Editorial Reviews
"Why did you do it, Mr. La Ferle?"
The question my teenage sons friend posed is hard to answer. I might explain how in my formative years, music was the preeminent form of creative expression. We lived, ate and breathed music. Seemed like everyone was in a band or at least played an instrument.
And when we werent playing music we were listening to it. The radio and record players teemed with new and exciting possibilities. We listened because we wanted to hear something original and totally different and were seldom disappointed.
Over the years others in my generation gradually exchanged their guitars for mortgages and more respectable pastimes. I became an architect. Yet somehow I just couldnt let the music go. But that would be only part of the answer.
It might be because of The Song.
I cant remember when I first heard it. But it embedded itself in my brain as if I carried it since birth. Not in a bad way, like those "sticky" advertising jiggles ("my baloney has a first name "). No, just the opposite.
The alchemist of this song used only the finest ingredients. A broth of rhythm, mixed with just the right amount of melody and voicing. Like weaving gold out of thin air. Lyrics were not required. It was one of those indefinable songs, hanging comfortably between classical, contemporary and film music. In a word, timeless.
It was only when it turned up in a Woody Allen movie that I made a mental note to identify it. Definitely 20th Century and Russian. I would buy any cassette of "Russian Classics" that would turn up in the discount bin thinking that eventually it would turn up. But it was a casual quest. I didnt need a recording of the actual song. I could hear it any time I wanted by just closing my eyes. It was that memorable.
Years passed, records and cassettes gave way to CDs and MP3s. As my ear matured I could identify the telltale signs of the master composer Prokofiev. It was only time until I found the gem hidden in the treasure of his music for films; "The Troika" from Lieutenant Kije Suite.
Imagine my surprise to find that this song that has haunted me for years, that I consider to be one of the finest ever written, lasts a mere two minutes and thirty-eight seconds. Nothing else, only music, could be so insignificant and yet so powerful.
And so I attempt to weave gold. Its because of The Song.
Product Description
If you ever played the drum solo from "Wipe Out" on your school desk, then you are probably old enough to remember a time when AM radio Top 40 playlists routinely included "pop" instrumental songs.
Some have deservedly become classics, like the "Green Onions " by Booker T and the MGs", "No Matter What Shape" by the T-Bones, "Walk Dont Run" from the Ventures, "Classical Gas" by Mason Williams, and of course "Tequila" by the Champs.
obscure songs from Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass and some disco mainstays probably deserve to remain obscure.
LIQUID ARCHITECTURE is perhaps an update this genre but with a heavy influence from "Penguin Café Orchestra", "Moondog", and classic film scores. No lyrics are required.
