Story's remarkable 1983 debut is the intellectual sister of Winston's December--a discursive series of solo piano improvisations that draw on the rich jazz harmony of pioneers like Bill Evans, Story's acknowledged chief inspiration. Yet Colors is almost minimalist next to Evans's more densely textured works--a spacious blend of polychords, breezy runs, and finely timed sustenutos, with an accessible spirit and memorable melodies--like the uplifting figure she plays over a simple descending bassline in "Hymn," or the indelible major-key main theme of "Things with Wings." More economical than Keith Jarrett, more florid and changeable than Winston, Story finds a compelling middle ground here between jazz harmony and classical technique, outside improv and sturdy songcraft, complex performance and inner stillness. --James Rotondi

5 out of 5 stars Liz Story is Terrific!.......2005-10-14

I have loved this album for years. Somehow in my moves in recent years, I lost it, so I just HAD to replace it! What joy she gives with her music! The energy is so positive, sensitive and just downright enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars Whimsical reveries for solo piano.......2004-01-01

Redolant with imagination, fancy and emotion, the piano stylings of Liz Story are always appealing and the gentle, modern keyboard fantasies on "Solid Colors" are no exception. I normally prefer hearing the sounds of multiple instruments playing together, but Story's gentle, accoustic improvisations are so rich and varied that I find I really don't miss the backup band. Though this Narada CD tends to be classified in the nebulous, ever-widening net of "New Age" music, I'd categorize instead as light jazz, of the sort you'd expect to enjoy hearing over brunch at a fine city restaurant. It makes a great backdrop for a brunch of your own too, served warm at home for a few good friends. For more of Liz Story's stylish compositions and superb musicianship, check out her many other releases. If you enjoy her work, you may also like the work of pianist Keiko Matsui as heard on her albums "White Owl" and "Doll"--more orchestrated but equally whimsical and passionate.

5 out of 5 stars My Mentor & Inspiration.......2002-02-24

Liz Story. What can I say? As a fellow pianist/composer, Liz put the joy & inspiration back into my playing. With her debut of Solid Colors, which, in my eyes, is her best of all, she gave me back a passion I lost over the years. When I serendipitously fell upon her first music anthology book, my heart actually began to race with excitement. Finally the songs I fell in love with, I could learn. Within a month, I had the entire book memorized & an entire new confidence came over me. Her style, rhythms, chord progressions et al, influenced & enlightened my playing. I also had the priviledge to see her in concert, hug her & have her sign my music anthology "Escape of the Circus Ponies". Pure acoustical genious. Thank you Liz. (check out my single CD "The Promise" while you're at it!)

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Solo Piano!.......2001-08-07

Solid Colors is a beautiful compilation of melodies, most of which where written by Story herself. This is one of her earlier works, released in 1982, and is also my favorite Liz Story cd. This cd ranges in a variety of emotion, which makes for a wonderful blend of music. Like George Winston, Liz Story is an anchor for Windham Hill Records. Bravo to Will Ackerman on his ability to showcase great talent (He is the founder of Windham Hill and incidently, produced this cd). She has a lovely flow to her playing. I listen to this cd over and over and over......For some reason, it reminds me of the Fall season. Maybe Solid Colors is a suitable autumn name afterall. If you aren't familiar w/ her music, this would make a great cd to start with. "17 Seconds to Anywhere" is another good one. I can tell you this, this is some great music to relax with and if you enjoy solo paino, then you'll love Solid Colors...any season, day or night!

5 out of 5 stars Great relaxing CD that I can't get enough of!.......2000-06-28

I'm a student and usually listen to music to help me relax while studying. This one is my favorite! The melodies are nonintrusive and memorable. The entire CD flows like a river from beginning to end. If you like this particular Liz Story CD, check ot Jims Chapell's "DUSK", very similar and also listenable over and over.

5 out of 5 stars A Gifted Pianist.......2007-01-16

Liz Story's wonderfully lyrical piano stylings have made her one of the most popular and accomplished pianists of the last quarter century. From 1983 through 1998, Story recorded nine albums for the Windham Hill label and (except for 1994's Christmas album THE GIFT) they are all sampled here.

Story's music is both instrospective and calming. Even when performing "Mack the Knife," the song is tranformed into a lilting ballad. While most of these tracks are solo, Story is accompanied by percussion on the energetic "Toy Soldiers" and the dramatic "Deeper Reasons," as well as acoustic bass on the solemn "Ana."

Windham Hill's previous anthology (WELCOME HOME: THE BEST OF LIZ STORY) was released in 2001 following her final album for the label (1998's 17 SECONDS TO NOWHERE). While there are no new recordings to draw on for PURE LIZ STORY, only four tracks are repeated. The only post-1998 track is "Valse D'Amelie" from the 2005 various artists collection CINEMA. [Note: Story has since signed with the Digital Musicworks International label and released NIGHT SKY ESSAYS in 2005.]

If you're looking for a solid introduction to this gifted pianist, this is an excellent place to start. [Running Time - 68:26] VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars Dark, mellow and calming.......2002-12-25

"Unaccountable Effect", "Rope Trick" and "Deeper Reasons" are stand out songs on this CD for me but all the songs are good. This ranks with the best piano music you will ever hear. "Deeper Reasons" is probably my favorite piano song. Mark Isham adds sound effects to the song. The ending sounds dark, mysterious and dramatic. I bought some of the more recent CD's by Liz Story. I was disappointed, they don't sound nearly as good as this, not to me. Anyone who likes piano and/or new age music should love this.

4 out of 5 stars A solid album by an underrated composer.......2002-08-22

While several of Liz Story's albums have acquired more recognition than "Unaccountable Effect", this album is a worthy addition to one's collection of Liz's albums. Among the noteworthy compositions on this record are the calming, meditative tune "Devotion", the incessant yet captivating D minor motif that forms the basis of "Rope Trick", and the haunting (a word that is overused, but is a perfect description to...) "Deeper Reasons"--the latter, by far, being one of my favorite Liz tunes.
Having seen her in concert twice (and having met her backstage both times!), I highly recommend seeing Liz Story in concert. She leaves no fan (and newcomer to her music!) disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Soothing music to pacify the soul and free the mind........1998-08-04

I have relied on this album for years to help me relax and to center in on what is most important in life. Her music conjures images of peaceful landscapes and dancing rivers which serve as remedies for the tension of modern life.

Broadway veteran Liz Callaway (most famous for her five-year stint as Grizabella in Cats on Broadway in the late '90s) fills her second solo album with lesser-known tunes, a number of them covering moments in her career. Her lovely soprano can break your heart with the ballad "Since You Stayed Here" then thrill you with the showstopper "The Story Goes On" from Baby (which earned her a Tony nomination). The emotional heart of the album is "Meadowlark," Stephen Schwartz's wondrous tale of risk and heartbreak that proves a particularly glorious marriage with Callaway's voice. In a savvy bit of programming, that peak is followed by the deliciously langorous "Sleepy Man." Callaway's sister, jazz/cabaret singer Ann Hampton Callaway, makes a guest appearance in Stephen Sondheim's powerful "Our Time," a teaser of the sisters' live collaboration. Of Varese Sarabande's many albums spotlighting Broadway singers, The Story Goes On is one of their absolute best. --David Horiuchi

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Y'all are crazy!.......2006-11-03

The Billy Porter duet is one of the most unique and thrilling songs on the cd. What a fantastic re-invention of that song. And their voices by themselves and together are glorious. Its all personal taste and by no means is that the only good song. Its probably THE best solo cd by a broadway artist. Incredible!

5 out of 5 stars Liz Callaway Goes On..........2006-05-02

Liz Callaway has one of the most enthralling voices around. Her voice is melodious and very soothing and especially shines in soft and subdued ballads. She doesn't have a big voice but she has an amazing range and sense of melody.

She opens the album with a strong rendition of "You There in the Back Row" a song I'm not familiar with but has grown to love. The next track "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of my Hair" lacks the spunk and bite that I think the song should have, and the arrangement felt out of place in the album.

She had a touching and moving rendition of `Since You Stayed Here". I'm not familiar with the musical Brownstone but this song made me want to check out the musical. It's about someone forced to become a stronger person after a breakup or some sort, that you wouldn't recognize it's the same person. I really love this song and Liz captured the strength as well as the sadness of the song.

Another standout is her now trademark version of "Meadowlark". The story of the meadowlark was a metaphor that convinced the character to the important decision she made in leaving her husband for another man. This is a really powerful song and truly Liz Callaway soared in this song. "Sleepy Man" was another notable track. This is probably the song that fits Liz Callaway's voice most perfectly. It was very sweet and really really soothing in the ears. This is one of my favorite tracks.

"Stop Time" is a song about the inexplicable combination of joy and sadness of watching your child grow up. It was a tender rendition that ends with a beautiful subdued last note. This woman knows how to end a song.

Once I got passed the cheesiness of the arrangement of "One Boy", I enjoyed it. It's old fashioned but it's still good. Liz then made an updated rendition of "The Story Goes On" from her show "Baby" This song was about a mother-to-be finally realizing the beauty and magic of carrying a child after she felt the child's first kick. I prefer the stronger arrangement of the song in this album compared to the Baby Cast Recording, but the innocence of that earlier rendition still resonates.

She ended the album with a beautiful rendition of "A Place Called Home". I first heard this song in one of Lea Salonga's concerts and I fell in love with this song. Her last note was very touching and melodiously and heartbreakingly romantic.

Grade= A

5 out of 5 stars Liz Callaway SOARS!.......2005-06-27

Wow! I love this cd! I went to a camp in Decatur, Illinois called Showchoir Camps of America. One night, as our evening entertainment, she performed this entire album!! That afternoon Ms. Liz came for a question and answer session with Phil Reno. She is such a down to earth person and sooo very talented! At the concert, I started to cry! During one song, Ms. Liz forgot the words to a song ( actually, I forgot what the song was called!), so she just made up some words to it!! If you want a TRUELY talented performer, Liz Callaway is the one for you!

5 out of 5 stars ....Love this album too!.......2004-08-18

I love this album. There are a few songs I kinda skip, because it was just weird. That song being "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of my Hair", weird. I loved the duet "Where is Love" from the musical Oliver. "Stop,Time" from the musical BIG (grab your puffs!). I enjoyed the 50's sounding "One Boy!" from Bye,Bye Birdie. Liz has a wonderful range, and flattering childish tone to her voice, reaching notes that would take me years of training to ever reach again! She has complied all these exciting songs and ends the album with "A Place Called Home", from A Christmas Carol. I could never give her enough praise. If you like Strisand, and Sintra, you'll love her too! :-) Liz is always shinning when she sings! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Unknown Talent Sings Unknown and Known Broadway Songs.......2003-06-10

... I thought I recognized the voice but I couldn't quite place it. I finally realized that she was the singing voice of Anastacia in the animated movie. Meg Ryan was the speaking voice. Liz Callaway has one of the clearest voices I have ever heard and also a very strong voice. I love her rendition of Knowing When to Leave/Promises, Promises by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Great arrangements. Dionne Warwick, who I am also a fan of covered Promises, and the Carpenters sang a version of Knowing When to Leave. I'm also a Carpenters' fan. On this album all the songs are Broadway. Many I hadn't heard before but love now due to Liz. The first song, You There in the Backrow is a tribute to fans of shows. "Watch me sing my song for you" the words go. Liz makes you want to jump to your feet. Liz does a rendition of I' Gonna Wash that Man Right Out of My Hair from South Pacific, rock version. I can't say that's my favorite, but favorite to one of my friends. Since You Stayed Here, another unknown song to me, is quiet and hauntingly beautiful. Bette Midler does a version of this I think on her CD with From a Distance. She sings a duet with her sister, Ann Hampton Callaway who sings on Sibling Revelry with Liz. Ann wrote and sang the theme from The Nanny. The song Liz and Callaway and here sister does is Our Time. It's also on Sibling Revelry. Great duet. One of my favorites on the CD is Marry Me a Little by Stephen Sondheim. The words are a plea to marry me, a little. The song is an almost a desperate plea to marry me but you don't have to make promises you don't want to, an open marriage? Make a few demands a few that I'm able to fulfill. She sings I'm ready. We won't have to give up a thing, we'll stay who we are the words say. Someone I'm Ready. I would give this song 5 stars on its own. It makes me cry because she sounds like she will settle but at the same time she wants the love fully. The arrngements on this album are unique. She sings I've Got the Sun in the Morning from Annie Get Your Gun jazzy. Most of the other songs on the album are not known by most people. I can only say that Liz makes you want to see these shows and she pulls you in. I think I've become her biggest fan. I'm a singer too. I could see myself singing with her. I have her The Beat Goes On album too with sixties hits. I hope that people will get to know her because if you haven't heard this or her voice, you are going to be deprived of a remarkale clear strong voice. Buy this. I promise you won't be sorry! One more addition, Meadowlark. Spectacular! The story tells of someone hesitating because the time wasn't right and she learns from the story to live your life, climb every mtn.

5 out of 5 stars If All our Days Were Music.......2004-05-04

I've been listening to this album in tandem with another favorite Liz story album 'Part of Fortune.' There are eight years between these albums and to me, at least, it seems that this dedicated pianist/composer has come full circle in that time period. Sometimes the same, but often the better for her explorations.

Still the same is Liz Story's light-handed style that roams the keyboard with a steady flow of notes. Sometimes letting the melody lead, and other times letting it break through the surface of the music almost porpoise-like, with the same wry smile.

Influenced by both Mozart and jazzman Bill Evans, she has developed a style that bridges the gap between chordal and arpeggiated harmonies that seems to be as much self-expression as it is music. One leaves a Story album with a sense of having met the performer and being happier for it.

Music varies from the humor of "Captain April" to the romantic of "Beginner's Mind." "Out of Time's" introspective shifts are balanced by the jazz-like tonalities of "The Promise." The concluding piece "Remember Me This Way" is a beautiful, tiny fragment - unforgettable, and perfect in it's way.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you Liz. My children were born to this CD. :).......2004-01-22

There is something about the way that Captain April begins that is precisely right. Real April begins the same way. This cd is captivating from the very first note. As a whole, I would be hard pressed to say that I have ever listened to an entire CD that has been more compelling. That is quite a statement to make. I am so very glad that heaven has graced earth with Liz Story, and that she has graced us all with her music. Both her perceptiveness and ability are remarkable.

5 out of 5 stars ~Like water cascading over a rocky cliff~.......2002-02-09

I don't know why but beautiful music always reminds me of something and this CD reminds me of waterfalls splashing over rocks amongst misty meadows. It's got to be the piano and the way the melodies ebb and flow that just feels like the magic and serenity of rushing water. The music just seems to carry you away in a lovely enchanting dream.

5 out of 5 stars Bedtime "Story".......2000-11-27

This is a nice CD to listen to while I'm reading to my almost-3-year-old son and getting him ready for bed. He likes it so much that he will often curl up next to the CD player and drift off to sleep while it's playing! My favorite song, depending on what kind of mood I'm in :) , is either "Captain April", "17 Seconds to Anywhere" or "Out of Time". The whole CD is just beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars A great album !.......2000-11-25

I bought this a couple of years ago and it remains one of my most played albums . She has a wonderfully distinctive way of playing the piano and it has the effect of making you relax totally . Not an awfull lot more to say other than it requires a few listens to grow on you and thats always the sign of good music .

5 out of 5 stars Solo piano music of depth and artistry.......2005-11-14

Pianist Liz Story has been a mainstay in the Windham Hill label due to her emense talents and wide musical appeal. Her first releases in the 80's - like the dreamy song, "Wedding Rain" -showcased a fresh talent that bathed the listener in delicate, emotionally-rich atmospheres of lovely tonal colorations. But with such lumanescent textures is a corresponding musical intelligence that only comes from an accomplished composer and performer (she writes most her music). This classically-trained talent allows her music to rise above the more superficial "nice sounding background piano music" of this genre. Her style is reminicent at times of the French classical masters Debussy or Ravel for its emphasis on tonal beauty and cascading effects. To me her music has always exuded something special ... something very deep and resonant ... something tangibly spiritual and with a sense of celebration of life.

Story brings these same qualities to her seasonal collection, fittingly titled, "The Gift." In a world riddled with too many cheesy and trite holiday recordings, Story's "Gift" here is a true treasure and sanctuary for music lovers who appreciate good music and true talent. Its essence and "spirit" is similar to George Winston's legenday recording, "Winter" in the way it creates a sense of solace, warmth and comfort. Liz Story's performances here radiate a solid musical artisty and elegance that rise far and above the many other "quiet seasonal CD's" out there.

Probably the piece that best exudes this sensitive playing is her magical rendition of the beloved English song, "Greensleeves" (track 4) in which she creates a fleeting, transcendent mood through her seamless playing, feathery touch and delicately evocative effects. This piece is emmensely beautiful and moving to hear, transporting you to imaginative vistas and memories. Especially when doing the more well-known seasonal pieces, it takes tremendous talent to find the true, spiritual core of the music to avoid a trite-sounding result. Holiday CD's come and go, but certain ones and certain songs are timeless such as those performed here by Liz Story. The sound quality is excellent with a most-fitting resonance that brings out the rich harmonic overtones of her piano. A most lovely recording with gorgeous artistry that finds a true depth expression and a quiet, inner joy of the season.

5 out of 5 stars Perfection.......2002-03-16

I love every track on this CD, just like I love every track on all the Liz Story CDs I own. It's a permanent part of my holiday season.

5 out of 5 stars This is what Christmas is about.......1999-11-09

I never heard Liz until the disk arrived. She can both play and interpret. Put this one on, follow it with C. Chesnut's Christmas disk and the Holiday's meaning becomes clear.

Liz Story's album The Gift is just what it says. It is the most soothing Christmas present you can give to anyone. A true joy.

1 out of 5 stars My Dead Heart.......2007-06-08

I couldn't believe my eyes when I heard this CD. The title track is the worst I ever heard. There's no single right key in this playing. I felt asleep after 2 minutes.
Even in a late night bar people should kill her.
I give 0 stars

5 out of 5 stars Smooth, sensational, and soothing.......2005-07-26

I bought this album a number of years ago and was enamored of its slow & melodic pace, the crispness of the piano, and the way it seemed to curl up inside my brain. I could never help but feel relaxed while listening. Peppered with older standards and some not-so-recognizeable material, it is a wispy dream taken musical form. And the best part - my 4-month old daughter falls to sleep within 5 minutes of my putting it on, no matter how cranky she is. Highly recommended for anyone with a fussy baby.

3 out of 5 stars This cd will put you in a great mood.......2000-09-28

What an uplifting event this cd has been. It is guaranteed to put you on cloud nine. This is the kind of jazz that I truly like. It is very easy to follow. The improvision is not to far off base. Liz definetly has the talent to entertain you. She has a good touch with the piano.

The only draw back about this cd, is the fact that I didn't like all the repertoire that was performed. Some of the songs I had never heard of before. Other than that, I think this is a cd that most will enjoy.

I Would Like To Recommend This CD

5 out of 5 stars A beautifully imagined, technically proficient tour-de-force.......1998-11-23

Ms. Story's selection of material showcases her ability to plumb the emotional depths of a song and the technical facility with which she goes about her task. This collection of repertoire sets a standard against which other pop pianists must measure their arrangements and their interpretations. Never settling for the commonplace, Ms. Story continually finds imaginative, creative and musically sophisticated ways to reinterpret these generally familiar tunes. This is a collection that can be listened to repeatedly and always offers new rewards. Put a log on the fire, pour some wine, embrace someone you love and enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars A Considered meditation.......2002-05-08

By all means, buy this used if you have to. It's a treasure of Liz Story. I, too, had this when vinyl but it's long worn out. I missed till I found another one, CD, here and oh is it a joy to listen to. Her style is thoughtful, considered, and considerate. "Melancholy," a few have said & I guess that underlies it, sure, but it's not a sad thing. It's just the way we interpret such thoughtful, deeply felt moments. Meditative but moving. My favorite tracks are Part of Fortune and, the unexpected vocal treat of Liz and a church choir doing Durufle's Ubi Caritas et amore so loving, passionately that you fall back into love just hearing it. This, along with Unaccountable Effect, are my favorites of her CDs doing her own compositions from the early days. So many artists owe her a debt of gratitude for showing another way; she sings with her fingers and her "voice" is sure.

5 out of 5 stars What a tragedy this is no longer available.......2001-11-26

This is the first Liz Story album I ever bought (on vinyl) back in the mid-80's. I was enchanted with it then and I still am. I cherish it even more now knowing that it is out of print. I was only a teenager when I heard about Liz (I think one of my teachers recommended her because I had been listening to new age music), so I went out to the record store and found "Part of Fortune." Sure, there are great pop piano players but Liz Story runs rings around them--for some reason Tori Amos keeps coming to mind, but Tori only wishes she could tickle the ivories like Liz. The title track alone is worth the price. The thing about Liz is that her choice of "covers" and her original compositions are always tinged with a bit of melancholy--at least they are here. The piano actually becomes a voice and it's not always singing a happy tune. Buy it used if you have to--it's worth every penny. Thanks, Liz, for all these years of fantastic music.

5 out of 5 stars Best music to work and relax to.......2005-12-21

I have listened to this CD hundreds, possibly thousands of times and never tire of it. It is the perfect music to sit and work to. It has a hypnotic effect without being boring or repetitive. Wonderful music for any occasion!

5 out of 5 stars Liz Story's High Standards.......2003-11-21

Rich, melodic interpretations of 1920s and 30s standards, plus a few new pieces. Story plays the Steinway D piano beautifully. Her performances are warm and assured and a real treat to hear. Bartolo's bass is the perfect accompaniment.

These uncluttered arrangements are most welcomed. Soothing music to cleanse your soul.

So pour yourself a glass of Concord grape juice, turn down the lights, kick up your feet, lean back and relax, and hit the 'play' button on the CD. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars This is a nice jazz cd that you will enjoy.......2000-11-07

This is the second Liz Story cd that I have bought in this series. It is a good cd that most jazz fans will want to have in their collection. Liz has a good touch on the piano.

The main concern I have for this cd is the fact that it doesn't quite have the real good arrangements that the first cd had. The first cd that i'm talking about is the cd "My Foolish Heart". This first cd seemed to be much better than this second one. I know from experience that it is always hard to keep all your projects at the same level. You see i'm in the music buseiness and I know something about consistency.

Recommendation: I would be happy to recommend this cd.

5 out of 5 stars You really should hear this one.......2000-07-01

My sister, who loves good piano music, told me about this CD. There is none of that aimless "deedle-deedling", as she calls it, which comprises so much of contemporary piano music. The sound is torchy and slightly jazzy on the old favorites, always tranquil and understated. Two tracks, "Church of Trees", and "Ana", original compositions found on previous CD's, are simply gorgeous. The whole effect is utterly satisfying. Good music for reading, relaxing, and just living. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars wonderfully peaceful popular songs on piano.......1999-04-23

I love this CD. I would love to see Liz Story do more of the popular songs such as her selection on this CD. This is a terrific twist to relaxing piano music that is highly recognizable, yet not the usual classic slant. Love it!! More Liz, please.
