back there. --Geoffrey Himes

For his first solo album, 71-year-old trumpeter Mirabal has created a tribute to the seminal bandleader Arsenio Rodriguez. The latter was a tres-wielding maverick who reveled in Cuba's African heritage and gave new opportunities to the piano and brass. With three trumpeters on board, it is not surprising that the tracks often explode into blaring, festive, sloppy--precise fanfares, but Papi Oviedo on tres and pianist Roberto Fonseca more than hold their own. The singers also get a workout, notably on Me Bote De Guano, with its humming opening chorus and robust tenor lead vocal. The late Rubén González, who was Rodriguez's original keyboard man, is heard on Dombe Dombe, a tune he suggested for the set list. The sessions were recorded in Havana at legendary Egrem Studios with a minimum of technical bells-and-whistles and if the sonic texture is somewhat rough and remote, it only adds to the studio-live atmosphere. --Christina Roden

Album Description

Cuban trumpeter Manuel "Guajiro" Mirabel was among the first musicians recruited by British producer Nick Gold for the now legendary sessions at Havana's Egrem Studio that yielded the multi-platinum Buena Vista Social Club album and Wim Wenders' groundbreaking concert documentary. But the veteran player already had enjoyed a rich musical history, having performed for more than 40 years in some of the most celebrated Cuban nightclub orchestras. With this lively set of '40s-era conjunto classics, he pays tribute to pioneering Cuban composer-bandleader Arsenio Rodriguez, whose trumpet arrangements inspired Mirabel as a boy.

5 out of 5 stars Manuel Guarjiro Mirabal.......2006-03-05

I'm a true collector of orginal Cuban music from the 1930 to 1970's and this CD is probably one of the best I've heard from new age bands.

5 out of 5 stars Hot Latin Big Band.......2005-02-26

This album burns from start to finish. It is a straight up party album--- if you're looking for romantic make-out music, try another Buena Vista member. This record is loud and hot and made for dancing. Imagine a sweaty ballroom in a Havana casino in the 40's and this is the band that would be playing there. All of the musicians are excellent. The band has the traditional three trumpet, dual percussion, tres, bass and sonero line-up and there is not a weak member of the group. The vocalists are uniformly outstanding. Most of the album was recorded live in one take, and it definitely has the spontaneous, joyous feel of a live recording. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars "debut solo for Manuel Guajiro Mirabal".......2005-02-02

Nonesuch Records and Warner Music present "Buena Vista Social Club Presents - Manuel Guaijro Mirabal", in his solo debut album featuring the music of Arsenia Rodgriguez performed by Manuel "Guaijro" Mirabal and a very selective group of Buena Vista Social Club musicians...recorded at Havana's Egrem Studios with that electricity of "Live Performances"...this is an album you would stay up late at night for, sipping a glass or two of your favorite...entire album is performed in a playful setting.

Composer Rodgriguez sends our way "CANTA MONTERO", "EL RELOJ DE PASTORA", "EL RINCON CALIENTE", "ME BOTE DE GUANO", "MI CORAZON NO TIENE QUIEN LO LLORE", "PARA BAILAR EL MONTUNO", "TENGO QUE OLVIDARTE", creativity and innovation sends a modern salsa conjunto that will keep your head spinning...craving more of the same much like "Mambo Kings"..."DEUDA", composed by Luis Marquetti in 1945..."CHICHARRONERO", composer Louis "Lili" Martinez Grinan blends piano solo and brass to this rhythmic tune..."NO VUELVO A MORON LAS TRES MARIAS APJURRUNENME MUJERE MEDLEY", composers Otilio Del Portal and Arsenia Rodriguez favor us with a 5 minute medley of Cuba's finest offerings..."DOMBE DOMBE", beautiful opening trumpet solo, with haunting counter-melodies arranged and performed by Ruben Gonzalez, just the way it was back in the '40s...gotta love it!

5 out of 5 stars Another Gem From A Buena Vista Social Club Veteran.......2005-01-22

I owned all the albums of Buena Vista Social Club veterans and this one I waited with great anticipation. And I'm proud to say that I am not disappointed. All the selections in this album are superb and Guajiro Mirabal's playing of the trumpet is simply superb, most specially, if you are aware that he is more than 70 years old. Trumpet sound can be very annoying because of its inherent loudness but in the hands(or mouth) of Guajiro Mirabal, it is simply intoxicating. I played the album any time of the day and it never failed to amaze me. You can listen to it in any kind of mood you are. Morning. Late afternoon. Late night.

I highly recommend this album, along with all the albums of Buena Vista Social club members. Let's enjoy this music. This is the kind of music that you will not get tired listening at. Why? Because they are made by real musicians. All the sounds you hear are coming from real instruments all recorded live in the studio. If you are tired of listening to "manufactured" music, this kind of music will surely give you an entirely different experience.

Music from a Painted Cave is the live concert recording from the like-named PBS television special. Here, composer, flautist, and vocalist Robert Mirabal joins up with the soulfully skilled band he calls the Rare Tribal Mob. Together, they move into an exciting musical territory where traditional native music seamlessly fuses with tasteful acoustic rock. Mirabal and the Mob perform just over an hour of music, including both new songs and reinterpretations of older favorites such as "Medicine Man" and "Painted Caves," both of which appear on the stellar Taos Tales. Cello, guitars, bass, and percussion weave a solid, challenging, and engaging web in which Mirabal's deceptively simple songs grow particularly powerful. Innovative and magical, Music from a Painted Cave invites the listener to engage in a sonic celebration of native culture. --Paige La Grone

5 out of 5 stars fantastic.......2007-07-26

I was fortunate to see Robert perform on stage and if you ever get the chance to see him live - do it! This is one of my favorite CD's and the DVD is fabulous as well. Worth every cent..

5 out of 5 stars Serious Soul Retrival.......2007-02-19

I really hate to call some sound mixes just music, there should be another word invented here. This isn't music, it's more like sounds that can unravel those twisted-guts-feelings that daily life can throw our way. There are multitudes of sounds that can soothe-the-soul, kind of like what aloe gel does for a burn, but to actually remove those splinters that causes festering can take a more serious measure. Robert Mirabel opened himself up to hear messages from the ancestors, and reproduced those subtle sounds into a self healing media of sound vibrations. A transporter of energies is in this mix, that removes the unusable- and misguiding, and replaces these with useful energies that centers us on obtainable paths.

5 out of 5 stars From the Depths of the Soul.......2007-01-16

I would love to give this beautiful work of Mirabal's 10 stars. Every piece on this CD is absolutely beautiful. My favorites are "Medicine Man" and "1000 Miles."

I also love the way Mirabal mixes different genres of music together. (This is not your traditional tribal music.) I believe those who are open to Mirabal's interpretation and expression of what's in his soul will not be disappointed.

The music is something that takes you by suprise. Compelling... He has a way of making the music come alive. A storyteller in lyrical content. Love His Music! It not just Native sounds but is also serious drumming, rock & techno based as well. This one is also in DVD form. To see it & hear the music is just Awesome! He really tries to teach & open the eyes of the unknowing.

With Taos Tales, Robert Mirabal aurally gives form, function, and sacred breath to the commanding vision and essence of the magnificent Taos Valley. Flute, strings, and keyboard reflect the wide blue sky stretching over the high road into the town below. Percussion and samples capture the essence of the wind's spirit as it sculpts and buffets the rain-splashed earth. An atmospheric odyssey of history and myth, Taos Tales is splendid, humble, and vital. --Paige La Grone

5 out of 5 stars Taos Tales.......2006-03-15

Robert Mirabal is an exceptional artist. The stories he tells in his music and songs are wonderfully portrayed. The tunes that he creates is very relaxing and sothing.

3 out of 5 stars dissapointing cd.......2002-05-02

My first contact with Mirabal's performance is not good. The first track on this CD is very good, but then comest the bad rest. Second track is actually promising but spoiled by the vocal. Some other tracks resemble tre native Indians' tribal chanting. Uneven CD, don't know if it was supposed to be new age or world music or whatever.

5 out of 5 stars Mirabal shows his soul on this album.......2001-12-04

Mirabal seems to get more in touch with his roots on this album. The album gives the feeling of visiting Taos Pueblo and hearing some of the old stories from his people. He sings parts in Tiwa, his native tongue, and combined with the music he honors his tribe and his heritage. For me, this is Mirabal showing what is deep inside his heart.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and haunting.......2001-04-09

This CD was my very first exposure to Robert Mirabal about a year ago. It was recommended to me by a store clerk in Albuquerque New Mexico and it has since become my favorite piece of music. I also have all of Robert's other CD's, each one is beautiful in its own way. Taos Tales are the stories Robert grew up listening to at his home on the pueblo in Taos, New Mexico, where he still lives today. The music is haunting and beautiful and "Popay Runner" in particular touches me inside in ways I cannot fully express or even understand. Although only one song, "Skinwalker's Moon" is in english, my heart still understands the rest of the songs, even though my brain doesn't know the words..... does that make any sense? If you give this CD a chance, you will understand what I mean. Robert has the extraordinary ability to reach out and touch your soul and move you in unexplainable ways.... IF you let him. Open your heart when you put this CD on, and Robert will open your soul.

1 out of 5 stars Pretentious Garbage.......2001-03-12

I'm going to ignore for the moment the fact that Mirabel looks like a Native-American Fabio on his album, and instead focus on the content. This disc makes me feel like I'm being sold a sanitized tour of this particular culture. It seems completely grounded in jazz/new age, and the only thing that makes it tribal is the occasional and brief nods toward tribal chant. There is a nice flute that gets used throughout, but this seems like such overuse as to be gimmicky. It seems that aside from the flute, the whole Native American angle is just a selling point. The entire disc is completely grounded in Western music, and strikes me as the type of music I hear non-Native Americans produce when they want to immerse themselves in a different culture. The image that one gets from reading the liner notes and listening to the album is that we are basically visitors in a land where the old gods are still alive and the place is populated by noble savages. Of course, all the people look appropriately tribal despite the current date, and all the women seem to have discovered depilatories. And in the center of all this, like some god of romance, stands Mirabal. The entire thing seems to have the authenticity of a Las Vegas production. However, giving the disc its proper dues, without the packaging this is nice fusion jazz with some annoying tribal chants thrown in every so often. So if you like the pan flute jazz they play at the Cannery in San Francisco, give this a listen. Just don't expect to find music that has sprung out of both the European and Native traditions. But if you're the type that goes to Hawaii and expects ALL the residents to dress in grass skirts, or you think that the group that did the music for Titanic (not Celene Dion) plays real Celtic music, then this is the album you've been waiting for.

    5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Perfomance of a Masterpiece.......1998-11-14

It is wonderful that the world is discovering zarzuela, the best kept secret in music. And there is no better way to be introduced to zarzuela than with this beautiful recording of Dona Francisquita, perhaps the greatest work of the genre. On this album, there is a general excellence in the performance of soloists, chorus and orchestra. Placido Domingo is in excellent voice, combining passion and tenderness. Ainhoa Arteta is charming as Francisquita. Her voice is fresh, with excellent diction. Only on the technical side is Maria Bayo slightly better. Linda Mirabal is magnificent as Aurora. Her use of chest voice is exciting, she could be a great Carmen. The rest of the cast is good, the chorus is excellent, and the orchesta and conductor gives excitement to the wonderful score. Viva la Zarzuela!

Unique combination of Native American Chants and drumming along with ambiant sounds fused into a "suite" with hints of the classical genre. Is something you just need to relax and listen to in order to hear the subtleties and richness. Am looking forward to more from these two artists.

Robert Mirabal's solo music tends toward new age, and Bill Miller's toward contemporary folk and rock, but here, both put aside the embellishments to create truly Native American medleys of drums, pow wow chanting, and dark flute duos - with little hint of modern instrumentation. The first half of "Embrace and Betrayal," which has a wonderful voodoo feel about it, is the highlight for me. Contemporary Native American music at its best; I have nothing else quite like it in my collection.

I believe in one of your songs "Praises" I like it because of the drum beat. I would love to hear more songs that sound like your at a pow wow.

Robert Mirabal does and excellent job in Music From A Painted Cave. The story that goes along with the music brings even more understanding to people about the native people and who they truly are and entertains throughout as well. Best Purchase I have made in my DVD collection!

You heard right - our third copy! As far as my husband and I are concerned, no Native American artist can compare to Robert Mirabal. No other artist moves you the way he does. No one else writes lyrics and music that bring out feelings like he does. And his performances are better than anyone I've ever seen - of any genre.

This isn't your "father's" music - this is a cultural breakthrough for the Native American community - one that should have been a crossover long before country made the crossover move. If you haven't heard his music, you have no idea what you're missing, or how his music can move you - over and over!

I THINK THIS IS HIS BEST WORK RIGHT NEXT TO -TAOS TALES- THE DANCE SONG IS AWSOME AND THE MEDICINE MAN SONG IS GREAT THE LYRICS AND MUSIC IS THE WORK OF AN ARTIST BREAKING NEW GROUND IN NATIVE AMERICAN MUSIC TO THE NEXT LEVEL BUT HE STILL HAS A LONG WAY TO GO BUT HE IS ON HIS WAY...

That's what slayed me. Marabal got me with that line. Get this CD, visit the Taos Pueblo, thin out your music collection, and DANCE. This is one of those seminal pieces of music that belongs on everyone's shelf. Next, check out Taos Tales.

    5 out of 5 stars Magical.......2001-08-09

Robert has such immense talent, it cannot be captured fully on tape. I have seen him in concert 3 times now. He becomes the song, the spirit flows through him into his instruments and they become one. His every movement is fluid and he becomes the bird, the eagle, the wolf, the spirit. His music calms and excites at the same time. After a long day, all I have to do is pop in a cassette on the way home & the troubles just melt away, leaving me at peace.

4 out of 5 stars Mirabal explores his spirituality.......1998-08-24

This is a great Mirabal album if you are already a fan of his and, like me, you appreciate most things that he does. If not, I would recommend starting with an album (like Song Carrier) that has more flute playing. This one is mostly chanting and drumming, which is great, but not a showcase for Mirabal's excellent flute playing.

Full of Native history and dreamlike elements, Robert Mirabal's Warrior Magician picks up where his 1995 release Song Carrier left off, painting Native portraits with flute while expanding into a fuller, more modern sound. Mirabal artfully uses light synth, didgeridoo, and contemporary rhythms for a sound that carries Native heritage in its arms while walking into the future. As on Song Carrier there are quietly beautiful Native pieces that invite close listening, but unlike Song Carrier, Warrior Magician offers more distinctly shaped melodies and compositions. Highlights include the gently galloping "Warrior Magician," where a flute sings plaintive verses before guitar and drums chime in with tender, pounding rhythms; "Memoir Chaco" with its Native drumming and lovely mystic overtones; and "Corn Dance," where Mirabal, in a kind of "jam," meanders lovingly with wooden flute. A strong collection by an inspired artist. --Karen K. Hugg

    5 out of 5 stars Magical listening.......2003-12-02

I have yet to find a Mirabal piece I don't love. At work I can listen to instrumental music and Warrior Magician is one my co-workers and I listen to over and over. The tunes run from bold to haunting with the lilt of the flute providing a counter point.

2 out of 5 stars decent new-age; NOT Native American.......2000-07-08

Interesting compositions, but I would personally not call them Native American (perhaps Native influenced). "Carrying Native music in it's arms while walking into the future"? Give me a break! I see Native Music AS the future! It doesn't **need** new-age permutations. BUT, if you really go for contemporary Native sounds I recommend R. Carlos Nakai or Robert Tree Cody. If you prefer traditional, try either of the two above or Paul Zimmer. Or attend a pow-wow in your area, many fine "unknown" artists play pow-wows and sell privately released tapes and CDs.

1 out of 5 stars go for other Mirabal.......1999-12-13

This album sees Mirabal slipping painfully into new age. It's no good, with too much synthetic material...if you're into his flute playing go for Song Carrier or Native Suite.
